Team Of The Season – Romelu Lukaku

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku was always expected to build on a career-best 185 points from the 2015/16 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season.

The Belgian duly obliged, registering 25 goals and six assists to total 221 points which ranked him second among FPL forwards.

He was undoubtedly one of the season’s stars, with Lukaku’s performances earning his first-ever selection in the PFA Team of the Year, while he also takes his place alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane as the second forward in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Despite his strong showing in 2015/16, Lukaku was only handed a starting price of 9.0 in FPL.

After missing the first match of the season against Spurs due to a foot injury, Lukaku then suffered two successive blanks as his campaign stalled.

But he scored twice for Belgium in a 3-0 win over Cyprus during the international break and then produced a breathtaking 11-minute hat-trick against Sunderland in Gameweek 4.

That was followed by a further four goals and three assists over his next six appearances as his value rocketed to 9.9, with the striker found in 1,476,014 squads by Gameweek 12.

A tougher run of fixtures then slowed his ascent, with Lukaku suffering six blanks in seven Gameweeks, ensuring that his price fell back to 9.4.

But an 11-point haul in a 3-0 home win over Southampton would kick start an incredible run of form at Goodison Park which would define Lukaku’s season.

He went on to score in each of his next seven home matches, registering 12 goals, two assists and 12 bonus points. He also produced four double-digit hauls, including a momentous 21 points in the 6-3 win against Bournemouth in Gameweek 24 when he scored four goals.

His price in FPL peaked at 10.5 during this period, with the Belgian now found in over 2,100,000 squads – making him the most popular FPL asset.

Lukaku’s form tailed off towards the end of the season, but he did score a penalty in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on the final day.

In terms of his underlying statistics, he ranked fourth among FPL forwards for goal attempts with 110, and joint-fourth for shots from inside the box with 80.

The Toffees striker was very accurate during 2016/17 though, registering 53 shots on target – only Kane (58) produced more.

Lukaku also shone as a creator, registering 47 key passes, placing him joint-first among FPL forwards.

The excellent value he offered throughout the season was reflected in the Belgian ranking third for points per million for forwards with a score of 21.9.

He also excelled in terms of bonus points, racking up 33 – a tally matched only by Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and his Golden Boot rival Kane.

The Prospects

Following such a prolific campaign, there is no doubt that Lukaku will earn a significant price hike next season.

However, with the striker having reportedly reached an agreement with another club – with Chelsea and Manchester United appearing to be leading the chase – the scale of that increase is still uncertain.

If he does end up at either Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford, that will surely confirm his status as one of the most expensive players in the game, perhaps placing him around the 11.5 mark.

Such a move throws up numerous permutations that make assessing Lukaku’s prospects for next season very difficult.

How much competition he has will be a factor, given that he started 36 matches last season and was guaranteed a place in Everton’s first XI when fit.

Diego Costa’s uncertain future at Chelsea would suggeset that a move for Lukaku will suit both parties and the latest reports suggest that the Blues are now favourites to seal his capture.

But while he would be expected to command a starting berth at either Chelsea or United, the fact both teams will play in the Champions League next season means he will be more vulnerable.

On the other hand, the prospects for the Belgian could increase significantly with the benefit of an improved supply from midfield and the flanks.

Chelsea scored 85 goals and registered 580 goal attempts last season, compared to 62 and 502 respectively for Everton.

Meanwhile, United’s goal conversion rate of 9.1% was the fourth lowest in the top flight, indicating their need for a top quality striker.

With the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic still uncertain, the addition of Lukaku, who boasted a goal conversion rate of 22.7% last term – significantly stronger than Ibrahimovic (14.8) – could be crucial if Jose Mourinho’s side are to embark on a stronger campaign next time around.

However, United are also courting Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata with reports suggesting that he is bound for Old Trafford.

Regardless of his destination, Lukaku’s combination of pace, power and accurate finishing makes him a frightening prospect for opposition defences, and with the 24-year-old maturing year by year, he is set to challenge Kane and possibly Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero as the leading forward option next season.

Certainly, in terms of consistency and the potential to deliver big points hauls, he is currently the most likely challenger to that pair.

