Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is at the double on his league debut for Man United, while Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan offer able support from midfield. Meanwhile, Harry Kane spurns chances aplenty as Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen steer Spurs to victory at Newcastle.

Lukaku hits the ground running

Perhaps it was a visit from his favourite whipping boys West Ham that ensured a seamless start for Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United.

In a Gameweek where many big-hitters thrived up front, the Belgian didn’t let us down, bullying Slaven Bilic’s side again by scoring twice in a 4-0 rout at Old Trafford.

The most popular player in the game (48%), Lukaku was also the most captained (28%), while over 31,000 opted to play their triple captain on the summer signing.

Although United’s midfield did enough to suggest that they may yet provide us with more budget-friendly options, Lukaku’s immediate impact suggests that, if anything, his 48% ownership looks likely to grow ahead of clashes with Swansea, Leicester and Stoke in the next three.

However, there’s no doubt that the displays of Paul Pogba (goal) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (two assists, already one more than he managed last season) indicate that United will be a different proposition from the side that scored just 26 times at home in 2016/17.

Indeed, with Nemanja Matic sitting in front of the back-four, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford all registered 27 touches apiece in the final third in the roles behind Lukaku.

While Lukaku will remain the main man for now, Pogba and Mkhitaryan could soon force their way into consideration if Jose Mourinho’s men can build momentum over that kind schedule.

The wing-back system may be Jose’s Plan B

Having utilised a three-at-the-back for a handful of summer friendlies, Mourinho rolled out a 4-1-4-1 set-up against the Hammers.

This was a blow to the 7% owners of Antonio Valencia – impressive as a wing-back over pre-season, he reverted to a right-back berth today.

The most expensive United defensive option at 6.5, we were looking to Valencia as a source of attacking points but he managed just 15 touches in the final third to Daley Blind’s 30 on the opposite flank. Meanwhile, the Dutchman took seven of his side’s 11 corners.

Considering the nature of today’s display, Mourinho will surely be tempted to keep things as they are for Saturday’s trip to Swansea. While a right-back spot doesn’t rule Valencia out of our thoughts, it may force a reassessment of his appeal in the premium defender bracket after the likes of Marcos Alonso and Sead Kolasinac both impressed in the Gameweek.

Frustrated Kane fires a blank

Runner-up in our maiden Captain Poll and second most popular armband pick among FPL managers, Harry Kane left his owners deflated with a one-point return at Newcastle.

Yes, the Spurs frontman’s lack of August Premier League goals continued but this was far from the lacklustre display that saw him fail to register a single effort away to Everton in Gameweek 1 last season.

Six shots – with five inside the box – was top among forwards on both counts. Having struck the woodwork and also had an effort ruled out for offside, Kane could easily have bagged double-figures Fantasy returns on another day.

Granted, there’s no shortage of in-form premium frontmen to consider right now but back-to-back home clashes with Chelsea’s decimated defence and Burnley surely give Kane the chance to immediately atone for today’s blank.

We better get used to the Eriksen vs Alli debate

While Kane fluffed his lines on Tyneside, the Spurs midfield duo wasted no time in picking up the points.

Second only to Kevin De Bruyne for assists last season, Christian Eriksen already has two to his name after teeing up Deli Alli and Ben Davies. The Dane also boasted a considerable threat and fired six attempts on goal – more than any midfielder – on his way to claiming maximum bonus.

Yet Alli reminded us just why he’s the most popular midfielder in FPL by coolly slotting home the opener. Priced at 9.5 apiece, the Spurs midfield big-hitters were also identical for points per match (6.1) last time around – getting in one already seems a wise move.

Given their consistency, non-Kane owners may even consider acquiring both if they have viable options up top as armband alternatives.

Davies rewards early adopters

While his fellow left-back Danny Rose is itching for a way out of White Hart Lane, Davies is making headlines for all the right reasons.

