Scout Notes – Pre-Season

A James Milner penalty gets Liverpool’s pre-season up and running, Tom Ince bags a debut goal for Huddersfield, while Gylfi Sigurdsson seemingly edges closer to a move away from Swansea after opting out of the club’s US tour.

Here’s a round-up of yesterday’s action….

Tranmere Rovers 0 Liverpool 4

One of the upcoming Fantasy Premier League campaign’s more anticipated events – a James Milner penalty – helped kick-start Liverpool’s pre-season with some style.

The former England international netted seven times from the spot last year while playing as a left-back, only for his FPL designation as a midfielder to severely hamper his appeal.

His reclassification as a defender for 2017/18 has already prompted 10.5% of us early adopters to pay 6.5 for his services, with penalties a major factor in that purchase, and Milner duly delivered to set the Reds on the way to a convincing win at Prenton Park.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was without four of his key attackers, with new signing Mohamed Salah missing out due to work-permit issues and Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana all unavailable as they work on their fitness levels.

The Reds’ boss welcomed back skipper Jordan Henderson, though, who made his first appearance since February after finally recovering from a heel problem.

Klopp used a 4-3-3 system throughout, starting the match with Daniel Sturridge up front, flanked by Sheyi Ojo and another reclassified man, Roberto Firmino, who has gone from midfielder to striker for this year’s game.

Ojo provided the assists for both of Liverpool’s first-half goals, the second a fine long-range effort from Marko Grujic.

Klopp made ten changes at the break, among them a first outing for new signing Dominic Solanke, who took over from Sturridge in the central striker role.

Further goals followed from Pedro Chirivella, who was set up by Solanke, and Ben Woodburn, who converted from the spot late on after being brought down.

Speaking post-match, Klopp praised ‘long-term project’ Solanke before hinting that more signings were in the pipeline.

“We cannot only buy players because other teams buy players—we do our business as well as we can do it and we are completely in it. We are convinced about the way we are going, so that’s all. I’m not nervous, maybe that’s the right message.”

Liverpool are in action again tomorrow, at Wigan Athletic.

Liverpool XI First half: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lucas, Milner; Henderson, Grujic, Wijnaldum; Ojo, Firmino, Sturridge.

Liverpool XI Second half: Karius (Grabara 67); Clyne, Gomez, Klavan, Flanagan; Stewart, Chirivella, Woodburn; Markovic, Kent, Solanke.

Subs not used: Randall.

Young Boys Bern 2 Stoke City 2 (Stoke win 4-3 on penalties)

Veteran campaigner Charlie Adam sparked a second-half comeback from two goals down for Stoke City in their pre-season Uhrencup encounter with Bern.

The midfielder scored from the penalty spot and then set up Marc Muniesa’s equaliser, before Peter Crouch registered the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out that followed the 2-2 draw.

Potters boss Mark Hughes again opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation in which Thibaud Verlinden and Julien Ngoy provided the width, with Bojan operating behind central striker Saido Berahino.

Hughes then handed new signings Josh Tymon and Darren Fletcher pitch-time after the break, with Jakob Haugaard, Crouch, Muniesa and Dom Telford also introduced.

Speaking after the match, Hughes confirmed that the club have made an offer to take Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma (priced at a lofty 5.5 in FPL) on loan for the season.

“There is genuine interest. We’d like to make it happen if we can. The boy himself has to make a decision. We are one of many interested parties but we’re very hopeful. We’re still doing a number of deals.”

Stoke City XI: Grant (Haugaard 46); Johnson (Edwards 67), Shawcross (Souttar 67), Wollscheid (Muniesa 46), Pieters (Shenton 70); Adam (Fletcher 67), Imbula (Sweeney 67); Ngoy (Telford 46), Bojan (Campbell 70), Verlinden (Tymon 46); Berahino (Crouch 46).

Sub not used: Jarvis.

Accrington Stanley 0 Huddersfield Town 1

New boy Tom Ince was the man for Huddersfield boss David Wagner at the Wham Stadium.

