Team Of The Season – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

As the biggest name to arrive in the Premier League last summer, there was signicant hype surrounding new Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic among Fantasy Football communities.

He went on to enjoy a successful season at Old Trafford, scoring 28 goals in all competitions as Jose Mourinho’s side won both the Capital One Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

And while Spurs’ Harry Kane and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku were the stand-out options among the forwards across the Fantasy games, Ibrahimovic sees off Chelsea’s Diego Costa to claim the final spot in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Handed an initial price tag of 11.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ibrahimovic was selected by 1,270,022 managers heading into Gameweek 1.

That figure reflected the fact the forward polarised opinion during pre-season, but a goal and maximum bonus points in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth quickly silenced any doubters.

He then registered a brace in the 2-0 victory against Southampton, with his 13-point haul forcing many who had gone without the Swede up to that point to alter their plans.

By Gameweek 5, Ibrahimovic was owned by over 2,400,000 FPL managers, with his price reaching a season-high of 11.9.

That early-season form was to prove a false dawn though, with the United striker blanking in five consecutive matches between Gameweeks 6 and 10.

By the time Mourinho’s men travelled to Swansea City in Gameweek 11, Ibrahimovic’s price had dropped to 11.1 and he’d lost over 1,100,000 owners along the way.

But that trip to south Wales proved to be a turning point, with Ibrahimovic scoring twice in a 3-1 victory.

Further goals followed against West Ham United and Everton before the former Paris St-Germain forward embarked on his best run of form between Gameweeks 16 and 18.

Over those three matches, he produced four goals, three assists and eight bonus to total 38 points in FPL.

Ibrahimovic’s price returned to its peak of 11.7, but he would never reach those heights again despite remaining a consistent point scorer – he registered a goal or an assist in five of his next seven starts.

His season was dramatically derailed during the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in Gameweek 27.

He returned a Gameweek score of -1 after missing a penalty and picking up a yellow card, and he was then handed a retrospective three-match ban for clashing with Cherries defender Tyrone Mings.

Ibrahimovic did return from suspension to score twice and register an assist in his next two appearances, but his season was cruelly brought to a premature end after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage against Anderlecht in the Europa League.

He concluded the FPL season with 163 points, ranking him sixth among forwards, although he averaged 5.8 points per match, which was bettered only by Kane (7.5), Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus (6.7) and Lukaku (6.0).

Despite only playing 28 matches, Ibrahimovic placed second among FPL forwards for shots with 115, averaging a chance every 21.2 minutes.

He also shone as a creator, with no other forward managing more key passes than his 47, seven of which led to assists.

The Prospects

It was confirmed last Friday that United have released Ibrahimovic following the end of his one-year deal, deciding against taking up the option of a second year.

His departure leaves only Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney as the senior strikers currently on the books at Old Trafford.

After a brilliant performance in the 2-0 win over Chelsea and some important goals in United’s Europa League success, Rashford currently looks the primary option heading into next season, although a new signing in this position is surely inevitable.

Used mainly out wide during the first half of the season, Rashford enough flashes of brilliance in Ibrahimovic’s absence but would again seem destined to surrender the central striker role to a new signing.

Martial did play some matches in the lone striker role following Ibrahimovic’s season-ending injury, but it remains to be seen whether his long-term future will be as a centre forward or back out wide.

Rooney, meanwhile, has fallen down the pecking order, with his future at the club looking uncertain.

The skipper has been linked with a move away with just one year left on his current deal, although his wage demands could mean he sees out the rest of his contract as a bit-part player.

Mourinho is certain to bring in at least one big-name forward, with a deal to acquire Real Madrid hitman Alvaro Morata to the club reportedly in progress.

There are suggestions that personal terms have already been agreed with the player, leaving only a fee to be negotiated between the two clubs. The player’s agent has also confirmed that an “important offer” has been made to Madrid by United with reports today stating that a deal is close.

The Spanish international produced 15 goals and five assists in 26 league outings last season, despite being a bit-part player, and has plenty of experience having also enjoyed a two-year spell at Juventus.

United have also been heavily linked with a move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, with some speculation suggesting Mourinho is keen to sign both players.

The 23-year-old Italian registered a hugely impressive 26 goals and eight assists in 35 league appearances last season in a side that was only able to finish ninth in Serie A.

