Less than 48-hours after the end of the previous round of fixtures, the festive schedule serves up a Friday evening “treat” as Gameweek 19 gets underway at the KCOM Staidum.

Hull City’s home form could barely be more encouraging for Everton. The only side yet to chalk up a clean sheet in front of their own supporters, the Tigers also boast the joint-worst home scoring record, netting just nine times in as many matches.

Owned by 5% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Robert Snodgrass is clearly the man most likely to do the damage – the Scot has already served up three double-figure hauls at the KCOM.

Wins against Arsenal and Leicester in the last three have reignited Fantasy interest in Ronald Koeman’s men as the Toffees looks to take advantage of some fine winter fixtures.

With three goals in the last four Gameweeks, Romelu Lukaku has proven a more popular transfer target than Sergio Aguero this week, with over 50,000 FPL managers drafting in the big Belgian ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Koeman moves back to a four-man defence this evening after earning just a fourth clean sheet of the season at Leicester City with a three-man backline. Disappointingly, that sees the 4.0 priced Mason Holgate drop the bench and both Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines reverting to traditional full-back roles.

Lukaku (C) fail, I don't why I take these decisions knowing they will backfire. But the special takeaway is all (C)'s against Hull have failed recently.Kane, Payet, de Bruyne, now Lukaku. They seem to manage to keep the star player quiet.

Good to know - makes sense- thanks; with Barkley's goal Friday they blanketed Lukaku and left Barkley wide open

How's this for a wildcard team?

    Heaton Randolph
    Alonso Rose Brunt Aké Taylor
Sanchez Eriksen Lallana Phillips de Roon
    Benteke Ibra Costa

    Nothing itb.

If you are going to wild card- you have to find a way to go Kun-Costa-Ibra in my opinion; Jones instead of Rose; JRod, or Stanislas or other midprice Mids instead of Eriksen might do it.

    Any suggestions?

I'm thinking Siggy & Costa > Phillips & Aguero (I know the risks)

    Heaton
    Valencia - Cedric - Evans
    Sanchez (C) - Hazard - Eriksen - Siggy
    Ibra - Costa - Origi

    Pickford* - Capoue - Friend - Amat (2FT - 0.0 ITB)

    Cheers.

    Hiya lads, quick question.

If you were to wildcard before next GW, would you go 4-4-2 or 3-5-2?

I can make a decent 3-5-2, and i can make an awesome 4-4-2. It's just i'm not seeing much value in that 'third budget striker' bracket at all, and would much rather have a defender instead.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I would play a 352 but also with a decent option to play 442
That whole 3rd striker thing is too much of a merry go round

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 14 Years

Cheers Ogie. Yeah i've become really tired already of accommodating a 3rd striker slot, it's just not paying well to have one.
Shall try and work out a good 352 which allows a good 442 some weeks if it needs it.

      1. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Not played around enough with a 352 to have a ready made team to hand, but a good 442 i could make could go like this:

        Heaton
Alonso - Rose, VVD - Brunt
        Phillips - Sanchez - Lallana - Hazard
        Aguero - Ibrahimovic
        ______________________________
        Robinson: de Roon, Amat, Grabban

This leaves 0.7 in the bank to do Lallana > Coutinho or Alli as it lacks Spurs players, but then i'd also have no Pool players haha! sacrifices hey 🙂

Bench needs to be totally ignored haha!

You should not totally ignore your bench you never know when you might need them
I would suggest a better 3rd striker i.e. someone that plays and has a chance of scoring like Anichebe or Diomande

          1. Salah’s Sonnet
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

Yeah totally agreed, this is just putting something together really. The key thing is to decide whether to go kun or costa in all of this, inclined to just go costa and be without aguero for good 🙂

    3. Virgil Hilts
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

I think you are right, 3-4-3 is difficult as all 3rd strikers are overpriced for the returns they give.

I'd go 3-5-2 with Anichbe in attack as he his so cheap, nailed and gets a few points.. Pick 2 premium strikers to play every week instead.

This Enables a great 5 man midfield and and 3 premium defenders that act as midfielders; Alonso, Brunt, Rose etc.

Essentially your are play playing 0-8-2, with 3 of your midfielders getting clean sheet points. Juat use fodder like Amat etc for other two defensive slots.

I would also only get 1 decent mid price goalkeeper. Rotating two doesn't work and is a waste of 0.5m or so, especially now Pickford is injured.

      Good luck and have fun!

