Scout Notes – Carabao Cup – Tuesday

Tony Pulis defies convention by declaring his love for the Carabao Cup as a strong Baggies side progress to the third round, while a much-changed Watford team crash out despite another goal from Etienne Capoue.

Elsewhere, wholesale changes are the order of the evening as Swansea City finally start scoring, Jermain Defoe blanks in a Bournemouth victory and Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Brighton also win.

Here are the notes from Tuesday night’s action.

Baggies up for the cup

It’s hard to devalue a cup contest with so little perceived worth in the first place, but the usual cries of anguish were heard anyway when the likes of Watford took to the pitch having made six changes to their Premier League side.

Then again, the Hornets ended up losing 3-2 to a Bristol City team that made nine, so not all the blame can be laid at the door of those in the top flight.

But at least one top-flight manager is in the Carabao Cup to win it – Tony Pulis.

“We’ve taken the competition seriously. It gives us a chance to get to Wembley. I’ve been fortunate to take Stoke there and it would be lovely to do that with West Brom.”

Pulis made ‘just’ four changes to his side for the trip to Accrington Stanley and was rewarded with a 3-1 win in which Jay Rodriguez scored his first competitive goal for the Baggies. He also provided the assist for fellow forward Salomon Rondon’s strike, while Matt Phillips also emerged with goal and assist returns.

West Brom lost their appeal over Hal Robson-Kanu’s weekend dismissal at Burnley, meaning the Welsh international will now be out of commission until Gameweek 5, missing the visit of Stoke City and a trip to Brighton.

That merely serves to promote Rondon’s case for more time off the bench as Rodriguez has started as the lone striker in both Baggies’ league fixtures so far. Despite being shifted to the flank last night, the latter’s goal will have given some encouragement to his 2.1% Fantasy Premier League ownership.

But no FPL manager has ever grown fat on the produce of West Brom forwards under Pulis, and the manager’s public backing for the Carabao Cup is more likely to raise the risk of injury and even perhaps rotation at the other end of the pitch.

Ahmed Hegazi (19.2%) and Craig Dawson (6.0%) both started in Lancashire, with Allan Nyom and James McClean completing a makeshift back four.

Gareth McAuley and Jonny Evans – the latter linked with a move to Man City – remain sidelined, leaving Pulis with little scope to rest his well-owned starting centre-backs – aside from fielding fringe members of the squad in midweek cup fixtures, that is.

That, clearly, is not going to happen. Whether the extra shifts for the centre-halves come back to bite at a later date remains to be seen.

Capoue scores again

For many managers – although clearly not Pulis – an early League Cup exit is a case of losing the battle but winning the war.

So Watford boss Marco Silva might have talked of a 3-2 home loss to Bristol City as ‘a disappointing result’ and ‘a bad night’, but getting back to a Premier League campaign from which they’ve accrued four well-earned points already will be a major consolation.

And so will the goal scoring form of midfielder Etienne Capoue.

The Frenchman was the first major FPL bandwagon of last season, and his final tally of 131 points – from a starting price of just 4.5 – persuaded more than 5% of managers to take a punt on their man starting the new campaign in similarly explosive fashion.

Alas, he didn’t start it all until a ten-minute cameo in the second match at Bournemouth, but even that gave him just enough time to score the Hornets’ second goal of a 2-0 win.

Capoue did start against Bristol City, however. And he scored again. His lack of Premier League pitch-time has prompted a drop in both his ownership, currently at 5.6%, and his price, to 5.4.

Two goals in as many matches might spark a re-evaluation but he’s unlikely to gain too much traction while the Richarlison option retains Watford starts.

Priced at just 6.0 and subject to 81,000 transfers in so far ahead of Gameweek 3, the Brazilian played the full 90 minutes last night, but the closest he came to scoring was when a shot hit the post.

At the back, Jose Holebas’ avid collection of yellow cards – he amassed 15 last season – continued with a pair of them against the Robins which means he will sit out the Brighton fixture.