Both players underlying statistics from 2016/17 are pretty similar, with Belotti averaging a shot every 23.6 minutes, slightly superior to Morata (24.3).

They both fell slightly short of Ibrahimovic’s mark of a chance every 21.2 minutes, but in Belotti’s case, he would certainly be part of a side creating a lot more chances than he is used to at Torino, while an increase in starts for Morata should also boost his numbers.

Fantasy managers will be taking a keen eye on United’s activity and pre-season matches to try and establish the pecking order among the United forwards, but while Morata and Belotti are both talented individuals and boast huge potential, they’ll do well to adapt to English football as quickly as Ibrahimovic did.

Even with those doubts, today’s publication of the 2017/18 fixtures gave us reason to increase our interest in United’s assets. Jose Mourinho’s side avoid all of last season’s top six over the opening six Gameweeks and arguably have the smoothest opening of any of the likely title contenders.

He had a number on us. I don't even think he was that bad. Got them to a league cup final, did ok in the league, developed players. What more do Southampton want?

Personally thought he frequently looked clueless as to how they should set up. Kinda got the defensive structure right in the end, but I dunno, never felt he was inspiring the team at all.

Though they can't expect to do better every season when they sell their best players.

Second draft of my fixture ticker is available.

    - Teams are now rated according to their GF, GA stats for both home and away last season. So West Ham, who struggled to score at home, only have a 2 rating, while the same formula returns 5 for Bournemouth. This provides a decent baseline for you to tweak following off-season transfers and manager changes.

I watched this skills and goals compilation earlier, and wasn't that impressed. Looks a backup for Mané. But guessing the transfer fee will mean he might play on the left with Coutinho dropping deeper perhaps?

His talent means he would start if he signed. One of those midfielders is going to get dropkicked to the bench so Coutinho goes deeper. Might be still a way to go with this transfer, Monchi is hard to please.

Well Kane should be on a par if not dearer than Aguero i argued that this time last year.. i expect they will have woken up to that finally.. seems harsh to drop Aguero in price though.. they could both be 13 maybe? maybe Aguero 12.5 but surely a drop of any more than that wouldn't be warranted

Yeah I'd say £12.5...which is still over-priced for me.I'd only consider him if is priced at £11.5m which won't happen. Most ppl will still go with Jesus (around £10.5m)...Aguero could be a differential at start of season.

Anyone else seriously eyeing up KDB for GW1?

Really think he will deliver big time this season. Showed brilliant form at the end of this season and hit the woodwork the most during last season too. I know that means very little but stil gives good food for thought.

Him & a Liverpool mid (Salah if he signs) are my top midfielder priorities.

    1. UnitedFan
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Thinking of him as my premium midfielder too. With all the attacking threat City have, points are obviously likely to be shared and rotation will occur. Set-pieces are something KDB has over his team mates which will help him be amongst these points. And like you said, he was unlucky not to get more goals last season as he hit the woodwork many times. They're fine margins. He also seems relatively safer from rotation?

      1. Pirlø's Pen
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

If he comes in at 10 it'll be a no brainer, don't think he's merited a price increase to 11.0, which bides well for my plans.

KDB is clearly a Pep favourite, reports have suggested that he signed KDB when he was at Bayern a year before joining. He is his chief creator, very little players can match his creativity stats, and unlike those like Tadic he has the clinical edge to deliver.

Set pieces is also very key, especially in a tea, with so many tricky players, free kicks are inevitable.

Early days obviously but with some decent fixtures and KDB being arguably fixture proof I think I've already decided in my mind he'll be my premium 10m + midfielder!

I think Sane is a lot more nailed than people are making him out to be. He is Peps boy, I also really like him as a player, he is electric.

Think he could do very well but still think KDB's range of ways to aquire points gives him the edge. Whether that edge merits the price difference is the question.

Suppose he was a little overpriced, not by much though, was all about owning him at the right time. Don't like to bring luck into it but I do think the guy was unlucky last season and still managed 199 points.

He may play a little deeper than a no. 10 but is often furthest forward in a midfield 3 which is very similar to a 10.

Definitely one to monitor and one I excpect to do a lot better this season! (And City in general)

He is a class act no doubt about it. I just worry about that city team as it is a minefield with all the rotation. Sanchez if he moves there or Gabriel Jesus I think will be the main men

As long as he isn't more expensive than 10.5 he's in my team. Expecting big things from him and although he's prone to the odd rest I think he's more assured of starts than Jesus and Sane with the plethora of options Pep has in the wide attacking positions. If Kun starts upfront that means Jesus, Sane, Bernardo Silva and Sterling are competing for two spots.

