Team of the Season – Dele Alli

Dele Alli entered the 2015/16 campaign as a largely unknown quantity. Having joined Tottenham for an initial fee of £5 million from MK Dons in February last year, the youngster was loaned back to the-then League One side for the rest of the 2014/15 campaign before returning to his parent club last summer. After making his Premier League debut as a substitute in the season opener at Old Trafford, he soon established himself as a regular starter at White Hart Lane, and made his international debut against France in November, scoring the opening goal in a 2-0 win.

THE STATISTICS

Having notched his first Premier League goal off the bench in a 1-1 draw against Leicester in Gameweek 3, Alli was handed his first start in the 1-0 win over Sunderland in Gameweek 5. The midfielder started the season valued at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but his price fell to 4.9 after only featuring as a substitute in three of the opening four rounds of matches. Largely playing alongside Eric Dier at the base of midfield at this point, Alli’s attacking output was limited, registering a goal and three assists in his next eight appearances.

After missing the goalless draw against Chelsea in Gameweek 14 due to injury, Alli was moved into the number ten role against West Brom, with Mousa Dembele dropping into central midfield alongside Dier. The youngster promptly found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns and would then go on to produce four goals and five assists over his next ten appearances, seeing his price skyrocket to 6.1 by Gameweek 27.

Alli then bagged a further three goals and four assists in his final eight matches of the season, with his price peaking at 6.3 in Gameweek 35 before a three-match ban for violent conduct brought his campaign to a premature conclusion.

He ended the campaign with ten goals, 12 assists and 17 bonus points – a hugely impressive haul given he made just 28 Premier League starts. Alli’s temperament can be called into question on occasion, though; in addition to his three-match suspension, he also picked up seven yellow cards in the top-flight.

THE PROSPECTS

Having taken the top-flight by storm, Alli will clearly earn a significant price hike in FPL – the youngster is likely to climb into the premium price bracket next time around, with a cost of 8.5 to 9.5 looking the likeliest scenario.

Bearing in mind that Christian Eriksen ended the season with more points (178 to 166) and a slightly better points per game ratio (5.1 to 5.0), there’d be no surprise to see the pair similarly priced in FPL, thus handing us a real quandary in the centre of the park.

Delving into the data, set-piece taker Eriksen sat third amongst midfielders for both key passes (a total of 114 was more than double Alli’s 55) and total attempts, with 100 to Alli’s 74. The Dane was first in midfield for efforts on target, with 41 to Alli’s 28, though the latter boasted more close-range appeal (40 shots in the box to 29) and, subsequently, a superior goal conversion rate (13.5% to 6%).

With many Fantasy managers likely to earmark Harry Kane for their three-man frontlines, though, it remains to be seen whether a premium-priced Alli will offer the same sort of appeal next time around. As evidenced by last season, despite finishing third amongst midfielders, Eriksen never rose more than 0.2 in 2014/15, with his initial 8.5 price tag deemed too prohibitive for most Kane owners mulling over a double-up.

Certainly, having scored 21 and 25 goals over the last couple of campaigns, it’ll be a brave Fantasy manager who goes without Kane, though his 2015/16 record without Dembele (one goal in the 11 matches without the Belgian in the first XI) is clearly a concern, bearing in mind the midfielder is banned for the first four domestic fixtures of 2016/17.

Alli’s central support role and threat in and around the box may well prove decisive in how we assess our options, though team-mate Erik Lamela could also be worth keeping an eye on, depending on Mauricio Pochettino’s transfer plans over the summer. The Argentine bettered Alli for both key passes (75 to 55) and efforts inside the box (48 to 40) in less pitch time, suggesting that if he can up his output, may potentially emerge as a cheaper route into the Tottenham midfield next time around.

I'm having trouble completing my team for euro-fantasy.

Can you help me fill in the blanks?

    Patricio 1___
    Hector Kosc 2___ 3___ 4___
    Hazard Perisic Alli Alaba R.Silva
    Ronaldo Griezmann Kane

    Budget is 18m

      1. Sommer seems a popular pick, but I went Hennessey as Wales kept 7 cleanies in qualifying and have one of the 'easier' groups. Randolph for a cheaper option.
      2. Austrian defender, Dragovic a good one.
      3. Dier
      4. Shows how much having Ronaldo takes out of your team, I don't think hes worth it.

        Thanks!

        1. I was thinking Randolph (4.5) or even Mucha (4.0) to save money
        2. Good call
        3. My plan exactly 🙂
        4. Was thinking Carvajal, but is he nailed? What about Denayer? Nailed?

I have my doubts of Ronaldo too, but POR has a really good group, and he tops the bookies list of whos likely to get the golden boot in the euros...
Who would you get instead of Ronaldo? Muller?

