The return of Philippe Coutinho is the only positive for Liverpool on a night when Southampton’s EFL Cup profligacy might well come back to haunt them.

Southampton 1 Liverpool 0

Nathan Redmond (5.8) made the difference but could have made so much more, as Southampton failed to put away a listless Liverpool at St Mary’s in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

The visitors managed only two shots on target from 68% of the possession, while Redmond alone had five goal scoring chances to make the second leg at Anfield considerably more comfortable than it is likely to be now.

The midfielder did at least convert one of those opportunities, finishing smartly from a Jay Rodriguez (6.3) pass, and was perhaps unlucky to see a late effort hit the bar.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a major consolation prize to soften the blow of defeat as Philippe Coutinho (8.2) returned after a month and a half out injured. The Brazilian was given a 30-minute cameo and immediately rejuvenated a Reds attack in which Roberto Firmino (8.5) and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) were toothless.

Firmino has struggled hugely during his compatriot’s absence, scoring just once, losing close to a quarter of a million Fantasy managers and dropping 0.3 in value. The 11.6% who have stood by him will now hope for a return to the form – and “false 9 role” – that harvested five goals and as many assists in the first 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Coutinho is still found in 14.7% of Fantasy squads, but he may well be eased back into action just as Liverpool face a mixed bag of upcoming fixtures, with tough matches against Man United, Chelsea and Spurs tempered by a trip to Hull City and the visit of Swansea City.

The Reds also have an FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle to resolve on January 18.

Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his weekend side, Claude Puel seven to his, with only Maya Yoshida (4.2), Virgil van Dijk (5.8), Ryan Bertrand (5.4) and Dusan Tadic (7.0) remaining from the Saints team that drew with Norwich.

Yoshida has now started the last four matches across all competitions and, with club skipper Jose Fonte (5.4) looking for an exit over the January transfer window, the Japan international could be one to consider over a relatively attractive run that involves trips to Burnley, Swansea and Sunderland and home matches with Leicester and West Ham.

However, Puel will surely be prioritising a replacement for Fonte should the defender be allowed to leave the club.

Elsewhere, continued rotation looks inevitable in the Saints’ squad as the fixtures continue to pile up. As well as their league commitments, they will have to replay against Norwich City on Wednesday (January 18) before the second leg of their Liverpool tie a week later and a potential FA Cup fourth round tie just three days after that.

For now, though, last night’s result gives them a slight advantage as they look to book a place at Wembley.

Clearly, the outcome of that second leg at Anfield will have major repercussions for FPL managers.

Should the Saints prevail and clinch a place in the final, their Gameweek 26 clash against Arsenal would need rescheduling and would almost certainly be moved to another Gameweek – something to consider for the 36.5% of FPL managers currently holding Alexis Sanchez (£11.9m).

If Liverpool can overcome that deficit, though, their Gameweek 26 trip to Leicester City would require rescheduling instead.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie (Hojbjerg 73), Romeu, Davis (Ward-Prowse 82), Tadic, Redmond, Rodriguez (Long 82).
Subs not used: Lewis, Stephens, McQueen, Sims.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner, Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum (Coutinho 61), Lallana, Firmino (Origi 83), Sturridge.
Subs not used: Mignolet, Gomez, Moreno, Stewart, Woodburn.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

With Mane on AFCON duty and Liverpool having mixed fixtures over January is it time to ignore Klopp's troops for the time being?

Or can they find their scoring mojo again, with Coutinho back from injury?

Pool fan here and I think its an ignore for now as Pool (for some reason) look fatigued and out of ideas. Firmino looks a shell of his former self and I would give Cout a couple of weeks to get sharp before thinking about bringing him in.

Very much agree with this. I think Pool are hitting a slump now and until Couts and Hendo is 100% again I would stay away for the tile being

Not if last night was anything to go by....Coutinho nearly smashed it out of the stadium a couple of times and had Austin been playing it could easily been three or four conceeded. I think Lallana is worth keeping though. He looked good again.

I doubt many on here have Liverpool players (apart from maybe Lovren) at the moment anyway...

Mane - been sold as he's at ACON
      Coutinho - been injured
Firmino - not done much for ages
Origi - been rotated too much

I can see people jumping onto Coutinho the minute he gets points though

Their fixtures are the very definition of hit and miss. The caveat is that they have a good record in big games so I would hold lallana if you have him and monitor Coutinho and Firmino

Definitely would be interested in getting Coutinho or one of his buddies for the Swansea game. They have looked a bit jaded but hopefully Phil will spark them into life again. Don't think the fixtures are that bad, the games against the big teams are at home

Mane will definitely be a big miss, but I think Liverpool will do just fine during the tough fixtures. Earlier in the season, they thrived in some of those big games so I would completely understand if someone wanted to keep his Liverpool player. Nevertheless, there are probably better options.

      I'm ignoring Pool for now.

Will get one of Mane, Firm or Cout when Mane is back from AFCON.

Mane adds a different dynamic to the Pool attack which they will miss.

    10. MTPockets

Keeping Lallana and/or 'upgrading' to Coutinho.
Mane out/Coutinho back may increase returns for remaining mids, not reduce them.

