Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Wales

UEFA European Championship debutants Wales are a contradiction in terms.

For a side that lives by a ‘Together Stronger’ motto, they are totally dependent on Gareth Bale to give what is a hard-working and well-organised unit a genuine goal threat.

Chris Coleman’s team expect to make the knock-out stages of the competition. To do so they will probably need one or more players to step up and take the attacking load off their Real Madrid talisman.

Wales face Slovakia at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before an eye-catching 2pm encounter with England five days later and final Group B match against Russia at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

Aside from elimination, qualifying third from the group is the scenario to be avoided as it would most likely set up a Round of 16 clash with either Germany or Spain.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Wales flirted with humiliation in their opener, away at Andorra. Not content with allowing their hosts to score a first competitive goal in four years, they then came within nine minutes of giving the minnows a first group point since 2005.

That man Bale’s late free-kick secured a 2-1 victory and saw Coleman’s men embark on an eight-match unbeaten run, including an impressive 1-0 home win against eventual group winners Belgium.

Seven clean sheets in ten qualifiers was the bedrock of their success, particularly as the 11 goals they managed was the second-lowest return, behind Albania, of the 24 Euro 2016 qualifiers.

A nervy 2-0 defeat in Bosnia-Herzegovina was the only time they shipped more than one goal in a match, requiring them to book their ticket to France with a final fixture 2-0 win over Andorra.

In three friendlies since qualifying, Wales have hardly inspired: defeats to Holland and Ukraine and a 1-1 draw at home to Northern Ireland secured with an 89th minute Simon Church penalty mean Coleman’s charges will go into their one and only Euro 2015 warm-up, on June 5, on the back of three defeats from their last five matches.

Most Appearances: Wayne Hennessey, Chris Gunter, Ashley Williams, Gareth Bale (10); Neil Taylor, Hal Robson-Kanu (9); Aaron Ramsey (8), Simon Church, Ben Davies, Joe Ledley (7).

Most goals: Gareth Bale (7); Aaron Ramsey (2); David Cotterill, Hal Robson-Kanu (1).

Most assists: Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey (2), Ben Davies, Jazz Richards, Andy King (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

The pressure on Gareth Bale to perform is huge. Handed a more advanced central role under Coleman, he played a part in nine of their qualifying goals, courtesy of seven strikes and two assists, and also fired more than twice the number of attempts than any team-mate.

Priced at 10.5 and listed as a forward in the Uefa game, Bale currently sits in 10% of sides. Whilst the stats show he clearly thrives on being his country’s main man, that’s still a big outlay for a player, like his team, with no international tournament experience whatsoever.

Aaron Ramsey, at 7.5, represents a more measured acquisition. Although he scored just twice in the qualifiers, the Arsenal midfielder produced just five shots less than Bale inside the box, whilst he also led the way for key passes, despite mustering just two assists. Ramsey is also number one for crossing and corner kicks, which strengthens his appeal in the Draft Kings game.

Those seven clean sheets in qualifying should make a Welsh defender a worthy investment. Neil Taylor may emerge as the best option for points at both ends of the pitch – fielded as a left wing-back in Coleman’s preferred 5-3-2 formation, the Swansea man made more crosses and double the number of key passes as Chris Gunter on the right.

Currently owned by 1% of managers, Taylor’s 5.0 value in the Uefa game makes him a cheaper option than club colleague Ashley Williams (at 5.5, with 5% ownership status). Furthermore, Taylor was top for interceptions and second for tackles in qualifying, strengthening his Draft Kings potential.

Number one Wayne Hennessey (5.0) is also worth a look at 5.0 – the Palace stopper registered 21 saves in qualifying, a tally bettered by only four other keepers. If Wales can rediscover their appetite for clean sheets, Hennessey will also be an attractive option in the Draft Kings game where shut-outs earn more points for keepers.

THE LONG SHOTS

If price is a factor, James Chester, at 4.5 in Uefa, could be a budget enabler at the back, particularly in the Draft Kings game, which doesn’t reward the clearances and blocks at which Ashley Williams excels. Chester equalled Williams for successful tackles and beat him for interceptions, despite featuring in four fewer qualifiers.

The 6.0-priced Hal Robson-Kanu offers some value for those on a budget. Having started nine of the team’s ten qualifiers, he looks a nailed-on starter who could benefit from the potential freedom afforded him by the desire of opponents to concentrate on shutting down Bale. End product remains the issue, however, with the Reading man scoring just once from a total of only 14 attempts in qualifying.

