Scout Report – Roque Mesa

Swansea City confirmed their third new addition this summer with the signing of Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa for £11 million.

The 28-year-old midfielder inked a four-year deal with the Swans and revealed that head coach Paul Clement was one of the key factors behind his decision to join the Welsh side:

“One of the main reasons I had to be here was that the manager wanted me – that’s a great incentive. I felt I needed a new experience and challenge. The manager knows me, he knows how I play and what I can contribute to the team. I’ll try to make the team play.”

The History

Mesa started out at as a youth player at Levante and made his senior debut for the reserves during the 2007/08 season.

He then took in brief spells at lower league sides Huracan and Tenerife B before linking up with Las Palmas reserves in 2010.

The midfielder moved to the first-team squad a year later, but it was only during the 2014/15 season when his career really began to take off.

He was a crucial member of the Las Palmas side that gained promotion to La Liga, producing four goals and three assists in 35 league outings.

Mesa earned plenty of plaudits for his performances in La Liga last season, with several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Sevilla and Liverpool, reportedly among those interested in the Spaniard.

He has racked up 69 appearances in the Spanish top flight, registering two goals and five assists, playing predominantly either as a defensive midfielder or in the middle of the park.

The Prospects

As Mesa’s position and output suggests, the Spaniard is unlikely to himself be a factor in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but his addition should play a major role in boosting the stock of both Swansea defenders and attackers.

His strengths centre around his passing, ball-winning ability and impressive stamina levels which allow him to cover every blade of grass, helping the tenacious midfielder to be compared to Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.

Last season, only Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi recorded more forward passes in La Liga than Mesa, while since the start of the 2015/16 season, the 28-year-old has recovered possession more times than any other outfield player in the Spanish top flight.

Bearing in mind the quality of midfield players in Spain, Mesa certainly looks set to dramatically improve things for Swansea in that area of the pitch.

Leon Britton was a key figure for the Swans during the run-in last season as the Welsh club narrowly avoided relegation, but at 34, he can’t be relied upon to play week in, week out.

Mesa may well take over from the Swans skipper in the defensive midfield role then, although he could also operate either on the right of the midfield diamond favoured by Clement during the tail end of last season, or as part of a three-man midfield in a 4-3-3 system.

Tom Carroll, Leroy Fer, Ki Sung-Young and Jay Fulton are the other players battling for spots in the Swansea midfield, although Ki will miss the start of the season due to a knee injury.

One of the main beneficiaries of Mesa’s deep-lying playmaking should be Gylfi Sigurdsson, providing he remains at the Liberty Stadium amid mounting interest from Everton and Leicester City.

Jonathan Viera occupied a similar role to Sigurdsson for Las Palmas last term, and with Mesa working his magic from a deeper position, that allowed Viera to flourish in the more advanced areas, finishing third in La Liga for chances created with 81.

Sigurdsson himself produced 72 key passes last term, with that number likely to increase playing alongside Mesa, who boasted a passing accuracy of 91.2% in 2017/18.

Mesa’s lack of attacking threat means he is likely to come in at around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and bearing in mind he has also picked up 26 yellow cards over the past two seasons, he is unlikely to enter our thoughts as a viable budget option.

Sky Sports have introduced him as a 7.6 option, a good 1.0 more than Britton and 0.7 more than Cork.

But passing bonus could yet see Mesa justify that price tag, with the Spaniard likely to trip the tier one threshold for bonus points for 60 completed passes.

Britton and Cork managed this just twice each last season, averaging 35.8 and 40.5 completed passes per match respectively.

In contrast, Mesa averaged a formidable 64.7 completed passes per appearance in La Liga. However, it remains to be seen if his tika-taka style can immediately impose itself in the Premier League. If he can translate those figures to English football, his Sky Sports bonus potential will be strong.

Indeed, having lost their identity over recent seasons, the addition of Mesa is a giant stride towards the Swans returning to a possession-based gameplan, with the Spaniard the new heartbeat of the side.

Only six teams had less possession than Swansea (45.1%) following the arrival of Clement, compared to 58.6% during their maiden Premier League campaign back in 2011/12 under Brendan Rodgers, when only two sides managed more.

Mesa’s ability to sniff out danger in front of the back four may also be a contributing factor in boosting the Swans’ clean sheet potential.

That could be something worth considering given their very favourable run of home fixtures (MUN, NEW, WAT, HUD, LEI, BHA, BOU) over the opening months of the season and their home rotation pairing with West Brom.

Providing the Swans can keep hold of Sigurdsson and Alfie Mawson, the pair could prosper from Mesa’s range of talents in midfield and emerge as leading mid-price options.

As for Mesa himself, his all-action industry is only likely to be of use in daily Fantasy games where greater emphasis is placed on rewarding passing, tackles and recoveries.

Mane and he gets more points for goals. This is the reason for the likely price difference. Are you wondering if Firmino is a bargain? Because I don't think he is given the reasonably low priced midfield alternatives

Mane is a more direct goal threw, Firmino's game often revolves more around creating space and pulling defenders out of position.

Ours or yours? Personally he's a real contender for my team. Hopefully not everyone agrees. I may not get him if I spend money elsewhere though. He's not competing only with defenders but with players in all positions. So too early to say

        Pogba mid mid mid mid

        1 of Jesus/Kun/Lacazette

Seems strange to make decisions based on similar pricing. You could end up with both Kane and Lukaku or both Laca and Jesus. It depends on the other players. Just wait it out

I like the look of southampton's fixs & new mgmt - Cedric or Bertrand first name on my defence. PVA next assuming he starts under FDB. after that i'm interested in Baines ( but poor fixs), utd defs (shaw in particular if only 5.0 or 5.5), JEvans, Mawson, and yes definitely Milner, even for pens alone he would be great fun to own.