The next month will surely shape how we view Lukaku as a Fantasy prospect, with a move to a top six club perhaps inspiring him to reach yet another level in 2017/18.

We need a seperate forum I reckon for all elite managers. I would say top 100 including me (as my idea). Would be some great analysis and discussion and surely one of us would win it.

Open forum like the current format will only attract more bad advice from randoms and people who have no clue.

Love to take a look at your 'top 100' team for some top tips. Any chance you can link your team?

Not saying you are not top 100, you obviously are, even without evidence, that fact is plain for all to see...but some evidence would be good for some of the sceptics among the community.

Top 100 is more of a benchmark. There would be certain exceptions as i said above. For example me as it was my idea (im not top 100 yet but plan to break it next season). Plus I know my analysis is top notch.

Would gladly allow you in too Jonty even though you're not top 100 anymore.

Glad to see I'm in such fine company as yourself outside of the top 100 🙂

What would be useful for those aspiring to match you would be to post a link to your team. We need to learn from the best - but only have half the story about your incredible achievements in the transfer market and with the captaincy over the last season.

Linking teams opens the door for copy cats. Happend already to Triggerlips from what I heard. A bunch of people copied his transfers word for word. That could cost me the title, place in top 100 etc.

That was because he published his moves on his blog before the deadline each week - anybody attempting to copy your linked team would always be 1 week behind and would soon be scuppered by failing to catch price rises, etc.

Is it really possible to mirror a team? To copy someone's transfers step by step you would need to select the same initial line-up and then be in on the act from day one and time transfers identically to catch rises. Improbable bordering on impossible.

Last season, I was talking transfers on Tuesday in the ScouCast, showing my team and discussing transfers on the show on Thursday night and then writing the Preamble on Saturday morning - often based on my transfers. I don't think I can claim I missed out on the top 100 for that reason.

Not hard i dont think. You just need to really copy the main starting 11. Can easily be done when you post your team here for opinions. Pretty easy to decipher someones transfers based on monet itb etc and fff have that feature now which it tell you what transfers your rival has made.

Plus Mark i think you may be wrong about not missing out on top100 due to talking about your team. Gurantee their would have been many teams copying you esp now as you are on the official fpl show as an expert. All you need is 2 or 3 managers who copied you finising above you to miss out.

                You finished 115th. Go figure.

Are you for real? This has reminded me why I stopped posting a couple of years back. If you did finish inside the top 100 then I can guarantee it won't happen again the year after. My first two seasons were blinding and I thought I was unstoppable. That all changed in season three LOL. There is so much luck involved. Decent players can consistently get themselves in the top 10 - 20%, but top 100? Forget about it. More importantly who gives a damn, will winning FPL equal money and success - nope!

Surely if you built a forum, you could invite all of the most brilliant brains and personalities in the FPL Universe and it would be an awesome place. One filled with scintillating discussions about all things FPL, non-FPL, social, political, personal and scandalous. People would abandon all of their other forums to come to your new elite discussion board. You could call it FPL Heaven. Or something like that. Where only the gods are allowed. I'd obviously be on the outside looking in, though, but I'm sure you'd have fun.

How good was Rio Ferdinand when he joined United for around £30 million back in 2002 (I was half my current age in 2002 so I wouldn't know) ?

Are the cases of Ferdinand comparable? Certainly the transfer fee is..

From what i recall Rio was already a first choice England player and had CL experience from his time at Leeds.. was a superb player even then although the fee was huge at the time it proved to be a bargain.. when you factor in how much longer goalkeepers can operate at the highest level this could well be the case with Pickford too.. excellent business imo

Think John Stones but without the mistakes and a better tackler.
Can't compare fees though. Rio would be £50m player at that age now , like Stones.

30m then must be equivalent of over 100m today's market. In 07 Chelsea sold robben and bought shevchenko both for 30m. Two of the best attacking players in the world.

Also Rio was way better than stones is .

        Wasted money by Everton IMO.

Pickford is a great young keeper but Everton are Everton and don't have access to unlimited spending power. That money could and should have been used to strengthen outfield rather than the keeper.