Unlike Holebas, fit-again Troy Deeney started and finished the cup tie to earn his first minutes of the campaign. Adrian Mariappa grabbed a late consolation goal for the Hornets.

Three Swans also a-scoring

The FPL appeal of Swansea City assets has thus far evolved entirely around their price.

Angel Rangel is currently in 17.6% of squads solely because of his 4.0 value, although he did get his first minutes of the season – a full 90 of them – in the 4-1 win at MK Dons.

At least midfielder Tom Carroll actually plays league matches; a fact that has persuaded 6.2% of managers to invest 4.5 in him.

He was also in action at Stadium MK and earned an assist, but it was others who caught the eye.

Leroy Fer netted twice, Tammy Abraham opened his Swansea account and Jordan Ayew was also on the scoresheet as Paul Clement’s men put two goalless league defeats behind them.

The Swans’ schedule now eases, with a trip to Spurs the one major test until Gameweek 10.

Budget striker options Abraham (5.5) and Ayew (5.0) have now started all three matches this season. Together with midfielder Fer, they’ll be hoping to bring their midweek form to Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere…

Jermain Defoe (7.9) made his first start for Bournemouth but failed to score in a 2-1 win at Birmingham. The 3.7%-owned striker has lost both price and managers on the back of a quiet start to the season.

Only three players – Adam Smith, Steve Cook and Ryan Fraser – kept their places from the Cherries side that lost to Watford on Saturday. Fraser and Marc Pugh got the goals at St Andrew’s.

James McArthur scored both goals as Crystal Palace registered their first win under Frank de Boer.

The Eagles beat Ipswich Town 2-1, with the teams making 18 changes between them.

The 12.1%-owned Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy allayed any doubts over an ankle injury picked up in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton by making the bench for the trip to Sheffield United.

There were a mere 16 changes (eight apiece) in this match, with Harry Maguire, Wilfred Ndidi and Christian Fuchs the only players to keep their places from the weekend.

Maguire picked up a knock for a clattering first half challenge but played on and was only subbed late on with the Foxes ahead. Manager Craig Shakespeare declined his centre-back as “fine” post-match.

The Foxes won 4-1, with goals from Demarai Gray, Ahmed Musa and a double from Islam Slimani.

Brighton bounced back from that Leicester defeat with a 1-0 win over Barnet.

James Tilley scored the winner for the Seagulls. Manager Chris Hughton went full Monty and changed his entire team for the encounter which included a first start – and booking – for Anthony Knockaert, who was withdrawn immediately after half-time.

He's got the No.2 shirt so looks first choice (lol). Spurs aren't really close on signing a new RB and time is running out.

Loads of thinkpieces online about how bad he is and how he's ruining Spurs which I find hilarious.

I read something about that being resolved. It was a charge relating to an assault on a police officer. Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Steady Eddies v Flash Harrys

On last night's Scoutcast we discussed how Pogba could be an Alli like player this season - prone to exciting goals, while Mkhitaryan is the steady scoring player that hovers around the penalty box supply others - a bit like Eriksen.

Which player do you favour - the flash harrys like Pogba, Alli or the steady eddies like Eriksen - who can quietly rack up 7 pts in a 2-1 loss (v CHE at the weekend) or Mkhitaryan who has barely had a close range effort this season but is among the highest scoring mids.

Mikhi looks the safest option.. He's always up front compared to Pogba, he's the creator, he will get more assists, and the goals will come too (just check pre-season, or stats when he was at Dortmund, that form is coming back).. Pogba has more chances of blank weeks.. But I can't see Mikhi blank if UTD is winning !

I wouldn't compartmentalise Eriksen into the steady Eddie category. He can score from distance and showed last year he can haul. If anything he should score more goals this campaign compared to last and his early stats look promising.

This is a little like asking me if I'd rather have a more eye-pleasing golf swing or an ability to score well with an ugly swing.

I watched the first half SWN/Man U and I felt Miki was somewhat off the pace as a fantasy prospect.