Thank you very much for this mate, very good insight and detailed feedback, all makes sense to me. I have a bit of clawing back to do on my ML leader to bridge a gap of 70 points or so, but also feel my team needs a refresh even though it is half decent. Sitting at 700k though isn't pretty and not what i'm used to.

Philips to go up in price before Arsenal play based on the transfer rate? If you had exact cash for Kane + Siggy to Kun + Philips, when would you do it? I don't have Sanchez too and so part of me wants to wait for Arsenal to play before deciding on getting him or Kun first.

Costa has a higher ppg than Aguero despite playing more games. Chelsea have a consistently good form while City are struggling to find long term consistency.
On top of that Costa is cheaper in a season where team value and balance is very important.

The choice is easy for me, i don't get the Kun obsession at all. And i'd choose consistently decent points over inconsistent big hauls every day of the year.

Not to mention the tunnel vision many players get caught in feeling that they have to captain Kun almost every week.

i do fully agree with this, and i may even not include aguero on my WC, differential or not.
I've certainly already paid the price this season for having kun and not costa, he's not the aguero of old and Pep seems a bit all over the place at City etc.

Skewed a fair amount by a pair of penalty misses (he missed some in the league right?), the rest after the international break, and that sending off. He 'shouldnt' be missing more penalties, getting rested, or getting sent off for the rest of the season.

      As far as the captaincy goes: 9, 13, 2, 13, 2, -1, 1, 16, 6, 2, 12, -1. There's a few poor ones in there but it's a hell of a lot better than my average captain, that's for sure.

There's definitely good merit to both players. If you can find value elsewhere then you can afford to splash on Aguero's explosiveness.

I would love to see a new rule added that rewards the patient manager. It's not a chip, just a normal rule.

    - if you make 10 or less transfers over a 10GW period you get 2 extra free transfers. This could potentially solve the excessive price changes and provide more variance in tactics.

I like that price changing. Tests you as a manager. I have gone against it. Can reward.

The level playing field is now. I'm not a very hit friendly manager in the second half. You can buy points through patience as well.

Why are brakes needed? The reward for either playing aggressively or patiently (I'm not advocating either strategy) is in the points. You decide what you want to do and gain the rewards.

In which case maybe you should play more aggressively?

Excessive hits already costs points - there's an in built disincentive to be very aggressive.

I don't think it matters. Transfers are already penalized in that a draw is decided on least transfers, and transfers beyond free transfers are penalized by point deductions. A transfer is just as risky as holding onto a player - you dump Lukaku because he's not firing and dropping in value then he gets a brace whilst whoever you've put in gets a yellow card and nothing else. There's always a gamble either way.

You want to penalise managers that take hits and give free transfers to those that don't. I play like Ville Ronka in the 2nd half of the season with late transfers but see theadvantage of making earlier ones in the 1st half of the season and the risks involved.

Most FPL winners and others who have finished in the top ten have been patient players, taking very few hits and coming out on top despite having lower TVs than many of us.

But even Jonty finds it boring to play that way, even though patience and playing the Ville Ronka way has proved to be pretty successful for him apart from this season.

I'm not so sure about that, I have no stats but my good quality mini leagues are filled with patient players flying high. Aggressive players get found out eventually in low scoring weeks when their -12s hurt them.

      Strongly disagree.

It's a style of management, being patient. You wait for team news, protect yourself against any potential injuries in midweek games, also taking some time to think about your moves. Each style of play has its pros and cons. Can't reward a type of management over the other, rather folk should look to balance it out and go out of their way to adapt to the external factors of the game

I'd argue there is more advantage in being aggressive due to having more form players and price rises costing only 4pts.

Bit boring if we all play the same way, that's the real snooze fest. Better that there is more tactical variance with equal rewards

I would suggest a -6 for every hit made. This season has seen so many double digit hauls every week and players are not hesistant to loose -4 or -8 for the next.

A -6 will put a brake on volatile price changes among the defenders and may be even the forwards.

I am not of the opinion that aggressive style of play is unskilled. But the way the game is set up, its forcing everyone to be aggressive, especially this season. Balance is what we need.

If you think that playing aggressively is the secret to success, why not play like that? I've tried playing more aggressively this year - it's been a total disaster. I'm switching back to a more patient approach from today. I think the game is beautifully balanced - you can play whatever way you want, there are costs and risks associated with each style.

The game is unbalanced in favour of an aggressive approach. I think the game will benefit from more tactical diversity. It's boring if we all play the same way and do the same things

I agree that this season suits the more aggressive player.