Does this mean the Lukaku > somebody deal is on btw?....it would seem like an awful lot of money for Everton if it hasn't come from that pot...

While I do think it's a high fee for him, KN makes a good point about it being a long-term investment. I would personally spend that much outfield like you said however. And yes, Lukaku looks set to be gone.

I disagree. They are strengthening perhaps their weakest position. Robles isn't good enough imo, and they obviously don't trust Stekelenberg enough, and fair enough because he is just so injury prone.

If the get Klaassen in for Barkley and then a suitable replacement for Lukaku then they are very well set for the coming season imo

What's he like then Klassen? Is he good enough do you think? I'm hearing box to box mid, not exactly a goal scorer but a good finisher. Is he creative? Plays in the midfield 3?

I think he's good enough. He is box-to-box, and not super creative, but he has improved this the past season or 2.

He has only ever really played in a midfield 3, since Ajax don't play anything else. he is a good finisher. 55 goals in 180 games. 20 goals last season, and 15 the season before. And before people say that's just the Eredivise, his record of 11 in 44 CL & EL games is pretty decent.

He's better than Barkley for me.

I think Koeman just work out pretty quickly that he's not good enough for where we want to be. If he wasn't home grown there wouldn't be such a fuss.

I don't disagree with the fact that they needed to, and have, strengthened their weakest position but Pickford is the hottest property in the game in that position.

They could easil have bought a very capable keeper for considerably less money and left the genuinely big money boys to squabble over Pickford.

The actual fee is only £15M the rest is add ons for targets reached...not that this matters to Towers.

Everton were pretty decent for a CS before, so this may improve things, might still be worth it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Lukaku a viable Fantasy option next season?

With a price hike expected to around the 11.5 mark and a move likely to Chelsea or another top four side - will Lukaku be worth investment.

Fantastic at home to poor sides for Everton, he was found wanting on the road and against top sides. But does that make him a better option - you know you can trust him with the armband during easy matches and swerve for tougher clashes. But at 11.5 or so do you expect a player you can put the armband on week in week out if needed.

Also is he actually good enough to play for a top four side?

He will have to take second place to Kane in my team - at least at the start.

I will be looking at 352 again.

Big Lukaku fan his record over the years speaks for itself but still have slight reservations whether he can continue to find the net as regularly for a side with title ambitions.. would have to wait and see.. it is unlikely he will have penalties at Chelsea which dampens the appeal significantly at that price for me

Depends on price, fixtures and form. Can't see how he would do badly at Chelsea though.

Theres a lot of chat about Lukaku struggling against the big sides, but the fact is he was playing for Everton against the big sides. He wasn't going to get as much of a sniff as other top bracket strikers, like Aguero, who would still create chances. Strangely people didn't mention Deeney or Gray 'struggling against the big sides'. I reckon he'll get a load if Hazard and Fabregas keep sticking them on a plate

For me his anti-troll status is key. Very predictable hauls in the main. Strong chance of returns against the minnows at home.

I think though Kane and Jesus have the edge if going for two heavy hitter strikers - due to pens and being able to score against anyone.

There is admittedly a small base of games...but I like what I see so far. Also he's on pens - which is gold for a top side with lots of tricksy players waiting to be fouled. If he can hopefully come in at 10m or under I think he'll be better value. Worth the 'gamble' definitely....especially as unlike Lukaku, Jesus will be at the same club and pretty much be supplied by the same people.

Does really well on my table.

Only two other players had a quicker shot in the box rate than the young Brazilian last term...and arguably only one regular starter is better at him that firing off close range efforts.

But the problem with that table is that measures exactly that - quantity of shots on target - which Jesus can never compete in as he only joined in January and was injured.

This table crunches that down to shots on target per minute....and guess what he's really high up in that too - and even better than a certain tall Chelsea bound Belgian

I like per minute stats provided you're comparing players who are starters when fit - per minute stats are definitely skewed for players who get subbed on a lot.

This table is designed to be used OVER THE LAST TWO GAME WEEKS. You set it otherwise at your own peril.

