Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Mohamed Salah marks his Liverpool debut with a goal, but Brighton’s main man Anthony Knockaert is injured as the pre-season schedule gathers pace.

Elsewhere, a Dwight Gayle double does the trick for Newcastle United, and Jonathan Walters opens his account for Burnley.

Here’s the run-down on last night’s action.

Wigan Athletic 1 Liverpool 1

Mohamed Salah scored on his Liverpool debut as more members of the Reds’ potent midfield were given their first pre-season outing at Wigan Athletic.

The summer signing from Roma, who has already tempted 11.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers to invest in him, struck on the stroke of half-time when he converted a Roberto Firmino pass.

Manager Jurgen Klopp fielded Salah, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana in an attacking first-half team set up in a 4-3-3, with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet also handed his first start as the Reds upped their preparations for the new campaign.

Liverpool’s shape was difficult to assess, with Klopp clearly allowing for fluidity in his formation. Georginio Wijnaldum appeared to take up the number six role as a deep lying midfielder, with Ben Woodburn and Lallana also dropping alongside him at times. Roberto Firmino played as the central attacker, although he swapped with Salah throughout the first period.

A completely different side took to the pitch of a second half that even Klopp was forced to admit was ‘a little bit boring, to be honest’.

Of rather more interest to Fantasy managers were local reports that Liverpool, as well as upping their bid for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, are in advanced talks with Hull City over the signing of left-back Andy Robertson.

Should Robertson make the move, the 10.5%-owned James Milner’s place at left-back will no longer be assured, particularly as Klopp will have to rotate his squad to cope with the demands of Champions League football. Milner would, however, be expected to retain a starting role initially.

Liverpool XI First half: Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Klavan, Flanagan; Wijnaldum, Lallana, Woodburn; Salah, Coutinho, Firmino.

Liverpool XI Second half: Karius; Gomez, Stewart, Lovren, Milner; Henderson, Grujic, Chirivella; Solanke, Sturridge, Origi.

Brighton And Hove Albion 2 Fortuna Dusseldorf 0

Star man Anthony Knockaert lasted only ten minutes of Brighton’s first pre-season match.

The 8.5%-owned midfielder limped off after receiving treatment to an injury sustained in a heavy tackle and later left the ground on crutches, his leg encased in a protective boot.

Hughton confirmed post-match that the Frenchman had suffered an ankle injury.

“It’s too early to tell at the moment. He’s a little bit sore and got some swelling on his ankle. We’ve had incidents in the past with Anthony where we thought it was going to be bad, but he’s always made good recoveries. We hope it’s the same with this one, but we certainly won’t know anything about the injury for another couple of days.”

Should Knockaert be out for a lengthy spell, it will be a bitter blow for manager Chris Hughton, who will have to start the Seagulls’ top-flight campaign without the Championship player of the year.

The injury overshadowed a 2-0 win for Brighton, with two late goals in as many minutes from Jamie Murphy and Tomer Hemed securing the victory.

Scots winger Murphy cut inside to open the scoring in the 77th minute before Hemed doubled the lead, the Israeli striker scoring from an Oliver Norwood cross.

Hughton used a 4-4-1-1 formation throughout, handing new signing Markus Suttner his first start at left-back, while defender Connor Goldson made his first appearance since heart surgery in the second-half team.

Fellow new boy Mat Ryan didn’t figure – the Australian keeper has been given extra time to recover from his participation in the Confederations Cup.

Brighton XI First half: Maenpaa; Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Suttner; Knockaert (LuaLua 10), Stephens, Kayal, March; Gross; Murray.

Brighton XI Second half: Maenpaa; Rosenior, Goldson, Huenemeier, Bong; Murphy, Sidwell, Norwood, Skalak; Towell; Hemed.

Shamrock Rovers 0 Burnley 4

All three of Burnley’s summer signings started the match in Dublin, with veteran Jonathan Walters marking his debut with an early goal.

The Republic of Ireland international scored after just nine minutes, having been put through by fellow new boy Jack Cork, in a team that also featured former Leeds United full-back Charlie Taylor.

Walters was then substituted after just 33 minutes, although to date there has been no explanation as to why, as Burnley had to wait for three second-half goals to confirm their superiority.

Ashley Barnes made it two, curling home after collecting a Matthew Lowton long ball, before Robbie Brady hit the third following good work by Stephen Ward.

Sam Vokes, the 6.0-priced striker who finished last year in fine form on the way to a ten-goal season haul, rounded off the scoring, albeit in fortuitous fashion.