Having scored in Gameweek 38 last season, the Welshman’s strike at St James’ Park means that he has netted in back-to-back league matches, with today’s clean sheet also reminding us of Tottenham’s resilience.

Although young right-back Kyle Walker-Peters offers a cheaper option at 4.5, he’s surely set to give way to Kieran Trippier once the latter gets over his ankle problem.

Coming in at 5.5, Davies is still less expensive than centre-backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, yet only 3% of FPL managers have acquired him. Encouragingly, he also took four of his side’s seven corners.

Davies excelled despite being utilised as a left-back, rather than a wing-back, with the north London outfit lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation today.

Spurs welcomed back Son Heung-Min back from injury with an appearance off the bench and Mauricio Pochettino may well choose to retain the same system and unleash the South Korean from the off against Chelsea’s defence next weekend. On the other hand, he could turn to 3-4-2-1 if he doesn’t fancy Walker-Peters against the raids of Marcos Alonso down the Blues’ left.

Elliot may just stay on our benches

The Magpies were already without injured right-back DeAndre Yedlin then watched on as another two defenders, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune, limped off before the break.

Rafa Benitez will also have to reshuffle his double-pivot after Jonjo Shelvey’s dismissal for a stamp on Alli, with new loan arrival Mikel Merino (5.0) expected to deputise.

Today’s teamsheet at least confirmed that Rob Elliot is the only current active keeper at a cost of 4.0 in FPL. Owned by 17%, he was the second most benched player in the Gameweek, named as a sub by 673,648 FPL managers.

The fixtures may look favourable (hud WHU swa STO bri) but those problems at the back hardly look conducive to clean sheet returns and suggest that Elliot may well have to get used to FPL bench-warming duties.

Interest in Huddersfield’s Steve Mounie could now rise further ahead of next weekend’s home clash with the Magpies after the 6.0-priced striker netted twice away to Palace yesterday.

Waiting to hear re Zaha injury.

If out for a while then Zaha > Rambo the obvious move?

Really wanted Tadic or Redmond to step up v Swansea but nothing doing.

Will Rambo start? It's an obvious move because he scored. I did consider myself, but took a hit instead to bring Son in.

I was hoping to save my free transfer and do a double next week to do the following:

    Zaha > Mkhitaryan
Chicharito > 6m(please advise a cheap nailed striker with good fixtures)

Mkhitaryan's price might go up before then, and I'd have to look at strikers of 5.5m or less. Zaha also might not play if his injury is too bad. If he is fit, he'll be playing Liverpool. Liverpool conceded 3 against Watford, so it may not be a bad fixture.

I don't want to take the hit, but I feel that
Mkhitaryan could pay me back as he'll be up against Swansea. Chicharito will be away to Southampton, and I'm expecting them to keep a clean sheet.

Do I or do I not take a hit? If I do, which striker do I get?

For me: Salah, Miki, Lukaku, Vardy, Yoshida, Hegazi obviously, Firmino, Mounie, Vokes..

The top 5 list was a shambles. Better goals (Cisse, Kasami etc) overlooked in favour of the big names.

Henry's goal v United was also far better than the one vs Spurs, where all he really had to do was outpace Jamie Redknapp (lol) and stick it in the corner.

    Some thoughts on Harry Kane.

I wonder if the decision to take him out of our teams will be a pivotal moment in our seasons.

Last year Aguero was priced at £13m and I took him out before his injury/red card (can't remember which) due to thinking there was better value elsewhere. In the end if turned out everyone got rid and Pep happened so we'll never know if it was a good move or not.

It's still got me thinking about Kane. I'm not buying into the Wembley factor, nor the August factor but I will be monitoring him closely in the next few gameweeks.

Said it before the season - at 12.5m we have to take into account his value at that price. Given that Vardy and Firmino have started off strongly and Morata and Lacazette were both on the scoresheet is there potential to spread the money and put it to better use?

From my own team for example I have Kane + Gabbiadini. Would that money be better on Firmino+Morata/Lacazette or Firmino + Vardy to free up a cool 2.5m for defence / midfield.

