Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Debut goals for Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette and Everton’s Wayne Rooney help their new clubs to pre-season wins, while the proposed move of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Goodison Park gathers pace.

Here’s the notes from yesterday’s action.

Sydney FC 0 Arsenal 2

Record signing Alexandre Lacazette marked his Arsenal debut with a goal as the Gunners strolled to victory in Sydney.

The French striker coolly converted Alex Iwobi’s pass after coming on for Danny Welbeck, who had earlier had a penalty saved.

Skipper Per Mertesacker opened the scoring with an early strike in a match dominated by Arsenal, with teenager Reiss Nelson catching the eye at right wing-back in his first senior start for the club.

Significantly, Arsene Wenger stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation he adopted towards the end of last season, providing further confirmation that this system will be retained.

It meant that another summer recruit, Sead Kolasinac, made his debut on the left of the three-man defence.

The Bosnian international made a number of defensive interceptions and surging forward runs, underlining his suitability to replace Nacho Monreal in that role.

Indeed, Kolasinac’s versatility means that we cannot be certain on Wenger’s plans. While he boasts a stronger end product than Nacho Monreal at wing-back, his strength may yet see him push for a berth in the back three with the Spaniard retained out wide.

It was Lacazette who grabbed the headlines, doing enough in his brief time on the pitch to please the 26.4% of Fantasy managers who have splashed out 10.5 on the striker, with Arsenal’s generous opening schedule (at home at least) helping to justify the outlay.

Handing Lacazeete a central support berth behind fellow sub Olivier Giroud, Wenger was certainly happy with his new man’s debut goal.

“It is important for him to get that (first goal) off his shoulders because you expect to score if you are a striker.”

Arsenal have taken a 25-man squad on their tour of Australia and China, but Alexis Sanchez is not in it. He and Shkodran Mustafi have been given extra time off after the Confederations Cup, with the Chilean still consistently linked with a move away from north London.

Jack Wilshere, the injured Gabriel, Kieran Gibbs, Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson and Wojciech Szczesny have all also been left at home.

Arsenal XI:Cech (Martinez 46); Bielik (Nketiah 68), Mertesacker (Naitland-Miles 68), Kolasinac (Monreal 68); Coquelin (Xhaka 68), Willock (Elneny 68); Nelson (Oxlade-Chamberlain 68), Ozil (Iwobi 68), Walcott (Giroud 68), Bramall (Malen 68); Welbeck (Lacazette 68).

Gor Mahia FC 1 Everton 2

Wayne Rooney’s first start of his second spell at Everton was lit up by a superb long-range strike in Africa.

The forward’s 7.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has persuaded 17.5% of managers to put him in their early team squads, with his potential for mid-price value seemingly trumping the Toffees’ brutal start to the campaign. Everton faces daunting trips to Chelsea and both Manchester sides, as well as a visit from Spurs, before September is done.

Ademola Lookman, playing out wide as part of a 4-3-2-1 formation, set up Rooney with some smart work on the left and the former Manchester United man, employed as a lone striker, lashed home from outside the area.

Manager Ronald Koeman handed new signing Davy Klaasen his debut, the Dutch international forming a midfield trio with James McCarthy and Morgan Schneiderlin, while Aaron Lennon started on the opposite flank to Lookman.

But that midfield looks almost certain to change again, with reports in the local media suggesting it is only a matter of time before Everton sign Swansea City talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Icelander did not travel with the club as they set off on their US tour, and Swans coach Paul Clement seems resigned to losing their star man.

“We had that situation with Jack Cork. In the summer there was no thought of moving Jack on but it got to a point when another club came in with a really good offer. That might end up being the case with Gylfi. We don’t know yet.”

Koeman changed the entire team for the second half, with new signing Michael Keane coming into the heart of the defence alongside Mo Besic, as Kieran Dowell netted the winner from a Tom Davies pass.

Notably, Jonjoe Kenny claimed the right-back berth for the Toffees in the first-hallf, with Matt Pennington replacing him at the break. Mason Holgate was not included the squad following his England U21 exertions.

New arrivals Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez have also been given extended time off and did not travel to Tanzania, while Ross Barkley – who is injured with a groin problem – was also left at home as a move away from Goodison continues to be on the cards.

