Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 35

Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho both limp out of action to send the Fantasy Premier League transfer market into overdrive ahead of back-to-back double Gameweeks.

Here’s our usual post-Gameweek round-up of the latest batch of injury concerns with just three rounds of fixtures remaining in 2016/17.

Sergio Aguero, Claudio Bravo

Man City’s injury problems at both ends of the pitch have played a major part in the plans of FPL managers over the last few days.

After bagging a goal and assist in the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough, Sergio Aguero was replaced late on due to a groin problem.

Owned by 22% of FPL managers, the forward – who has scored in six of his last seven league outings – is now set for scans in the next 24 hours, amid fears he could miss the remainder of the season.

With concerns over Aguero escalating, FPL managers have turned to his team-mate Gabriel Jesus in their droves – he’s the number one transfer target, with over 71,000 drafting him in since the weekend.

The Brazilian returned to the starting XI for the first time since being forced off with a foot injury back in Gameweek 25 and was also in the goals, taking his tally to four strikes in as many Premier League starts.

City’s remaining matches – a home clash with Palace in Gameweek 35 and a final-day trip to Watford on either side of Double Gameweek 37 Etihad encounters with Leicester and West Brom – provide obvious allure.

Yet according to his manager, the winter signing was somewhat fortuitous to play from start to finish against ‘Boro after returning from injury with a five-minute sub appearance in the previous Gameweek:

“I am pleased for him, but he needs time. He’s had three months out and has only had four training sessions. Ideally, I wanted him to have 60 minutes, but what happened in the first half changed that but he is young and coped”.

Jesus also conceded that his match sharpness is not quite up to scratch yet:

“After being out for three months, I am tired. In my case I am still not 100 per cent fit so I missed so many chances and I am sad for that.”

Meanwhile, City’s run of two clean sheets in the last three Gameweeks have persuaded many to flock to Willy Caballero as a cut-price pick between the sticks.

With Claudio Bravo ruled out for the season due to a calf complaint, the 4.7-priced Argentine is second only to Arsenal’s Petr Cech for transfers-in among goalkeepers – over 16,000 have acquired him since the weekend.

Philippe Coutinho

The Liverpool midfielder lasted just 12 minutes of last night’s win at Watford before limping off at Vicarage Road.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp rolled out an optimistic post-match update:

“He has a dead leg, hopefully it’s not too serious but of course it’s really painful and no chance (he could continue). Everybody could see he tried hard, but no chance.”

Coutinho also took to Instagram to play down fears:

“Thanks to all for the support. It isn’t serious.”

Having scored in four of his previous five outings, Coutinho was named among the top ten captaincy candidates for Gameweek 35, with over 122,000 handing him the armband.

His early withdrawal has had a significant impact on the FPL transfer market – over 50,000 have parted company in the last 24 hours alone as the Merseysiders prepare for a home clash against Southampton.

With just three matches remaining for Klopp’s side, many are now bailing on their midfielders and turning to the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard, who offer five and four fixtures respectively over the same period.

Indeed, Roberto Firmino is also placed in the top four midfielders for transfers out in the Gameweek as our Wildcard plans begin to take shape.

Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw

Man United’s problems in defence show little sign of abating after two of their back four were forced off during Sunday’s home draw against Swansea City.

Eric Bailly lasted 60 minutes and 13 seconds to be precise, thus earning a clean sheet as he limped out of action with the score 1-0 to the home side. Yet after the match, Jose Mourinho was uncertain whether fatigue has played a part:

“Eric, maybe he is injured but, at the same time, maybe it’s in relation to him being the guy who’s played 800 minutes of football in April. Maybe he has also a relation to that.”

With Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo all sidelined, Bailly has been a rock at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence, starting ten of the last 11 and serving up eight clean sheets over that run.

Yet with back-to-back trips to Arsenal and Spurs (which is the first match of their Double Gameweek 37) up next, our faith in the United defence is on a downturn as they also have one eye on the upcoming Europa League semi-final clash with Celta Vigo.

Bailly is the fourth most-traded defender since the weekend deadline passed, with over 18,000 transfers out. Meanwhile, Antonio Valencia – who was named on the bench for the fourth time in six league matches – has earned more sales than any defender since Saturday’s deadline passed.

Luke Shaw, meanwhile, could now be out for the season after scans confirmed he sustained ligament damage to his left foot early on against the Swans. Reports from earlier today indicate that the left-back is set to see a specialist to ascertain the extent of the damage.

