Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

Anything to change with this team? I have 1 FT and 0 ITB, considering just sticking this week as there are a few hopefuls in there (Vardy, Firmino, Van Dijk). Couldn't afford Hazard or Ibra without a hit or wildcarding.

    Foster
    Van Djik, Shaw, Stones, Friend
    Barkley, Mahrez. Tadic, Firmino
    Aguero, Vardy

    Jaku - Capoue, Grey, Parades

Who would you get rid of in mid, Mahrez or Firmino? I'll have to shift one of these to get Ibra in.

Townsend a good shout if u already have Redmond. Maybe Bolasie or Delefeo but both a game time risk.

Would you change anything here with 2FT and £0.0 ITB?

    Foster / Jakupovic
    Stones / Valencia / Friend / Souare / Kone
    Hazard / Eriksen / Redmond / Tadic / Capoue
    Aguero / Ibra / Gray

It doesn't feel like there are pressing needs. Kone/Souare bench upgrades maybe? Eriksen could come out...

To be fair, GW2 looked a good week to punt and look what happened 😉

Haz and Redmond do both look tempting, but I can't overlook Kubra for the armband.

Its not obvious which one to pick this week though,
chances are you will choose the wrong one.

Redmond on the other hand could well get a brace.

I know its a gamble but I really hate getting it wrong with my big hitters . At least if I fail with redmond I find solace in the fact that many would have chosen the wrong Kubra anyway.

Where's this 'Benteke's had no preseason' thing come from?

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/benteke-liverpool-future-remains-uncertain-11653874

This says he only missed the first three weeks, which means he's been training for a month. He was on the bench for their game against Roma. He might not be match sharp, but surely he's fit?

I guess for some serious 'system' managers (like Poch, Pep or Klopp), a pre-season with another team isn't enough because physical fitness is the least important part of the training. Pardew doesn't strike me as one of those types of managers though.

      1. Cecil The Lion
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

No he doesn't appear to being as sophisticated as those foreign managers but to be fair to him the players at Palace will play to Benteke's strengths anyway so he's a shoe-in for the 'system'.

Yeah, I would expect Pardew to be just smart enough to study what Tim Sherwood did with Tekkers and simply try to replicate that.

Any Townsend owners (me included) should just be patient as they will score...

              Bournemouth (H)
              Middlesbrough (A)
              Stoke (H)

Any changes you would make to this WC team for GW3?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Ivanovich / Valencia / Jagielka / (Collins / Amat)
Hazard / Barkley / Lamela / Redmond (Capoue)
    Aguero / Ibra / Rondon

Ivanovich / Rondon are differentials that could do really well the next few games, based on their stats.
This gives me the flexibility to do Ivanovich/Barkley -> 4.5/9.5 (Thinking Ozil right now)

With the increased likelihood of penalties being awarded for holding in the penalty area (when Martin Atkinson is refereeing), do big centre backs like Shawcross and Huth have more opportunities for assists/goals than their fullback counterparts.

i would argue they are more likely to give away penalties and therefore lose clean sheets

espectially the 2 you refer to.

I think we all know why Skrtel left LFC this season, he would give away 5 pens a game

    3. Cecil The Lion
      • 7 Years

Well Shawcross was involved in two penalties on Saturday so I suppose it works both ways. More chance of cautions as well

      • 8 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

Works both ways, as a city fan I get irritated by Huth having his shirt taken off his back (sometimes literally) when trying to attack corners week after week. But back in our box he is constantly holding back and pulling players from set pieces. Based on him having his shirt pulled most of the way off by Holding this weekend, and getting nothing, I'd guess he's more likely to be giving them away than winning them! I'd imagine it will often come down to a player's reputation and the referee in question.

Oh yeah - just don't take a hit then no point. I'm a city fan but... bench stones. We just can't keep a clean sheet and borough play west brom

Deulofeu might start and then get subbed off for bolasie

I think it will be Deulofeu. Apparently Bolasie was excellent off the bench.

Who to bench for GW 3, one of the following:
    A. Capoue (Up against ARS but could he bag another goal!)
    B. Gray (Away to CHE but maybe get a goal on the break / lucky pen!)
    C. Morgan (Home to SWA so chance of a CS!)

      Capoue

Definitely not gray, I would bench capoue but it's tight between a and c. I think Morgan's goalscoring threat from set pieces probably decides it for me

Thats my worry, has a habit of doing well against the bigger teams in the prem. Tbh its his price and tendency to share points across midfield which is persuading me though....

Look at the Fixtures to come, if Barkley doesn't do well this week, then across the next handful he's more likely to outscore Firmino.

    So bench decisions this week:
A: Bench Gray (1st sub) and play Evans (West Brom) vs MID in a double up with Foster.
B: Play Gray vs Chelsea and bench Evans?

My other 2 subs are Lenihan (Hull) vs MUN and Capoue vs ARS

Play Gray all day long. Would never bench a striker for a defender.

    Any advice please.

    Would you trade (2FT):

    A) Vardy + a) Firmino or b) Eriksen for Ibra + (i) Redmond, (ii) Snodgrass, (iii) Bojan or (iv) any other midtfielder below 6.5 (i.e. Bolaise)

    B) Vardy + a) Firmino or b) Eriksen for Ibra + Barkley + Diomande (-4)
