We dim the lights on Gameweek 10, turning attentions to the rising stock of Manchester City’s mid-price German and the continued promise in the Potteries, while pondering the merits of a change of shape.

The Player

Back-to-back braces against West Brom and Barcelona have sealed the deal for many Fantasy Premier League managers when it comes to Ilkay Gundogan.

The German was already ranked top for transfers in this Gameweek prior to last night’s Champions League display, having served up an 18-point haul against the Baggies on Saturday.

Gundogan went into the Barca clash with the praise of Pep Guardiola ringing in his ears – the City boss reckons
“it is impossible” to achieve his targets without the summer signing on board.

Utilised in a double-pivot role for former club Dortmund, Gundogan bagged just four goals and seven assists in his final two years in the Bundesliga.

Guardiola has a history of reinventing players, though, and a switch to 4-1-4-1 has allowed Gundogan to play with the handbrake off as Fernandinho is instead tasked with patrolling the area in front of City’s back-four.

Despite rising in price overnight, Gundogan’s current cost of 5.6 could still prove exceptional value for money if, as expected, he can cement a starting berth.

In saying that, City’s plethora of attacking options still remains an issue for would-be investors.

With Gundogan initially sidelined through injury, Pep started the season with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva in central midfield and, while the Belgian is versatile enough to be fielded on the flank, it remains to be seen whether Guardiola prefers him orchestrating play in the middle.

Nonetheless, it hasn’t deterred the 202,000+ FPL managers who have splashed the cash on Gundogan since Saturday’s deadline as we seek out that cheaper fourth or fifth midfielder.

With a home clash against Middlesbrough up next, Pep is likely to field his strongest side as City look to go into the international break at the summit.

Another start and convincing performance from the German should see that bandwagon roll on at pace over the upcoming fortnight.

The Team

Three wins on the spin ensure that Stoke City now warrant our attention.

Until this point, our focus has centred on the now-undeniable appeal of Joe Allen as a cheap but hugely productive midfield option.

His Gameweek 10 performance, punctuated by a pair of assists, continued an ascent and has booked him almost 100,000 new owners ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Ham United.

But Stoke’s potential can extend beyond the Welshman.

Wilfried Bony’s brace on Monday night announced his return to consideration.

A provider of 17 goals for Swansea in the 2013/14 campaign, the Ivorian can produce in the top flight if he can be kept fed by the craft of Allen, Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri.

While Allen will again be buzzing around Bony’s muscular presence at the London Stadium, the service provided by Arnautovic will be absent through suspension, with Shaqiri also an injury doubt.

Gameweek 11 returns could be a stretch, then, even with the Hammers missing the influence of Winston Reid at the back.

But, longer term, Bony can be Stoke’s elusive goalscorer to ignite Stoke as an attacking force.

The Potters have played the bottom three sides over their last previous three Gameweeks, urging caution when assessing their current form.

However, with four in six at the bet365 stadium to follow Saturday’s clash, Bony can embark on a run of goals and begin to edge himself into our thinking.

If he can show consistency, we would also see Allen, Arnautovic and Shaqiri flourish further – with their supply translating into assist returns.

The Talking Point

The emergence of Gundogan adds further fuel to the formation debate.

For several seasons we’ve been set on the popular 3-4-3 set-up, a structure that would allow us to adopt the current midfield template, working in tandem with a settle frontline.

Circumstances in this campaign are prompting a rethink.

Gundongan adds to a cast of worthy fifth midfielder options, with the aforementioned Joe Allen joined by the likes of Junior Stanislas, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli all affordable alternatives to a third striker, nudging us towards a 3-5-2.

The forwards have also played their part in this current movement – failing to provide us with reliable mid-price options to rival the almost weekly supply of candidates in midfield.

The tri-force of Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa looks unshakable but, for most, it’s out of reach if we are to concentrate funds on two or three big-hitting midfielders.

While it can often come down to a choice of two of those three forward candidates, filling the third striker spot has proved difficult.

Jermain Defoe is the only sub-8.0 striker to have scored more than four times, with Charlie Austin (four goals) perhaps currently the only other option to warrant the investment.

With the fixtures set to wing in favour of defensive investment at Chelsea and Spurs over the next month, the lure of a shift to five across the middle is growing.

Acquiring a benchwarmer up front – perhaps Hull City’s Will Keane – can make it possible to stock the midfield, sparing funds to pick up some reassuringly expensive options at the back.

