Moving Target

Moving Target – Jermain Defoe

Earlier today, Bournemouth confirmed their second summer signing following the addition of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, with Jermain Defoe joining the Cherries on a free transfer from Sunderland.

The 34-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract and will return to the club where he spent a loan spell during the 2000/01 season.

Speaking to their official website, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at being able to attract a player of Defoe’s quality back to the south coast:

“This a huge moment for the football club and another step in the right direction. We want to bring players here who can have a big impact on our continued rise, and we believe Jermain fits that as a natural, proven goal scorer.”

The History

Defoe began his youth career at Charlton Athletic at the age of 14, before moving onto West Ham United, where he made his professional debut in a League Cup tie against Walsall in September 2000, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.

He was then sent out on loan to then Second Division outfit Bournemouth, scoring 18 goals in 29 appearances, before being handed his Premier League debut against Middlesbrough in May 2001.

The 2001/02 season saw Defoe establish himself in the West Ham first-team, scoring 10 goals in 35 league outings.

Despite the Hammers relegation to the Championship in 2003, Defoe remained at Upton Park for six months before joining Tottenham Hotspur in February 2004 for a fee rising to £7 million.

He spent just under four years at White Hart Lane, scoring 43 goals in 139 appearances and then moved to Portsmouth for £7.5 million in January 2008.

Defoe’s spell at Fratton Park was short-lived though, with Spurs deciding to re-sign the striker a year later.

Although not always a regular starter, Defoe remained a consistent goalscorer for the north London outfit, netting 47 times in 135 appearances over a five-year spell, before deciding to join MLS side Toronto FC in January 2014.

He scored 11 goals in 19 matches, but the lure of a return to the Premier League proved too great, and he joined Sunderland a year later.

After a relatively slow start, Defoe totalled 30 goals and five assists in 70 appearances over two seasons with the Black Cats, although he couldn’t prevent them from suffering relegation last term.

Defoe represented England at U16, U18 and U21 levels before making his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Sweden in March 2004.

He has amassed 57 caps for his country, scoring 20 goals, and recently returned to the fold under current manager Gareth Southgate.

The Prospects

Having consistently scored goals throughout his career, Defoe’s outstanding predatory instincts should mean he is a success in his second stint at Bournemouth.

Upon confirmation of his move to the Vitality Stadium, the England international stated “the one thing I can guarantee is goals,” and based on his output for Sunderland; there is little to reason to doubt his word.

The Cherries began last season with Callum Wilson as their first-choice striker, but he succumbed to a second serious knee injury in as many seasons back in February.

Josh King – who had spent much of the first half of the season switching between playing out wide and taking up a support striker role – cemented a berth in the starting XI following Wilson’s injury, while Benik Afobe also forced his way into the XI.

Howe often switched between 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 systems during the second half of last season, with King and Afobe enjoying much success as a front pairing.

But given Defoe’s quality, he is expected to take over from Afobe as the central striker, with King set to either play alongside or just behind the veteran.

King was one of the huge success stories in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last term, particularly during the second half of the season, belying his starting price tag of just 5.5 to produce 16 goals and three assists.

The Norwegian international thrived as an “out of position” Fantasy asset, classified as a midfielder in FPL but invariably playing in a more advanced attacking role.

But with reclassification as a forward likely for 2017/18, Fantasy managers look set to be handed a dilemma.

Having started last season priced at 7.0 in FPL, and finishing the campaign as the fifth highest scoring forward with 166 points, Defoe is set to earn a price hike to between 7.5 and 8.0.

King will be expected to command a similar valuation when the game launches next month. However, with Defoe set to snatch spot-kick duties – having scored five for Sunderland – he looks to have the upper hand.

Assessing their underlying statistics, Defoe had the edge in terms of shots, averaging an attempt every 33.5 minutes, slightly superior to King (40.6).

Bearing in mind that King made numerous appearances on the flank during the opening months, his numbers remain impressive. Certainly, those outings in midfield help explain why he averaged a key pass every 90.70 minutes – significantly stronger than Defoe (166.1).

But we should consider that Defoe produced his statistics in a side that ranked joint-bottom for big chances (35), although notably, King boasted a superior goal conversion rate (23.9 to 15.2).

Bournemouth ranked seventh for both goals scored (55) and big chances (65) in 2016/17, so Defoe can perhaps expect an improved supply of chances at his new club.

He is surely set to rank among the leading mid-price forward options, although Bournemouth’s mixed opening schedule (wba, WAT, MCI, ars, BHA, eve) means that Fantasy managers may choose to sit back and assess the data before committing to the Cherries attack.

Regardless, the capture of Defoe looks a canny piece of business, and with Begovic and perhaps defender Nathan Ake also on board, the Cherries look to be building a squad capable of securing a second successive top 10 finish.

Defoe certainly looks primed for another fine season, but the battle with King to claim a place in our affections could be a debate that rages throughout the campaign.

Isn't today d-day in terms of the Perisic deal? If I'm not mistaken, Inter also have FFP rules to meet and need to generate some cash by the end of today/July?

You're right, but it looks like they can meet the demands without selling Perisic (or just pay the 7m fine instead of selling him cheap)

Disappointed with the Ake news. He's a great option for FPL again - but if this news had been 2 weeks later, he'd have been priced as a Chelsea bench warmer for 4.5m max. Now he's in real danger of hitting 5.0 or even 5.5m. Oh well.

Is it really a given that King will be classed as a striker now that Bournemouth have signed Defoe? Surely he'll play behind as an attacking mid in a 4231/4411 formation, no?