                        😉

Ranks 4th over last 4 gameweeks - any longer than that and you start to cut into the period when he was injured and wasn't playing.

Thing is, I watch that table the whole time, and, taking injuries into account, he has been very in and out. Kane and Lukaku have so far been much steadier. Still, I am not ruling Jesus out completely. But I wonder about his value for money.

The fact he was in at all is quite impressive really.

He played 90 minutes in GWs 23 and 24 (his first starts) - filtering your table to these 2 weeks and he's joint 2nd.

He then got a nasty injury and didn't play 90 minutes again until GW35 after which he ranked in the top 4.

Harsh to criticise him for not doing well on the table outside of those periods - he wasn't on the pitch!

His performance patterns last season indicate that he plays well when the team as a whole are more attacking (playing at home to weak sides). But when the team is not set up to attack (away matches and @home against the big 6) he struggles.

By this logic, he should be scoring fairly consistently next season , since Chelsea and United would be set up to attack almost every game.
He could be the new essential.....

Will not touch him. His first touch is very poor and when playing for a top team against banks of 4 which dont give you space he will struggle. Just like he struggled first time around at chelsea and hence why Mou sold him. Opposition allowed Everton to play and gave him space to run into.

      A no from me.

I don't believe his big game bottler tag. Is there any evidence for it? I think all players score less against the better teams because their defence is, you know, better. In my draft plan ahead of Kane at the moment.

Is he good enough for a top four side?!?!? You're really asking that! The man is a beast, who has consistently played well in a pretty average Everton side. Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea would give their right arm to have him leading their attack. One of the best young talents in world football. I think people actually forget how young he is. He is only going to get better over the next 5-7 years in my opinion.

Yes imo. I do feel that he's good enough to play for a top 4 club. I think his dodgy away form and that against top sides could be gotten rid of if playing in a better team. Could do some great damage with better service.

Perfect fantasy player so predictable. Plan to move in and out dependant on fixtures and circumstance. For example If i dont plan to captain him for a while due to other better options could get rid without worry. Hes not on that aguero/kane level yet.

I'm sure I'll own him at some stage but probably not at the start. Pedro will be about 3m cheaper and with Hazard injured should be a safe pick even if they sign someone. He's the value option in the Chelsea attack imo.

If he moves to a better side he'll get more chances and score more goals. He relies on service. If Everton play well he'll score, if not he'll go missing. Bit of a myth imo he doesn't turn in big games etc, Everton don't often turn up in big games hence no goals for Lukaku.
Is he good enough to play for a top 4 side? He better be, he's going to cost enough.

Unless he improves away from home, I would look elsewhere for a forward. If I draft Kane and Jesus, chances are I wouldn't be able to afford Lukaku anyway. We will see what the transfer period brings and where the Belgian ends up.

And all for less than 130m (unless they increase their prices).

    Taken from Premierleague.com.

"When the fixtures for the 2017/18 Premier League season come out at 9am BST Wednesday 14 June, the numbers suggest that Chelsea will be the opponents the clubs will wish to avoid on the opening weekend.

This is not only because they are the defending Premier League champions but also because Chelsea have an unmatchable record in season-opening fixtures.

Since the Premier League's inaugural 1992/93 campaign, Chelsea have won 16, drawn six and lost only three of their Matchweek 1 outings.

Their points-per-match tally of 2.16 is the best of the 2017/18 clubs. Manchester United are the only other team to boast an average above two points per match."

With this in mind and likely price rises for Chelsea players, how many will you be hoping to have from Chelsea and United come gw1?

Price permitting I'm aiming to have a defender and attacker from each.

Chelsea defs will be the most expensive and probably pushing £7k for Alonso and Cahill.

5 of his last season goals were penalties, and he's not getting any better. Decline showing already, 4 non penalty goals this year: 2 against crisis team Palace, 1 against Stoke and 1 against Hull. At least he was predictable, but I'm not expecting much from him next season.

Risk a bet? I'm saying he won't get to 10 non-penalty goals in PL next season.

