A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I know city and Spurs probably have the best attack but here me out. You guys think it's early etc but I believe that Morata and Laca have quality.

Morata is just a steal. I have always been a fanboy.

He's going to get 24 goals this season. Kane is too expensive and Jesus and Kun and pep you never know.

3 focal points. 3 big teams. Alvaro Laca Lukaku.

Could be the way. Laca and Morata will be value

    I repeat. Morata is amazing.

To be honest, when they look amazing consistently and Kane fails to deliver, I'll make the switch... Kane is just a place holder for me untill I can find a good replacement

disagree. chelsea looks a side in disarray.

      injuries
      suspensions
      lack of squad depth
manager conflicts with players and board

for he moment i would avoid. kane is a reliable and explosive striker.

Indeed, Morata is an amazing prospect. It is just a question of how soon will he come to the party. The man has played 3 out of the last 4 UCL finals, he cannot be bad. He is surely gonna be one of my 3 strikers in FPL, sooner or later.

Mounie will increase in value, he's nearly doubled his ownership already. This guy was just saying it won't imminent, i.e. won't be for a couple of days, which he's probably right. Though I've already switched Ince and Abraham (who was a sub for me) for Mounie and Xhaka to try improve my team value in preparation for my WC around week 5-7 (if I need it). Happy to take the odd 4 point hit early and jump on bandwagons if it'll increase my team value and doesn't make my team any worse.

No, I had a draft for it though. I didn't do it because I had Iwobi then Wenger's comments made me think Ozil will start which is what happened...

But I would've done very well if I did...

My bench was Fabianski Iwobi RLC Hegazi in my draft. That's a repeat of my 24 points last season even with Iwobi who didn't play...I even sent my draft through to Ruth_NZ who would be able to back up this up...

I've no idea who my bench is because I specifically set my team up to have 15 good players, Elliot the only fodder. I say not going well coz means an early wc is inevitable plus the bulk of my score has been from man city who obs ain't benchers

            All true.

The key to a GW1 BB is that there are teams with cheap defenders and a good CS chance. The best 2 options this season were WBA and Swansea. Personally I didn't want to rely on Swansea at Southampton but as it happens both teams kept a CS. So the GW1 BB would have been good.

I have 15 points + Elliot benched myself so it would have been fine even as it stood. But no matter, BB isn't that big of a deal anyway. 🙂

Of course, but the best player is not always the best for FPL. Salah is just so far forward and they keep feeding the ball to him. He could've scored a hat-trick if he was a better finisher.

Mane is coming back after a lengthy layoff. He'll be more involved as the season progresses. His finishing is a major advantage of owning him than Salah.

he's only on -5% on fplstatistics. and seeing liverpools defence yesterday gives me hope of some returns. If he gets anything from that game his price isn't going anywhere.

Really ... thanks for the confidence! I'm a little disappointed to be honest. All hinges on a Utd cleanie and Kaku doing something. My punt on a back five has paid off so far though which is something.

All my previous fantasy games I've had most success with the defence so seemed silly not to continue. Didn't shout it from the rooftops though, I was anxious it would backfire. I'm on the same pts as Mark so that will do me! What plans are you hatching for your squad?

I had planned on 5 cheap defenders who rotate well with each other. So far it's been good with Fernandez and Stephens doing the job. Begovic was also great. One more save and I'd have got 2 save points from him. He's my only goalie until he starts performing terribly. Midfield is a bit of a sucker. Planning to turn my 3-4-3 into a 4-4-2 or 5-3-2.

Firmino interests me but see no way of that happening until wc. Reds don't do cleanies anyway so the move to a striker doesn't seem so bad and he seems to be attracting the bonus.

Firmino is a mirage. Had him for a major part of the last season. Gets a big haul once in a while. I'd say watch him till the IB gets over and if you like what you see, get him.

With players like that, you have to stick for long term in order to get a decent return

Very premature indeed, but I do like the look of it and prefer it to what I have (for the minute) .... six big hitters too !
