Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 36 – The Defence

We turn our attentions to the pair of Double Gameweek 36 teams next, providing the first of a two-part series assessing the array of options available to Fantasy managers.

Our analysis begins with a look at the defensive candidates, scanning for the likeliest source of points at both ends of the pitch while also considering their ability to collect bonus points.

It’s fair to say that the Arsenal backline boasts indifferent form ahead of a home clash with Manchester United and a trip to Southampton.

Three clean sheets in their previous four at home is offset by a dire run on the road that has harvested just a single shut-out in their last 13 away fixtures.

The Red Devils’ attack has been relatively reliable on their travels, netting at least twice in seven of their last nine away league matches, though Southampton have struggled for a cutting edge of late and have failed to find the net in three of their last four at St Mary’s.

While Laurent Koscielny remains the Gunners’ likeliest source of points from defence, he’s struggled to justify a lofty 6.1 price tag and has averaged just 3.9 points per match this season.

Nonetheless, the Frenchman is nailed-on when fit, has found the net twice this term and is more likely to collect bonus points than any defensive team-mate.

Number one Petr Cech (5.3) is similarly secure in terms of starts and, as evidenced by his nine stops at Spurs on Sunday, can still provide points should his defence concede.

That could be key considering that Arsenal have allowed more efforts in the box (43) than any side over the last four Gameweeks. Cech is ranked third for saves (16) during that period, despite playing on just three occasions – that’s more than Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford, for example, who produced 13 stops in four outings.

Arsene Wenger’s recent shift to a 3-4-2-1 set-up has to be factored into our thinking, with Gabriel and Nacho Monreal subject to over 26,000+ and 25,000+ respective new owners since Saturday’s deadline passed.

Utilised as a wing-back or on the left of the back-three, the versatile Monreal is the pricier of the pair (at 5.8 to the Brazilian’s 4.8) but registered his best haul of the campaign against Leicester City in Gameweek 34, courtesy of a 12-point return.

With Shkodran Mustafi still on the sidelines, Gabriel has now started each of the last five Gameweeks, though it’s worth bearing in mind that he was withdrawn on 74 minutes against Spurs on Sunday as Wenger reverted to a back four late on.

Southampton’s defence has been slightly more resilient of late, serving up three clean sheets in their previous six league fixtures.

But both Manchester City and Chelsea have plundered at least three goals against Claude Puel’s men in the last three Gameweeks amid fears that, with only pride left to play for, the Saints are already on the beach.

A trip to Anfield precedes their midweek encounter against the Gunners, and with both their opponents still in the search for a top-four finish, it’s debatable whether investment in Southampton’s main assets will be worthwhile.

Certainly, cut-price pair Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jack Stephens (4.2) have stepped up as more than just budget enablers of late, producing 34 and 31 points respectively over the last six.

Both delivered seven bonus points and three clean sheets during that run, with Yoshida grabbing a goal to Stephens’ assist.

By comparison, the 5.0-priced Fraser Forster earned just 23 points over that six-match run, with the Saints’ keeper earning save points in only four of his last 13 appearances.

The budget appeal of both Yoshida and Stephens has deterred many from eyeing up Ryan Bertrand.

At 5.5, the left-back represents the most expensive route into his side’s rearguard, yet he’s merited that lofty valuation – an average of 4.7 points per match is bettered by only Marcos Alonso and Seamus Coleman among FPL defenders this season.

In terms of underlying numbers, though, Bertrand’s fellow full-back Cedric Soares betters him for both key passes (35 to 21) and successful crosses (36 to 11).

Indeed, the Portuguese international – priced at just 4.8 – has produced attacking or defensive in five of his last six appearances and could be an overlooked option with a mere 2% ownership.

The Top Targets

Laurent Koscielny – with central defensive partner Mustafi still injured, Koscielny is the only fit member of Arsenal’s backline to find the net in the league this season. The top-scoring defender in FPL for bonus points, his total of 19 is more than twice that of any backline team-mate aside from Hector Bellerin (11), who has started just one of the last three due to Wenger’s tactical tinkering.

Petr Cech – a slightly less appealing option than Koscielny, perhaps, though the 0.8 difference in price could play a part in some managers’ thinking. Cech has failed to collect any bonus points in 2016/17 but, on the upside, has earned at least one save point in each of his last 12 league outings.

Jack Stephens – the number one transfer target in defence since last weekend, the Saints’ centre-half has been acquired by over 33,000 ahead of back-to-back double Gameweeks. Priced at 4.2, Stephens’ defensive contribution has produced at least two bonus points on each of the last three occasions that his side have delivered a clean sheet.