The young gun, bought from Derby County, was given the chance to go for it after the break and duly delivered the only goal. Intriguingly, Ince was also handed a share of free-kicks upon his second-half introduction – priced at 6.0 in FPL, he’s clearly one to monitor in the mid-price bracket after serving up 14 goals and six assists for the Rams last time out.

Wagner used most of his new signings in the first half. Goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, defenders Mathias Jorgensen and Scott Malone, midfielder Danny Williams and striker Steve Mounie all started at Accrington.

Ince and former Montpellier striker Laurent Depoitre were introduced at half-time, while Tommy Smith (foot), Jon Stankovic (knee), Michael Hefele (achilles), Collin Quaner (ankle) and Australian international midfielder Aaron Mooy, who is still on holiday after playing in the Confederations Cup, all missed out.

Huddersfield Town XI First Half: Lossl; Malone, Schindler, Jorgensen, Scannell; Billing, Williams; Lolley, Payne, Kachunga; Mounie.

Huddersfield Town XI Second half: Coleman; Lowe, Hudson (Palmer 74),Whitehead, Cranie; Hogg, Bunn; van La Parra, Wells, Ince; Depoitre.

Barnet 1 Swansea City 0

Swansea City not only lost their opening friendly, they now face the possibility of losing their star midfielder, Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has opted against travelling on their US tour.

Earlier this morning, the club confirmed:

“Having played v Barnet last night, Gylfi did not feel in the right frame of mind to travel due to the current uncertainty over his future.

Coach Paul Clement handed the Icelander the captaincy upon his introduction after the break and also got his first look at new signings Erwin Mulder and Roque Mesa.

Oliver McBurnie started up front as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, though in the second-half, Swansea reverted to the midfield diamond system that saw them see out the previous season.

Winger Jefferson Montero returned to contention after recovering from a hamstring problem, while Clement issued an injury update ahead of the club’s US tour, with Fernando Llorente set to miss out due to a fractured arm:

“Nathan (Dyer) is still on the road to recovery. Normally the rehabilitation period for the type of injury he had is nine months. If that’s the case this time, he will not be fit until October. But Nathan is coming with us to America because unlike Fernando Llorente, he can run and is mobile. We have just got to be careful that we don’t push him too quickly because you can re-rupture those injuries and then you are starting from zero again. Apart from Nathan, everyone who is travelling will be able to train and play.”

One of Swansea’s key performers last season, defender Alfie Mawson, has now joined up with the squad having been given extra time off following his exertions for England at the European U21 championships.

Swansea City First half: Mulder; Rangel, van der Hoorn, Fernandez, Roberts; Fulton, Carroll; Montero, Routledge, Barrow; McBurnie.

Swansea City Second half: Mulder; Roberts (Olsson 70), Bartley, Keston Davies, Naughton; King (Mesa 70), Grimes, Sigurdsson, Fer; Ayew, Narsingh.

SK Slavia Prague 2 West Bromwich Albion 1

Summer signing Jay Rodriguez made his West Brom debut, playing in the number 10 role behind striker Salomon Rondon for the first 45 minutes of the defeat to Prague.

Chris Brunt – reclassified as a midfielder this season in FPL – started at left-back, with Craig Dawson stationed at centre-half as Gareth McAuley missed out through injury.

The Baggies led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a James McClean goal after 26 minutes, with the assist coming from Matt Phillips, but a totally new side took the field after the break and promptly succumbed to defeat.

Free agent Jason Lowe, on trial at right-back, was among the wholesale changes made by Tony Pulis, while McAuley – along with another injured player, James Morrison – rewarded the 30 or so Baggies fans who had travelled to the training camp in Austria by watching the match with them.

West Brom XI First half: Foster; Nyom, Evans, Dawson, Brunt; Yacob; McClean, Livermore, Rodriguez, Phillips; Rondon.

West Brom XI Second half: Myhill, Lowe, Wilson, O’Shea, Melbourne; McManaman, Harper, Field, Leko; Robson-Kanu; Roberts.