David Luiz

The Chelsea centre-half was replaced by Nathan Ake with just eight minutes remaining of the weekend win at Everton after picking up a knock.

Certainly, the signs look promising for Luiz to return in time for Monday’s home encounter against Middlesbrough.

The Brazilian played down the injury on social media, while manager Antonio Conte was also optimistic, going on to suggest he is keen for his regulars to play through the pain barrier in their bid to secure the title:

“I didn’t speak with the doctor about his (Luiz’s) injury but I don’t think it is a serious injury for him. I hope in the next game that David Luiz is available to play. Also now in this part of the season it is important sometimes to try to play if you are not 100 per cent with your condition. He is showing us great commitment in this season. Don’t forget his injury in the knee after the game against City – but I am very pleased for the impact of Ake in (the Everton) game”.

The remaining fixtures (MID, wba & WAT, MID) could hardly be more encouraging for the Blues, who earned a first clean sheet in 12 attempts with their 3-0 victory over the Toffees.

While Marcos Alonso – whose 5.5 points per match is better than any FPL defender – remains our go-to option in the Blues’ defence, Luiz’s injury is clearly worth monitoring in light of Conte’s words on Ake.

Priced at a mere 3.8 in FPL, Ake could yet play a part in some Wildcard plans if the Brazilian fails to recover in time for Monday’s match and beyond.

Benik Afobe

The Bournemouth frontman was replaced by Junior Stanislas just before the hour-mark against Sunderland after sustaining a hamstring problem.

In a post-match radio interview, Cherries boss Eddie Howe admitted that Afobe – who produced three goals and as many assists in seven outings prior to the weekend – was likely to be sidelined for two weeks with the problem.

Bearing in mind that Bournemouth host Stoke City and Burnley over that period, Josh King’s owners will be optimistic over further returns for the run-in.

Second only to Alexis Sanchez for transfers-in among FPL midfielders since the weekend, the Norwegian international has netted nine times in his last ten outings and looks set to move from a central support role to lone striker for that pair of Vitality encounters.

The Rest…

Slaven Bilic remains optimistic that Andy Carroll could return to the West Ham squad for Friday’s home clash against Spurs, though he admitted the striker won’t be available for a 90-minute appearance.

Hammers left-back Arthur Masuaku also expects to be available after playing down the knock that forced him off against Stoke last Saturday.

Everton were without winter signing Morgan Schneiderlin in Sunday’s home loss to Chelsea – the Frenchman was sidelined with a thigh injury that manager Ronald Koeman reckons “will not take longer than ten days” to recover from.

Burnley’s Stephen Ward was forced off at the break during the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace. The right-back was doubtful for the encounter due to a knee problem, though manager Sean Dyche went on to say “I don’t think and we hope it’s not too serious” ahead of this week’s home clash with West Brom.

The Eagles’ Yohan Cabaye also missed the Selhurst Park match with a knock.

Handed pitch time off the bench in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, Swansea’s Jefferson Montero lasted just six minutes before being forced off with a recurrence of an ongoing hamstring problem.

Watford’s Jose Holebas was unavailable to face Liverpool last night due to a foot injury, while Miguel Britos lasted less than 20 minutes before being replaced. With problems at the back mounting, Adrian Mariappa (4.0) has started three of the last four Gameweeks.

Leicester City captain Wes Morgan failed a late fitness test for the 1-0 win at West Brom. The Jamaican international recently returned to action in the Champions League only to pick up a hamstring problem for the run-in. Although his availability remains in question, Morgan – priced at 4.6 – could come into Wildcard consideration if he can return in time for home matches against Watford and Bournemouth either side of Double Gameweek 37.

Very torn on this one, opinions very appreciated

    A) Jesus and JWP (I believe he will be nailed again after their 0-0 vs Hull)

    B) Gabbi and Sane

I'm on WC. I'm leaning towards playing it safe with B and if I need to I can take a -4 before my GW37 bench boost to bring Jesus in for Gabbi (and drop whoever is looking like the worst option for a -4 to fund it).

    Opinions?

Am I crazy to consider dropping Kane on my WC for Jesus and using the funds to upgrade elsewhere? Hear me out..

