Scout Notes – Europa League

A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

If Jesus gets more points than Lacazette, that probably won’t bother you. But a good case can be made for picking Lacazette instead, together with Özil and Sánchez he could part of a dangerous trio. And rotation is probably a smaller issue with Arsenal compared to Man City.

Will Sanchez be in your GWK 1 squad?

The transfer silly season has perhaps reached its peak when it comes to Alexis Sanchez.

With just one year left on his contract and rumours that he wants a move to a Champions League side it is unclear whether he will stay on for 2017/18.

This week has seen significant badge kissing from Sanchez and considerable hugging from team mates via Instagram.

    https://twitter.com/FFScout_Jonty/status/893354551155228672

It all seems just a little too cosy to be real. But maybe I’m being a cynic.

Wenger certainly seems adamant that Sanchez is definitely staying one more year.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40815417

But that is not stopping the speculation continuing with even yesterday’s man Skaka Hislop weighing in with his ‘expert’ opinion.

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/634883/Arsenal-Transfer-News-Gunners-60m-Alexis-Sanchez-PSG-Shaka-Hislop-Gossip-Premier-League

Are you ignoring the noise, assuming he’ll stay and making sure this Fantasy legend (Sanchez, that is not Hislop) is in your Gameweek 1 side?

Will you reserve judgement until you see this weekend's Community Shield?

Or is he just too pricey for you or has the speculation around his future put you off?

Feel free to leave your thoughts here. In addition there is a poll on this issue on our home page.

I think he's probably likely to stay at this point but I'm probably still avoiding.

A lot rests on the shoulders of Harry Kane. For my team it's Kane or Sanchez. I've seen fairly decent sides that fit in both but there's certain areas I don't like, and it involves too many cheap defenders for my liking.

It's a bit of a gamble probably when I think about it, will be hard to scramble to get him in but I have to bet on the fact he's not worth £12m over the first few weeks and then reassess around wild card time.

I'd also like to see how Arsenal are going to line up and how he fits in with Lacazette.

Gonna wait and see where the dust settles- possibly after the 1st international break. If he's hitting the heights of last season early and often then it'll be hard to turn him down.

Sanchez will stay. I think its just the media trying to unsettle Arsenal fans again, which they always seem to do. They make money from making stories, so of course there will be rumours about him leaving. But I think he's going to sign a contract that says if Arsenal don't qualify for the Champions League this season he can leave.

As for having him in my team, I've gone with Lacazette instead for now as my Arsenal cover. I think Sanchez is so expensive, that its hard to fit in my team. But I shall see, still a week to go. Plus ill be paying a lot of attention to the Community Shield on Sunday.

I'm sorry that is a load of **** he clearly wants to leave otherwise he would have signed the contract and there wouldn't even be a discussion about it. This time next year he'll be a city player.

Think what you want. But I know more than you think. You'll eat your words on here when he does sign it, just like 90% of people on this Site do.

Care to wager a pint of beer on it? I'll add the caveat that I don't necessarily believe he'll end up at City; however, I don't think there is any chance he will be an Arsenal player this time next year.

Just remember me saying he will sign the contract. He 'will' sign the contract at some point this season. And as for you saying he clearly wants to leave, that's not true. He wants to see what Arsenal do in the transfer window, see how much money Arsenal are willing to pay, etc. He hasn't once said 'I want to leave'. If I were you, I would spend less time listening to the stupid media outlets who said he was definitely leaving this summer. Cant wait for the window to close so we can stop hearing all this nonsense.

He hasn't publicly said he wants to leave because (with respect to the guy) he is a dedicated professional- who if he is told he has to stay then he will get his head down and work hard for the team. I don't doubt that he could well be at Arsenal come the end of the transfer window (it is up to Arsenal after all). But come next season he's definitely going to move on to a club that can challenge for the title and that will be playing in the Champions League.

I'm with you, the caveat being if Arsenal look like they can challenge and build he will sign, if they look like they are happy for the top 4 trophy then he'll be gone... so he'll be gone

          So for you,
Delay in signing contract = wanting to leave?

That is a bit simplistic assumption in my opinion. There are lots of variables with money, contract length, etc.

          1. Mikeharbrw
            • 11 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

A 'delay' lasting at least the whole of last season. If this hadn't happened before with the likes of Nasri, Van Persie etc then I could maybe get on board with it; but it's just history repeating itself. The failure to qualify for the Champions League was probably the nail in the coffin in terms of him staying.

You just have to ask yourself the question- how often do you read about players from the other big clubs having not signed their contracts going into the last year of their deals? Hardly ever. Arsenal have had a problem and will continue to have a problem holding onto their best players.

Kaku is essential with UTD opening fixtures and no viable alt attacking cover.

Next up it's a toss up between Kane and Sanchez for me. Can't see anyway to build a team with the three of them TBH. Kane has the edge until we see how Sanchez Laca and co link up. Laca could dent Alexis' goal threat, and could end up being the preferred Ars option.