Everton XI First half: Stekelenburg; Kenny, Williams, Jagielka, Connolly; Schneiderlin, McCarthy, Klaassen; Lennon, Lookman; Rooney.

Everton XI Second half:Hewelt; Pennington, Baines, Keane, Besic; Barry, Gana, Davies; Dowell, Mirallas; Calvert-Lewin.

I've had him in my GW1 line up the last 3 seasons and he's disappointed. I said not again.

Then I saw his price. He's in!

Then I saw his fixtures. He's out!

Then I saw his goal. He's in!

      Now I'm not sure...

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your Frontlines so far

Who are your three strikers and are you planning on going three top top or just two?

Has anyone got a powerhouse frontline of Kane, Lukaku and one of Lacazette/Aguero/Jesus? If so what sacrifices have you made and what state is your midfield in?

What of Defoe, Firmino or even Rooney (aged 55 according to the above pic 😉 ) in the mid price price range?

Ben Crabtree won with no Liverpool cover last season at all. They are not essential with so many other options. Will monitor liverpool though.

Sanchez is a wait and see to see whether Lacazette can score more than him at 1.5 less. Also will Sanchez be an Arsenal player. Also will he start all guns blazing after Confed cup exertions. Also Arsenal's fixtures are ok - but not up there with ManUtd's. If I got Sanchez Kane would be the player to sacrifice - but do I really want to do that - maybe....will know after a few GWKs.

Wouldnt like no Alli/Eriksen and no Liverpool mid.

Sacrifices have to be made of course to own Kane and Kaku.

I've got Lukaku, Lacazette and Abraham.

Of all the cheaper strikers, I think he's the most likely to start promisingly and at £5.5m, pick up a little price boost.

Also allows me to have Alli, Sane and Pogba in midfield, along with 2 elite defenders.

Got good money tied up in all positions to switch/downgrade to any bandwagons.

Wouldn't have gone there if not promised game time. Think he still would prioritise starting every week in the Championship over being a Premier League back up. Also had firm offers from Newcastle and Brighton apparently, so sure he will be a regular starter.

27 goals last season and can only improve. Got 74 in 98 the previous season for Chelsea youth.

Clearly knows where the goal is and can't see any others in the £5.5m bracket potentially reaching double figures for goals.

For me in terms of captaincy options Kane and Lukaku are nailed on. Defoe just seems the right fit at 8.0 as a third striker....as said on the scoutcast I think its a quagmire of rubbish below him currently until the Southampton striker situation is resolved, Gayle can prove himself in the top flight and Deeney can show consistency.

Rooney for me is a no-no due to his advancing age, lack of speed and awful fixtures - will re gather my Rooney thoughts when Everton's fixtures pick up.

Partly because its really hard to judge which Liverpool midfielder (which is what Firmino still is in reality) will score.

Could be Coutinho, Could be Mane. I'm waiting to see if one emerges, if at all.

Also Firmino's play is less about people assisting him - its about him making space for the wide men and central midfield to bomb forward and score. He will likely be the assister. But if he does score - he gets less points than his colleagues.

Plus Defoe is nailed on, up front, proven goal scorer playing for an attacking side and is also 0.5 cheaper.

Defoe has the edge for me.

You talked about rooney's age. But defoe at 35 may drop off. Yes firmino makes space and yes he is a false nine but he is still main man between them. Good luck. I'm going with kane kun lacazette

It was more because he looks so old in that pic.

Fixtures is the main reason. Also managers of Defoe always go on about his fitness level - he's a clean living guy and also one of the most lethal strikers the PL has ever seen.

Rooney relied on quick turn and really is a number 10...he's never really been an exceptional CF. His lack of pace does hinder his game - but I will reconsider after those awful fixtures have passed.

Agree and will assess pre season.

Of all my picks Sane is the most vulnerable.

Key is being flexible...my current picks will not be my final picks as plenty changes - and then what I have in GWK 1 will change through transfers.

No two seasons are the same - but if there's one rule from last season that I will carry over it is to be open minded about formation and players. I was guilty of not doing that often enough for the first half of the season.