If there are no major changes to the pricing structure I'm planning on playing 352 but I'm still not convinced I'll find a space for him.

He's a wonderful player but at his price I want to be sure he'll play every week and City have so many options

Rachel Riley leaves Sky after the abuse she got from Spurs fans online. Yes saying Spurs bottled the title was a bit over the top but the abuse was really uncalled for. Football fans are such fanatic idiots.

  14. Recruits from Benfica
    ricardo_vaz

As a Benfica fan I'm going to offer my 2 cents on what to expect, football- and fantasy-wise, from big money signings Ederson (Man City) and Lindelof (Man Utd). I'm not a football nor fantasy expert, but I did watch every minute of their (short) tenures in Benfica's first team

    Ederson
History: Ederson was the understudy of "hall of famer" Júlio César in the 2015/16 season, until a last-minute injury threw into the spotlight in the crucial away game against Sporting. Benfica squeezed what I must admit was a very lucky 1-0 win, with a string of great saves from Ederson, helping Benfica take the lead in the title race and later claim it. Since then Ederson has been the indisputable no.1 goalkeeper, even supplanting Júlio César in the usual league and CL/cup rotation in advanced stages.

Football expectations: Ederson is a tall, imposing GK who looks tailor-made for Guardiola. He's very quick and alert in playing the sweeper-role, and his distribution is superb. Not only accurate, but also very long. Benfica caught out opponents on a number of occasions with goal-kicks that made it almost to the opposition goal (since there's no offside). In the title-clinching game he even had an assist (https://youtu.be/6CRuGEeQ9C0?t=59). And unlike Bravo, he's actually a very good shot-stopper. Just look up the highlights of Benfica's 1-0 win against Dortmund. He does have a lapse of concentration now and then, but if he overcomes the initial jitters I would say City's goal is in safe hands.

Fantasy expectations: He will be one of the best GK prospects, but is assured to cost at least 5.5M. With City's CS prospects far from ideal he's probably not worth the investment, even if he might have one or two assists and a bigger penchant for bonus points. Even for managers who like to have a premium GK (not my case), De Gea, Cech, Lloris and Courtois are safer options (assuming they are all equally priced)

    Lindelof
History: He also came into the first-team due to an injury crisis and never looked back. While he was surrounded by centre-halves with a higher pedigree, his place was never in doubt and he played 47 games this past season. He played with no problems on the left and right of centre-back pairings, although most of his games came on the left.

Football expectations: Lindelof looks like the type of defender Mourinho likes. Composed, aggressive and strong in the air. He was the centre-back who initiated attacks more often, but his distribution is nothing to write home about and he gave the ball away on occasion. I suspect he will be more conservative under Mourinho. Lindelof is also very strong in challenging opponents, in the air or on the ground, but sometimes gets distracted or ball watching. He was often guilty of losing track of his man or letting him run past. But this of course he will get better at, and I expect him to become a first-choice in the team at the latest in the 2nd half of the season. As an attacking prospect, I wouldn't expect much. He is generally a threat in corners, but doesn't have much to show for it. He scored 1 goal in the 15/16 season and another one this season, a superb direct free-kick. But there will be plenty ahead of him in the pecking order for direct free-kicks.

Fantasy expectations: I would stay away to be honest. The best case scenario is that FPL thinks Lindelof will be eased into the lineup and has him cost 0.5m less than the likes of Bailly and Smalling. He might then become a bargain if/when he establishes himself. But with plenty of competition, Mourinho's penchant for rotation and the fact that he's not really a proven star that may take a while. And even then, there might be better prospects in the United defence.

I think FPL should make Friday night matches count toward the prior game week.

    - It will add some random DGW flair to the game.
    - It would actually be kinder to casual players who only make time to fidget with their teams on the weekend and will likely miss Friday deadlines.

Manchester United sign 22 year old centre-back Victor Lindelof.
Is he the Manchester United nailed on defender we were searching for?

I don't think so - in fact I expected it. The timing is okay too - plenty time to get anew guy in and rebuild.

Previously the club lost Pochettino and Koeman. Following the same path, it would be a perfect stepping-stone for Tuchel before moving on to Arsenal. That would be a win all round.