One thing that has been overlooked in the Pogba v Miki debate is the penalty box touches. Miki has only had three so far which tells me he is going to be of little goal threat. Pog is a clear winner for me at this stage.

I don't care how flash someone is - players are judged on their points and that is all that matters.

I prefer Mikhi and Eriksen. I think they will score similar to Pogba and Alli over an extended period and I wouldn't captain them, so I just pick based on type of player I enjoy watching -intricate, technical players.

I once had a midfield of Silva, Hazard, Cazorla and Mata and loved it!

I think Pogba could become more of a Steady Eddie than people think. Look at Mourinho's tactics; when Manchester United fail to break down teams Mourinho rotates the formation and plays Pogba in a CAM/CF role. This allows Pogba to get into a more attacking role therefore leading to shots in the box. When Manchester United feel the pressure in games this will continue to happen. Pogba has all the attributes to perform in the attacking role especially with the strength and pace to create incredible scoring chances for himself.

Important note: When Manchester United perform Pogba normally gets points so as I see it most weeks will be a win/win situation with him.

When it is a coin toss like Pogba and Mkhitaryan, and everybody agrees you absolutely need one, it is probably worth getting in both, as a doubling up differential. Has worked wonders for me earlier in ML's (Eriksen/Alli, Firmino/Coutinho, Suarez/Sturridge etc).
The reason why they are very popular, is because they are very good performers, for their price.
So if you want to take advantage, you need to double up and field a Flashing Eddie combo 🙂

I think it's too early to compare Pogba with Alli.

Alli plays forward like a second striker. Pogba has just been bombing forward after Fellaini comes on. Mkhitaryan will have an Eriksen-like role though, but again, we'll have to wait and see.

For midfielders, if you're not going to captain them, Steady Eddies are better imo, as they are more likely to provide you more returns for however long you decide to keep them.

I dont think that Mkhi vs Pogba situation is the same we had last year (and in less extent this year) with Eriksen vs Alli. Pogba is nothing Alli is - the latter plays in a front3 or no10, always in action, while Pogba is a CM, who raids penalty box only with Felaini on board.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but Mkhi has no corners and almost no FK's, so its hard to compare him with Eriksen.

Alli and Eriksen are both better fpl assets than ManU duo, thats why they cost more. But for me while it is hard to choose between Spurs mids, I dont have doubts when it comes to United - Mkhi is my pick all the way.

Also, we havnt seen ManU playing top opponents. I think that in these games Pogbas potential will be very limited to CM role, but Mkhi'll still have simillar threat.

I don't really see the difference, for instance:

      Steady Eddie scores 6, 8, 6, 8, 6, 8....
      Flash Harry scores 14, 2, 2, 10, 2, 12....

Well you'll get the idea! 😉

What's the difference? The only thing that matters is points, no matter how they come...

Eriksen had 8 goals and 20 assists in 36 starts last season, or 0.78 attacking returns per game. He blanked 19 times (53% of starts) and got multiple attacking returns 8 times (22% of starts).

Alli had 18 goals and 11 assists in 35 starts last season, or 0.83 attacking returns per game. He blanked 13 times (37% of starts) and got multiple attacking returns 8 times (23% of starts).

In other words, Alli was the much steadier option, being a more consistent fantasy points scorer last season. The only reason Eriksen kept up with him was his clear superiority in the BPS - he managed 30 bonus points, or 1.07 bonus points per attacking return, whilst Alli earned 17, or just 0.59 bonus points per attacking return. This was reflected in GW1, where Eriksen picked up full bonus with two assists, and Alli didn't pick up any despite scoring.

This means that in the less frequent matches that the flashier Eriksen did score or assist, he was more explosive, as bonus points boosted his total. That saw him average 6.1 points per start to Alli's 6.4 points per start.

What I'm really saying is that I don't think assists actually give a steadier stream of points than goals do - you do get more points per goal than assist, but the likes of De Bruyne and Fabregas are only appealing fantasy options at their prices because they're so strong in the BPS. Mkhitaryan has been the stronger performer in the BPS than Pogba so far, which bears out this theory. Pogba gets more points for goals than Mkhitaryan does assists, but Mkhitaryan gets more bonus per assist than Pogba does per goal, which even things out.