As Gundogan flourishes and the procession of candidates from midfield continues, it’s now up to the likes of Defoe, Austin and perhaps Bony to prove they can keep pace to retain our trust in the 3-4-3 setup.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Good afternoon cowboys,I'm mad for a hit this week but I think I should sit still? I've already done Cech to Heaton for funds and other obvious reasons.

    Heaton
    Lovren//Bellerin//Smith
    Lallana//Sanchez//Payet//Mata
    Aguero(C)//Rashford//Wilson(VC)

    Grant//Allen//Holebas//Amat

    1.7 in the bank

    Thank you cowboys

Suspect no hope of Aguero getting rested ahead of internationals so it doesn't really matter who VC is on.

I would be tempted by Wilson (C) since I captained him the week he got a goal/assist but Kun is King.

It really does matter who VC is on... You never know what can happen. Getting your team set for the weekend (Including bench, VC etc etc.) Is usually a lot more important than considering further 4 point hits...

      Allen vs Gundogan debate:

I know everyone will probably consider yesterday's results to be definitive proof that the City mid is the perfect 4th/5th midfielder, but I am not so sure:

Pep's statement that they can't win without him is being misconstrued in my opinion. It does NOT mean that he's going to be playing every game and is above rotation risk - i think it means that having him provides the team with depth which is necessary to battle for 2 trophies. If you look at the goals against Barca, I don't think he was a driver for the goals (unlike KDB), he just pushed forward along with the team and got the final touch.

Regarding Allen, i won't go into the stats as they're covered elsewhere, but I would think having Arnie and Shaq out only makes it having Allen a much juicier prospect. You now have a guaranteed creative hotspot with a proven FPL scorer in Bony up font - the balls/attacking options will pass through him going forward. Additionally, with West Ham horrible at the back and with Reid now suspended - I am going to put money on the fact that Stoke will score/create a LOT more chances this GW

TL;DR: Allen over Gundagon for the next 2 GWs

Would love to know what others think on this - is there anything i am missing?

I agree Allen is more involved in attacks than Gundo, but I'm not convinced Stoke are a free scoring team. They've just played against really poor defenses.

Their next 4 matches are: West Ham (Without Reid), Bournemouth, Watford, Burnley

I think that satisfies the 'defensively weak teams' criteria - for 3/4 atleast

Compare that with City and their attack potential.
West Ham, Watford and Bournemouth can all prove stubborn.

Just made a similar reply below:

City's potential actually dilutes Gundo's chances of being involved in the goals. Stoke might score less, but there's a higher chance of Allen being involved in each of them

I don't think West Ham (this GW) will be able to keep a CS - remember when they didn't have Cresswell at the start of the season?

Gundogan remind me of Lampard the way he trails in to the box behind the play. Especially on the goal last night and his second one on the weekend. Lampard was an FPL monster.

I kind of agree - too soon to tell though. Lampard was a monster.

That is a fair point - but Lampard was never a defensive cover. Also, I think Gundo will get goals, but he will remain the sweeper behind the creative hub of KDB, Sterling, Silva, Nolito and Aguero

I love Gündogan as a player but I'' not sold on him as a consistent FPL option. I think the most goals he's scored in a season previously is 5? He'll surpass that this season but I think the last week has been something of an anomaly. And obviously the risk of rotation is always there with the great options City have.

In short, great for building team value now but I'm not convinced it'll translate into points.

I think the league is a different beast, and you can't do A>B, B>C hence A>C. Plus City play with a very different press/presence in CL.

Also, Barca wasn't exactly at full strength - which was a big factor in their defensive uncertainty in the match

I think its important to remember the teams they play for, City will score much more - giving Gundogan the opportunity to be involved in a lot more goals. Stoke on the other hand could easily go games without goals, which is probably more likely without Arnautovic and Shaqiri.

I would think it's the other way around:

Assuming City get 3 goals in a match: The probability that Gundo is one of them is low when you have Aguero, Sterling, KDB upfront.

Stoke getting 1 goal in a match: I would assume it's Allen/Bony combination (with Arnie and Shaq out)

I think we should also focus on who they play, and playing against a weak defense guarantees both teams score - i just think Allen's involvement seems more sure

An attacking force like city at moment easily outweighs a "what if he's better with no shaq or arnie " for me. I could have probably excelled against the defence allen faced over last 3. I don't think he will have it that easy for a while..but yes it's all ifs and buts.no one knows yet just go with instinct.