A condition like that is BS. You're saying basically that assuming that he will perform so well that he will be indisponible for a PL club, he will score 10+ non-penalties. But the bet is about whether he will perform that well. If he doesn't perform, in which case I'm going to be right, he is likely NOT to get 90 minutes day-in day-out.

I expect the best GK value will be 4.5x2. Should give you funds for Son @ 7.5m though!

FPL are going to have to exercise a degree of restraint on pricing - they can't just have every desirable at 9.0m + this year!

Kaku shouldn't be more than his peak price of 10.5m imo. He scored less points than Alli, who won't cost more than 10.5m.

Alli should be more than 10.5, and Lukaku scored about the same points per game (6.0 v 6.1). In a bigger team, Chelsea, the lonely CF, he's likely to up that. Both at 11.0 for me.

The knock on Alli, his lack of bonus points. If he and Erisken are similarly priced, I will go Eriksen. Although I see both players improving, hopefully Wembley doesn't do a whammy on them as their home turf this season.

That will probably depend a lot on whether he gets his transfer before or after the price is set. But that's a bit low. 7.5?

But it would be stupid to imagine that you just must be able to afford the team you had in the END of last season despite those players having outscored their value massively. The players from Liverpool, ManU and Tottenham are not just going to stay in the semi-budget bracket forever while they top the table in points returns and their teams fight for the top places in the league. They Spurs guys were in every team by the end of the last season because they were seriously undervalued in the game. Liverpool similar, except the mild rotation nightmare putting people off a bit.

There have always been unexpectedly well performing budget players, and there will be again. Stanislas scored the same ppg as Firmino and Özil. Sigurdsson and King came close. Alli cost you close to nothing the season before. There will be players like that next season as well. You just have to find them when the next season starts, preferably predict before it.

Arsenal and Leicester players like Özil, Giroud, Mahrez, and both teams' defences, should drop in prices, and Martial and Firmino, for example, should also be available in the 9.0 or less category. Who knows, they may have excellent seasons next time.

I dont see why the players from the top 6 that are already settled in the first team would get a big price rise. They didn't think Eriksen, Alli, Coutinho, Sanchez, KDB and Kane would score a lot of points? I get it when Alli, Mahrez, Vardy and some other guys got a hefty price rise after a break through season but all of the other hitters must have been expected to do well?

Are you at all aware of how much they scored? You know, they have to price them relative to each other.

Counting only players who played more than a couple of matches this season, this is the top of the league ppg's:

            Kane 7.5
            Sanchez 6.9
            (Jesus 6.7)
            Hazard 6.2
            Eriksen 6.1
            Alli 6.1
            Lukaku 6.0
            Mané 5.8
            Zlatan 5.8
            Alonso 5.7
            Costa 5.6
            Kun 5.6
            Coutinho 5.5
            KDB 5.5

Jesus played so little that he is a little question mark.

Before you say this was bad season for Kun, he has actually scored between 5.5-6.0 for a few seasons now. He has been priced 12.5-13.0 all the time. Kane scored 5.5-5.6 last two seasons, Aguero like figures that won him 11.0 pricing for this season. KDB got 10.5 for this season with 5.2 ppg last season.

And you'd think Mané, Lukaku, Eriksen and Alli are correctly priced at 10.0 or less? They didn't expect these guys to score that much points this season, because their previous season's ppgs were not nearly this high. Best were Eriksen and Lukaku at 5.0. And that was for 1-2 seasons, depending on player.

They have now steadily been upping their performances and there's a reason to believe they will keep on scoring. They're all young, coming better every year, Alli has nailed a place as support striker, Mané plays basically as a forward, they all have great underlying stats, Lukaku may get a move to a bigger club and still command the CF spot.

I don't say FPL should price them expecting them to outscore Aguero better season's ppg next season. I'm not saying price them 13.0. But since they scored like a pair Agueros of a strong season, certainly 11.0 should not be too much, and pricing them similarly to earlier seasons would be wrong.

This is all perfectly logical, until you take into account that this would make the game harder and more frustrating for casuals. FPL lives off its casuals; if it drives them all away by pricing players realistically and only allowing casuals to afford 2 max 3 big names, there will be less of a base for it. Which will end up in less players for FPL. Which isn't what they want.