King, Afobe, Wilson, Defoe almost 35 if Im correct.

Imo it remains to be seen if Defoe starts every single game or not. Not 100% sure. How will the loss of little Bradley really affect his game is another question.

Gabbiadini and JRod are punts (been burnt by Gabbi last season, new manager, and Jay's fitness ok the long run quite uncertain), but considering their price and early fixtures I might favour one of them as my third striker. Or Gayle.

Currently on Jesus and Lukaku but hate not owning Kane so... still many uncertainties as far as I'm concerned.

Also not convinced Lukaku will start as strong as everybody thinks. Williams+Keane and Huth+Maguire are solid defensive pairs who might be able to deal with him.

Rosenior will get minutes and the odd game - but not a starter.

Ryan is a PL unknown but looks promising. Dunk for me could be the bonus guy. Duffy has goal threat - strong header at set pieces - but didn't score much - Brighton fans feel he has goals in him though - those two are the key ones currently. Dunk my pick.

I can't see past Kane and Kaku as the two I build my team around, Jonty. Kane is because of FOMO (fear of missing out) - not owning him would require a mahusive sofa to hide behind, if if I covered with Alli. Kaku because of United's fixtures and the GW1 game against WHU, whom he loves scoring against; he has scored more against them (9) than any other side in his Premier League career.

I have been looking at the option of the big three, with RLC playing the Capoue role and starting as my 4th midfielder. The BIG issue with this is that if RLC does not play or perhaps does not start, he will need to be shifted straight away as his price will drop quickly given the high ownership he has attracted (15.2% atm, pretty high for a 4.5).

I think there's no room at the inn for Kun currently, though, so I'd have Lacazette if I did have the 3rd big striker. If not, I'd default to Defoe I think.

The rest of my side reads:

      Foster
      Trippier Tomkins Cedric
      Pogba, Zaha Ramsey Willian

      Subs: Elliot Rangel Lascelles Carroll

Not the strongest of benches but sacrifices have to be made if you are going for a power 3 up front. First 11 will probably be tweaked but, barring injuries, I cant see me altering my front 3.

Yeah, I like this, too. Provides for a key high-priced slot in midfield, and includes high scoring players from several high scoring teams (well, at least one potential high scoring guy in Lacazette).

Was on Lukaku Defoe Gayle, but after downgrading Zaha to Cheek, it became possible to have Lukaku Lacazette Gayle.
I dont't think I'll go big 3 upfront as it requires huge sacrifices in the rest of the team

      Kane Lukaku Aguero

      Which gives a midfield of
      Pogba Pedro RLC Zaha

Might swap Zaha with Ramsey and Pedro to Willian. I just feel that Zaha is such an important part of the Palace attack, and with those fixtures...

      Foster, Begovic
      Tripper, Lidelof, mustafi , 4.5 (4.5)
      Pogb,a Alli, RLC, (Carrol, 4.5)

Kane, Lukaku and Gayle for now.

I like the balance of having a budget forward in the 6.5m bracket, so Gayle is more or less just a place holder for me now until someone else emerges. Not that fond of Gayle personally.. 😕

      I've gone Defoe, Kane, Lukaku

      Rest of the team:

      Foster, Fabianski

      Trippier, Lindelof, Cedric, Dunk, Mee

De Bruyne, Ramsey, Pogba, Loftus-Cheek and T Carroll

Two 4.5 in midfield is the sacrifice but I feel there is more than enough fire power there for it to not be an issue.

A power front Three looks very doable. Can cover City, Tottenham and United from the front.
Then pick up the value picks in midfield such as Zaha, Ramsey,Redmond/Tadic! Fabregas/willian. No need to spend much in midfield as all the above mentioned have decent fixtures to last tilla wildcard. Gw 3 Can draft in Lanzini or suchlike.

tThe power Three upfront also require no monitoring so can concentrate on making money on the mids, as that where most bandwagonss appear

I like this. Although if a prem mid emerges as a must have surgery could be needed...also will be hard to ditch one of those front three.

I'm minded to move to that prem front three but prefer to wait and see a couple of gwks at least. also if our plan to stock up on 7m mids backfires we could be out of pocket.