Wenger will lose face now if he leaves. So I don't think he will.

I will lose points if I put him in my team. So I don't think I will. 🙂

12m for a winger who doesn't take penalties is ludicrous in my opinion. No matter who it is. If Wenger started to deploy a 3-5-2 with Sanchez as 2nd striker that might change things though.

      A bit to expensive atm.

If he becomes nailed on and staying... ignoring Sanchez is allways hard.

I feel there can become a captain battle between Sanchez, Kane and Lukaku this season. Having all three seems unlikely, so for now i'll stick with the two latter.

It boils down to Kane or Sanchez for most. In my opinion, Sanchez is far and away the best option for Arsenal, way above Lacazette. Alli is great cover for Spurs at 3.0 cheaper than Kane. 18 goals and 11 assists last season, he needs to be taken more seriously as an option over Kane.

I also had two squads, one with and one without, but have now decided against the Sanchez one.

In order to justify his price I would need to captain him in several early game-weeks including GW1, and I don't think his mind, match fitness and position are likely to be right for that.

I might well consider him when I play my Wildcard though.

I'll avoid. He must be exhausted after summer tournaments many years in a row, and he usually starts a bit slow. He'll probably get a goal or two in gw 1-4, hopefully I can spend that 12 million on a bit more than that.

Been tinkering with various line-ups swapping Sanchez for KDB and Jesus for Lukaku. But still leaning towards his price being too steep - he will have to deliver the same points this season to justify it.

Sanchez is imo the best pick in the game, but he's a wait and see at the moment for me for the following reasons,

      1. His PPM last season increased quite significantly because he was played at striker quite often. He had an almost identical PPM the 2 seasons before that. If that PPM had continued, he would've finished with around 220 points last season. But he instead finished with 264. Lacazette, as we know for now, is going to play striker, which means Sanchez's PPM is set to take a slight drop.

      2. Lacazette is quality. He is no Giroud. With him in the team, the points will certainly be shared more with Sanchez than before. Lacazette as 'cover' for Sanchez and using the extra funds elsewhere can buy you a whole extra premium attacker, which is likely to make up for the difference in points between the two.

The first Point simply isn't true. To quote "The Number Game - Arsenal" on this site regarding the current system with Sanchez as an attacking midfielder......

"From Gameweek 33 onwards, Sanchez was the number one FPL midfielder for shots and goals (six), joint-top with Spurs’ Heung Min-Son for efforts on target (10) and second to the South Korean for attempts in the box, by 14 to 15.

The tactical change failed to alter the Chilean’s overall goal threat, with his minutes per shot (from 24.9 to 25.3) and efforts on target (from 1.3 to 1.2) more or less identical, though his attempts in the box slipped from 2.1 to 1.8."

I'm hoping Lacazette can become a large provider of Arsenal's attacking points. My current draft feels risky as it lacks both Kane and Sanchez, the best captain choices, but I have Lukaku for the first few weeks, and by then I'll probably have brought one in.

My current front 7 is Alli, Salah, Willian, JWP, Lukaku, Jesus, Lacazette

On the fence. I love Sanchez, but if he loses penalties to Lacazette and is shifted wider then he won't repeat last year's score. If Arsenal line up in a sort of 3-4-1-2 with Sanchez up top alongside Lacazette and he keeps penalties then I'll make room for him.

Bottom line - His price-tag means too many compromises elsewhere, namely not having Lukaku and Kane who I think are essential. If I am completely wrong, he goes wild over the next few weeks and either Kane or Lukaku (massively) under-perform then I can reassess with my WC.

Managers always say the player isn't for sale, this drives the price up. If PSG does offer 60m Wenger will sell, better than letting him go for free, Wenger is an economist after all.

Sanchez was always such a force because he was the one Arsenal player you could rely on for returns. Plus had penalties and often operated as a striker.

Lacazette gives a cheaper option who could arguably do even better than Sanchez - so to start with Sanchez over Laca is madness imo.

Just too expensive this year, will be captaining Lukaku and Kane most weeks so can't justify another 12m player who won't be captained.

He won't be playing CF at all this season so its hard to justify having him over Kane or Lukaku, can't have them all and have to hope Alli or Mane + 2.5m can score just as well.

Probably in, I'll see after the Community Shield. A lot of chat about him not playing striker, if you look at the last 5 games (including FA cup final) of the season he played LF in all of them and got 6 goals and 1 assist. Makes the non-striker argument hold a bit less weight. May lose pens which is another story, but 0 of those goals were penalties.

Having started with him in both my previous campaigns, and captained him more than any other player for the last two years, I am confidently letting him go. Not only is he playing for a team that is unlikely to be in the top 3, he would find it difficult to keep the same form for another year, but now that he is clearly unhappy, he will fail to deliver; at least not up to his price tag. Think of Aguero last year. Psychology matters and Sanchez' is not in the "Reds" shape now. Even if he stays, it will take a while for him to settle. He is definitely not with me in GW1.