I'm not knee jerking yet, far from it, it's only been one game, but further down the line it could make or break our seasons by the decision we make over sticking or not sticking with Kane. I don't think there's ANY doubts that he'll score and do well, it's just whether he'll outscore other cheaper players by enough to make it worth while.

You pay the exrta £2m for a secure captaincy option. When (or if??) Spurs starts firing, you'll need him. That being said, I'm planning to get him GW3, depending on how he looks against Chelsea.

No doubt that Spurs will start firing, but how much more will he score than Firmino at £4m less and hopefully on pens the rest of the season?

He's a good captaincy option for sure but so is Lukaku (should have addressed that in original post)

I think Firmino will below 20 goals. With pens, maybe 15-18. Kane can reach 30 goals. I see Firmino as a substitute to having Salah or Mane but not Kane. Kane, Lukaku and maybe Aguero will be challenging for golden boot. The rest are a level beneath them

Firmino definitely won't score as many as Kane, that's probably a safe assumption but he did get 11 goals, 11 assists last year. Can he do that again? I'd think so.

Add in pens and you're looking at 15-18 like you say.

Then add £4m you can spend elsewhere to upgrade the likes of Gabbiadini to a premium striker (nearly at Aguero level at that point) and suddenly it's a different story.

            Definitely not without risk though.

Agree on Lukaku being a factor. If ManU is on a roll this season, he might turn out to be the go-to captaincy option - in which case Kane might not be needed.

Surely if he has Pens, Firmino is a great option.
Are we still sure Firmino will have pens with Milner on the pitch? Idk.
Plus watching liverpool play, the no 9(Firmino) always holds up play and allows the wingers on both sides to bomb forward and get into better attacking positions.

Kane this season and Aguero last are completely different entities in my opinion. Kane is 100% nailed and on pens, Aguero was neither at different points of the season. It would be nice to spread the funds elsewhere but miss out on a captaincy haul of 4-5 goals from Kane and your rank could plummet irreversibly. I'll be keeping patient and believe he will again be crowned golden boot.

The thing with Kane is what you can do to your team with Eriksen/Alli as your Spurs coverage and saving those extra funds.

Well, you have a point there. I just dont like to have 3 players of the same team this soon in the season. I wanted to have Spurs coverage in the defence, looked at last season points and thought Eriksen offered better value and allowed me to have a more balanced team.

That being said, obviously Alli/Erik provide better value. But with Kane you get great captaincy material.
We're all thinking this now just because Erik and Alli scored more yesterday and Kane blanked.
Had Kane scored which he couldve easily done, none of these topics would be on.

Morata is key for me. If he starts playing and contributing like he did last match, a 10m route in to the Chelsea attack looks a good enough reason to jettison Kane. I may go with Eriksen/Alli + Son to offset it.

With Burnley and Swansea at home soon I certainly want him, good captain option. But longer time I'll have to consider the money and what it could do for me.

Spurs do have some REALLY nice fixtures after Chelsea though up until GW9.

Think there may be more value in Alli or Erikson.

I think Lukaku having a great season largely depend on Mkhi. If he reaches the levels of Dortmund, he can get 15-20 assists and Lukaku will be the main beneficiary of that. I'm glad I have both. I have a feeling he will be like a new signing for Utd and provide great value after a difficult first season. Mourinho teams always click in their second season.

You said it yourself, it's only one game. Lukaku and Kane are nailed, Pep's Pep and the others don't inspire the same confidence. Vardy's fixtures are still terrible, Firmino's tied up in Europe and Bats' opening game seemed irresistible on paper.

My approach was to use the 3rd striker and 4th mid slots to play with short term differentials, with nailed on players elsewhere. Saying that, something about Vardy and Shakespeare screams fixture proof in light of Friday's performance.