Hmm, hadn't checked his away form - might be a factor towards Gundo.

Gundo does, but he looks like the pass before the assist, given his position. Too much talent in front of him to feed Aguero in the final third

        Excellent.

As I posted earlier, I'm worried Gundog is a bit of a red herring. I remember last year Schneiderlin scored in consecutive gameweeks, cue a bandwagon, lots of people proclaiming he had a new position, then his goals promptly drying up as soon as many brought him in.

As Gundogan seems another deep lier who's also had a day in the sun, I'm inclined to watch and wait again.

That said, I'm not doing a Mark and acting refusenik about him: if he does keep it up and morphs into this year's Mahrez, I'll follow along 🙂

I agree that Allen has better short term fixtures. However, my main concern with Allen is once the fixtures stiffen you're left with a 5m stoke midfielder who hasnt scored more than 4 goals in a season for the last 5 years then facing Arsenal, Sot, Lei, L'pool, Chelsea in the run up and over xmas.

Now if he's your 5th mid, no big deal, but if he is a regular playing member of your 11 each week then shifting him out is that much harder even than a player just 0.5m more. By then you will likely have re-invested the cash elsewhere, which would potentially mean multiple transfers just to get rid.

My view to get out of it is simple:

          1. Play him for the next 4 GWS - easy fixtures.

          2. Sell him at his high price point (if he performs in these 4) - for a neat profit.

That way, you get back cheap 5th mid and money for the rest of the team.

Don't think it's worth discounting him because of tough fixtures 1 month or more away.

Deeney to Austin worth a second hit? I think it is long term even if Austin doesn't make up for the -4 this week (which he very well could against Hull). Considering Valencia, Shaqiri + Deeney -> Fuchs, Gundogan + Austin. The alternative is Valencia + Shaqiri -> Fuchs + Redmond but Austin is the standout 3rd striker imo and I don't really fancy a Saints attacking double up.

How much forward planing does everyone do with their FF transfers? Does defence need more planning than attack? Last year I put in a lot of work planing weeks in advance, but it actually tended to take my eye off ball of who to get now. This season, I have started poorly, but I am not really making any plans, I assess my team each week and look for any weaknesses.

Don't plan more than 2 or 3 weeks at a time.
I play the fixtures first, then try and fill the gaps with in form players and a couple of punts.

I tend to plan my defensive transfers around fixture swings. I.e. I've just done Kos->Fuchs who will become Alonso in 4 weeks time

Redmond. But Gündogan is now the favourite on here at that £5m - £6m range.

Austin will start both games. They play Inter at home meaning they're not traveling. So he should be ok.

You wouldn't think all these players were highly paid, exceptionally fit professional athletes on here... Everyone seems to think that they can't play 90 minutes of football a couple times a week...

Cards on the table, I think Gundogan is a silly bandwagon. He's a wonderful player and it's tempting to have a City mid at 5.6 for their upcoming fixtures. Unfortunately, I think his goalscoring is unsustainable almost because of those fixtures.

Against WBA he played further forward with Fernandinho and Fernando both in the starting eleven. And against Barcelona, City pressed unbelievably high putting Gundogan in a much more advanced position against fewer defenders than the formation naturally allowed.

In the easier games coming up, I can't imagine all three of Gundogan, Fernando and Fernandinho playing, putting Gundogan further back in the pivot. As for a high press, yes City will always do that but they are more likely to be doing it having just lost the ball following a sustained period of possession meaning that while Gundogan will sometimes gain possession high up the pitch it's likely there will be more opposition defenders behind the ball than there were against Barcelona.

His style of play thrives on counter-attacking or from being played further forward as against WBA. I simply don't believe he'll get the opportunity to do either in his upcoming fixtures.

Tl;dr Gundogan is probably better against better teams from a fantasy perspective (similar to Fernandinho imo). Actually, from a fantasy perspective just don't bother at all. Great player but getting rid of Sterling or Walcott for him is madness.

I kind of agree. I have no real truck with getting Gundogan if you need a player at that price point. My issue is with downgrading Antonio, Walcott, Sterling et al just because he's had a good week.

I don't consider either one a long term pick. Allen's returns might fizzle out and Gundo could face rotation due to CL and cup ties.

I'm inclined to agree. I have Allen in a 3-5-2 as his fixtures are good for a little while yet but I'll probably downgrade him at some point and move back onto a third striker.