Some patience managers are suffering as they do not seem to have the ability to change style, or believe that ultimately their passive styles will win through. Or some do try and change their style, and fail miserably as it is unnatural.

Every season is different and as an FPL manager, we have to discover what the secrets are as we play.

However, perhaps the simple answer would be to increase the thresholds to which the price changes occur. I am sure FPL towers will review the seasons transfer activity and price changes and make the necessary tweaks next season. In my view giving extra FTs, as per the original suggestion from Ryan, is a bit gimmicky. However, I thought the same about the 3 additional chips too.

This is just getting ridiculous now. The whole idea of being a manager is that you play with your unique style.
Klopp is so different to Pulis and I'm glad they are, both do it their way and get fulfilment in their own style.
A good manager needs to accept diversity, you too Ryan may have to as well

Depends on what kind of game we want it to be. Should patience be rewarded? Or should aggressive risk taking be rewarded? Or something else? I think the current system works well, there are examples of successful patient and aggressive styles. -6 would be huge and I doubt anyone could get to the top by consistently taking them. -5 could be good, an extra incentive to hold.

The 4 point hit is just fine. Equals a goal for a forward, clean sheet for a defender, proper trade-off for a mid between goal & assist points.

The only problem in the game is the guessing game as far as the price changes are concerned. Why is it hidden if a player X is going to go up in price? It clearly affects transfer plans. The have data that says gives out transfers out and transfers in information, so, I don't really see why they can't have a live price change tracker. If I have all week to make a transfer, why should I be priced out of a move later in the week without me knowing?

Supply and demand. If they had a tracker on the site, you'd just see more people transfer the player in during the last day before the price change than currently. Price changes are kept secret hence the price prediction sites still being incorrect.

That would result in faster price changes and everyone getting the same template players who just scored points. Some secrecy helps but the secret is largely out now due to price change sites and more obsessive managers

          TOTALLY AGREE with this
Most sensible suggestion (though rounding may be an issue with odd point scores)

Judgement on your starting 11 should be rewarded and also those dormant teams or people who leave their team for a few weeks would be punished slightly

No, -4 is right in my book.
Your giving away your first goal (striker),your clean sheet and you could argue an assist.
I think it's a fair price to pay.

The limit to 1 free transfer per GW is already constricting enough - in real-life football, managers pick their whole squads game by game. Increasing the penalty and decreasing my options would make the game *less* interesting for me. I wouldn't mind reducing the penalty to -3, as in Fox Sports's EPL Fantasy.

I'd prefer to do away with wildcards.

        (controversial)

Instead, replace with them with a "transfer bank".

It gets loaded with 38 free transfers at the start of the season, one for each GW...same number as you'd get anyway at the current rate of 1 FT per week.

No more FT added each week.

You're free to use them as you see fit...whole new strategy element.

Could blow them all in the first week or two, then suffer pain

Could use them as now, do 1-2 transfers per week..eek them out.

Could split them into 4-5 mini wildcards.

        Possibilities are endless.

The freedom and new strategy elements would reward people who plan and manage and forward think...penalise the rash, knee-jerkers and impulse buyers.

If your transfer bank runs empty, you pay for each extra transfer...call it a "transfer overdraft" to continue the parlance...this could be made more prohibitive, 5-6 pts as TM suggests.

        Alternative...

To simulate what we have now in terms of wildcards, the transfer bank gets loaded with 19 at the start of the season...then there's a 2nd "deposit" of 19 FTs in Jan for the 2nd half of the season.

        REASONING

I take hits...way more than I'd like. However they all tend to be front-loaded in the first half of the season.

In the 2nd half of the season, the team is built, the die is cast, there's only minor tinkering required in general...things calm down A LOT

Transfers struggle to be used later on, they become less valuable the nearer to the end of the season you get. A transfer in September is WAY more valuable than a transfer in April.

Looks like a lot of managers are ripping their teams apart to accommodate Kun Aguero. Lots of value in the midfield this season!

Yuk. Locked in for two points a game. May as well play a defender for a clean sheet over him. Not much backup if the big men don't fire up.

Worth considering that. I like his stats and i think Sunderland are about to turn the corner.

I am going with the first 4 + Firmino (maybe to Coutinho). What does your defence look like? And midfield?

      Jones (whu)
      Zaha (SWA)
      Friend(LEI)

Zaha the obvious choice? but chances of united getting a CS also high ?