I like seeking value in mid - but also like having one a little higher - ideally I'd like a 9m mid as well as Defoe.

I am waiting to see what happens with the southwmpton strikers, would be tempted by a nailed on Austin if h looked sharp pre season. If none of them appeal will go with a big frontline, but it really far too early to say. Still a whole month to go

I've gone with Kane and Lukaku for the obvious reasons and 3rd striker is Defoe because he's a goalscorer and in a much better team than Sunderland this season. Really don't feel like I can spend more on the strike force without hampering the midfield

I've got Lukaku, Kane and Charlie Austin.

Not sure how nailed on Austin is but I'm wildcarding after GW3 and Soton fixtures too good to ignore, reckon he could even score from the bench.

Also part of me toying with the idea of going with Jesus instead of Lukaku as I've got a funny feeling Lukaku might be an expensive flop, but I'm worried about the owenership if he don't.

Team is a bit of a mess atm. Have Kane, Lukaku and Deeney who I will probably get rid of. I think playing with 3 heavy hitters really leaves your team unbalanced. I am toying with the idea of a 442 with Cedric, Lindelof, Milner and Dawson at the back as I really like their opening fixtures. I think KDB will emerge as a good pick because of uncertainty at the front with Kun and Jesus. Finally although he is a FPL legend I'm kinda hoping that Sanchez leaves the league as it is already very hard picking a team I like with so many high priced heavy hitters around.

Lukaku Defoe Benteke allows me a midfield of KDB Alli Willian Ramsey and a decent defence, and 2 ITB which I'm happy with, as I can use the 2 mil and a downgrade elsewhere to fund Benteke to any premium big hitter that gets off to a good start.

The value/season of 3 big forwards will always be mediocre and will always keep a manager's team only up to an average success. To go further up into 1% or 0.1% of the managers, I feel it necessary to go for 2 names, play 3-5-2 and go for a cheap 3rd striker I feel obliged to make the correct choice of 2 in the forward but Lukaku plus Kane plus another big name would be bound to fail in my view. (I could not even set up a decent team with Lukaku+Kane anyway).

Alli Willian Redmond Stanislas - RLC
      Lukaku Jesus Lacazette

      Lacazette is the only one I'm not really sure of;
chose him over Coutinho so I can analyse the liverpool points distribution after a couple of games. I will probably leave the structure like this (players might change) and reassess after two weeks and possibly restructure the team.
chose him over Sanchez so I could invest more in my backline (Milner Cédric Lindelöf - 4,5 - 4)

I've gone Lukaku and Lacazette as my big guns. I'm hopeful that the bromance between Lukaku snd Pogba will provide good returns for both on the pitch. Currently with Firmino in the third slot. Covering Spurs with Alli until the Wembley effect is better understood and Kane has warmed up a bit. I expect to bring him in with WC1. L-C, Ritchie and Redmond are in the cheap seats at present.

I had a big front three Jonty but working on the basis/odds that we will all need to tweak more or less straight away for gw2, then maybe a balanced team makes more sense with just two big hitters, downgrade to Defoe [or Benteke with nice home fixtures], and the difference spent in midfield. Also Firmino is in and out of my side as a third striker option too .. I just can't figure out if he's a good pick or not.

Opting for a 352 at the minute. Looking at which teams were scoring goals at the end of last season I think Bournemouth look a great shout, so at the minute it's King and Kane, but will have a careful eye on what happens in pre-season around Defoe and King. Allows me to have Alexis, Coutinho, Alli, and Sane (and Mooy) in midfield. Plenty of coverage for the day one fear and plenty of ticking off of teams scoring highly at the end of last season. Not seeing a lot of love for King, his stats still look decent for a forward, anyone any good evidence to contrary?

I have doubts about Lukaku, United didn't score well at all last year on the whole, not a humongous amount has changed, feel like he might end up just being another Ibra, ticking along with 1/2 a week without being very explosive. Just that Mourinho factor, he doesn't tend to decimate teams. I'll have my eyes closed that entire United game day one though...