            Hector Kosc Carvajal Dier Dragovic

It can be done though. I would want another decent keeper, that costs 5m. Then you have 1×4m + 2×4.5m defenders to find and there are starters in both price brackets.
I would probably downgrade Griezmann to Giroud if internationals hints he starts. Or Kane who has done nothing on this level before.

            Hector Kosc Carvajal Dier Dragovic
            Hazard Perisic Alli Alaba R.Silva
            Ronaldo Giroud Kane

It's bloody awful making the last decisions(which inevitably will be undone when internationals are over, but still).

Need a mid, priced at 6m (possibly 5.5) that plays in the first 3 days?
This to allow Haz (or possibly KdB) being bought and switched in.

Another way would of course be to pick Özil for the early spot.
Then I would need a mid priced 7 or 6.5 from either Belgium or Portugal?
    Probably Nainggolan.

    So basically.
    Özil + Nainggolan
    Or
    Haz/KdB + 5.5-6m mid playing 10th-12th (not French)

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

It certainly could but I don't think it will. Rooney will probably play #10 under Mourinho (behind Martial or a new striker I expect) and Mata will be sold.

Based on years as a close Mourinho watcher I'd expect:

De Gea stays, Varane in to play alongside Smalling, Schneiderlin a regular in CM, a big bid for Pogba, Depay improved out of all recognition, Schweinsteiger and Mata sold, Rashford and Lingard loaned out, a big bid for Griezmann and the signing of another top striker like Jonas or Icardi or even Kane. Something like that.

Mourinho will spend big money but he'll make United a frightening team with it and they could well win the PL next season.

Wow. That would be impressive, and many players would love to play under Mourinho so no Champions League might not be such a deterrent. I do feel as if Pogba is a bit fanciful though. He hates United.

            They will come for Mourinho.

I said a big bid for Pogba for that reason. Whether he'll come is another thing. There is talk at Chelsea that Matic may go to United if Mourinho is there and that wouldn't be bad for you either.

As for Depay you could be right but he'd need a strong defensive work ethic no? I'm not sure he has that.

He hasn't had Mourinho getting inside his head yet. He made Joe Cole and Hazard work harder and he'll do the same for Depay.

Mourinho has a reputation for not developing players but it's really not true. Where he is weak is in bringing through players aged 18-21. Where he is excellent is in the final stages of development of players aged 22-24.

I do agree with that comment and he did a good job with Zouma as well. Plenty of players in that bracket at United but I do hope he does a good job with Rashford. He's a talent.

He obviously is but Mourinho usually prefers to loan out players like that and give them a season of regular play elsewhere. I really can't see Rashford starting the season as 1st choice at United, Mourinho doesn't take risks on 18 year-olds.

Thats fair and it would be a good opportunity for him to get a loan move. Hopefully a PL club comes in for him because he needs to keep playing at this level

'Boro maybe? Mourinho has a terrific relationship with Karanka. A couple of the best United youngsters going there on loan is pretty likely I'd imagine.

Not sure. Boro are likely to buy their own striker aren't they? The certainly need one. Perhaps a team with some already established strikers that aren't quite good enough to start every week.

Not necessarily, Ryan. Not if they know they have Rashford for the season.

Don't forget that Bamford went on loan from Chelsea to 'Boro in 2014/15, scored 20 goals and was voted Championship player of the season. That's the thing with the Mourinho-Karanka relationship, there is a lot of trust there and if someone like Rashford went there Mourinho would know he'd play regularly.

Rashford would suit 'Boro down to the ground actually, they will be a solid counter-attacking team next season and Rashford's pace would be ideal.

It sounds good to me. I've always considered Mourinho to be good with building strong relationships and having that level of trust. Hopefully it works out on all levels.

interesting discussion for me -i find mour amusing and intersting ,as a citeh fan it would concern me that he takes over at that other team.
                        mata out matic in.
                        rooney a mour player.
                        depay will rapidly improve.
players will come to play for mour-fabregas as well?
rashford to middlesborough seems a good call.
kids for united wont get a look in this season-look at his poor treatment of RLC and lukaku-both of whom will be spuperstars

He could but I think Mourinho will use him as a #10. He'll want goals from him. Based on what I know now I'd expect to start next season with Rooney in my FPL squad, I think he'll be great value as a £10m midfielder.

Why shouldn't he stay fit? A broken leg isn't typically a recurring injury. 😕

And yes, he'll be worthwhile, as will Rooney when categorised as a midfielder. Mourinho will make every United starter more valuable for FPL purposes.

Yes, he looked so good in my FPL team till the injury. His attacking instincts will be modified a bit by Mourinho though.