Maya Yoshida – no FPL defender has produced more attempts in the box (six) or efforts on target (three) over the last six Gameweeks than the Japan international. At just 4.5, Yoshida’s goal threat looks the most promising among Puel’s rearguard regulars.

Differential

Nacho Monreal – The Spaniard netted in the recent FA Cup semi-final win over Man City in his role as a Wembley wing-back. Nonetheless, with just nine bonus points accrued, the 4%-owned Monreal – who has scored just one league goal in five seasons in the Premier League – remains more of a gamble.

Gabriel – the Brazilian’s price is the main selling point. With no attacking returns to his name this term, Gabriel may need to rely on clean sheets to bring in the points, yet with Mustafi still sidelined, he looks set to offer the cheapest route into Wenger’s defence for the run-in. Four starts over the two double Gameweeks are far from assured, however.

Ryan Bertrand – a goal, four assists and as many clean sheets in his previous ten appearances highlights the left-back’s ability to deliver both defensive and attacking points. With Stephens and Yoshida so kindly priced, though, Bertrand remains a risky pick in light of the Saints’ opponents. With Dusan Tadic missing his spot-kick against Hull City on Saturday, there is just the merest chance that Bertrand will take on those duties for the season run-in – he would certainly rise in the Saints’ pecking order if James Ward-Prowse is off the pitch.

Yeah, fixtures are better for sure. Wouldn't mind Rose being out for the rest of the season really, so we could get Davies + double Chelsea.

Struggling with my defence for GW37 onwards, wouldn't mind some help. Current defence is:

    DDG Pickford
    Yoshida Robertson Bailly* Holgate Chambers*

Already on -4 with 0.8 ITB and my defence is OK for this week, but next week thinking of one of these moves:

    A. Bailly and Chambers -> Vert and Cook (-4)
    B. Bailly and Chambers -> Kompany and Smith (-4)

  10. Why not double up on Arsenal mids?
    Enzo the Baker
    • 10 Years

The case for a double up with Mesut Ozil

I think we're being driven too much by emotions and not by experience / statistics while avoiding Ozil. This is evident because the two algorithms to pick Wildcard / Transfer in players, both by Jonty on here and Triggerlips on his website show Ozil among the top 5 mids to have. (Ranked #5 by Jonty and #1 by TL). Both of these algorithms seem to take in form, fixtures, etc., so I'm not going to share Members' tables on here.

Suffice to say that in the 3-4-2-1, he plays just behind the central striker, and he's up against a tired Man Utd that travels to Spain on Thursday night, followed by a Soton team that are on the beach. An assist in each game, and you're looking at 12-15 pt haul.

I think he's a great option, and would have him ahead of Sane / Jesus / Costa this week as my 6th/7th attacker. I think we could wait and see what kind of team Pep puts out, and the Spurs & Chelsea results before getting S/J/C, and Ozil is a good placeholder for now.

    1. Enzo the Baker
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 2 days ago

By emotions I mean that he never seems to be doing much on the pitch, seem uninterested, not active and trying to score goals like Sanchez all the time, etc. So it's easy to be put off by him

    2. RealSocialDads
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 2 days ago

I like Ozil as a pick, gone with him over Sanchez which could backfire

    3. Deano

So is he a viable Sanchez option playing in a similar role?

      1. Enzo the Baker

        7 years, 2 days ago

Nope, would only get him in a double up with Sanchez.

Alexis is far and away the more dangerous, explosive player, can see many triple captains on him, etc. Wouldn't risk going without unless you're chasing and far behind in MLs

        1. Deano

My setup with TV of 105M is something like :

            Pickford
            Yoshi Steph Monreal
            Haz Alexis Ozil Alli King
            Kane Gabbi

bench : Benteke Blind Gibson Hennessey
I don't have a wildcard but I think this kind of team can be built with TV of 103M too, maybe Blind+Gibson+Monreal -> Holgate+Gabriel+cheap def

I'll have the same front 7 following this week's transfers - would have had it already if I hadn't made the mistake in my GW34 wildcard of replacing King with Son.

I would rather have Jesus instead of Gabbi if I was playing my wildcard now, but I do find it a bit surprising that Ozil has been mentioned as an alternative to Sanchez but that no-one else had suggested the possibility of having both.

Same here, Wildcarded in GW34 before the resurrection of Jesus.