Upcoming Friendlies

Sweden v Wales (June 5).

I was watching the replay of Slovakia vs Germany game - Germany's performance did not reflect the score at all. The weather conditions were just dismal, pools of water everywhere - and Skrtel and Pekarik just kept on kicking and shoving and pushing. I'd say Sane and Brandt were legitimately fouled inside the box twice.

As for the players who played, the WBs were totally ineffective (Rudy/Hector), Gotze and Schurrle were basically invisible. However, the pivot of Weigl and Kimmich were brilliant all night - until both got subbed and they looked really shaky - I'd expect one of the two to start alongside Khedira. Leroy Sane is some talent though, incredible dribbling skills in a field where the ball just stuck to the group.

    My Germany XI.

    ----------------------------------------Neuer
    --Ginter------------Boateng-------------------Hummels-----------Hector
    --------------Khedira----------------------------Weigl/Kimmich
    ---Ozil-------------------------------Gotze----------------------------Reus/Schurrle
    ----------------------------------------Muller

Sorry, I made a mistake. Replace Gotze with Kroos - Gotze will likely be a super sub like he was in the WC.

He played the whole '14 WC, and did pretty well, I remember. He did the same at Real in the second half of the season - Casemiro and Modric sitting beside him. I think that is his best position.

Definitely this. He's always looked like a bit of a liability in the double pivot to be honest, but does wonders in that CAM position even when he doesn't have the ball.

Thoughts on this? I have NO clue really. So could use some advices 🙂

    Patricio (Vargic)
    Alba Denayer Smalling (Ogbonna Cathcart)
Reus Alaba Alli KDB Morata (Rafa Silva)
    Morata Kane Muller

      *Vargic? Is he a starter?

*Keep tabs on Denayer. May start, may not start. Get rid of Ogbonna altogether, he won't even get a sniff. Alba to Juanfran, Ogbonna to Giachherini/Bonucci?

*Nice midfield. Not much to say, though I find Reus and Muller a bit too much - but the Germans may do well in group stages.

*Again, Morata is not 100% nailed. Aduriz may start? Keep tabs. Someone like Janko or Lafferty is atleast nailed.

England may get a couple of 0-0s given how blunt their attack is. Wales and Russia aren't the most prolific of teams anyway.

Yes, he has been their first choice leftback for more than a year now - provides natural width as well. If Howedes were to play, I'd think he'll fit in for Hummels if he is injured for a game or two.

Can't speak for Rudy at RB though. He plays midfield for his club, so it could be Can/Ginter who plays there.

Daley Blind and Juan Mata will be high-profile victims of Jose Mourinho's arrival at Manchester United this summer, Sky Sports News HQ understands.

It is believed Mourinho will approve the sale of both players this summer should United receive acceptable bids, with the expectation he can sign players to directly replace them.

Mourinho sanctioned Mata's sale to Man Utd from Chelsea in January 2014, despite the Spaniard being named Chelsea's Player of the Season six months earlier. Mourinho was unhappy with Mata's work rate and pace, and also held doubts about the his tactical suitability for his preferred system - it is understood he has not changed his mind since.

Meanwhile, Blind does not fit the physical profile Mourinho looks for in his central defenders, deeming him also surplus to requirements. The former Chelsea boss has a history of signing tall, fast, strong central defenders, such as Kurt Zouma and Raphael Varane.

I won't hold it against Mourinho if he's sold. Its important that the players fit the system. If Blind is considered surplus to requirements for that reason then I think its fair enough. Its not to say he's a bad player, he's an excellent player. But sometimes excellent players don't fit the system. It was the same with Mata at Chelsea even though he was player of the year the previous season before being sold.

The important players have all been mentioned. For example Iniesta in Spain's tactical analysis -

" Especially Andrés Iniesta seems to be the personification of Spain’s revival. In Vicente del Bosque’s 4-3-3 system, the 31-year-old is a pivotal point offensively and defensively. Although some could expect Sergio Busquets to be the right kind of player to provide presence in the middle of the park, it is Iniesta who conducts the team tremendously. "

        This.

They might be the best tactical read out there, but you have to question their knowledge when they don't even mention Lassana Diarra throughout the piece on France.

I took a look at the piece on Sweden as well, and it was a spot on analysis on our tactics. But again, I'd like to raise questions over their ability to predict line-ups.