The Welsh international attempted to duck out of the way of a Jeff Hendrick half-volley, only for the ball to hit him on the back and go in off the bar.

Burnley XI First half: Heaton; Darikwa, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Defour, Cork; O’Neill, Gudmundsson, Walters (Agyei 34); Gray.

Burnley XI Second half: Pope; Lowton, Anderson, K Long, Ward; Ulvestad (Agyei 78), Westwood, Hendrick, Brady; Vokes, Barnes (C Long 85).

Heart of Midlothian 1 Newcastle 2

Dwight Gayle started pre-season where he left off in the Championship, grabbing both goals in a fine first-half display at Tynecastle.

The striker was the Magpies’ top scorer last season, hitting 23 goals from 26 starts, and his brace will have pleased the 11.8% of Fantasy managers who have currently made him their cut-price third forward.

New signing Florian Lejeune was given a run-out in defence for the second half by coach Rafa Benitez, but it was a returning midfielder who caught the eye.

Siem De Jong was back at the club following a loan spell with PSV Eindhoven, and he picked out Gayle with a fine pass for the first goal, part of a fine performance that suggested the Dutchman has a point to prove to Benitez.

De Jong played the No 10 role in a 4-4-1-1 formation from Benitez.

Jonjo Shelvey provided the assist for the Magpies’ second, picking out Gayle with his corner kick.

Matt Ritchie, who played a key role in leading Newcastle to the Championship title, played no part as he continues to recover from a groin operation back in April, while defender DeAndre Yedlin did not feature following his international exertions for the USA.

Newcastle XI First half: Elliot; Clark, Lascelles, Mbemba, Haïdara; Aarons, Shelvey; Diamé, Atsu, De Jong; Gayle.

Newcastle XI Second half: Elliot; Lejeune, Dummett, Mbemba (Hanley 62), Haïdara (Colback 62); Gamez, Shelvey; Diamé (Armstrong 62), Perez, De Jong; Mitrovic.

Is Lindelof a wait and see or if he plays in pre season a lot are we assuming he'll start the season?

I can't see Mourinho splashing out £35m on a CB to just sit on the bench but you never know.

We should find out in pre season who Jose prefers as he is usually very honest

          Not sure yet.

We'll only know closer to the season starting.

The good thing is United play Real in the Super Cup in midweek prior to the season starting so that game should make it pretty clear who will start

I have him in my team, lots of people have him in their teams. Everyone thinks he will play. Wait and see in the pre-season maybe

      RMT please

      Forster, (Myhill)
      Lindelof, Trippier, Cedric (Francis, Hunemeier)
      Alli, Eriksen, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek (Ritchie)

Gabbiadin > Defoe and downgrade Eriksen imo to Pogba to afford it.

I think everyone wants him to play that why he's in teams more if you know what I mean

            Should be.
Lukaku was not first choice pen taker for Everton and Pogba was behind Zlatan last year (and scored a pen). FFS also has Pogba first in their "set pieces" list.

Lukaku might claim them tho, but I asume it's PP until proven otherwise ; )

If you regard Alonso as attacking cover it gets easier. He plays like a mid (and is on FKs) after all. Better option than the rotation prone Willian/Pedro/Cesc imo (at least after Haz returns)

You could go: Jesus - Kane - Laca - Pogba - Cout - Alonso (RLC and T.Carrol to enable) from the top 6. Gives u 4 pen takers and plenty of other set pieces in addition to nailedness.

I'm looking to start a discussion on Giggs Boson's table, 'Should Have Scored More', alongside the Plexiglas Principle that teams regress towards the mean each season (links below).

Could anyone with any basic understanding of sports analysis or stats read this thread, and shed some light on some of the questions I have?
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/15/scout-notes-pre-season-3/?hc_page=6#hc_comment_15872888

My main areas of confusion are how applicable the Plexiglass theory is to the Premier League, given that it came from the draft system of Baseball (right?), and which stats it is applicable to in football (obviously not team wins and losses). What does this mean for individual player stats. How independent is one player's conversion rates, for example, from the team conversion rates?

Please take a look at these. Any feedback is very welcome. It would be nice to have a discussion today rather than rating people's teams. Then I'll be satisfied! 😀

A team is still made up of lots of individuals. I don't see what's so confusing? We just look at average team stats from season to season, who deviates the most, and whether the deviations correlate from season to season or not.

Yup team stats. So a player like Eriksen has alow conversion rate. Should we expect that conversion rate to increase or decrease, given that Spurs overperformed last season?

