Great Expectations

Hindered by an ongoing hernia problem, Junior Stanislas was overshadowed by the exploits of free-scoring Bournemouth team-mate Josh King in the previous campaign.

Restricted to 21 appearances, the winger served up just 106 points – lagging some way behind King’s 178 points – and scored seven times last term.

But having found the net in each of the final three fixtures, the Cherries’ flier is shaping up as one to watch for 2017/18.

  • When fit, Stanislas was a regular on Eddie Howe’s teamsheet – 18 of his 21 outings arrived in the first XI. Frustratingly, his hernia injury meant that the winger failed to start more than five successive league matches but, having undergone surgery immediately after last season finished, he’s expected to be fully fit and raring to go for the campaign ahead.
  • King’s rise to prominence in the second half of 2016/17 will certainly earn the Norwegian a price hike to around 7.5 or more, whereas Stanislas will be backed to remain under the 6.0-mark. Furthermore, King could also be reclassified to a forward due to his switch up front in the final few months under Howe. Considering no other Bournemouth midfielder netted more than three times, Stanislas could emerge as a budget-friendly pick in the centre of the park.
  • When it came to points per match (ppm), Stanislas more than held his own against King and, indeed, bettered him by 5.1 to 4.9. That average was inferior to only seven regular midfielders and on a par with big hitters such as Mesut Ozil, Roberto Firmino and Son Heung-min. Although a 21-point haul against Hull City in Gameweek 8 was the undoubted highlight of his season, the Cherries’ winger is more consistent than you’d perhaps expect – although he managed 90 minutes on just six occasions, he produced a goal or assist in 10 of his 18 starts.
  • In addition to his seven goals, Stanislas also chipped in with six assists and essentially played a part in 50% of his side’s goals when on the pitch – up significantly from 31.3% in 2015/16. That was also more than King’s 46.2% involvement and matched only by Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson among FPL midfielders with a minimum of 10 starts. With the prolific Jermain Defoe added to the Cherries forward line, the Stanislas supply line could be vital for the Cherries and profitable for Fantasy managers.
  • Although his minutes per chance created dropped over the two seasons – down from 43.6 to 67.1 – the statistics indicate that Stanislas’ eye for goal has benefitted from a more single-minded approach. Indeed, both his shot accuracy (from 20.5% to 44.2%) and goal conversion (from 6.8% to 16.3%) more than doubled when compared with 2015/16. As a result, his minutes per goal quickened from 480 to 210.9 in the previous campaign.
  • Bournemouth proved a reliable source of attacking returns last term, placing seventh for both goals (55) and big chances (64). By and large, the Cherries’ attack was fairly fixture-proof – they netted at least three times in separate matches against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton. That could help them, and Stanislas, prevail over a tricky opening to 2017/18 that hands them clashes with West Brom, Manchester City, Arsenal, Everton and Spurs in the first eight Gameweeks. On the upside, visits from Watford, Brighton and Leicester heighten their early-season potential.

No doubt Stan will be an interesting option, though it comes down to trust. He stung me last season and I was lucky that, when I opted for him over Phillips, the Baggies man also faded and picked up an injury.

So the question will be whether it was the hernia that troubled him and, if so, does it mean that he's first choice for Eddie Howe next term? King's role and future could be key, of course.

If Stan looks like he's getting regular starts and and gets a 5.5 price tag or even 6.0 as we mention here, he's got to be a fourth/fifth mid option, particularly if Bournemouth take that next step up next season.

Burnt horribly by him but he could be a great option, especially with Defoe up front to finish the chances he creates.

If he's s cheap price then a great option for 5 ine middle

Stanislas and King have been two differentials of mine for two years now. Last season only one of them turned into a point scoring machine, though.

I think, for me, it'll really come down to whether King will be classified as a MF or FW and also how high his ownership will be.

Thing is, at last Stanislas has found a manager who believes in him, Frank.

He has always had the talent. 🙂

Might happen but I think there's more about him than that. He worked with what he had in LaLiga. He has more talent at hand at Southampton and will add to it, too.

They will be defensive for sure and the challenge will be for him to extract goals but he should have and get more resources.

He will rotate as much as needed. EL cannot be a priority unless league is lost, and Arsenal bench should be good enough to qualify from EL group.

Yes don't disagree. It's the latter stages of EL that becomes tricky with injuries and fixture congestion.

But they're only interested in that if they are failing the PL. If they lead the PL, that will remain secondary for them, for sure.

What a lot of people don't realize, more than games, it's games and demoralizing losses that can affect you. Losing 5-1, 10-2 on aggregate in the CL holds potential to derail you in a different competition like the league, if you don't have a very strong squad and that's been happening year after year. Not to say it can't happen in the EL, but the likelihood is lower.

Sorry but I'm just not getting this 'we're in the Europa so the league will be a doddle talk'... quite the opposite I'd have thought even allowing for a friendly rotation policy by Wenger. He can't pick a complete B squad and they'll be paying Thursday night ... a major disruption to weekend prep.

I think they still could use one more high-end CB, since Kos will probably not have a full season in him anymore, and maybe a RB who can defend.

But assume they sold all the fringe players and those who live at infirmary - Perez, Debuchy, Jenks, Gibbs, Walcott, etc. Are Wilshere and Per still there? Them too. That would free space under salary cap to keep the whole of the first squad intact.

        Cech
        Bellerin-Mustafi-Kos-Kola
        ------Xhaka-Cazorla
        Mahrez-----Özil------Sanchez
        -----------Lacazette

On bench the likes of Ramsey, Ox, Giroud, Coquelin, Monreal, Holding, Welbs. And add another RB and backup GK still. Imo, also sell Gabriel and get a better defender, not a backup but a starter.

EL is not a commitment. For rich-ass top clubs like the PL big-6, it's not a burden, but a blessing. It's a way to give your bench players a run, keep them happy and see if there's anybody who could help your first squad (remember when Spurs started Kane in EL, Soldado in PL, and then turned that pecking order around when they saw who was better?).

Easier said than done it does now have that added incentive of straight back into the cl and would be a first european trophy for wenger. I see him going balls out for it and it will take its toll.

Out of that lot, only Kos and Mustafi have the level, and Kos is carrying an injury. Holding is a good backup, but he shouldn't be a starter. They need someone who doesn't just make the numbers, but is an actual top level international CB.

I must admit these recent news about "done/nearly done" signings have got me worried a little bit. I was fairly relaxed that Arsenal were going to retain Sanchez or were easily frontrunners to retain him for another season, but if Arsenal spend big money to buy Lacazette (what's it with c's and z's, thought Szczesny was enough) and Mahrez and possibly someone else too, then it could be enough to convince Wenger that he has adequately replaced Sanchez.

It was dismissed by everybody who said it but the danger of VAR is that you simply move the contentious decision.

At the end of the day video technology can only work for black and white decisions like goal line decisions and not opinion based decisions....