I have the lead in my ML, rivals have used WC and don't own Kane. They won't bring him in because they want differentials. They own Costa and Gabbi and will most likely bring Jesus in (I don't currently own). So if I bring Jesus in for Kane I'm blocking their differential whilst upgrading elsewhere.

    Solid plan?

Thought I would just make this post for any that are in my situation with no WC and are enviously looking around at all these flashy template teams knocking about.

The question is: If you have no WC in your pocket - what are your plans? Have you prepared well for the impending DGWs? How many DGWers will you have this week and next?

I currently have 2x Southampton (Tadic, Gabbi) and 0x Arsenal for this week (may get in Ozil).
For GW 37, I have 9/15 DGWers so have prepared reasonably well. Aiming for 12, so a few hits needed.

I was looking forward to discussing some transfer plans on tonight's Scoutcast, but I am unfortunately out for the evening 🙁

TM, I assume you have SOU defenders in your team. Would you play them against LIV and ARS? I have 2 SOU defenders + Gabriel and I am not sure if I should choose them ahead of Alonso? Also tempted to play AOA and play 5 mids instead of benching Sane. What say?

Having a miserable season but used my WC to repair after GW 28 and have no regrets. Finally made progress after struggling to gain traction all season, and my team is similar to many WCs now. Looking like this for this weekend:

      Pick, Cab
      Alonso, Valencia, Davies, Yoshi, Fabio
      Sanch, Haz, Alli, King, JWP
      Kane, Jesus, Rashford

Not terrible.. probably take a hit or two for 37 and have 14 DGWers.

      Forster
      Toby Kompany Robertson
      Alli Sanchez Hazard King Firmino
      Kane Jesus

      Hennessey Stephens Mee Anichebe

      For 37: Mee & Firmino -> Koscielny & Pedro/Fabregas -4

Ok, I guess but 12 points is 12 points.

For GW37, have 11/15 right now. Have pretty much no money ITB, so will get 12 at the max or just stick with 11. Not planning to go too crazy with hits.

Nice idea for a discussion. Am happy to do -8, -8 to maximize both GWs, but Gabbiadini and Southampton in general are the biggest puzzle for me to solve.

I have triple Southampton but can't remember a time I've been less confident in a team - that first half was awful and very unimpressive considering their opposition's woeful form. If all it takes to dismantle Southampton is a team with something to play for, will liv/ARS/mid/MUN give them any opportunity to find a reason to exist?

as uninspired as I am by Soton's defenders, I have had Yoshi stuck on the bench for his last two hauls and once Bailly got a knock, I really thought Stephens might as well come in instead

I am playing both Yoshi and Stephens (together with Cech/Monreal) as opposed to Kompany / Heaton

Don't expect much, if any, better from Cech than Heaton but have lost any faith on Man C defending

Yeah, Yoshida and Stephens both seem like no brainers to me as well, especially if you have a BB for 37. Am much less convinced of their attacking options, of which I have two.

Their attackers never came into my thinking ... most of my money's in the front 8, so defence was always going to be cheap ... couldn't turn down two really cheap defenders, playing 90 minutes and with dgw

all long term planning and lots of hits ... have made big on the double game weeks and avoided dead wood
have maintained an upward OR and now well set for the last few matches

Not having to worry about BB has been a godsend as I have no reason to waste money on the bench

All transfers for the last couple of months have been prejudiced on the number of extra games players will play - no extra games and they get sold, not bought

One final hit this week which wasn't as bad as I thought, originally -12 but now -16 as I decided Bailly is dead and Stephens a better option ... together with his 1.3M

Now have 5 dgw players this week and all 11 next week (no BB) - TC to use wk 37

could be ... Cech was busy vs Spurs and I think Man U days are done (You've had the juice from DDG)

Courtois is a lot more (would be better as a Chelsea defender) ... he is not going to get any save points, or BAPS, so it will be 6 or 2 points

There's only really one player that I feel like I need and that's Hazard, but would have to sacrifice Sanchez, Alli or Eriksen for him or do some major surgery. Only have Yoshi and Sanchez for 36, and then 10 dgwers + King for 37 with no chips remaining.

Took a -12 this week for Kos, Cech, Hazard and Jesus.
I have Cech, Kos, Sanchez, Bertrand, Gabbi and Stephens (1st bench) this week.
Plan to take a -4 next week to BB with 14 DGW players and King.
Barring mishaps this week I plan to have...