  7. Top Six Attack Coverage
    Enzo the Baker
    • 10 Years
    6 years, 9 months ago

Assuming you'd want to cover attack from the top 6, what would be your order of priority from each team ? For me it is :

    Arsenal
    1. Lacazette : Friday kickoff and price rise, being fed by Ozil and Alexis, maybe on penalties
    2. Alexis : Its FPL legend Alexis, but high price, unlikely to captain in first few weeks, scores lower on the wing
    3. Ramsey : 3-4-3 favors him, GB's stat tables shared by Jonty shows that he is "due"

    Chelsea
    1. Willian : Going to take up creative burden from Hazard, set pieces, great price
    2. Pedro : Will start first few games, but more expensive than Willian

    Liverpool
    1. Firmino : 8.5 is a good price for him as 3rd striker, compared to Benteke & Defoe
    2. Mane : Capable of goals and is settled into his role at Pool
    3. Coutinho : 9.0 seems fair but will play deeper in the new formation?

    Man City
    1. KdB : Confusion between Jesus and Aguero roles could mean that KdB is a safe bet. Great end to last season.
    2. Jesus : Pep's favorite, excellent PPG, better price than Kun
    3. Kun : Its FPL legend Kun, but price is a bit steep and he didn't have a great FPL season last year by his standards

    Man Utd :
    1. Lukaku : Bought by Utd to finish all the chances they create, the main man up top, ridiculously high ownership
    2. Pogba : Good price, needs a DM signing to truly set him free, GB's stat tables shared by Jonty shows that he is "due"

    Spurs
    1. Alli : Good price, plays as second striker, great FPL returns last 2 years, higher ownership than Kane
    2. Kane : Steep price (as expected), traditionally starts slow, but on penalties and is explosive, will you captain him first two weeks ?
    3. Eriksen : Good price, not really explosive, one for the long haul

So that gives a front 6 of :

    Alli KdB Willian
    Lukaku Lacazette Firmino

What do you think ? Could make a decent 4-3-3 team with these 6 and a decent defense of : Luiz, Trippier, Daniels, Cedric, Foster

Chelsea will most likely play 3-4-3 like last season, with Willian and Pedro either side of the striker and either Matic, Bakayoko or Fab partnering Kante in the midfield

Yeah Fabregas is less nailed on than Willian & Pedro IMO, depends on the kind of opposition. Vs. Spurs in GW2 i guess Fabregas will be benched for Bakayoko / Matic (if he's still at Chelsea)

Would rate Sane high for Man City as I would call him the most individual in the squad.

KDB and the Silvas are fairly similar in what they do and Jesus could compete with Aguero or Sterling for places in attack or wide right.

Assuming City don't sign Mbappe or Sanchez, Sane looks fairly nailed down the left for me.

          Arsenal - agree
          Chelsea - other way around
Pool - Milner if no lb signs ahead of Mane, firmino not an option at all
          City - 2/3 ahead of 1
United - agree, though a defender also nr 1.
          Spurs - don't even care

Interesting that you think Firmino is not an option at all .. I guess if you have 2 out of Lukaku/Kane/Laca/ManCity strikers, then the third spot will have to be Defoe/Benteke/Firmino.

Wouldn't you rather get Firmino ?

              I'm on Luk-Lac-Kun.
But if I change to 2 big guns up top I will get a cheapy as 3rd.
Mane(and perhaps Salah) will be further forward than Firm as a false 9 and now Firm gets less points. As a mid he was interesting, not as a forward imo.

Agreeing that Firmino isn't a great option, was already 3rd best of the Liverpool mids last year and now loses a point for goals and cleans, not to mention if Klopp wants to play Origi or Sturridge then he's playing reverse OOP.

I'd personally rather play 2 up top and try and find funds for Mané / Cout in midfield, or go without Liverpool completely.

He was the 7th overall scoring mid.

Nice analysis. Not taking into account teething troubles for new signings though. That is my big concern going lac/luk and I don't see many considering this angle.

I am considering a 4-3-3 myself. Tried and trusted players with perhaps 1 new signing to start gw 1. Most likely lukaku. WC in gw 4 for sure.

Agreed that Lacazette in the EPL is an unknown quantity, and I left out Salah from the list for the same reason. Lukaku on the other hand is less risky, he knows the PL, and I think his entry will be similar to Ibra's good start like last season.