Wait for Payet to be a confirmed starter and get on that instead 🙂

Matuidi is a good shout and looked a decent fantasy asset in the first half, when he played alongside Diarra and Pogba in midfield. He got forward a lot, like he does in PSG. Then Kanté came in for Diarra at half-time and after that Matuidi dropped deeper and was probably their most defensive mid. If it was an outspoken tactic, or just because Kanté runs so much I don't know.

But wait for news on their starting XI. I'd go Payet over Matuidi if he plays.

Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko are great attacking punts, but do we trust Ukraine to hold their own in that group?

Poland and Germany games will be tense rival-ish affairs, and both Poland and Germany boast more talent throughout the team, although Ukraine's wingers will be dangerous on the attack..

If Payet is likely to start for 0.5 more I'd go with him.

I'll give you that he did score some crucial goals against PSV and others, including the pen to equalise against Utrecht, however that still brings him to only 6 goals out of 21 in the league this season against top half teams. Most are against trash like Excelsior and Roda.

I haven't seen anything of him playing for Poland but I have watched all of his games for Ajax, including all the home games in the flesh. Milik's main problem is that if he doesn't score then he offers nothing to the team. His movement is poor, he is very limited technically, he can't use his right foot. For someone of his height he's also not as good as he could be in the air. Fans also often get the impression that he doesn't try hard enough when chasing the ball.

I think it could be a Dutch thing, here people expect their players to be great footballers, especially at Ajax. There is the constant search for the 'Ajax striker', who fits into the system. Unfortunately the last one seemed to be Pantelic but he left 6 years ago!

But after his marginal improvement over the last third of the season I'd be happy enough if he stayed, but only if we sign another quality striker. You can't rely on him on his own as he goes missing for games/weeks. Hopefully a good Euros leads to a big turning point in his career, either for us, or to a big money move.

also, the decision to take him off in the last game was indeed stupid, but the only reason we were still in with a chance was because in the previous home game against Utrecht De Boer put vd Hoorn (a centre back) up front with Milik for the last 5 minutes and he set up both goals.

+Sevilla are not a bigger club than Ajax. Just more successful in the last 5 years. We are both selling clubs.

              • 8 Years

I didn't use the right words, Ajax are one of the biggest clubs in the history, no doubt. I was just thinking about the recent status in Europe and overall sucess over the last few years.

And this situation may actually change soon, if the rumours about Monchi leaving Sevilla are true.

All of the arguments you mentioned sound rational and as I saw Milik in an Ajax shirt only on a few occasions, I won't want to try to debunk something coming from an Ajax season ticket holder. 🙂

From what I see, though, is that expectations for him are set up extremely high in Ajax, given that he's only 22 years old. I wouldn't expect such a young striker to always perform in the biggest games. 6 goals in 21 is not the best result, but it's also not the end of the world and he can only improve with time.

In the national team Lewandowski is a huge help for Milik it seems. All eyes are focused on the Bayern Munchen striker, so I'd imagine it's much easier for Milik to focus on his own game. Crucial goals against Germany and Scotland prove that.

And in terms of Euro fantasy... I agree that his right foot is useless, I agree that he needs to improve his aerial presence, but my God - the kid definitely knows where the goal is. At 7.5, he's a bargain in my opinion.

There is a good chance that there will be more points for my team.

Not saying he will outscore Lewandowski. But we won't score as many goals as one would expect, so these point differences between Lewy and Milik shouldn't be big.

And I love the perspective of making a good use of the additional 4.0m.

Depends how you intend on spending the 4m of a difference.. I see you're looking at 4.0m defenders, whereas my cheapest defender is 5.0 (with the other 4 being 5.5 at a minimum)..
That's the difference between Lewa and Milik imo, also comes down to how many *more* goals do you expect from Lewa over Milik?

                    • 8 Years
                    7 years, 11 months ago

Exactly. You have to put it into the bigger perspective, whether you want bank on Lewy scoring at least 2 goals in the group with Milik blanking in all of the games, or whether you prefer to take the money and run (or maybe even improve the rest of your team).

Approximately two to one. So maybe an extra two goals in the first round. That's 8 points, if I get the captaincy wrong as usual.

My 1/2 4.0 defenders will all be replaceable, and I would argue that I have as good a chance of 18 at the back as you. Also, I have Alba ... 😉

I definitely don't hold Milik to blame for any of his (current) shortcomings. It's entirely the club's fault (Overmars, the rest of the board & FdB). We are in a position with having only 1 striker because they decided the only other striker signing this season would be a loan for Sanogo. Who ended up being one of the worst signings in history. You can't expect to win titles and succeed in Europe like this.