      Cech, Cabellero
      Alonso, Cahill, Kos, Stephens, Yoshida
Hazard (C), Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, King
      Jesus, Gabbi & Rashford

Used WC weeks ago and maintained run of greens until last week's disaster.

This week already sold Lukaku, Siggy & Zaha for Jesus, Hazard & King (-8) as had exact funds. Gives me 11 DGWers with Hennessy, Holgate, King and Benteke only singles. Fairly ok with that given their fixtures.

Not sure what to do yet. Any suggestions welcome:

      Pickford/Jaku
      Alonso/Valencia/Jags (Barragan/PVA)
      Alli/Son/Coutinho/Zaha
      Lukaku/Kun/Kane

      Kun > Jesus
      Lukaku > Gabbi
      Cout > Hazard
      Zaha > Sanchez

      That's for a -8

Then Son to Sané for GW37 and may either double up on chelsea defence or get Kompany in for Valencia.

      Sound good?

Shame was looking forward to a non WC view on the Scoutcast tonight.

Don't see what all the fuss is about myself. WC a good few weeks back. Went up over 100k places OR. More or less got the same teams as people are posting.

X3 Soto x2 Arsenal ready for this week. X10 DGW players in place (don't want 15 anyway).

I originally planned to wildcard in GW35 or 36.
But I reassessed the situation following Ibrahimovic's injury and decided it would be better to bring it forward to GW34.
The biggest mistake on my wildcard was to replace King with Son - which also meant that I could not afford to upgrade Hennessey to de Gea.
After taking a 4 point hit this week to rectify this mistake, I will be left with 6 DGW players for GW36 and 13 for GW37.
I may or may not increase this to 14 players with my GW37 free transfer.

I just have Gabbiadini in place for gw36 atm but will likely be getting in Sanchez and an arsenal defender (-4). For GW37 I'd then have 8 DGW players in place but that would include Valencia and Bavies. Will probably take a couple of hits to get up to 10. I've already used BB so no point having any more

Hey mate, I have 1 Saint and 1 Arsenal (Yoshi, San(c)hez) and it's staying that way. Did Jesus + King in for Tekkers + Zaha. Might take a -8 to replace Bailly if he's definitely out, my other options for the 3rd defender slot being Barragan or Stones ugh. Huth punt!?

WC'ed 3 weeks ago, got a decent team now that I couldn't have afforded now, a good 1m extra at least gained in last 3 weeks. Taken a 12pt hit to get in Arsenal players (2 DGW's each hit, so plenty of chance to recover the loss) and Jesus this week. Now have 2 ManCity players, so will decide next week what to use my FT on depending on inevitable injuries and rotation. Will probably take more hits

Had a terrible season, worst for many years and down at 450k ish so realyl don't care anymore and going bat hit crazy.

I done it early to fix my team after City Stoke surprise double with a careful plan to cover all bases through until the end and has generally went ok. Took a -4 today (first hit since WC) to swap out Lukaku and Fabio for Jesus and Monreal and plan on Zaha to Sane next week giving me 15 potential doublers although a lot are rotation doubts.

      De Gea Pickford

      Valencia Walker Alonso Monreal Yoshida

      Sanchez Alli Pedro Zaha Ward-Prowse

      Kane Jesus Gabbiadini

      Just outside top 6k.

Already have Pickford otherwise yep, great option. Think I might take a hit to downgrade Stones and get Caballero in.

          Pickford Valdes
          Stones Valencia Vertonghen Yoshida Stephens
          Hazard Sanchez Alli Fabregas Walcott
          Kane Jesus Gabbiadini

I've somehow maintained the 14k I was back in 23 so I'm hoping there's a chance to break into the top 10k by the end.

I used WC way back. I have 4x DGW for this week, but will be doing Jaku > Cech -4 probably. With a -4 next week I will downgrade to Holgate (or a 4.3m DGW player if price changes allow it) giving me 12 or 13 DGW players, 15 starters.

      GW36: Jaku > Cech
GW37: Baines, Benteke > Jesus, Holgate

      Giving, for BB37:
      Cech, Willy
      Alonso, Vertonghen, Stephens, Yoshida, Holgate
      Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, TCarroll
      Kane, Jesus, Gabbi

Despite taking a -12 hit last week (-8 for Rojo and Ibra before their injuries) I feel like I have prepared pretty well.

