Up next in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Tottenham.

We kick start our analysis by assessing the north London outfit’s team statistics in Mauricio Pochettino’s second season in charge and compare them to the rest of the Premier League. After that, we then take a close look at their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources with one eye on the season kick-off in just three weeks’ time.

Pochettino’s side finished third last time around, 11 points behind champions Leicester and one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.

That fails to tell the full story, though, as Spurs were still in with a chance of winning the title right up until their Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea, where a 2-2 draw at the Bridge, which saw the visitors pick up nine yellow cards, handed the crown to Claudio Ranieri’s men.

Subsequent losses to Southampton and relegated Newcastle – a 5-1 hammering at St James’ – meant their season ended in bitter disappointment, with the Gunners climbing above them to clinch the runners-up slot on the final day of 2015/16.

Would like some thoughts on this team:

    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Shaw Williams Friend (McAuley, Stones)
    KDB(vc) Mkhitaryan Siggy Townsend (Capoue)
    Aguero(c) Lukaku Negredo

Planning on a WC for GW 3 or GW 4, maybe GW 5 at tops. Like the look of this, somehow Shaw is the player I'm not feeling too confident about...

There's an old rule against captain and vice captain in the same game.
      Could be cancelled or something

I've actually never heard about that! Would probably go with Siggy(vc) then. Outside of captaincy, does it look okay?

Man City vs Bolton, FFS is all in on the Kun/Silva double up with C/VC and both are benched and blank. Fortunately, some of us had Clint Dempsey as their vice captain that day for his brace.

Lack of Chelsea is a worry for me. Don't have the guts to drop KDB though. I think he'll be the highest scoring mid.

Also, seems to be a lot of uncertainty around the Chelsea lineup next season...

It does imo, especially given the fact that Siggy played at the Euros. The market is still open, though, and Swansea may make some signings to fill this striker spot. Or Guidolin can possibly decide to play Paloschi there.

A touch wary about Ayala at this stage

Still recovering from an ankle injury and yet to play in pre season with a contract standoff as he is in the last year of his deal

I think deulofeu and Mirallas look like good picks at the start under Koeman

Deulofeu for assists and Mirallas for goals

I would prefer Mirallas by a little bit at this stage, with minimal left mid cover at Everton and Deulofeu rarely lasting beyond 70 mins when he starts along with competition with Lennon

    3. Eze Really?

Wait for Funes. Could be a winner.
Wait for Del Boy. He could really flourish but Ronald will want more from him defensively.
Not being biased but I think Everton could have gold in their ranks.

Is 424 some mythical formation? Did peeps make it up by playing FIFA? Can you really have a formation that's 'that' attacking? History seems to answer this with a resoundingly 'yes' vote.

Well, a prime example of a modern take on a 424 system is during Pep's stint at Barcelona. At times he'd use this experimental shape as his backup, like he did so vs Stuttgart in the first knock-out round of the CL in 2010. This is a good visual as to how the classic 442 with a rigid midfield deployed by Christian Gross's Stuttart, contrasts with Pep's more fluid, & adaptable 424 (with Barcelona's ideals heavily implemented of course).

    (courtesy of Michael Cox)
    http://www.zonalmarking.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/barcelona-4-0-stuttgart-tactics-lionel-messi.jpg

    http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/19/barcelona-4-2-4-formation-guardiola-messi/barca_average_positions_4-2-4/

The four forwards here are largely all operating on the same horizontal space in the final third. Wingers are pushed up way, way, way further forward unlike a 442 (or diamond 442). Apart from Iniesta's unique role here - playing a little bit deeper than the forward three as he'll be the playmaker & the one bringing the ball in from the left to make those diagonal runs thereby connecting the line with the forwards. This is very much a stark contrast to your traditional 4231 shapes which will have a clearly defined lone-striker up top, a central player behind him 'in the hole' usually & the two narrow wingers who will occupy the space differently in attack as opposed to a winger in the 424. So there's a clear line of three behind the striker pretty much.

No, 424 isn't a myth, & yes it's different to your stereotypical 442. There's various examples in international football of this 'fictitious' formation being utilized effectively. In the most basic sense without going into too much detail, they're both different systems that will utilize the wingers & forwards differently. Allowing for a more dynamic attack.

Another example of a top-team deploying the 424 shape was Brazil in the 1970 world cup (where coincidentally, they won). A more 'by-the-book' 424 if you will, & contrary to Pep's 424 which would play like an asymmetric 433 at times, Brazil's 424 would play as a 4231 when not in possession.

Yh that's annoying, in my head I know Hazard or Martial to a mid priced mid and Wilson to Lukaku (eg) would give a solid structure but then I'd have no captain option for gw3 if it's Haz or no United attack if it's Martial. Those Chelsea and United attack spots are so frustrating.