After deep analize:) I will go with the Big Bang three Kane/Lukaku/Lacazette. Midfield Willian KDB Tadić RLC and Oriol Romeu. Defence Lindelof, Clyne, Dawson Lascelles and bench fodder. Only sacirfice I made relates to Pool players. However if Sane will be nailed for MCI I may go with him instead of KDB and try top find room for Coutinho

Kane Jesus Firmino. Had Defoe but have talked myself up.

Mid is Pogba, Pedro, Sane, Redmond. I'm considering Willian too in order to get Ramsey but Redmond has a decent three fixtures to kick off with.

The 1.0m saved having Jesus is handy elsewhere. I'm not 100% convinced on Lukaku at Utd but Jesus looks good value to me. He served me well last back end. Plays and scores simple as that.

I'm going with a Power 3 for damn sure, but I just had a breakthrough: I might drop Kane. We will not captain him in the first two weeks...and then maybe BRN in GW3 and SWA in GW5. There are other C options in GW3 too, so if we don't captain Kane until GW5 then we can get Laca and Kun/Jesus alongside Lukaku.

I'm starting out with a frontline of Aguero, Lukaku and Firmino to make the most of Liverpools opening fixtures. I plan to bring Kane in in week 3 if Spurs and Kane show signs of avoiding their slow start. I'll end up with a 4-3-3 with James Ward-Prowse as a 3rd mid, but I'm fine with that.

      Cedric - Yoshida - Tomkins - Mee - Rosenior
      Ozil - Pogba - Redmond - RLC - Chalobah

I think Lukaku is needed, then pick Kane or Alli, Lacazette or Sanchez/Ramsey, and watch preseason for ManCity minutes.

Southampton strikers need monitoring, Rooney could be a good shout for the beginning (good first game, not tired yet). I'm looking at Deeney and Defoe is an option.

Currently I'm on Lukaku Kane Lacazette with either no 8.0m+ midfielder or RLC and Carroll

I like Sane as it allows greater flex elsewhere, Atimis. Jesus' output was fantastic in the games he was on the field - ridiculous points per game, ~7.5, - but the Kun factor is a bit worrisome. Sane is pretty decent - despite only figuring in 26 matches, he managed 5 goals and 7 assists last term, with 105 points scored: his ppg works out at 4.04, meaning a potential output of 154 points (top 30 overall, and top 20 midfielders last year)

All good points but I'd rather pay 1m more for Pedro and get all that and more.

Think they are off my list (including Roonpig.com) until GW6. The turn is pretty damn cool, with suddenly BOU BUR bha their next 3. Payoff for awful start. Definitely thinking of GW6 wildcard.

I'm with you mate. This may be a case of "let me Google that for you" but I have a feeling that the international break is always in GW6... is this correct? in that case Evertonians incoming on a WC I fancy.

Possibly a few too many punts there but can't argue with that frontline.

You can save money in defence by ditching DDG and going for a cheaper gk - Ryan/Fabianski or even cheaper Myhill - if Foster gets injured he'll play.

      Dunk - great call! 🙂

I'd reconsider Herrera and Silva perhaps. Both not nailed...also the former offers patchy returns.

With the possible departure of Kyle Walker,
will Trippier emerge as the bargain of the season?

    1) He plays in a wing-back role but is priced 5.5. Compared to other WBs, he is the cheapest.

    2) He plays for a top team with good headers and finishers. Plenty of Clean Sheets and definitely some assists too. He had 5 assists in the few matches he had played.

Last year Walker was 5.5 at the start and many missed out on him. This time, Trippier seems not to be missed out on. Your thoughts?

I want to be brave and gamble 10.5 on Jesus but he only got starts when City had nothing left to play for and everyone else was pretty much burnt out from a long season and if I recall correctly, he was on the wing.

Someone convince me he's worth getting. I keep thinking Silva arrival makes it even less likely he starts now too. 10.5 seems a lot for this risk.

How will the City attack line up?

      You're so wrong...
City was in the race for 3rd position to avoid UCL qualification phase. He was on the wing 2 times from 8 starts (2 last games of the season). He scored and assist in each of these games.
When he played more than 15 minutes last season: 7 games, 7 goals, 4 assists, 0 blanks.
I suppose you're trying to find an excuse to buy Lacazette over Jesus 😉