I wild carded about 6-7 game weeks ago. I had so many players not playing that I had to. I now have 3 DGW for this week and 10 for GW 37. I can use a free transfer to get 11 DGW for GW 37 without a hit. My SGW players would be Zaha, Fernandez, Jaku, and Hennessey who all have favorable fixtures. My problem is that I have Sanchez but am without Hazard and King. And that bothers me a lot. Several weeks ago my plan was to TC Sanchez. Now I am not sure I even want to captain him, much less triple captain him. I had thought about using the bench boost this week to offset hit points to build a better team for GW 37 with Hazard as TC. More likely, I will use my triple captain GW 38.

Wildcarded in 29, but not in terrible shape! Did Gibson + Zaha to Gabriel + King this week. I think King, although without doubles looks essential.
Will have 3 dgw players this week (Sanchez, Gabriel & Yoshida).
Have Hazard, Alonso and triple Spurs for the run in so content with that.
Currently on 10 dgw37 players but might take a -8 next week to rid myself of three of the following: Hennessey, Gestede, Benteke, Valencia. Prob get in Jesus and a dgw goalkeeper. Could be in worse shape I guess but work cut out to hold a top 10k or.

      Used WC in 31
Took a -8 last week to bring in Jesus Alonso and King!
-4 this week to bring in Hazard and Gabriel

Currently have Gab Yoshida JWP Sanchez for 36 and 11 with doubles in 37. Will most likely keep Benteke as a SGW player and get Cabellero in for Valdes for 12. WOuld defo consider a hit to get a DGWer for Chambers too, depends on money, might have to be Stephens

So for another -4 I can have

      Pickford Willy
      Alonso Verts Gabriel Yoshida ???

      Kane Jesus Benteke

      Lukaku, Kane,

If Aguero is injured for a long time - swap for Jesus.

If Aguero is not injured for a long time - Single GW player out for DGW37 player (either Zaha or Chambers out, I reckon)

Only 1FT this round, but I got Cech, Alexis, Welbeck, JWP, Cedric and Yoshida, so I think I'm covered.

Good shout Az, have a little bit of wc envy but am well set up.

Wildcarded back in 30 but with an eye on the doubles, and no chips left, but taking minimal hits. Few people in my ML have wildcards but many have bench boost so I'm hoping they will all be taking more hits than me!

Sanchez and Stephens for GW36, not too worried about anyone else, and won't be taking hits to bring in gambles.

Currently have 9 dgwers + Lukaku and King. Will likely use a hit prior to GW37 to upgrade Zaha to a decent double playing mid and then bench King and play Lukaku v Watford. Will do a straight Sanchez-Hazard swap after GW36 unless he explodes.

Banking on the likes of Lukaku being a differential v the likes of Gabbi, and my Kane, Alli, Eriksen combo continuing to do the business.

WC a few weeks ago but currently on this for - 4:

      DDG
      Stephens Bertrand Davies
      San(c)hez Alli Eriksen King Hazard
      Gabbiadini Costa

      Pickford Rashford Bailly Gibson

Decision whether to get Cech or Kos or Gabriel for this week. 14 doubles plus King. Monitor Jesus for next week - would have to be a -4 or -8 to get Jesus and lose Rashford and another player with doubles.

Going without Kane as Eriksen and Davies are matching him and the loss is diminished as I wouldn't captain him the next two weeks. Costa £1m cheaper.

I am chasing a 50 pt lead in one of my minileagues (he doesn't have a WC); and am leading another by 15 pts from someone who does have a WC. So in for a penny as they say.

Last week I took a 12 point hit; and this week I will take a further 8. And perhaps another 4 next week 🙂

That will give me 13 for GW37 and 4 for this week. Seems a tad wasteful but to hell with it!

Yeah, but I wouldn't trust him. Lad loves his two-footed tackles 🙂

Taking out the following...Valencia, Gibson, De Roon, Kun, Tekkers and Kaku...

Who do I bring in to go with Gabriel and Cahill?

    A Hazard, Anichibe, Kane, Jesus
    Or
B Keep De Roon, Kane, Jesus, Costa

Slightly off the template, but I like it

Ozil + Vardy -> Gabbi + Sanchez to make it more mainstream?

      Alonso Cahill

Costa doesn't do hauls. Che defenders have a better chance of keeping a clean sheet given fixtures AND regularly give attacking returns

Overall, 3 games for Costa loses to 6 games from Alonso/Cahill in my view (36 and 37 combined)