Yep. I was thinking very much about Ashley Cole actually. Shaw is another one in the age group that Mourinho is very good with and I'd expect him to have a very good season.

That double up on Romania, however good they were in qualifying, is unlikely to come good until Matchday 3- you'd be better to wait to wildcard then bring them in.

Anyone considering Aduriz at 6.5? Contemplating him instead of Kane as a 3rd striker, meaning I could upgrade Denayer to Alba, giving me 4 great defenders which could cover him if he doesn't play?

He's great value if he starts - we'll know more after the friendlies. Janko for 7.5 also appears to represent great value.

I might take a punt on him if he plays well vs Bosnia next week...See I'm reluctant to punt on Janko even though he keeps getting mentioned, as he seems similar to my Drmic punt for Switzerland at the last World Cup, if I remember rightly he only grabbed the one goal after people had been raving about how well he was doing! But that's just me being boring aha!

Romania and Albania two of the poorest scoring sides in qualifying - much more defensively orientated. Feel there are at least 2 clean sheets in their group.

Needed a 4.5M starting defender for my Euro team, so had a look what my picks are using Parm's predictions (hot topics).

    Poland: Pazdan
    Wales: Chester
    Slovakia: Durica
    Czech: Kadlec
    Turkey: Gönul
    Croatia: Vrsaljko

    Who looks my best bet?

(NIR and Albania not included as most of their defs are 4.5 or under. Not keen on NIR and already have Albania keeper anyway)

    Euro 2016 Fantasy team

    Rui Patricio - 4.0
    Kos - Hector - Dier - Denayer - 4.0
Payet - Reus - Ozil - Ali - Renato Sanchez
    CR7 - Griezman - Vardy

I think having 3 germans 3 French is key as i see both teams getting to the semis.

Having Vardy ahead of Kane like Lyonnais' template (further up top) gives you the advantage of boosting the midfield and getting a monster like CR7

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What are the implications for FPL with Mourinho expected to take over at Manchester United?

Here's a few of my thoughts on what we can expect

    - There will be just as many clean sheets but with a more settled defence. Luke Shaw looks an outstanding candidate and should come in cheaper than Smalling.

    - Rooney would get more game time in the number 10 role. If he is classified as a midfielder then he could be gold. Mourinho will want goals from him

    - Depay will be encouraged to play a more direct game and will fare much better under Mourinho

    - Mata and Lingard could be on the way out, Rashford to leave on loan

    - At least one new striker and CB will be signed. DDG will stay.

I think you are letting one pre-season colour your assessment Doos. Mourinho's teams generally haven't lacked fitness. 😕

What happened last summer was that Mourinho gave the Chelsea players an extra week's holiday in view of their efforts over a long season and because some of them had played almost continuously for 2 or 3 years with summer tournaments and the likes. It wasn't a bad idea in principle.

The Chelsea players now admit that many of them let him down and came back having gained too many pounds and lost too much fitness. You might argue that Mourinho shouldn't have risked that but trusting his players is one of his strengths as a manager.

Because of a ridiculous pre-season tour in the US it wasn't possible to rectify the situation properly and Chelsea started the season undercooked. Mourinho knew it and was wound up about it. Then Hazard got a mild knock in the late stages of a 2-2 game against Swansea when Chelsea were already down to 10 men. Eva ran on to treat him meaning that he would have to be taken off the pitch leaving Chelsea with 9 men and Mourinho blew. And it was all downhill from there.

Mourinho is too intelligent a man not to have reviewed and learned lessons from what went wrong at Chelsea last season. He has also had 6 months off to unwind - he was still carrying a snarl factor from his time at Real Madrid. United will be getting the best manager in the world in my view and I think they may well win the PL next season. He will spend big money but he will spend it well.

Oh... and for FPL purposes I will probably be starting the season with 2 or 3 United players in my squad. I think Mourinho will improve some of those players - Depay, Shaw, Martial, Schneiderlin - quite a bit. And Rooney as a midfielder is a cinch for me.

Well, fwiw, I fundamentally disagree with you.

Chelsea NEVER achieved full fitness last Season. How much of this is down to the players, I do agree, is a moot point. BUT, they should NEVER have been allowed the excuse, in my view. As to Mourinho's intelligence or otherwise, I leave to you.

All I know is, I would be distraught if he was coming to my club.

Man United fans are sick of boring football, they are sick of an egotistical manager...so the obvious and exciting solution is Mourinho?!? Are people mad? Is bus parking now the newest high octane sport?
I think Mourinho will no doubt win his usual amount of silverware because he is exceptional at winning things...but if fans are expecting to be entertained then they must be secret bus enthusiasts.
I will however enjoy having 2 defenders in FPL from what should be the tightest defence in the league. Cheers to that!