Regardless of the drama in the background he won't be in my team. I just cant see Arsenal coming anywhere near City, Chelsea, Man United, Spurs or Liverpool in attacking returns. 12 million isn't exactly an enticing price point either. I'd sooner go for Lacazette if I were to punt on an Arsenal attacker. Sorry Sanchez.

I sold Sanchez two seasons ago after a barren run. He then scored five goals in two games. He is the first name on my team.

Yeah, Chadli. So much potential and capability. Could easily be worth 8m in FPL but could just as easily be a complete and utter drain on our limited budgetary resources. 🙁

That is it, in a nutshell.

The other saving available is to have Jesus rather than Lukaku. But, after Matic's move, that is considerably less appealing.

Eriksen has potential to score even more, while All is operating at his limits, imo. I will still have Alli at some stage. Also, Eriksen is only going to get better at free kicks. Coutinho is 9.0, and has on my tables a BIGGER goal threat than Mané, who is nonetheless my reserve option, if I don't slide all the way down to Wijnaldum. But Coutinho also has huge potential to improve his output with assists.

        DDG
        Alonso Kolasinac Trippier Bertrand Aké
        KDB Fabregas Zaha
        Kane Lukaku

        (Elliot Carroll Romeu Quaner)

        Thoughts on this bunch?

Carroll and Rom should provide 2-3pt bench cover if necessary.

If I have to jump on a midfield bandwagon, KDB or Fab are easily downgradeable..

Can't see beyond 4/5 at the back if playing a Kane Kaku doubler.

KDB could become Jesus if I fancied another (c) option.

Too hard to fit in a 3rd striker, if a bandwagon emerges? Could downgrade KdB, but then the midfield is very weak.
          Alonso -> 4.0 fodder gives you 3m. So Quaner (4.5) + 3 m = 7.5 is all you've got for upgrades with two transfers. I smell hits incoming 🙂

Forster and Begovic have gone down in my estimations...

I'm either going all out with DDG or pairing Elliot with a 4.

Anyone else with a tendency to go from one end of the spectrum to another?

I'm starting with 4.5/4.0 but with every intention of switching down to 2x 4.0s when a second emerges.

I'm not having DDG, 5.5 for an extra what, 25-30 points in a season?

To be a Devil's Advocate, those points count though and I'm not necessarily wise enough to spend the excess money well enough (plus I'm burning transfers in the process).

            Food for thought though

Have stuck with Hennessey/Elliott for a while now... Can't complain at 8.5 with the opening fixtures you get out of those two

This could be shrewd given the fix and rotation. Had completely overlooked Henn

Pretty solid team right here I think:

        Foster (Elliott)

        Kompany Kola Trippier Cedric/Yosh (Hunemeier)

        Zaha Ritchie Salah KDB (Carroll)

        Kane Lukaku (McBurnie)

Will leave the Yoshida/ Cedric decision up until the last minute. Ritchie is the only one I'm wavering on but with all set pieces and PKs he's got to notch a fair few points...

Don't want points left on the bench. I'll take Carroll as a steady eddie

will Hunemeier be a starter ?
Carroll is the best 4.5 mid and will start most games

        Foster
        Alonso, Kolasinac, Trippier, TAA
        KDB, Eriksen, Salah
        Lukaku, Firmino, Austin

        (Myhill, Milivojevic, Carroll, Rangel)

Happy with most of the team but would you downgrade Austin to upgrade Milivojevic?

One week to go, anything I should be worried about / keeping tabs on with this team?
        4-3-3
        Foster (Eliott)
        Kolasinac Trippier Bertrand Daniels (Dunk)
        Willian KDB Zaha (Knockaert TC)
        Lukaku Kane Austin

        Thoughts on this 4-4-2

        DDG
        Trippier Yoshida Hegazi 4.5
        KDB Mane Salah JWP
        Kane Lukaku

        Elliot Carrol McBurnie 4.0m

Was thinking of going Alexander-Arnold for first couple of weeks with Clyne out. But is that an unnecessary transfer waiting to happen?

Appreciate it's weak at the back but still have Spurs / United / Sot cover in defence and 5 explosive options in midfield and attack.

Other option is switch Salah for Firmino, play 4-3-3 and get and extra 0.5m to spend in defence

Reasonably happy with my squad (although no doubt it will change a hundred times before next week!!) and have 0.5m in the bank.

        So do I

        A) Change Lindelof to Kolasinac

        B) Change Salah to Alli

        C) Leave it as it is?

I think it offers pretty good flexibility if changes required once the season starts e.g. easy to bring in KdB/Hazard/Sanchez etc. by downgrading a striker
