The Technical Area – Liverpool’s Attacking Trio

Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

Surely Redmond is a better alternative to replace Zaha than Ramsey? Ramsey didn't even start and he has worse fixtures.

Interesting Arsenal Wenger defends his contract practices and if you look at what happened to Rooney when he signed that long 5 year contract Wenger may have a point...

“I personally think the real question we have to answer is does the hunger index increase or decrease when you have a short contract or a long contract?” Wenger said.

“I would on that front be on the opposite side. That means the hunger index is higher when the contracts are shorter and it decreases naturally when the guys have long contracts.”

lots of united can play in his position.
      micky, martial, mata, lingard, rashford.
he'll be rotated. the question is when and how much.
I would still be inclined to say he's a great fpl pick though because the answer to that question is: probably only later in some (but certainly not all) big games perhaps lingard may come in, or hererra coming in and mata replacing micky's position; and then also when CL comes round he might see some rests.

Pogba is definitely the 2nd most nailed attacker after Lukaku.

Problem with Mhki is United have Lingard, Martial, Rashford, Mata and Mkhi all competing for 2 (max 3) positions, and Mkhi has not typically been the obvious first choice. Feels like one bad game away from being dropped.

I am actually not superconvinced: Unless Mourinho drastically changes his approach from last season there will quite a lot of rotation amongst United attackers. Probably one or maybe both of Herrera and Lingard will soon start some games, and some games will definitely see a midfield 3 with Pogba-Matic-Herrera, in which case there are only two attacking positions, both wide where Mkhi do not play as well as he does centrally. Seems quite likely that some games will be 2/3 of Rashford/lingard/Mata/martial for these places.

I am United-fan, so no one will be happier than me if Mkhi does really well, but still slightly uncertain, last season the attacking mids who played were notoriously hard to predict. However for that price he could still get benched occasionally and be a good pick.

I also think people are overvaluing his performance againt West Ham, I would say Rashford, Lukaku, Matic and possibly Pogba played better than him.

Absolutely this. Basing it on one game. Mkhi is in no way nailed. It really wouldn't surprise me or any United fan to see Lingard start next game or Martial and Rashford shifted over.

I reckon Mourinho will switch between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 systems depending on fixture difficulty.

When he opts for 4-3-3 (e.g. when he wants to play on the break against top 6 sides), Mhiki will be competing for one of the wide forward slots, which will often go to Rashford and Lindgard due to their pace and work rate, respectively.

Mourinho is an arch pragmatist and won't think twice about dropping Mhiki in order to accommodate a tighter counter attacking approach as and when deemed necessary, regardless of his form.

      1. Page 302

So much this! The question is not just, "Is Mkhi nailed", the question is, "Is he nailed to the slot behind the striker?" I can see a scenario where Mou changes formation to three burly mids instead of two, and Mkhi is shifted to the wing, where he is suddenly not so good (both in terms of real footie and FPL).

Mkhitaryan is 100% nailed. Mourinho will take off him when games are virtually won however, mainly for the CL.

This is something most people need to understand about him: he takes time to adjust but then he is sensational. Bundesliga player of the year. His first season he was underwhelming there. Second a different story.

Mourinho didn't buy him to bring him in and out of the team. He bought him to be the creative force.

Mourinho prior to the Super Cup - “Everyone is in our plan which is having a good team with multiple options. We have important players who will be out until the end of the year and so our squad is not too big. We need different players. Lukaku, Martial, Rashford are all different and we need everyone. It will be fun to pick a team for each game, based on the match and opponents. This team is good with many options.”

In some sense I could agree that Mkhi is the 2nd most nailed attacking players of MU now, but it's better to talk about the percentage of matches that he will start.

In some teams, 2nd/3rd most-nail means 100% sure starters like Sanchez & Ozil or Kane & Ali & Eriksen, but the same does not apply to MU.

I predict Mkhi starts 75% of matches this season. In 4-3-3, Morinho may opt for Rashford and Lingard on wings. When playing against tougher opponents, perhaps Matic + Fellaini/Herrera/Carrick in double pivot with Pogba occupies his position.

Fantasy-wise, he is a still a great buy if you believe he can put up 8 goals 12 assist this season. He plays full match at GW1, which is a good signal of his likeliness to last for the whole match in more occasions, which only further increase his fantasy value

50/50 on this statement. Mounie looks a good prospect, so I disagree with you there. However, I agree that Huddersfield are bad. We battered them at the City Ground last season, and we were shocking last season.
