Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

I'd stay away from Man City defence until they look like a proper defensive unit. I'd probably say Walker because if they don't get that many clean sheets, then Walker will beat kompany on goals and assist, especially with Pep wanting his full backs to drive forward now.

Talking about Klopp's rotation, let's not forget that Liverpool will have to play 2 matches for the Champions League play-offs, on the 15th/16th and 22nd/23rd, which may require them to start rotating early.

    Foster
    Tripper - Lindelhof - Ake/Daniels - Alonso (Yedlin)
    Ali - Mkhitarian/Pogba - Lanzini - (RLC - Carroll)

Ramsey for me. Good team, ideal position to score points as the attacking midfielder in a 3 man midfield. Southampton assets have a lot of work to do to convince. Fixtures are wonderful, but they underwhelmed last season (especially the two you mentioned) so need to see some preseason form. Ince is a punt, preseason form on a poor team - could be a wonderful differential, could be a player who gets subbed a lot and gets you one point. Not saying I don't like Ince, but he's less surefire than Ramsey for me.

Not a fan of four at the back personally, harder to make changes and adapt to good attacking fixtures.

Team looks strong regardless. I'd just prefer another striker or midfielder than a premium defender.

I'm currently on 3-4-3. The number of top strikers and attacking coaches makes it too tempting. I don't mind 3-5-2, but that usually means a deadweight 3rd striker who offers nothing off the bench.

Your backline may well outscore the strikers and midfielders, but I always hate it when a round of attacking return fixtures comes around and you're unable to react as all your money is all in defence.

Agreed, if he looks locked on then he is a standout option at that price. Facilitates so much for your team.

If you want Pedro downgrade KDB to Sana. Lose Chadli!

the only player i can say with certainty will not end up with a rotation risk is KDB. and he was better in the later half of last season. do you think KDB and willian are better choices or Pedro and Sane are better choices? i cant make up my mind

KDB has actually been benched. Only Jesus hasn't

It's because you really want Pedro and don't have him 😉

probably. willian will probably be more reliable than pedro but i'm still favouring the latter

Milner can't be a rotation risk if no one can replace him 🙂

If liverpool purchase a lb, then he will be a rotation risk

      1. Waxys

That's a big if. As of yet he isn't 😉

he can never be a rotation risk. he'll play any defensive position. and liverpool are short on defensive options

Think you need another premium striker.. Kane, Aguero, Jesus or Lacazette

      6/10.

      Issues:
      - double Liverpool
      - Not convinced by Gayle (injury prone and not proven in Premier League and not so many other good alternatives if he not delivers and you want to take him out)

    5. Eze Really?

      Change Firmino (You have Cout)
Take a flyer with another mid to forward. Josh King.
      Can upgrade Willian to Pedro