Allen makes so much more sense after watching the game Monday. He is being asked to be the creative force in a somewhat limited Stoke team and is delivering. Gundogan plays in a team that has Aguero, KDB, Silva and Sterling as their attacking force(With some very viable alternatives on the bench) and will be played in the role he is best suited, a defensive midfielder.

This. City have a higher goals ceiling than Stoke but Allen is much more likely to be involved in the goals they do score.

But against a team like Boro and following fixtures, they will have so much possession that he will be around the box anyway as it will be siege-like mentality - almost like Ramsey for Arsenal a few seasons back when in double Pivot.

Yes, that's possible but I think it'll be just that: around the box rather than in it. He may well do a good job in a game like Fanduel but if I had to pick a City goalscorer against Boro he'd be at least 5th on the list.

Or you could always get someone like Fuchs or Alonso and play four at the back. Not trendy, I know, but if you're not that sold on mid options at that price point it could pay dividends.

                A. Arnautovic -> Coutinho
                B. Antonio -> Coutinho

B was the one I had planned but Arnie is banned and my bench is short of quality and starters (Fletcher, Collins, Amat).

But A makes sense given Antonio gives me another decent starter and maybe look ahead to get Allen in GW12 for Antonio.

Given that there's a chance that Collins(STO) would start in place of banned Reid, would it be better to keep Arnautovic(BOU-wat-BUR)?

Lallana -> Gundogan & Sterling -> Hazard for a hit?

                  My current team:
                  Pickford Grant
                  Walker Coleman Smith Holebas Amat
                  Sanchez Sterling Firmino Lallana Allen
                  Aguero Lukaku Deeney

This is probably gonna seem a stupid question but Why has Morgan got a such big TSB difference over Huth as I cant seem to notice too many differences? Is Morgan up for corners more than Huth or something?

Grant owners (or non-owners, like me, contemplating bringing him in for the short term), does Butland's "latest setback" give you optimism that Grant will stay between the sticks for the next 4 GWs?

Gibbs was impressive against Sunderland, he may well have the LB spot for now and could be a great option at 4.9m in a few week if he keeps his place

Hazard or Firminho? Plenty people telling me Firm is better but surely Hazard is a better player and has smashed it since the 3-4-3 move even with tough fixtures. Happy to be told I'm wrong though.

Well I've had to make the choice this gw. Hazard won.

Firminio will get points but I think with added pens and explosiveness hazard wins the race for me. Subjective argument

Gündogan, plays for a better team, has more chance of sustaining it.

209k transfers in for Gündogan since Sat, that's some bandwagon.

Yeah off course, I mean two goals against Barcelona is not quite up to a pair of assists against Swansea.

I own both by the way so it's an unbiased a view as possible.

Agreed. I was fully expecting braces against swansea, Spurs, Southhampton and Everton as well but he didn't deliver. Since he scored 2 against Barca and WBA it is as good a reason as any to jump right on him.

Ive had Benteke and Deeney for the last 3 gameweeks. Did Arnautovic -> Gundogan. Is it worth taking out one of the two for a hit? Who do you reckon? Bony? Dont get the Austin hype tbh

Nolito, Sane and Navas will probably all start at some point during this fixture run. Assuming Fernandinho, kdb and Silva are nailed to start, the likes of gundagon could be rotated along with the 3 wingers I mentioned

                                    Gundogan isnt a winger

I didnt say he was. Its more to do with Silva and Kdb playing centrally to accomodate the wingers, meaning that theres less chance for Gundagon to start?

I guess.. but he has been playing with 3 at the back right? If thats the case then theres room for him aswell

anyone unsure on gundogan and allen? 2 players not known for scoring goals going through a purple patch or are they the real deal?

Allen playing in the 10 role is paying dividends. Time will tell if it's a purple patch but I think he'll continue to score and assist.

                                  G2G ?

                                  Foster
                                  Kos / Stones / Pieters
                                  Sanchez / Sterling / Allen / Firmino
                                  Aguero / Costa / Lukaku

Or thoughts on the transfers below (which would be a -4?)

Sterling + Kos to Hazard + 5m Defender (Morgan or Cedric if fit)

Sterling has a good fixture over the next three, and I'm hesitate to transfer him out, but I think Hazard has the potential to match if not do more over the next three and if he does I maybe priced out of the moves.

Similarly nervous about dropping Kos, but with Bell possible out with the defence be affected and maybe a good time to move on.

                                  Any thoughts much appreciated.