There's certainly time for him to improve massively, and he could do really well at the Euros. I'm not sure the step up in level is as much as people think. Maybe NI are on a par with Heerenveen or Heracles! 😉

The initial advice on him was just to make people aware that his stats don't tell the whole story, but yeah he could take advantage of the space that Lewa makes for him.

                    that would be good!

He was looking at becoming a really good player. He scored some important goals helping us towards one of our titles, but then he was out injured for 16 months, he returned at the end of the 2014/15 season and scored some goals and it looked like he would return strongly next season.

Unfortunately this season he hasn't been at his best, mostly coming off the bench and often giving the ball away. He may not have been helped by FdB's very prescriptive tactical advice, and the crowd turned a fair bit on him, lots of groans and even boos. Hopefully he comes good at Boro but he'll have to fit into another very rigid tactical structure under Karanka, at least according to Boro fans I know.

The 6 in 21 argument makes it sound like scoring 15 goals against these other teams made him worse. 6 goals in the biggest matches of the league may be very good, depending on how many of these matches you count. Anyway, he also got 7 assists, and if you look at his scoring record, it does not look like his goals have come excessively against any of the smallest, undeniably weak Dutch clubs.

15 out of 21 is pretty excessive. And the first goal he scored against top half opposition this season was the 28th Feb! So I suppose at least you could say he ran into a bit of form! 😉

Probably they shouldn't be discounted but I wonder how many of these clubs people on here will have watched or even heard of before!

apparently I can't count 😉 Vitesse were in the top half so replace them with De Graafschap.

My point was that many here won't have seen/hard of most/some of those teams (not everyone of course).

Interesting on Vitesse being Chelsea's reserve team. Their loanees were perhaps not as good as previously because these are the numbers of league games started by them:

                      Baker - 23
                      Solanke - 21
                      Brown - 12
                      Nathan - 4

Anyway, all top scorers score majority of their goals against the bottom table. There are not that many goals in the top matches, so if you're a top scorer, you will have scored a lot against the weaker teams. That's how top scorers are made (with perhaps the exception of Lewandowski who seems to flourish against the top table opponents, strangely). E.g. Aguero scored 15 of his 24 goals against PL bottom table.

If you look at Milik's G+A against other top4 clubs, it's 3+2 in 5 matches, of which he played full minutes only in one, in one he only played 16 minutes, other 45 minutes, scoring his points mostly in the matches he played 80 and 90 minutes. In whole, 294 minutes, makes 1.5 GA90. That's a very nice rate.

it does look fairly flattering, but you must remember that there is not a top4 right now. Feyenoord & AZ were 21 and 25 point behind and were poor this year. AZ were terrible until the winterstop and near the relegation zone.

But fair enough he did pretty well in terms of goals and assists there, that's the reason why my opinion on him isn't worse, like it was 6 months ago. I gave him a little break after March this season.

Hey guys, best nailed on 5.0 defender right now? Sat on Vermaelen right now but don't feel convinced by the Belgium defense.
    Current team:

    Patricio // 4.0
    Alba // Hector // Vermalen* // Dragovic (4.0)
    KDB // Alaba // Perisic (Saches, 4.5)
    Ronaldo // Muller // Giroud

    Thoughts?

Good point. Maybe his tournament is in two years time..

Think I'm starting with Shaqiri. Whether it's Giroud/Harnik/Janko accompanying him depends on Junuzovic..

I'll almost definitely have 2 attacking Austrian players.. Just trying to choose between Junuzovic/Alaba/Harnik/Janko.. tis tough! Alaba looks profitable due to set pieces and being the driving force behind the team..

Not much to choose between the other 3 though. The fact that they go up in price by 0.5 as you get further up the pitch evens them out..

When we played Austria in the qualifiers, Junuzovic, Harnik and Janko posed a greater threat iirc. Junuzovic is 6.5, I think, and that could be an alternative.

Alaba did score twice in two games against us though . Both penalties.

Unfortunately he is not because as a supersub he holds immense value. He always does extremely well as a sub. If Wilmots had any balls, he'd kick Hazard out of the team.

He should, imo, having started 4 of Bel last 5 games. The one he didn't start he wasn't in the squad so presumably injured.

I think his greatest threat isn't from carrasco, but rather a 4-3-3 with KdB and Hazard out wide.

Not an expert on Belgium though, so this is speculation.

I don't think he is. Only if they play 4-2-3-1 is there a place for him on the right flank, and even then he's not nailed on. I like him very much too, but the uncertainty of starts puts me off.

