Scout Report – Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have tonight confirmed their second signing of the summer transfer window, with the big-money acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette from Olympique Lyonnais.

Having already acquired wing-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke, Arsene Wenger has added the in-demand Frenchman to his attack for what is thought to be a club record fee of £46.5 million.

Wenger was understandably delighted to have finally got his man:

“We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher. As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth system, Lacazette made his debut for the club’s senior side in May 2010.

Mainly utilised as a winger for the next three seasons, the Frenchman flitted in and out of the first XI, producing just eight goals and six assists in 69 Ligue 1 outings, with 27 of those arriving off the bench.

However, Lacazette’s career took a turn for the better in the summer of 2013 after the-then cash-strapped Lyon were forced to sell their main striker, Lisandro Lopez.

Shifted into a centre-forward role, he never looked back. Utilised either as part of a front two or as a lone striker, the Gunners new boy has racked up an eye-catching 91 goals and 16 assists in 133 league appearances across the last four seasons, with a career-high 28 strikes last time out.

On the international stage, Lacazette represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21, scoring 19 times in 58 appearances.

The 26-year-old has since turned out on 11 occasions for the senior side, scoring his first – and only – international goal against Denmark in 2015.

The Prospects

As witnessed last season, Wenger seemed undecided over the lone striker role. The Gunners boss began with Alexis Sanchez up front before alternating Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck in the latter stages of 2016/17.

Lacazette looks likely to be the answer. Standing five foot nine, he’s certainly not a like-for-like replacement for Giroud – he won just 36% of his aerial duels last season (Giroud registered 55.7%) and scored twice from headers.

Instead, the new boy’s pace, work-rate and ability to run the channels will allow Arsenal to press from the front more efficiently – tellingly, Lacazette registered 31 successful tackles last term, more than any forward in the Premier League.

Considering that Giroud and Welbeck started 11 and eight league matches respectively in the previous campaign, Lacazette’s style of play, allied with that hefty price tag, certainly suggests that he’s set to command a regular role for the north London outfit.

From a Fantasy perspective, his potential from the spot could elevate the Frenchman in the Arsenal pecking order. He scored 11 penalties in all competitions last season and has netted 23 of 28 attempts across his career.

Looking at the new arrival’s goal conversion rate since being utilised through the middle from 2013/14 onwards, figures of 17.8%, 28.1%, 22.1% and last year’s 33.3% highlight his predatory nature.

To put that into perspective, Lacazette’s rate in 2016/17 bettered all regular starting strikers in the Premier League.

Indeed, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus – heralded as a similarly clinical finisher – produced his seven goals from 10 appearances and 24 attempts – a conversion rate of 29.2.

Lacazette goes to the trouble of explaining his ruthless finishing in his first Arsenal interview this evening.

“Every time I take a shot at goal it’s because I believe I can score. I don’t just shoot for the sake of it. I always try to choose the best option, whether that is to pass or to shoot. I also try to keep as calm as possible. All that is achieved by a lot of hard work in training.”

It’s worth noting that, while he produced just three assists in 2016/17, Lacazette created a chance for team-mates every 47.2 minutes. Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney – as the most creative FPL forward last season – topped the ranks with a rate of 45.3. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Diego Costa, who ended the season with 11 Fantasy assists (7 in Opta), produced a key pass every 73.5 minutes.

Of course, for all his impressive numbers, these were recorded in a different environment. It remains to be seen just how quickly Lacazette’s adapts to his new surrounds and the rigours of the Premier League.

Likely to be priced around 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League, Lacazette should benefit from Arsenal’s lack of Champions League matches, allowing Wenger to rest his main men for domestic duties as he eyes up a bid for the title.

Yet the future of Alexis Sanchez may ultimately determine how we assess the Gunners next season. If last term’s top-scoring FPL player chooses to stay and is again listed as a midfielder, his proven ability as a Fantasy asset could be difficult to ignore from the outset at least, allowing us time to assess Lacazette’s contribution.

Indeed, the Frenchman’s ability to press from the front could allow Sanchez and Mesut Ozil more freedom in the central support roles should Wenger keep the 3-4-2-1 formation. Having scored in each of his final two appearances, including the FA Cup winner against Chelsea, Aaron Ramsey could be another name in the mix next time out.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that the new boy’s chances of hitting the ground running have been boosted by a kind opening schedule. Arsenal offer home clashes with Leicester City, Bournemouth, West Brom and Brighton in addition to a trip to Stoke City in the first seven Gameweeks.

That early run could provide the catalyst for goals and points. It could even tempt Fantasy managers to overlook Harry Kane of Spurs and Jesus as the weapons of choice in attack.