If he had scored, everyone would be saying he's essential. These doubts will always be here for very expensive players who don't perform week in, week out. That being said, even if he blanks next week and looks out of it, there's no really valid reason to get rid before BUR SWA.

It's always tempting to spread the funds for a more balanced team, but imagine for example we had gone without Lukaku (I understand you never would for GW1, but bear with 😉 ). We would currently be floundering around the 2 million mark most likely. It's that safety, that's the reason why we get Lukaku as Kane is; they're highly owned, highly captained, entirely capable of bagging a hattrick even playing Chelsea at Wembley 😉

The same discussion I'm trying to start for Kane could work for Lukaku as well to be fair.

Lukaku to Firmino frees up £3m and you get to keep Kane.

Need to have more than 1 captain. Neither Firmino nor Vardy are really captainable. Well, maybe Vardy but it's a punt. Lacazette is interesting, I agree, but it depends on how he plays/returns if/when Sanchez returns.

I'd rather have a 'proper' striker than Firmino, but Lacazette/Morata + 2m vs Kane will be a key decision when I wildcard. That 2m could be the difference between Zaha and Salah, or Daniels and Alonso.

I have been thinking the same...did it with Aguero last season, and it really paid off. I also considered dropping Kane from my team this year, because of his high pricetag. But I have him atm, and have no itentions what so ever, of dropping him. His stats from yesterday just about matches Lukaku's, so no reason to be scared after 1GW. But its an interesting discussion for sure!

I agree, and no, they are not the same! It was just an example to make the arguement that the most expensive doesnt have to be the best option, if you spread your funds correctly! The biggest issue is how to do that, and still have good capt. options! So ppm, is an ok measure for value...but it does not take big hauls and capt. into concideration!

So we will just have to be paitent. All we can do is wait, and see!

Hi Andy, really interesting thoughts. And we've already seen the impact Alli and Eriksen will have this season in 'covering' Kane (to an extent).

For me, though, I'll be sticking with him until at least GW3. If he blanks in these 2 weeks then a decision will have to be made.

I've been having the exact same thoughts. As good as he is and we know he can be explosive, if you have a viable alternative captain every week then the money saved switching him to Jesus,Lacazette Firminho Vardy etc can mean you have another big hitter in midfield as opposed to a Zaha or a Ritchie etc. Also Spurs mids likely to score nearly as well as Kane for 3m less. Not knee jerking but deffo one to monitor

I did this last season and it didn't work. I had Alli Eriksen and Davies and still got annihilated due to Kane captainers when he bagged a hattrick. I got rid after those Burnley and Hull games too. Also did the hazard Sanchez merry go round and this season I'm looking to stick to the core of my team and transfer around the edges.

The captaincy is huge, if you aren't going to captain him then he isn't worth it. I'm rotating between him and Big Rom.

Got an early dilemma here. With Lukaku delivering from word GO, I need to get on that train.
I CAN do it with a KdB->Alli downgrade, and combine my 2.0ITB with the 0.5 from that downgrade to go Defoe->Lukaku, but only just. How does the likelyhood look for pricechanges all around there?

    My squad as it stands:
    Fabianski-Foster

    David Luiz-Otamendi-Aké-Rosenior-Cédric
    De Bruyne-Pogba-Atsu-Ince-Iwobi
    Defoe-Kane-Firmino

It's a tough call, as I'm expecting Lukaku to go up in price before the next gamweek. If you're looking to gain 0.5, consider downgrading Iwobi or one of your keepers to Elliot as well. You're keeping Kane and City will start scoring easily soon.

Leaves me with TC and RLC fighting for the 3rd mid slot in a 4-3-3.

Just realized that with the same exactly money, instead of KDB & Zaha & Kompany,i could had bought Eriksen & Mhki & Kompany, meaning 19 points more, meaning dozens of thousands places higher at the OR.Shoot me.

Too many possibilities around, even the top scorer of the week could have done something better 😛

Yeah, the entire dream-team is a 81.5 team, so one could have gone real good with a bit of luck here....