But after 2 years of being distraught by boring football wouldn't you be excited by the prospect of watching your team, with all the new skillful and magical attacking players Mourinho will no doubt sign, turn up every week to play the most attractive football style of...parking the bus...

Shaw could be a great pick, Rooney maybe but only if reclassified as mid.

I am not sure what even Mourinho can do with this squad. Genuine lack of quality in each department. United needs 2 wingers , a striker and 1 CM/DM but Fantasy Wise , I am only interested in Shaw atm 🙂

I agree, yet how did they get 5th in League, nearly 4th and win a Cup this season? Is LVG one of the luckiest managers ever to exist? I really don't get it. The football they played they didn't earn a trophy and/or European Football next season imo

SAF achieved a similar miracle in his second to last PL title. The year Carrick was player of the season and Rooney carried the team to the title.

Did the way Leicester played earn a trophy and CL football? Maybe you'd like to define what kind of football is deserving and what isn't?

Depay won't last under Mourinho and there's nothing to suggest De Gea will stay. You're not in the CL and you're nowhere close to winning the title. A player of his quality needs trophies.

I think it will be a much more stable squad / starting XI. Squad may not be ready to win the title but will certainly challenge for the title. Signings are going to be key - need a new reliable central defender, attacking right side midfielder and a couple of strikers.

Depay is garbage. Not a prem player so respectfully disagree

Maybe not keep as many cs..they should offer more attacking wise than now and not be soley based round keeping a cs. Yes and I know mourinio is defensive but not as much as lvg

Shaw will be first defencive name on my team

Refs hate mourinio this may mean the likes of klattenburg won't be lifting cup for them next season..we can only hope lol

I disagree about Mahrez I'm afraid. He showed great promise in 2014/15 which was noted by a number of pundits. The problem was that Pearson refused to give him any kind of run in the team. He also badly under-used Vardy until the back end of the season.

      - Phil Jones to play every minute of a non-title-winning campaign.
      - Valencia to become a 10-goal-a-season RW
      - Smalling dropped from the first team after signing Varane.

Every new club that José goes to, he picks a fight with one of the superstar players at the club. I don't think he can do it with Rooney, so Smalling might be the fall guy. He's not even that good actually. Good in FPL because of LvG tactics, but put him in Arsenal for example and he'll be getting RCs and shunted out of the XI before long.

They said the same about LVG that he alienated people. The closest that happened at United was the sale of RVP who LVG himself loved. So u can't apply past instances to predict the future for certain

Di Maria, Chicarito, Welbeck to name but 3 he didn't get on with or deemed surplus to requirements.

Yes but this is hardly a fight with a superstar player that Ziro refers to. Di Maria was one of his own signings so doesn't count towards the "new club=fight with a superstar" theory, and Wellbeck needed to go - not good enough to hold down a regular place and needed to be given a run of games to be anywhere near decent, but couldn't get a run of games because of injury or being behind better players in the pecking order.

Chicarito, although a mistake to let go, also was not a big fight. More of an "I wont be playing you that much next season", "Ok, ill go somewhere that will" situation.

I wouldn't like to speculate specific personnel choices too much as each manager likes to make their own stamp on a team and Jose Mourinho especially is a man who makes favourites and isolates those he doesn't like. Usually this is cited as either an attitude or the player not doing enough defensively.

With that said I think as per this season just gone, De Gea, Smalling and Martial should be safe, as should Shaw once he returns to fitness and also any new signings Mourinho makes will come straight in. For everyone else I'll just wait and see how it pans out. Depay is the most interesting one to watch for me as he's a raw talent and one that LVG didn't like. If Mourinho like him and can use him I think we'll see a rejuvenated player, but there's a good chance Jose sees him the same way LVG does. So Depay will be on my early season watchlist but I won't jump straight in unless the opening two fixtures really warrant a gamble.

Performance wise from Man U, I think we'll see just as many clean sheets, but don't expect an attacking transformation overnight. I've no doubt he'll get them back up to 60-65 goals next season as this year's tally of 49 really was an aberration but don't expect an immediate return to Fergie's days of 75+ goals a season.

He will go in and there will be an obvious honeymoon period but once the league settles down and it's clear that United are far apart from the real contenders the cracks will appear.

The United fans will turn a blind eye to the boring football until they start getting beaten in the big games and then they will slowly start to regret what they wished for.

His title win at Chelsea was fortunate, that year they had zero competition, as soon as Spurs spanked them he tightened up and went into dull mode, this current United squad is nowhere near that level so it's going to be a bumpy ride and for once, let's see what he can do when he's really has to rebuild a club because that's the task at hand.

This could scupper Blind's chance of being classified as a defender IMO. I don't think Jose will want to play him CB and FPL will know that. That said, he's far from nailed on now.