Happy summer everyone. I can't think of anything worthwhile to say as I haven't looked at fixtures and rotation is big myth.
Enjoy your time off work or college or whatever.

      Same to you RCA.
I have not given fpl much thought yet myself. Not much point really until we have player prices and some of the transfers are finalized.

Pereyra could be the one under Marco Silva. Definitely on my watchlist.

Good chance I'll start with Zaha as my 4th mid. Huddersfield and Swansea in their first two home games looks tasty.

If Pereyra's fit I think he's nailed whether they sign or Grosicki or not. Grosicki could be the better pick depending on their respective prices but Pereyra's the better player.

I like your bravery going for mkhi and Ayew, I think they'll have better seasons too, and although neither are nailed, they have so much quality.
Sané, Cedric and Kane are all essential personally. Salah is a good shout, being that he's surely nailed (?) and cheaper than the other pool mids. And tekkers and Defoe work really well as a compromise to balance the funds.

Hope they tweak the scoring a little, else it will be rather unfair in say a 16 man league for someone at the end of the spectrum...

If he plays most matches, Aguero. Don't think anyone else can. To beat Kane you need to be taking penalties, so it pretty much comes down to the list of penalty takers.

"If" is key here. Kun might share gametime with Jesus, whereas there is no viable backup to Kane.

I was answering the bit about other contenders. No one is denying Kane is the overwhelming favorite. Also, contrary to popular opinion, I think the jury is still out on Jesus. He's Pep's signing, so like Bravo, he'll get a million chances, but there is still the possibility that he will underwhelm and could be prone to rotation like Sterling. I just fancy Aguero to be one of the first names in City sides this season.

Prefer to pick only one player from a country, so Kane/Alli are likely to be English players.

It is not that simple, things like position scarcity need to be considered, other factors such as injury proneness and likelyhood of leaving before season end etc all have to be taken into account.

Aguero would likely be One of the top Seven in price but he would be a very risky first round pick, his injury and rotation record are both not good, I would certainly skip him in favour of some lower priced options.
It is not like fpl where you can just transfer him out

        1. Urchin

          6 years, 9 months ago

Sure, I get that point, but if the scoring system is same as the current FPL game, I will not risk losing him before GW1 for example. I am sure there will be a limited number of trades that one can do.
That is my main concern that a similar scoring system will seriously make it a very small pool of players to pick from, a lot of 2 pointers around will take from the 'uniqueness' of teams....

This is true. Let us imagine a Ten play league with 15 picks each. That is 150 players that finish up being owned. The rest go to the Waiver wire.
There are probably only around Seventy players tops that are actually Fantasy relevant, the rest are as you say 2,2,2,2,2,2,2

Last season it is quite possible the likes of Capoue and Allen could have begun the season on waivers so it would not be a total desert, but pretty thin none the less.

However, if they changed the scoring system to allow blocks, tackles etc then it could lead to a very healthy waiver wire with many as yet unknown decent options

              6 years, 9 months ago

Yes, if passing accuracy and tackles are awarded points, then I might go with someone like Herrera or Kante as my first pick...players from even smaller clubs become relevant...
Lets hope the game makers think just like us,
              cheers!!

Can only give my experience. Each manager has a budget say 100m. The managers in turn pick a player [not always who they want] and all the managers bid on the player auction style until someone wins. The squad is built using this method or another method where you simply take it in turns to pick a player. Auction is more fun but tricky on line I'd imagine so the latter method more likely. There is no dual ownership so if you don't win the bid for Kane you can have a few stressful weekends as I did last year! Rules vary regarding transfers, not sure how fpl doing it.

      1. FC Lackless [BALEGIUM]
        • 7 Years

Sorry, to clarify second method ...managers simply pick a player in turn [snake draft] and he's in your squad. This does not require a budget I wouldn't have thought. Still need to keep to a set formation and there will be a limit on players from any one club...we only allowed two.

      RP from earlier post:

A draft is a process used in some countries and sports(in our case fantasy) to allocate certain players to teams (ofc fantasy teams). In a draft, teams (managers) take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract (fantasy contract), and no other team (manager) in the league may sign the player.

Sourced from Wiki page for Draft (sports). Just inserted relevant fantasy terms in the bracket, rest is verbatim.

presumably a team for each format....drafts are ideal for mini leagues. If they allow each mini league to customise some rules that would be fantastic. Not sure how they would incorporate all the mini draft leagues in an overall leader board though... I'm sure it could be done but if so they would need to keep all the rules for each mini league the same....no customisation

My only experience with draft fantasy football is dugout FC - which I like a lot.