Anyone else thinking that Kane may not do as well next season with home games at wembley? Think some are getting carried away with his finish to last season. Understandably if you were an owner. I have reservations especially at 13 million

Kane has been consistently high scoring for 2 seasons now. With Alli and Erikson behind him, he is guaranteed to get loads of goals. Going without may be a season-destroying mistake in my opinion

I think the only time you can afford not to have Kane is if either he is injured, or Spurs are not scoring goals. If spurs are scoring and he is on the pitch, he'll be involved in everything again.

Though Salah could quickly rise if he does well.

Not really considering Firmino at the moment. I'm not bothered about tripling up in general but Salah probably isn't worth the risk at 9.0

I've basically used the rationale that pacy players who also have other qualities usually do well in the prem to justify taking the risk with Salah, other well priced options may dissuade me though. Could be beautiful if he replicates his Roma form.

How so? Look at the goalscoring records. Drogbas saving grace is that he scored in finals and big matches. Costa has also stepped up in big games more often than not.

Drogbas record is poor considering the Chelsea sides he played in.

                  Kun .67 (122 in 181)

He had 54 assists with his 104 goals, don't overlook that. He wasn't prolific throughout, but he did the business when we needed him, and much more charismatic. The man stopped a civil war.
172 wins and 30 losses with him in the team. His hold up play alone won many games.

2 seasons that Costa never got near to emulating.. if you're talking who was the better striker for Chelsea goals per game ratios or whatever other stat tells only a small part of the story.. Drogba lead Chelsea to twice as many league titles four times as many FA cups and 3 times as many League cups as Costa.. throw a CL on top and it isn't even a debate at all really

There seems to be a mouthwatering choice of big hitters up front.

To afford them, you need to make savings elsewhere.

Is anyone considering replacing mid price midfielders with premium wing back defenders?

Similar PPG in many cases and saves between £1m to £3m per player.

Chimes well with Firetog's community article about the merits of 4 or 5 at the back.

Could you ever play 4 or 5 at the back, Jonty? I can't see you doing it this season if you plan to go back to your dullard ways. It would make for an interesting scoutcast episode if you did, though.

If the four at the back involves Milner it simply couldn't get more dullard 😉

But yes - last season taught us to be flexible . It was 3-5-2 in 16/17... with more expensive strikers available then 4-3-3 could be needed.

Other problem is defenders are the positions we rotate based on fixtures, even more premium ones (though I feel like I do this more than most), while mids we don't, so you can't take the points average in a vacuum

Firmino really underrated around these parts. 11 goals, 11 assists...not too shabby. Add Mane and Salah racing down the flanks, can see Firmino getting on the end of a couple of low crosses like Kun and Jesus did this season.

Coutinho is the one I'm worried about, with him dropping deep.

Firmino ruined my season. I wouldn't advise getting him. It's a horrible experience. Even when he finally got a brace, it was a hollow victory.

Firmino doesn't really carry out a proper striker role though does he? He doesn't really get on the end of crosses, but creates space for the wingers to run into? Correct me if I'm wrong. And Coutinho should be grand playing deep. 3 goals and 1 assist playing at CM at the end of the season. He's not a natural winger anyway. He can definitely prosper there.

...I don't think I said they are alike. I just believe that Kun played a similar role this season and still had the attacking awareness to grab some goals from late runs in, and I hope Firmino does the same.

Right, and Firmino is more of a natural false nine than Aguero is, yet Aguero still managed to perform the role well enough that Pep was impressed, and he managed to grab a load of goals.

I think I'm going to avoid Spurs attacking players as I think that champions league will take its toll on their squad and injuries will effect performances, also they are not linked with any major transfers and their squad isn't the biggest, I personally think they will struggle to get top four. Wembley may also effect their points tally but at the same time ali is at a very good price so it's a tricky one

    1. UshFPL

The bottom line is that they had the best attack in the league last season and their attackers often scored double-figures points. It's a huge risk to go without that.

That may well be what they intended.
Testing has probably taken a little longer than expected, so they've filled in the extra time with additional reveals.
I would be very surprised if it doesn't launch tomorrow - the twittersphere have been very disappointed and impatient, to say the least, that it didn't launch today.

It's very variable. Usually in the morning or afternoon, has been known to launch in the evening.
One of these seasons it might even be at 4am.

Yeah...except that Sanè is an 8.5M midfielder who's not going to start every game because he'll be subject to rotation with Sterling and Bernardo Silva.

Sanchez and KdB will destroy the rest of the team

It's a fair compromise + Pep likes Sane on that left wing. Sterling dodgier than Sane

So we now know the prices of 27 FPL players for next season, but how many of those are you expecting to be in your squad for GW1 ?

Alli's the only near certainty for me, although i'm also considering Heaton, Milner, Salah, Knockaert, Klassen, King and Jesus (who would have been a certainty at 10m or less), but I need to see the rest of the prices and preseason form before making a decision on them.

Pogba looks the most likely for me. Weighing up Alli, Coutinho and Sane but depends on the rest of the prices and pre-season. Not sure if I want to double up on Spurs attack at the start, not sure if I want a Liverpool mid with those CL qualifiers in there.

He looked good in the final games, hit the post a few times and Ibra was missing sitters as well.

Worth a punt with those fixtures and a CDM looking likely to join

Those fixtures are good, i'm planning to cover them with Kaku rather than a player who's point per game average wasn't even in the top 12 at United last season !

Personally i'm thinking Alli and Kaku over Kane and Pogba.
