Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

      Quite clearly C, imo.

      Coutinho is now considered a deeper lying midfielder. Will only play LW if Mané or Sarah are rotated/rested.

    Isn't owning 2 Liverpool mids on a WC a bit much for the City fixture?

        Wtf? Kompany has been awful for 2 years between injuries. 2 average games and he's now a clean sheet magnet?! He bulked up too much, and lost a yard of pace. So he struggles recovering after his rash attempts. LFC could punish him. (If they get the ball of the silvas that is)

      I've always been a fan of doubling up if a team is capable of big hauls. Liverpool have been that team for a number of seasons now.

      From Suarez and Sturridge to Coutinho and one of mane or Firmino last year, doubling up has worked.

      I've salah and am v likely to get Firmino , esp with Burnley dropping by Anfield gwk 5 and Liverpool's ability to turn on the style against top four rivals.

      City though do have encouraging defensive stats... but over next few I think those with two liv attackers will prosper.

        I'm taking out KDB this week and I'm really struggling to pick between a straight swap with Silva or going for salah. I don't have any Liverpool assets atm and KDB is the only city asset I have. I'm leaning towards Silva based on home form and fixtures up to the ITB where ill almost certainly be wild carding. Anyone got any thoughts on which option they'd go for and why?

        I've always been cautious of doubling up and cost is a factor too e.g. dele n Eriksen. However I've doubled Manu Pogba n Makh on a WC for price rises returns and form. Rotation is my biggest concern. Surprised to not read others doing same. Am I missing something?

      I have one player for the Liverpool City game and definitely think that is enough coverage. I don't have Firmino though and if I was on a wildcard would be tempted to double up. However sacrifices will have to be made to bring in two Liverpool attacking midfielders probably in the form of a Spurs or Utd player and we all saw how patchy Liverpool's form was last season

      For me it's not about form or fixtures, but about Coutinho. I remember an excellent piece of analysis on here last year that showed Firmino's output was significantly higher when Coutinho was NOT on the pitch. It seems almost inevitable that his return will reduce both Firmino's output plus all the other mids due to rotation. As such, doubling down on LIV seems a bit risky until we see how the situation plays out. It's easy to get seduced by the big points haul to date, but there's an elephant in the room that needs consideration. The only reason I've doubled down right now is so I can choose which to keep later on without the inevitable price rises.

      Unlike some like Jonty, I just can't double on any team's same area. I find it statistically lacking in value. It is a guarantee (if you believe in the team) but your chances of getting points from both players is diminished; when one scores the other does not. As such, if (on the basis of the imminent game alone) if the game ends 1-1 which is more likely to get points? Mane+Silva or Mane+Firmino. It cannot be the latter, mathematically.

In defence we pursue clean sheets (so I have Bertrand+Yoshida). But elsewhere we pursue goals and assists. So I can have a forward and midfielder from the same team but two forwards or two midfielders would not work, in my opinion. As such, I would never have Pogba and Mikhi together.

          In that case you can have Firmino and Salah/Mane. Remember that Salah/Mane are classified as midfielders but they are far more attacking when compared to mkhi/pogba. They are basically wide forwards and not midfielders.

        Seems stupid indeed, but Kane's stats are far ahead and has favourable fixtures. Also the addition of Pogba would mean triple United, which I'm against especially this early in the league.

    Just to add my fivepenneth about England having not been very good since the PL started and the influx of foreign players.

    We always concentrate on having not won a major trophy since 1966.

    Well the fact is we invented the game in it's current form around 1870 and not only have we not won anything since 1966 but we won stuff all before 1966 either.