Totally agree on WC in first few weeks

Agree on Lukaku being the best bet, hopefully fits in at United easily. But I am a bit concerned the United pressure will affect his output.

Smart on Salah. Too many have 5/6 new signings in their drafts (could get worse).

Don't think it will take time to adjust to Klopp's tactics? It's not just about the premier league, it's about expecting every new signing to hit the ground running for a new club.

I would have included Ozil for the Gunners. Could approach 20 assists this year feeding Lacazette. Alexis may be a legend, but with all the other mids, I have omitted him from my squad in favor of a stronger set of forwards.

Looks good to me, I'm a fan of the RLC - TC cheap combo in mid that lets you do great things to your team. And can also move between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 if required

cheers Enzo, yeah they look good and it keeps things flexible - going to attempt to leave money ITB and save the first FT too which should set me off well. Unless Newcastle look terrible, that defence looks good enough imo.

I'm sure we'll get a better idea of nailed on 4.5s in defense closer to GW1, but for now your front 8 is good and the blueprint for your backline is solid

I actually think Alonso is the best chelsea attacking coverage, with the added bonus of clean sheet points.

That's a very interesting point - Alonso might offer a similar threat to Willian going forward, at the same price, might even be on some set pieces - all with extra points for CS and freeing up a midfield slot.

You can cover the top 6 in 3-4-3 and have a good defence:

          Foster
          Lindelof Trippier Cedric
          Alli Pogba Willian Ramsey
          Lukaku Jesus Firmino
          (Myhill, RLC, Francis, Naughton)

Fair enough, it comes down to :

            A. Jesus Ramsey Pogba
            or
            B. KdB Lacazette RLC

Your choice of A does look stronger if Ramsey can come close to matching Lacazette

Looks like a solid starting line-up. Defence included the only repeats in my team right now are Lukaku, Foster and Trippier which just goes to show that fpl towers did a good job with the prices imo!

I've noticed that no one seems to consider Son as a Spurs option. Is this because of his injury, rotation risk or simply because he's out-classed by his teammates? He looks like great potential value to me at 8.0, arguably being a player out of position, very dangerous and clearly taking the starting spot over Lamela. If it wasn't for his injury he'd be in my team alongside Kane.

Why is no one including Sanchez? I'd rather spend the extra 1.5 instead of Lacazette. Mainly because he is proven to be a powerhouse, selfish (good for fantasy), Laca drops deep often to get ball, and he gets an extra point for goals and clean sheets compared with a FW. Thoughts?

My real dilemma is the 3rd premium slot (after locking in Kane and Lukaku):

        Sanchez

                      Lindelof / Kola / Cedric / Yedlin / Rangel
                      Sane / Redmond / Ritchie / Phillips / RLC
                      Laca / Kane / Kaku

It's made for the first 5 GWs in which the cheap mids have decent fixtures. Risky, but going with those 3 guys up front could pay off amazingly.

I'm with you but that horrific midfield actually proves him point about the 65.5!!! Yuck!

Sane = Great way into Man City's attack, good finisher

Ritchie = On pens, FKs, corners

Phillips = On corners, and WBA score a lot of headers

Redmond = The gamble - needs to improve his finishing, but fixtures may be too good to turn down

                              RLC = Bench fodder

You're justifying too much there! RLC could out score them all.

The best thing you can say is that Sane is a good finisher and he might not get many chances with incredible rotation there.

                                Good luck though!

Just put together a starting squad featuring all 3 players. All the defenders are 4.5 starters and one 4.0. Midfield bit of a mixed bag, but...just an idea this early.

With treble wba, treble spurs, double united and double swansea (albeit there both bench fodder) will the lack of arsenal / liverpool cover cost me?

                        Tough one:

                        A) Alli + Aguero
                        B) Sane + Kane

A is better and gives you more points as Kane is a slow starter.

I'm tempted by Rooney, know they dont have a great start, but then I look at it and think, I can play an extra df, put Milner in and save a mill in process - and will prob end up with similar pointage