      • AA33
          9 years, 7 days ago

Absence of Mane has obviously affected Liverpool. But still they are the top scoring team and have plenty of other great players. They have alternate easy and tough fixtures, and the easy ones are very easy ( Swansea, Hull, Leicester, Burnley etc.).So I wouldn't completely ignore them, especially Lallana who at 7.5 (still) is a great value.

Volume of fixtures is a concern as well as the opponents they're facing.

having got Lallana for 7.0 I will be holding, they still play Swansea and hull in their next 4!

As a LIV fan myself, I don't have any LIV cover since the 5 last GWs. Kept Firmino after Couts injury but quickly realised he won't be anywhere near expectation.. Emre can be a nice 5th MID though, while Lallana looked lost and couldn't count his feet yesterday!

And after my depression watching us play last night, I can say that if LIV manage to hold on the 2nd spot until end of January, only then they'll have any chance of anything in the PL.
But I can see us losing this week end.

Just seen Jakupovic started both the FA & League Cup matches for Hull. Worth chancing him (home to Bourne) this week over Foster (away to Spurs)?

Start him because if he doesn't play its not likely he'll come on as a sub. So if he doesn't play Foster will come in anyways

Ya that's my thinking too. Both Jaku and Foster have good potential for save points but home to Bourne over away to Spurs surely swings it.

The fact that Marshall was starting ahead of Jaku shows how inept Phelan was. Got off to a strong start with Jaku in goal and then drops him. Contrast that with Pickford at Sunderland.

Defence is an absolute shambles, what do I do with this sorry lot?

              Alonso, Ake, Barragan, Cedric, Amat

Thinking Ake to Walker. Would be for a hit but he's a good long term option and could be repaid this week.

There have been accusations of attitude problems for most of his career if I remember rightly, not entirely surprising then.

Chuffed with this as a West Ham fan, it's been clear to see all season. Build a team now and let Lanzini show what he's about. Loved him last season Payet but completely see his reasons for wanting to leave.

                      Perhaps consider alternative Chelsea def?
A cheapo 5th def releases funds for elsewhere..
Don't think KDB worth the £.
                      Not a fan of Jrod/DeRoon 4th/5th.
                      Giroud a gamble imo.

Currently on Fraser with caroll as 1st sub.

You probably have it spot on there.

West Ham are pretty bad right now and doesn't look like Payet will play again so bad news for Carroll

I have an almost identical problem with Anichebe and Capoue. Stanislas looks good for 5th playing mid for the next three games. I'd also look to upgrade Anichebe by downgrading Haz after the Hull game.

They say this every year. We always survive. You're just as likely to go down at this stage as we are. You're just a horrible club, with horrible fans. No offence.

Please provide some basis as to why we're a horrible club and have horrible fans, from your experience?

Do we have to many people in our stadium for your liking? Even our 60k capacity stadium that we (supposedly) fill, looks more full than the stadium of light (Which is ironic, it's dark and horrible).

Well, if you have some reason to despise West Ham, sure - but you have to wonder what's going on for a footballer not wanting to play for his club.

I think it's quite simple, in the summer he was promised a team built around him with a world-class striker, Zaza was the best we could do and Ayew who we've played on the wing.

The whole team hasn't performed like it has last season and Payet's become evidently frustrated. Annoyingly he gave up a bit too quickly and given his performance' last season and the teams that were knocking on the door during the summer you can see why he wants out.

He's only been at the club 18 months, so doesn't really owe that much to us either. The board haven't come out and slated him and it's been quite simple. Bilic has come out and said that Payet wants out, Payet has only dropped a couple of hints to French media and not openly said he want's to leave West Ham, done it professionally and the manager has announced it. Probably the only thing that West Ham have done right all season.

If he goes to another Prem team he could be fantasy gold. The amount of chances he creates, Imagine what he could do if he actually wanted to play for his team as well.

Payet will probably go to Arsenal and this will totally change the dynamics.

I really can't see Wenger wanting him, the reason he didn't go in the past was because of attitude/consistency problems.

Payet is best played LW (supposedly), Sanchez would shift up top or be going to another club himself I reckon.

Going by that logic, clubs should allow players to go for free instead of extending their contract at the last year just so that they will fetch a higher price when sold.
Signing a contract means nothing, humans get unhappy due to tons of reasons within a club, personality factors etc..
It's just a job for him and he doesn't like it.

Payet was a late bloomer in terms of fulfilling his potential (a lot of that down to his application and poor attitude), had really underachieved until he went to west ham , now he he's a star and a french international .they don't deserve this.

Any WHU asset to benefit from Payet's sulliness?

                        Lanzini? Antonio?

Lanzini for sure. Antonio will continue as he was but Lanzini will be our main creative player now.

                          Has to be Lanzini
Personally he should be licking his lips to take the mantle and get into the spotlight as a savior . Has the leadership too, pops up with important goals.

Been missing for a week or so, just gone to check my team.... what have I missed with Ake? Has he gone back from to chelsea from his loan spell with bou?
Surely he won't play for them?
