Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League and Carabao Cup

A buccaneering Liverpool blast their way into the group stages of the Champions League, with rotation the almost inevitable consequence.

Meanwhile, the Carabao Cup claims Premier League scalps in Southampton and Newcastle, but West Ham, Huddersfield, Burnley and Stoke City all ease through.

Here are the notes from a busy Wednesday of action.

Liverpool will have to give it a rest

Jurgen Klopp never lacks for enthusiasm at the best of times.

Having overseen a pulsating 4-2 win over Hoffenheim that ensured Liverpool’s qualification for the Champions League group stages, his response to the press began with a heartfelt ‘Yipee!’.

The animated German seems to be embracing the concept of rotation in the same full-on manner.

He threw 25.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers a curve ball by benching Mo Salah for last weekend’s home match with Crystal Palace – one of five changes from the first leg win in Germany.

Last night, Klopp reverted to the same side which won that first match 2-1, meaning returns for Emre Can (7.6%), Trent Alexander-Arnold (3.0%) and Alberto Moreno (1.9%).

Can scored twice against Hoffenheim, while the young full-back was withdrawn around the hour mark. Whether either occurrence guarantees their selection for Sunday’s visit of Arsenal is hard to tell.

What we do know is that Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have now played four straight matches this season and currently look vital to the Liverpool cause.

Both were in superb form against the Germans, with the Brazilian scoring one and setting up Can to net an outstanding team goal that put Liverpool 3-0 on the night. Mane, meanwhile, was the best player on the pitch, but had to make do with just an assist for Can’s deflected opener.

Salah scored the other goal, tapping in after Georginio Wijnaldum’s shot had hit the post. Jordan Henderson supplied the assist for Firmino’s second-half effort.

We are surely likely to be spared severe rotation this weekend, but it may well be an entirely different matter when the group stages start in mid-September.

The Reds will find out their opponents in this afternoon’s draw, but there is a worst-case scenario involving Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Celtic.

Whoever the opponents, Liverpool’s schedule will virtually demand sacrifice – either in the league or Europe – on at least one occasion.

The most likely rotation hazard will come in mid-October when Klopp’s players return from a second international break to entertain Man United, play the third group match in Europe and then travel to Spurs – all in the space of eight days.

That’s the sort of mini-run that can almost define a season. It will certainly test the coach’s selection skills, Liverpool’s squad strength and our patience as Fantasy managers.

Saints shift shape and slide out

Southampton’s third straight home match of the season ended in their first defeat, 0-2 to Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

Those last two words should temper some of the significance of last night’s loss, particularly as Mauricio Pellegrino made major changes both to his personnel and the side’s shape.

Six players who helped beat West Ham 3-2 at the weekend dropped out, while Pellegrino also switched to a back three of Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and new signing Jan Bednarek.

Should the system survive, that could be good news for managers who have made Ryan Bertrand (16.2%) and Cedric (12.2%) Southampton’s most-owned FPL assets, with the pair likely to offer increased attacking threat as wing-backs.

But Pellegrino has always previously favoured a back four, and a loss to lower league opponents is hardly likely to endear him to an alternative formation.

In truth, the defeat was waiting to happen for the Saints. They laboured to a 0-0 opening day draw against Swansea City and the win over the Hammers was achieved against ten men and with the help of two penalties.

Southampton’s schedule remains undeniably inviting, with a Gameweek 6 visit from Man United the only real wrinkle all the way through to mid-November.

The side’s form, however, is yet to convince us that they are in the best position take full advantage.

At least the 5.8% of managers who own Manolo Gabbiadini could take some solace from the fact that strike rival Charlie Austin failed to impress on his first start of the season. The Italian was afforded just 14 minutes off the bench last night.

Allen shines for Stoke

Mark Hughes made eight changes as Stoke City made short work of Rochdale.

Only Joe Allen, Kurt Zouma and Erik Pieters survived the cut from the weekend win over Arsenal, with the Welsh midfielder producing two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory.

Peter Crouch and Ramadan Sobhi were the other goalscorers on a night when Hughes again used a back three, while handing Josh Tymon a debut at wing-back.

Pieters – surprisingly utilised as a right wing-back – laid on assists for both Allen’s goals. Bojan supplied the assist for Sobhi’s goal.

Owned by 3.7%, Allen’s 5.5 price tag could make him a very attractive budget option should he manage to bring this sort of goal scoring to the league matches.

He does have previous for such things, ending last season on 118 points built on the back of six goals and three assists.