It's -8 minimum in GW36 & GW37 for me to keep up with the template and get more DGWers

Only way i can get Sanchez without sacrificing eriksen or alli is Gabbi to Anichebe and then Carroll to Sanchez for -8. Would you do it? I am not atm.

I would get sanchez for a -8, but it also depends on your Minileague / OR. Are you leading by like 60+ pts in ML ? Are you indifferent to Overall Rank position? If yes to both, then going without Sanchez could be fun

Only have a lead of 9 in ML. Main rival has Sanchez. However he does not have Kane, Hazard and Jesus who i have and has inferior TV. If i don't get Sanchez was going to get Vardy in this week.

Sounds boring, but would get Sanchez and block rival. Kane/Haz/Jesus should win it for you.

Unless he has Gabbiadini and TCs him or something, but that's a risk you'd be willing to take

I'm toying with the idea, really like him as a double up option with Sanchez. Would be a move mainly for 37 too as they have cracking fixtures as well. Do you excpect Ozil and Gabriel to outscore King and Monreal over the next 2? Weird dilemma but that's basically what it comes down to for my team.

        Haha a truly weird dilemma.

I looked at your team after -8 (is this right ?) :

        Picky Willy
        Alonso Davies Gabriel Yoshida Fabio
        Sanchez Hazard Ozil Alli Sane
        Kane Jesus Anichebe

Looks good to me if you're feeling a little adventurous. If playing safe then King+Monreal beats Gabriel+Ozil just for reliable returns

Well if you're going to be driven by statistics, you'd drop Sanchez now. Look at his returns over past 6/7 gws and Arsenals general performance. I'd wager that people generally only have him out of the 'fear' factor. He will probably be an 8 point captain next gw

Absolutely, Sanchez statistics not great and we're all keeping him out of fear / history of explosive returns.

      DDG Pickford
      Stephens McAuley Davies PVA Gibson
Hazard Sanchez Alli Coutinho De Roon
      Kane Lukaku Gabbi

      A) Coutinho & Lukaku >> Ozil & Jesus (-8)

I'm actually tempted by Giroud alongside Sanchez. All four of ARS's opponents are likely to sit back and Giroud usually does well in those kinds of matches. I'd also expect him to feature in all four matches and he has a good record off the bench. Question comes down to:

      Sane+Giroud+.7 ITB
      Ozil+Gabbi+.5 ITB

      Thoughts?

TBH I would get Ozil over Giroud, there's just too much doubt over that CF position : Giroud is the favorite but Welbeck, Sanchez and even Walcott at a stretch can play there. Giroud suffers from his lack of versatility.

So it's Ozil + Gabbi for me, and try to get Jesus at some point for man city attacking cover

cheers. Problem is it's Ozil hit-and-miss nature vs Giroud's insecurity of starts...so both a bit of a punt imho.

I personally think doubling up in their defence is better. Man U will likely do what they did v City and a troubled Southampton could not score at home v travel sick Hull.

Right lads just one question; would you do Coutinho > Ozil this week for your FT? Bear in mind I have no WC left....

        Team is curently:

        Heaton
        Bailly Huth Fuchs
        Alli Hazard King Couts
        Kane Gabs Vardy

        Subs: Foster, Ward-Prowse, Jags, Davies

Looking at a budget defence after a scout comment made around the Picks competition.

What do you guys think of this WC with BB in 37? O ITB.

      Caballero Pickford
      Gabriel Stephens Yoshida Holgate Kone
      Sanchez Hazard Pedro Sane King/Redmond
      Jesus Kane Costa

Love the team, 9/10 for me. Not sold on the Pedro love, would sell him for be Albrighton and upgrade Kone to Vertonghen & Gabriel/Pick to Monreal/Cech. Also would keep King ahead of Redmond.

I think the message is that Courtois might be nursing an injury. If he is playing through the pain it is extremely likely that he will be replaced by Begovic as soon as the title is won, if not sooner, to avoid long term injury.

I think you'll be safe but you do run the risk of only getting 1 DGW game out of him, possibly. I'm on Willy and Pickford but this is partly to fund a premium defence habit.

I really don't have much faith in Arsenal or Sunderland keeping cleanies and might stick with Court & Pickford. I can always transfer Courtois out in 38 if he only plays against WBA in 37.

On this WC atm. Boosting 37.

      Caballero - Pickford
      Alonso - Monreal - Yoshida - Stephens - £4.4m
      Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Pedro - Albrighton
      Kane - Jesus - Gabbiadini

Sanchez probably the only player I'm unsure of, which is annoying given his price tag.