All I'm saying, the prices must be in line. If Spurs & Liverpool players are arbitrarily priced lower than the other big6, then it's no question, they will be better value, and everybody who half follows will triple up on both teams' attacks and never look at Arsenal or City.

That would also be unfair to the casuals, who might not be aware that Spurs and Liverpool are relatively too low priced, and they would leave the game because they start to lose ground soon.

So, you'd also think that FPL should just arbitrarily price some top-6 teams' players lower than others, despite them scoring as well or better? Or what's the reason why Liverpool and Spurs players should be priced lower than City and Arsenal players?

              Ok. My point:

Liverpool and Spurs players should not be arbitrarily priced lower than other top-6 clubs players. They should be priced according to how much they can be expected to score. Which depends on 1) how nailed-on they are and 2) how much points they score by game.

So, if a Spurs player is as nailed on and scores as much by game than an Arsenal player, he should be similarly priced. Right? And if he scores more, he should be higher priced, right?

I think Eriksen and Alli's price difference, or rather if there is one will be interesting.

Another is the historic poor performance of many players the season after a stellar one. So often players fail to live up to the price tag (eg Mahrez, Michu, Vardy, Ireland). I do hope Vardy in particular is priced at the 8- 8.5 mark - game desparately needs strikers in that price rage.

Ireland! Nice throwback. I remember having him in my team that season - he was immense. Think he was Man City's player of the season when they had the likes of Robinho, Elano, Sturridge, Kompany, etc. He really threw it away.

Those players were from smaller clubs. We're speaking of Liverpool and Tottenham here, both teams producing very strong attacking numbers, and so are all these players in them. And Eriksen already had strong 2 seasons before this. Only reason they are priced low is that Liverpool and Spurs spent a few years out of top-4. They can't be priced on that premise forever.

Predictions for top four next year off the top of your head? In no particular order, mine are probably:
    City
    Chelsea
    Tottenham
    Arsenal
Not sure about Liverpool's squad dealing with the added games

They won't replace traditional FPL with a draft league, surely not? Most likely imo if they do add it as a feature they would make it in tandem to the actual game

I think it's the doubling up of chips. Two times in a season.

        Please no.

I'd love a mystery feature of 'no chips'.

It's just a guess mate. I'm not involved in it in anyways. I think Mark could give us a better idea but I will wait for the mystery to reveal itself.

Yeah, I was just hoping you guess it wrong. 😀

That would be just like FPL though.

I'd prefer a FT double up, I miss having the two FT's a week that I use to get in the Metro PL and European games.

      Reply above 🙂
Re-reply: Don't think they would replace traditional FPL with a draft league, if they do do it, it would be an expansion in game.

I can't see that either, how would you get on overall FPL champions if we are split into 200000 odd draft league's ?

True. They'd probably put it into another game entirely if they were to do it

Agreed, with maybe a corny prize like a certificate for each draft league winner. If's it prize draft league i'm in however.

I remember there was someone talking about FPL adding an official a draft game for next season maybe a month ago. He seemed very confident about this information if I remember correctly.

As somebody who much prefers small mini leagues to any other game (3-5 players) this would be awesome...A whole new kettle of fish.

I'd love to see the "stick or twist" element of UFPL captains brought into FPL.

Hope not, i've lost count of how many times i've been burn't heavily in other games that have/had that feature.

Why I don't think they will bring it is that wide majority of FPL managers are casuals and won't be committed enough to change captaincy during GW if the first captain blanks. They would soon drop too far behind to be interested, and would give up the game. And that's probably not what they want in the FPL towers.

Actually, that's a very good point you make. Any changes (if FPL have any sense) should be geared towards keeping players engaged in the game for the duration of the season rather than the opposite.

          Point taken.

I bet the new feature on fpl is a 'direct link to ffs', fixture ticker and such...

Draft leagues are the reason I quit playing fantasy (American) football after 35 years, when the draft is essentially useless and using free agency and a waiver wire that doesn't penalize those owners who end up building an entirely new team.