But the attacking prowess of new men Jese and Eric Choupo-Moting, who were unused substitutes last night, is likely to keep Allen employed in a deeper role against Premier League opposition.

One factor that could work in the Welshman’s attacking favour is a hamstring injury to Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss international didn’t even make the squad against Rochdale and remains a major doubt for Sunday’s trip to West Brom.

Another factor, however, takes the shine off owning any Stoke assets, Allen or otherwise – the Potters have to face both Manchester sides and Chelsea over the next six Gameweeks.

Elsewhere…

Sean Dyche made eight changes as Burnley eased past Lancashire rivals Blackburn 2-0.

Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor made their debuts, while Jon Walters was handed a first start for the Clarets, only to go off injured just before half-time.

He was replaced by record signing Chris Wood, but the striker failed to find the net, with the goals – and assists – coming from Jack Cork and Robbie Brady.

Dyche downplayed Walters’ injury post-match.

“I’m not sure how right he was and eventually he had to come off, so we’ll see how he is, but we don’t think it’s anything too serious.”

West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate came off the bench for his first appearance since recovering from a long-standing wrist injury as the Hammers saw off Cheltenham Town 2-0.

Coach Slaven Bilic sent out a much-changed side, with Javier Hernandez, Joe Hart, Aaron Cresswell and Jose Fonte all named among the substitutes.

Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew scored the goals. Mark Noble assisted the opener, with Sakho teeing up Ayew for the second.

You would have got excellent odds on Rotherham being the first team to breach Huddersfield’s defence this season, but the Terriers kept up their 100% win record with a 2-1 victory anyway.

Coach David Wagner made 10 changes to his team, as goals from Philip Billing and Joe Lolley secured a third round trip to Crystal Palace.

Billing netted a penalty after Laurent Depoitre was brought down in the box, while Kasey Palmer teed up Lolley for the second.

Ten changes were also made by Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, but his Newcastle charges responded rather less positively, losing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest after extra-time.

Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring early, before a Rolando Aarons’ equaliser ensured another 30 minutes of play from which the Championship side emerged victorious.

The evening’s assists went to Aarons and Mo Diame.

    https://www.arsenal.com/news/wenger-on-whether-alexis-will-start-anfield

Those were some of the questions Arsene Wenger was asked in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, and this is what he said:

    - on the team news
The early team news is that Koscielny is back available for selection and Alexis has worked very hard to be back again and he is available as well.

    - on how Alexis has looked in training
He works very hard, focused and gives absolutely everything. He loves to play so much that is is sometimes difficult to stop him but he looks absolutely ready. He has not played for a long time so I will have to decide what I do with him but he looks ready to play.

    - on whether Alexis will start
I will have to make that decision. It is Thursday today and we play on Sunday and he looks in good shape, he has worked very hard.

    Also worth mentioning: https://www.arsenal.com/news/wenger-gives-latest-ox-alexis-futures

    - on whether Alexis will travel with Chile
Yes, of course. Chile are at an important part of their qualifiers, they are not through yet and he is available to travel to Chile.

            "KFC- Kane, Firmino, Chicharito"

With Sanchez looking like staying and ready for action in GWK 3 who is considering getting him in?

Exactly, he's currently only at 2.1% ownership.
He'll be protected from a price rise for maybe one game week as he's come out of the RED but then if he scores it'll be a mass bundle, especially if Kane blanks again

Not very keen on getting him in before Arsenal sort out themselves first. Would like to see how Sanchez & Laca would play together. It could mean that Laca has more chances for him to score, making him a better prospect as well.
However, this is all speculation. Wait and see will probably be my approach.

two up top i'd imagine. Sanchez has been played as the main forward before and would likely thrive with a player with Lacazette's skill set

Will consider Lacazette if he looks like he can keep up with Sanchez for his price.

There are a lot of good options in midfield, and Sanchez would replace one of them. Whereas there seem to be fewer options in premium strikers at the moment, so it would be easier to fit Lacazette in.

Two things are very important to me : penalties and if he is playing up front. With Laca around i don't think he gets any of those two. And most of his hauls las year came from playing up front and having penalties. Think he'll do ok, with ocasionaly hauls but i think that Spurs,Liverpool and United mids can match his points for lower price.

Definitely no. That is, until we see him live on the pitch.

In the history of fantasy football, this is the first season he comes after so much trouble (vague future at club, injury, not a single friendly played etc.) He never started another season like this. And you cannot bet on this, not at 11.9 anyway. It is not like returning from injury or an international in Chile. We cannot know how his body and form will react. Nor can he. It is a gamble I would not take even if he was 10.0

      It's a no for me.