I know you like Austin, as do many others, I'm just comfortable with Gray being the big fish at Burnley as opposed to Austin with his competition. If it all becomes clear who's number 1 for Saints Austin/Long will take one of them forward places for sure.

I took this team as a template, and made a few changes that include players I want or like, and ended up with this:
        Foster - Jakupovic
        Shaw - Souare - VVD
        Mahrez - Ayew - Martial - Hazard
        Rondon - Aguero - Long
        Not bad, right?

guys urgent help needed... my registered fpl email address has become inactive and hence I can't receive any communication from FPL and affiliates. I can login through that account on FPL but I fear that since I can't access that email account anymore, FPL won't be able to contact me if I win any prizes. Is there a way to change my registered email address? If not, pls tell me how to leave leagues I've joined, so that I can make another account and rejoin them.

    Thanks.

Click on the league with the middle button if you have a 3 button mouse. You can try clicking the mouse wheel then left click also.

They have really stuffed up the league pages so far. My mouse lets me do it. I could do it for you if you gave me details via email. The link below gets you into the premierleague site where you may be able to change your email address. You could just create a new account and forget the other one once you leave the leagues.

I couldn't leave leagues by clicking the mouse wheel either. If there isn't a simpler method then there ought to be.

I emailed FPL about it this afternoon and am waiting for a reply from them.

I'm not planning to change my email address, but when I reach the limit of 15 leagues I will need to leave one of them if I want to join a different one, so it is important to know how to do it.

take your mouse cursor to the right and click on the cross mark(you might not be able to see it but just click randomly on the right of the league name and you'll be asked whether you want to leave the league)... try it...

Thanks IG. I can't see any cross mark, but that does work. 😀

I think FPL ought to make the cross mark visible (and also make the method of changing captains and vice-captains more obvious), or there are going to be a lot of very frustrated FPL managers who haven't discovered how to do these things.

There always were plenty of dead teams with their goalkeeper as permanent vice-captain, and there will probably be even more this season if they don't do something about it.

Double United attack with no Aguero and 5.5 sitting on the bench is all lop sided. It's your game at the end of the day but personally I'd drop Mikhy to a 4.5 and upgrade Lukaku to Kun and spend the other 1m as you please

I don't like useless players in team, i like rotating. And i'm not gonna use WC before GW 6. In GW 2 and 4, Southampton will play against Arsenal away and ManUtd away, Austin will go to bench and i will play 3-5-2 with Fisher in 5 men midfield who is playing against Sunderland and CP. Maybe i will drop Ibra od Mkhi, but not both.

Well, good advices, but, i like taking risks haha. Like, i'm constantly telling people that City will strugle a lot under Pep. That Fischer will be so good, that Firmino will thrive in first 5 gameweeks, that Chelsea will have best defence in league this year(i'm trying to make room for Terry). It just makes it more interesting this way. So that i could do the "I TOLD YOU SO".

Are there rotation risks for Austin and Long? Koeman played 3-5-2, but now he's gone. No room for both of them.

      1. Freddie Cutecat

Puel has been playing a 4-3-1-2 in pre season, with the front three being quite fluid

This means Tadic played in the hole rather than his usual left mid

That leaves two spots up top between Austin, long, j rod and Redmond, with Redmond being quite impressive in both pre season games.

Obviously long has yet to feature given his participation in the Euros but has returned to training so yet to see how he fits under Puel

I think at this stage it looks like two of long, Austin and Redmond will start with j rod on the bench

There are also rumblings Southampton could be interested in Valere Getmain, a striker Puel had on loan from Monaco at Nice last season. So further transfer activity could put another spanner in the works

I think best to monitor over pre season and envisage a lot of tweaks in the early part of the season, with Tadic being to only nailed on attacker at this stage if he is fit

Really aren't many around, apart from the FFS podcast. This one's excellent though & it's run by one of the DZ regulars, Walsh: https://soundcloud.com/fmlfpl

Yeah these guys seem to know there stuff. I'd be keener if every 3rd word wasn't "f#$k"

It's part of that grassroots vibe, gives the podcast some character 😉

I like the Always Cheating guys myself. They don't take themselves too seriously, and things don't get too technical, but it's a good listen and is long enough to let me listen to one podcast while cutting my entire lawn.

    re-post

Are there rotation risks for Austin and Long? Koeman played 3-5-2, but now he's gone. No room for both of them.

And what if Koeman play 3-5-2 with Everton? I think Baines/Coleman would be essential in that scenario.

I would expect Austin to lead the line and Long in one of the wide positions maybe..

It's a wait and see situation if you want a nailed sotons striker.

Koeman didn't play all the games with 3 5 2 all the season though. It wil be gold indeed if it's the Everton formation this year.