Just wanted to comment on the Bournemouth situation. I honestly think that they could be the surprise package this season. With the recent signings of Ake and Defoe to add to the already decent squad they have, I feel I might be loading up on 2 or maybe 3 Bournemouth players, at least for the first two games of the season.
Ake, Defoe, Charlie Daniels, Josh King and maybe a cheaper defender are all good options in my opinion and I don't think that any of them will cost the earth. They could be great squad enablers and even if they have City and Arsenal in GW 3 and 4 I still feel that our squads will benefit from having at least a couple of their players.
Add in that they have one of the best young managers in the game, I really do think they are building something special on the south coast.
My prediction for the coming season is that Howe takes Bournemouth to a top 8 finish. I've got a strong feeling that they will finish above the likes of Southampton, West Brom and Leicester, maybe even Everton.
Am I talking complete rubbish or do people agree with my thoughts.

I think it might go the other way and they might really struggle this year. They concede goals in blocks and that could be an issue, especially with the lack of a solid central midfield, and a lot depends on whether they get the Defoe of first half of last season or second half.

    3. bojack

If they can defend better then no reason a good top half finish isn't within reach.

I think three Cherries might be overdoing it, but I'm certainly tempted by at least one attacker for what I think will be an opening day win at the Hawthorns.

Remember they only had Ake for half a season. I think he will have improved loads for going back to Chelsea and training with them. He will solidify the defence and they will always score goals. Defoe will have loads more chances created for him so I see no reason why we won't see the first half of last seasons Defoe. I really do think they have a good chance to finish top 8.

They were atrocious defensively in too many games to be suddenly better than Sou, Wes B and Lei off the Begovic signing. (The Arsenal comeback being a good example). Whereas Wes B never let us have a sniff once they led.

Defoe is overrated imo as too many of his goals were pens.

Howe is nothing special as well. He did put out a decently prepared team in the 2nd half of the season at times though. The Man United game being a good example of this.

I'm only looking at Stanislas/Fraser/King or Daniels but only one player at a time. Not doubling up, tripling up is madness tbh

One thing to note about Ake's move to Bournemouth is that it may either faze out A.Smith as an option or like last time he could play as Right Winger and can present us an OOP.option.

    Francis - Cook - Ake - Daniels (Back 4)

Or other option could be even better 3 at the back with Smith and Daniels (oh wow) as Wingbacks

    Something like

    .......Francis - Cook - Ake
    Smith.................................. Daniels

Will be interesting to see. I am sure I willl have one Bournemouth defender in my team
    Most likely Daniels/Ake.

i'm in this boat too, depending on prices - only Kane seems to be premium striker not subject to rotation and central focus of team goal output, would like Jesus aswell as Pep seems to really favour him, but City have such a strong attacking line up that goals will be shared around (that being said i do expect them to be scoring a lot), other than that can't see many premium strikers worth the money, funds better spent in mid and hopefully enough left for 2/3 good defenders that i can keep through the season, eg Trippier/Kolasinac/Daniels/Valencia

I'm investing in defence more than previous seasons myself but choosing an all mid-price defence dilutes effectiveness and ability to change from 1 player to another in 1 transfer.

      Kompany 6 Valencia 6 Cedric 5

I'm considering 2 premiums who'll play every week they're available, 2 mid-price (5-5.5) who will both play if fixtures are good but one might drop to the bench, and a 4.5 playing backup. I'll switch between 3 and 4 at the back.

Lots of Nathan Ake talk, and rightly so - he's a real attacking threat, as all Bournemouth fantasy prospects seem to be - Ake, Cook, Daniels and Smith will all presumably be 5.0m or more as a result. Last season, after Ake broke into the team, he partnered Cook at centre back, with Daniels at left back, Simon Francis moved out to right back, and Adam Smith relegated to the bench.

If that's how they line up again next season, then funnily enough, I think the Ake transfer could have the biggest fantasy impact on... Simon Francis. He may well come in at 4.5m again, cheaper than the other Bournemouth options, given that the only attacking return he managed last season was a solitary assist in GW15. He's the captain, and has started every game he's been available for since their promotion - he played all 38 games in 15/16, and 34 last season, missing a couple due to a suspension, and a couple through injury.

Here's his record in the last two seasons at centre back and right back respectively:

CB: 46 Games, 0 Goals, 0 Assists, 0.17 Shots Per Game, 0.30 Chances Created Per Game
RB: 26 Games, 0 Goals, 5 Assists, 0.23 Shots Per Game, 1.54 Chances Created Per Game

Francis returned 1 goal and 8 assists in each of Bournemouth's three seasons prior to promotion, playing at right back. It's clear enough to see that at centre back, his attacking threat is non-existent. If he looks like starting at full back in pre-season, though, and comes in at 4.5m, I think he's a great prospect for any initial defensive rotations.

If Begovic and Francis are the only 4.5 Bou def then I think I favour Begovic. But for me I'm willing to spend more on attacking threat. Daniels did well for me last season. Ake did well for others. One of those two are my targets and I'm willing to pay more for them.

Bournemouth went from conceding the fifth fewest shots in 15/16 to the fifth most in 16/17, and so went from 2.3 saves per game to 3.2 last season. I'm interested to see whether or not they keep up that up for Begovic's prospects next season.

When teams become more expansive and attacking they invariably start to leak & concede more chances at the back. Opposite sides of the same coin.

It's an interesting one. Their shots and shots in the box stayed almost exactly the same from one season to the next, but they created significantly more big chances, and so scored more goals this season. That suggests they were just better going forward, rather than more attacking in their approach. I guess they may well have invited teams onto them more this season, and so created better chances on the break, though their possession stats stayed similar too.