With Lacazette and Giroud on the scene he isn't going to be centre forward where he got most of his points last season.

Cazorla is their number one penalty taker but still injured, I'd assume Lacazette will be next in line being their new £52m front man and converting 11/14 pens he took last season.

Then there is price. He's too expensive IMO. I'd have to sacrifice Kane or Lukaku which for the forseable I'm just not prepared to do. I can swap Mhki and Eriksen but would end up with Sanchez and someone like Mooy.

Things might change and he may become essential but I just don't see it this season.

Sanchez has been an odd case for a long time, one of those players where timing when you own him (or not) is important. He can be deadly when playing in a more central role and far less effective from a wide berth (simplified version).

At 11.9m he's even more awkward to fit in than he has been previously as the amount of 9.5m+ attackers has increased this season. Mané, Eriksen and Lukaku have started well and one imagines it won't be long before the likes of Alli, Kane, Hazard and Morata will join them. And that's without looking at KDB, Jesus and Aguero, any of whom is capable of a purple patch.

That being the case, I would want to see some very specific things before I would consider Sanchez. I'd want to see form; I'd want to see him playing in a central role (maybe 2nd striker in a 3-5-2) and I'd need to see that he is clearly a better option than Lacazette. Getting Sanchez would require pure guesswork for me right now.

The bigger picture is that we are either going to need to pick our premium attackers and stick with them or to be willing to lose TV if necessary by switching between them this season. That will be interesting. Having got Kane in now, I am already looking at my jump-off point for Lukaku for exactly that reason. I can't see the long-term value in having both at the same time when that damages the rest of the squad so much.

More than anything, Sanchez' return interests me more in terms of where he plays relative to Lacazette than anything else. Because Lukaku ➡ Lacazette is definitely an option I am considering for GW4. Not that I especially want to lose Lukaku. But something has to give. 😕

Ruth, what about the argument that Kane/Lukaku allows you to "fire and forget" up front, while mixing and matching in the midfield? As a current owner of both, I know how it hamstrings the rest of the squad, but I feel like the alternative (i.e., only keeping one of them in order to strengthen the midfield) just moves the question mark of form & fixtures from midfield to forward, where you have fewer players to mix and match.

I think there are or will be forwards at 10.0 to 10.5 that will hardly be risks. I think there are also forwards around 8.5 that aren't risky either, especially if picked for good fixture runs.

In the end it's about captaincy with the super-premiums. Plan your armband some weeks in advance and that will tell you what to do. That's my approach anyway.

After Xmas when the TV is above 105m it will be easier of course.

Lukaku to Lacazette is what I'm considering too, would free up crucial funds to make everything work.

      Sadly, no.

Sanchez is magnificant football player, brilliant to watch and to adore. But 12.0 price tag is too much for someone who'll never play OOP this season. He should be at least 11.0 for me to consider.

Although, we have to see him and Laca together in action. It could be the case that Laca'll go deeper sometimes to accomodate Sanchez in more frontal positons. Anyway, even if thats the case, 12.0 is still too much. We already have one 12.5 headace

      going to wait and see.
      1. Is he Sanchez of old or the sulky one hiding out on the left wing like at the end of last season?
      2. He would (for most sides) need a downgrade of at least one striker. Not sure there's a lot of value in the sub-10m striker bracket.
      3. Hazard's back soon. 1.4m cheaper.
      4. Another premium option but the argument made by many (about other similar value players) is that if you're not going to captain him regularly is he worth 11.9/12m?

He would have to be uber essential for me to consider him at that price as it would mean losing either Kane or Lukaku. If he can provide the bullets for Lacazette then he might be the one to crowbar into an expensive front line instead. We also have the spectre of Hazard looming into view, a full 1.4 mil cheaper in a resurgent Chelsea side.

Not interested this year, hard to look past Kane and Lukaku for captaincy given their ownership and form (when it comes for Kane) Sanchez would a luxury at the expense of the rest of the team.

Arsenal look like they'll be all over the place again this season, on the pitch and off it.

Why people are making this transfer this week is slightly puzzling. Majority of people have said that they expect it not to pay off this week, so why not just wait, bag KDBs points, roll a FT, then make it GW4?

Because of 0,2 mil plus, after those 2 weeks I admit to make a mistake to bring him in. I was hesitating from the beginning but picked him instead of Eriksen as I didn't want to double up Spurs. Now I regret.