I'm always a little enticed by Lukaku, but with his bad form and not great fixtures, I'll just monitor. KdB seems a better option.

If Lukaku performs against Italy he could be a very viable option for a gw2 wc though. I can see Belgium having a really good game against us (Swe).

Plays for just promoted Bundesliga RB Leipzig where he got 8 goals and 7 assists this season.

Our best player in the play-off vs Denmark and looked rather good in yesterday's friendly vs Slovenia, where he played first half.

          Currently on

Alba, Rodriguez, 5.0 tbd, Lindelof and Guerreiro with 1 ITB to upgrade Guerreiro if he doesn't seem nailed.

I'm on Juanfran - Rodriguez - Schar - Bonucci - 5.0... Not sure who that 5.0 is going to be though, it HAD been Dragovic since the initial drafts but my confidence in their backline is wavering slightly.

Not sure, but Rodriguez took a one in the qualifiers but didn't convert it. Before that, he last time took one 6 years ago, scoring it against Germany in a friendly.

This may be all guessing game since they've got so few penalties and Rodriguez missed the last one. He has continued to convert them for Wolfsburg though, so I'd say it's probably still advantage Rodriguez. Only few coaches change the penalty taker for one miss.

Btw, how many top strikers do we see fluff penalties?

              Quite a few.

Absolute certain starter now that Carvajal is out.
      Bellerin is 3rd choice.

Who are the suspects? Griezmann, Giroud and Pogba?

Last one of the current squad to have taken a penalty for France was Gignac, who also boasts a pretty fine penalty record for his club sides. Griezmann and Giroud were not on field when he took that one, though. Pogba was. Pogba took them for the youth internationals, but apparently won't take them for the A team.

Griezmann has never taken a one for France, but has only been brought up to the first team quite recently. Giroud, I don't think he has taken a one for France either but am not sure. Griezmann's current star status and Giroud's great penalty record may weigh. I don't know what weighs the most. I know I'd give penalties to Giroud, but despite some wild rumours, I actually am not Didier Deschamps. 😉

So i done a rough real team using all the tips I have learnt, opinions noted 😛

    Sommer (Patricio)
    Hector - Juanfran - Hector (Denayaer - 4.0 - is there any?)
    Hakan - Martial - Ozil - Alli (Rafa S)
    Janko - Lewan - Muller

    Give me your worst...

I think there are better options than Hakan at that price. Not sure on Martial, Payet is a real threat to him starting. We'll know France's starting XI before deadline so keep an eye.

I can't see Lindelof not starting for us (Swe). He is 4.0

      Rafa Silva is not nailed.

B for me, just think Juanfran is great value. He did provide 3 assists during qualifying so he does have some attacking potential. Set up equaliser on Saturday night for Athletico

    Patricio, Kozáčik
    Juanfran, Chester, Lindelof, Dragovic, Guerreiro
    Reus, Payet, Perisic, Grosicki, 4.5
    Ronaldo, Muller, Giroud

On this currently. Defence is controversial. What do you think?

    Little morning questionnaire

HP or Ketchup with your Sausage and Bacon barm?

Who will be the surprise team in the euros? (Im going Austria)

Ozil worth extra 1.5 over Kroosy

    best 7.5 Mid over Hakan

Lewan - Muller - Janko a good strikerfore, or Giroud for one of them?

      Ketchup by a mile.

      Austria / Slovakia.

      Yes imo.

Cesc/Alaba maybe for 7.0, otherwise Konoplyanka/Hamsik tempt me.

I personally think Lewa is overpriced, same as Ronaldo.

    Almer (5.0) / Kozáčik (4.5)

    Alba (7.0) / Juanfran (5.5) / Schär (5.5) / Mangala/Rami (5.0) / Giaccherini (5.0)

    Reus (9.5) / Perišić (7.5) / Junuzović (6.5) / Mak (6.0) / R.Silva (4.5)

    Müller (10.5) / Giroud (8.5) / Kane (8.5)

1.0m ITB. How should I spend it?

Team built for the first 2 Match Days with a plan to WC after that. I have gone with a heavy defence approach as I see some CS bankers in the group stage. Thoughts?

Yes. I am sure of that. Juanfran and Alba also have have a lot of attacking threat imo.

I am playing the percentages with a French defender. Romania have an awful attack , so do Albania.

current draft, was set on Lewandowski until now but I'm still uncomfortable not having him. Selling him would however improve the backline of my team.

    Patricio (4m)
    XX XX Koscielny