Goals or assists, I'm not concerned by. More consistent fantasy options like Alli are more appealing than players like Eriksen to me, because you can be more confident that, if you get them in for a run of good fixtures, they'll be in the points. Eriksen is one to keep long term for me - he's an absolutely first class fantasy asset over the season, and he's started very well, but he'll blank much more often than he hits double figures - I think if you get him in, it needs to be a long-term pick.

Depends, think I prefer Steady Eddies in midfield this year as the Flash Harrys hog the striker spots.

Currently have Mikhitaryan and Eriksen over Alli and Pogba to be more consistent to support the explosoveness of Kane and Lukaku upfront.

Hi Guys, what's everyone's opinion on Vokes still being a starting 11, now that they've brought in Wood? Do you think he'll play 2 up front, or if not who will be the more favourable? Is it enough to drop Vokes?

    1. Captain Roberto
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Why do you think Vokes would lose his position? As the reserve striker Barnes is more likely to lose out to Woods, I would have thought.

Because Woods is their record signing and they usually play 1 up front. Fair question. I'm from NZ so.following closely. Consensus is they will try to play 2 up front.

Firm as he's on pens and Pool have such pacy forwards (Mane, Salah etc.) they'll get a ton of pens.

Not buying into the Mkhitaryan hype, shouldn't be compared with Eriksen on the scoutcast

3 of his assists have been lucky in the last 10 minutes of games

No point comparing them really - different price points.

Mkhitaryan offers value for money, doesn't mean he's a better option than Eriksen.

Also you can't complain about a set piece assist when one of the pros to Eriksen is that he's on set pieces 🙂

      1. HALFSPACE

My point was you wrote one of Mkhitaryan's assists off because it was a set piece yet that's one of the benefits that's stated for many players, including Eriksen.

Mkhitarayan has historically een a massive goal threat.

I think this is what excites me most about Mkhitarayan. He has been getting all these points and assists and he hasn't even started scoring yet...

        This is right.

Eriksen needs to be compared to Alli, KDB and the Liverpool mids as they are in the same price range.

Mkhitaryan needs to be compared to his rivals in the 8-8.5 category like Pogba and perhaps Sigurdsson when fixtures improve.

As players there are comparisons - high assist and bonus potential - not as high goal threat as team mates.

But as fantasy options to get in both have different sets of rivals due to price.

Agree. 3 assists are lucky because they were in the final 10 minutes. The fourth is lucky because it was a set piece. Such a lucky player this Mkhi guy.

      1. Captain Roberto
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

He didn't say they were lucky BECAUSE they were in the last ten minutes. He said they were lucky AND in the last ten minutes.

I'm not sure about his assists being lucky though, they were all good passes. And it doesn't matter when you score. The game lasts 90 minutes and FF is geared towards scoring goals, not winning matches.

        1. Captain Roberto
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

well, technically he didn't say AND but it was implied in the sentence structure.

Is that what you meant Poch?
Scoring goals late on is a sign a team is determined which will likely produce greater number of attempts on goal late on in matches as they keep up the pressure on weaker sides, like the Man Utd of Sir Alex

Agreed. When will fantasy football players wake up and realize that football matches only last 80 minutes and that it's pure luck that the referee decided to play 15 minutes of added time.

Mkhi and Pogba so lucky to be involved in two 95 minute matches. Avoid at all costs.

United looked pretty turgid until Swansea subbed off a CB and DM for two out-and-out wingers. Of course, late goals count - but plenty of people seem to think United have suddenly become a great attacking side - I didn't see much evidence of that until Swansea committed tactical suicide.

Is it madness to consider Daniels -> Jones (-4) as a long term move?

Otherwise I'm playing Dunk this week.

Who would you play this week: Suttner (wat) or Fraser (MCI)?

Tough, probably fraser. If it's a close call, always go with the attacker.