Key parts I like are that passing/ tackling etc get pts - which means some fodder DMs like mark Noble can do well.

Another is that the initial draft includes the option to draw from a pre arranged list should you not be able to make draft night - that ensured I had a good team last season with hazard and Firmino among others - despite missing draft night.

The lack of prices is good too - I hope draft fpl has that.

Best of all is the ability to make constant changes - if a player looks a dud you can move him out. This means you have to be canny by getting great diffs from the chaff that is left. In our mods and contribs lg last yr that element was really popular as we sought to get new and emerging players first.

I've been doing it two yrs and I'll admit the first yr it took me awhile to get used to it.

But last yr I got it - the search for diffs is partic good - bit like doing the fantasy island risk on the scoutcast.

That's good and bad - I like the no price restriction but with fpl scoring there will be too many players earning nothing. Dugout addresses that and fpl need to as well I think.

It's a different format so requires different scoring I think.

I don't think you need different scoring - for sure scores will be much lower and you may find yourself drafting players because they'll start and pick up 2 points

If you have a 10 strong lg then it won't be much fun having a chunk of your team scoring 2 pts and no prospect of ever getting more.

May make me opt for small leagues of around five managers - that'd be v competitive.

Traditionally (until Giroud) Arsenal always had great strikers for fpl. Ten million sounds reasonable, as long as he not a lemon, which seems unlikely

What I might do is get Kane and another striker on the same price point or 0.5m more than Lacazette. That way if he starts hot it's just 1FT to get him in.

I hope the fpl draft league is purely for setting up mini leagues ...otherwise [if they have a main leader table] the format is set up for dodgy dealing.

Ritchie could be a good pick. A great deal of our attacking play goes through him, good set piece taker, likes to shoot etc. Apart from him and maybe a center-back there's nobody else i'd recommend since either we're gonna sign a load of players and every other position will be up for grabs, or we won't get the players we need and we may not be worth investing in.

Forget Morata and play Mkhi behind Lukaku with Pogba.

Lukaku is a client of agent Mino Raiola, who also looks after Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan - three players all signed by United last summer.

Hope Utd sign Lukaku. Got a bet on Utd to win the league and think he and Matic are the final pieces in the jigsaw.

Lukaku will have the same impact on the team as Ibra. Yes, he scores goals but everything has to go through him.

I want Giroud, Klaasen and Siggy rather than Kaku and Barkley. I will be so happy if Kaku goes to Man U and Everton make some money on Rooney shirt selling.

Yeah probably. It's just it seems like Jose's after a left-footed forward. Griezmann seemed like his main target. To me that sounds like he wanted to use an inside forward. But I dunno.

If Arsenal don't make any more signings, who is backup for Sanchez and Ozil's positions? For instance, if Ozil gets injured, who would slot into that position?

    - Wilshere?
    - Ramsey moving forward and CM/Ox slot into Ramsey's place?
    - Ox/Walcott/Welbeck
    - Change formation back to 4231 or more spread attack with 433

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Oops posted too early, but you get the idea.

Do Arsenal need another attacking signing? There still have those promising players, but is it time to sell them to Liverpool, or back to Southampton?

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

        - Another option might be to bring Lacazette back into a support role for Giroud

    2. Andy_Social

It's a shame Santi's out. As you say, who Wenger's got is Walcott, Welback, Ox and Wilshere. None of them are really at the required level, so he'd want to use the Sanchez money to upgrade. Remember Mahrez is supposed to be on the radar.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

My dream would be to sell Ozil and get Willian tbh. Or just to get Willian without selling Ozil! Mahrez is exciting, but I'm.not sold on him at Arsenal yet. I always liked Wilshere and believed he could be fit for replacing Cazorla or Ozil by now, but I'm not sure about that anymore either haha. It's almost a shame that Ozil's taking the slot of other players who could've ended up proving more valuable to the team.

      I would play this:

      Cech
      Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
      Bellerin Xhaka Elneny Kolasanic
      Ozil Sanchez
      Lacazette

      Ospina
      Holding Gabriel Chambers
      Debuchey Coquelin Ramsay Gibbs
      Iwobi Perez
      Welbeck

I would offload Szczesny, Mertesacker, Wilshere, Ox, Jenkinson and Walcott.

Still think Arsenal need to sign a defensive CM to play next to Xhaka and drop Elneny into the second team and sell Coquelin.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Oh jeez I genuinely though Perez had gone already. Well maybe he would be a good Ozil backup? He's not looked bad to the fan in the stand, but perhaps Wenger has a deeper issue with him.
