The Numbers Game – Watford

Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

      I've got a 5-2-3 as well but it was fatally flawed as your is until I sacrificed one of my front 3. In order to afford that front 5 you're left with a terrible defence. Danilo and Hegazi - and possibly Francis too (and RLC for that matter) will be squad players - when they don't play, you're stuck with those 2-pointers on the bench.

    Rather than singing "Wh-oa, Mkhitaryan, Henrik Mkhitaryan, he's our mid-field Ar-me-ni-an" it should be ""Wh-oa, Mkhitaryan, Henrik Mkhitaryan, he's an Ar-me-ni-an in the northhh"

    Hows this for my draft team against my mates in a 7 man league:

    If I plan to wildcard during an international break, will the initial team I pick be affected by the market or remain untouched? What if I pick a team at the beginning and a player rises in price before the next game .... I might not be able to afford the team anymore.

      You would press the WC button as soon as possible. Any players you have that get price rises will not be a problem for you, unless you take them out during the break and put them back later.

      Try to have an idea of what players you want regardless of their price. Be quick to get the players in that you will want in the next GW. Sure you can try to get a player in for the 0.2 raise and then sell him but not on the expense of losing value on the guys you really want in your team.

      You're taking a risk with Firmino and Rashford - not guaranteed to start, and I don't think McArthur's been very involved in pre-season.

          Strikers that are guaranteed to start and have no rivals. Benteke at Palace, Chicharito at West Ham (when he's fit), Lacazette and Morata, Vardy. If you can only afford 2 expensive strikers, play 2 up top and have a cheap (5-6m) striker on the bench.

            of those you list only Benteke and Vardy are nailed on and fit and are in the same bracket as Firmino.

            Firmino is always going to start because Klopp loves him. Gegenpress an' all that.

            Firmino is the cheaper(ish) access to Liverpool's goals.