Well, Eriksen had more shots blocked than any other player. So, although he takes a lot from outside the box, I expect him to improve dramatically. 🙂

And what evidence do you have, that Spurs OVERperformed?

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

Yeah it's a fair point that I'm only assuming they overperformed. The stats would show whether or not they were over or under average for conversion rates and the likes. That's what over and underperfoming is according to the Plexiglas Princliple article (I think).

Again, it seems like the justification is ad hoc, using personal knowledge, opinion and gut feeling, which is fine so long as we aknowledge that. I'm simply trying to understand the tables, and what we can actually read into the stats, given that a low conversion rate, or high big chances missed, is not indicative of an imminent rise to form, unless I'm missing something? If someone can't shoot, maybe they just can't shoot.

Exactly. Which is why Shots on Target is the only indicator that really matters. 🙂

Haha. I'm not convinced again. I think conversion rates are a good indicator along with SOT and actually watching the player. But I'm looking at how we can predict rises al falls in goals and assists, but I'm as clueless as before I started trying! I'm gonna look into this plexiglas principle and see how and where it can be applied to football.

Conversion rates are a crap indicator, which you will come to understand, when we are In Season, and you can strip this table down to 2 GW. Conversion rates go up and down faster than a tarts knickers on Friday night! 😉

But when Shots on Target rise, that is the time to jump. That is how I got Tadic, 2 Seasons back.

Yeah but over the course of last season, if the conversion rate is low, the player struggled to score. So it's a good indicator for the following season, unless you have secret knowledge about how trends change from season to season. No?

Likewise if a player had a high number of blocked shots last season, we can expect a high number of blocked shots again! 😉

What do you know that I don't? Hahaha

Think about what you have just said.

If those two statistics are extremely variable - and they are, how can you be sure when the shutter clicked?

Eriksen, for instance, got 8 goals, so probably missed out on another 4(extremely high Shots Blocked). His Big Chances are too small to be really reliable, but his Shots on Target are extremely high.

The other problem, is that it is quite difficult to divine why a conversion rate is low, or indeed, high.

Eriksen, again, had MORE Shots on Target, than Shots in Box. So I would therefore argue that he is due a rise in scoring.

Do you mean shots blocked and conversion rates are variable within each player, between seasons? Or variable in another way? Actually I think you mean that they are highly variable within each player, between games? A large sample increases the predictive power. I'm not basing predictions on stats from one game (small sample, unreliable), but a whole season, which allows for variability between games. The prediction is an average based on an average, like the projections in the members area.

And if both stats are 'variable', why do you like shots blocked, but not conversion rate?

                        Enjoy the sarny 🙂

GB is going to hate me for this, as will a lot of the other stats fiends, like Jonty.

My personal view, is that anything that is TIME based, as this table is(Minutes per goal attempt in box), is automatically suspect. And this table betrays itself, by having Ramsey at the top, who, as we all know, is ALWAYS time-limited. 🙂

This, again, in my view alone, is what the table should be:

      http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/19217/

Play around with the headers - particularly Big Chances Missed, and you will soon get an idea of who the flakes are, and who actually has potential.

      Just my tuppence-worth. 😀

Cheers Doos. I'll certainly play around with it. I actually don't have too much of a problem with time-based stats, so long as we're aware that limitation on minutes isn't factored in.

I would have a similar question about your table though. What reason do we have to believe that a high number of big chances missed indicates a high chance of increased output next year?

Hmmm. Too slow to get the shot away? Defenders recognising the threat? Poor aim? Haha I'm not convinced, but I'd like to feel like I had a secret that nodoby knows about! Eriksen is still my preferred option over Alli (though I currently have neither).

If you look at Eriksen's career stats - Ajax, Spurs, Denmark - he is remarkably consistent ... Unlikely to change in my opinion: he is simply a quality player who gets very involved in team play ... Last year was one of his best years and he is not going to beat that unless Spurs win the league. His assist count was unbelievable.

As Alli is essentially a forward but listed as a mid and Eriksen is more often creative than attacking, I venture that Alli has definitely more potential to score higher in FF though his returns are harder to predict, coming as they will in spurts like last year ... It all depends on how dominant spurs are in games and how they are achieving that dominance: sometimes Alli is a decoy, other times he's the one on the end of things.

Is this helpful in any way? I hope so, it took over 10 mins outta my afternoon!

Haha thank you! It's useful in general, although it doesn't help me learn how to apply the Plexiglas Principle to FPL! 😀

    A) Alli + Laca
    B) Willian + Kane

It's what's best long term when you're buying premium I suppose.
