Projections & Rate My Team Are Now Live

After last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tools have been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live.

Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the summer friendlies reveal more on likely starting lineups and tactics.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score in each Gameweek.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

When will these Projections be updated?
We will update the projections almost each day in the pre-season. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season – again, almost on a daily basis, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. Major updates are made on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. You have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

How Accurate is Rate My Team?
We’re not going to try and claim that Rate My Team is X% accurate – we’ve never attempted to track a figure, focusing our efforts on keeping the tool up to date to serve those who use it.

Instead what we will say is that the tool was used on a weekly basis by Fantasy Football Scout member Ed Masters who finished third in the FPL last season – check out his interview with us here.

Before that, both Tom Fenley and Simon March were members of Fantasy Football Scout and also used Rate My Team – Tom and Simon were FPL champions in 2014/15 and 2013/14.

We’ve previously created a number of movies, together with the creator of Rate My Team Chris Atkinson, which explain the tools in full detail. You can view these below.

I noticed that, he played well to deserve the spot last season also. Just was wondering why the Austin love on here. I'd rather pick Wilson or gray and bring Austin in after we know more

Probably memories of when we got him for QPR seasons ago for about the same price (6m I think) and then he ended up being one of the picks of the season haha, bit of hopeful getting ahead of the curve and all that!

Realistically there are loads of options at 6.5 though who might be better to start with, tricky one!

So much "luck" last year with the Kun captaincy vs newcastle and the early Ighalo & Alli pickups. Once you get that big lead, go for the obvious players to block, best advice I got last year.

Not sure about Watford for some reason, they dropped off in form last season when they became safe.. I'll wait and see considering there are some good 6.5s

good point. I like Carroll and Gray at 6.5. Gray reminds me of Ings from a couple seasons ago. But that spike in form was most likely because the players were trying to impress their new manager, then they learned where they stood in the pecking order and got lazy. Well now they have a new manager, everyone is rested and ready to go. Could wait and see but I'm WC'ing early so I'll probably punt on Ighalo.

Time for some bold statements for the season ahead -

    - Vardy wont score more than 10 goals this season
    - Janssen will score more goals than Kane
    - Hull, Burnley and Watford will be relegated
    - Chelsea will win the league
    - Arsenal will sign a striker but Giroud will still be their top scorer
    - Hart will lose his England place to Butland
    - Ibrahimovic will score more goals than Aguero

-- Vardy will only score 10 but will get 4 in the first month to lead everyone astray.
-- Martial and Rooney will both score more than Micki.
-- United will lead the league in goals scored.
-- Aguero will be top FPL scorer.
--Kompany and Terry both ranked in top 5 DEF scorers in FPL.

So with FPL now open the RMTs are coming thick and fast and I have put together an analysis of the most picked players for each position to come up with a sort of average RMT that I thought I would share. The team below is based on 240 teams I have taken from the site.

This team is based on a weeks worth of data and I intend on assessing another 240 teams each week until the season starts to see how the average team changes.

      The current average team is:

      Foster – 25.4%
      Jakupovic – 24%

      Shaw – 16.3%
      Fried – 11.8%
      Paredes – 5.1%
      Baines – 5.0%
      Souare – 40%

      Mhitaryan – 10.6%
      Townsend – 7.3%
      Hazard – 6.2%
      Sigurdsson – 5.5%
      Eriksen – 4.8%

      Aguero – 29.5%
      Lukaku – 11.8%
      Gray – 9.6%

This team however is not possible as it comes to £103.00

Observations on last season’s tops scorers by position (% selected in RMTs):

      GK

      Cech - 2.2%
      Gomes – 0.6%
      Schmeichel – 0.6%

      DF

      Bellerin -0.8%
      Alderweireld – 0.3%
      Koscielny – 0.3%
      Moreno – 0.8%
      Fuchs – 0.6%
      Huth - 0.0%

      MF

      Mahrez – 1.7%
      Ozil – 1.8%
      Eriksen – 4.8%
      Ayew – 1.6%
      Payet – 2.2%
      Sanchez – 0.2%

      Vardy – 1.8%
      Kane – 1.6%
      Ighalo – 0.1%
      Deeney – 0.5%

The low % in picks I expect comes down to a combination of fixture difficulty, over inflated prices and the appeal of shiny new players coming into the league, however it may be food for thought for some.

I will post a revised average RMT in a week to see what’s changed and try and asses why.

Is Souare nailed now Tomkins is there? I heard Ward may play in his position.

Ah OK, so exactly 70.8 people have Aguero and 28.32 people chose Lukaku.

Na mate, some people's teams didn't included all 3 strikers so for example

              Aguero lukaku 6.0
so this is why your numbers are wrong.

Already have one of those. The other doesn't interest me. 🙂

Firmino was in my first draft and he's a player I want. He got removed because of early fixtures and a planned wildcard after GW3. But I'm happier having him now I know he has a decent record against Arsenal.

Haha, I'm going with Nolito, so we're either on the same, or opposite, page 😉 I see Eriksen as a good option long term but not so much at the start. Keeping an eye on Lamela as a potential future punt at his price.

Fair enough, 8.5 is probably the perfect price for Firmino, he'll get points, I'm just going to wait and see what Klopp has in his mind for this season.

Firmino having the summer off is a very good point though.. He might take the onus off Coutinho for the start..

Agreed. I really don't rate him as a fpl pick when in midfield. Kinda same feeling for Coutinho.
But saying that, when sturridge is injured, firmino will be straight in my team!

How about this for a slightly different draft?

      Mandanda (Hennessey)
      Shaw, VVD, Friend, (Kone/Fernandez)
      Ayew, Mki, Haz, Zaha (Leko)
      Aguero, Lukaku, Musa

Which 4.5 defender would you go for?

      A. FRIEND (MID)
      B. SOUARE (CRY)

      Thanks!

Friend. Even better Ayala if you can find 0.5.

Why would you rate Ayala higher? I'm stuck between them atm

Ayala is a massive goal threat. But is a promoted defender worth £5.0m?

Goal threat. Friend is a pretty poor crosser, you are relying on clean sheets with him. Ayala gets the odd goal.

              Great thanks for the tip.
I was concerned with his injury prone-ness and his propensity for yellow cards as well?

I have Friend. But if I had 0.5 spare it would be Ayala. I also have Evans over Dawson for the same reason.

Haha I'm looking at Ayala, Keane and Dawson. Expensive I know but I'm in a 10-man draft league so running out of money probably isn't an issue. Getting 15 nailed players who aren't injury prone is the issue

Here's a set of substitutions you don't see everyday! Gotta love preseason!

Boro: Konstantopoulos (Mejias 70), Nsue (Barragan 70), Baptiste (Morris 70), Jackson (Gibson 70), Reach (Friend 70), Forshaw (Clayton 70), De Sart (de Roon 70), Stuani (Ramirez 70), Fischer (Negredo 70), De Pena (Adomah 70), Nugent (Rhodes 70).

I've decided to go against a United attacker until we see how they perform. Mahrez Martial Mkhitaryan at 9.5... If I have to pick one, it'd have to be Mahrez. Easy switch over. He has a chip on his shoulder. People think he's a one season wonder and he's being quoted at 45mil, 5mil less than Sterling lol. Besides KDB is eating my midfield budget, I think he is essential, seeing as how Muller was utilized by Pep last season. KDB will be City's Muller.

What happens if I have 3 players from one team and another one of my players transfers to that team? Does it force me to make a transfer or do I get 4 players from the same team?
