Liverpool’s wide men get among the goals again, while Alvaro Morata and Gylfi Sigurdsson both bag a brace apiece for Spain and Iceland respectively.

Alexis Sanchez shrugs off an injury scare to play the full 90 minutes for Chile and Swansea’s cut-price frontman Tammy Abraham delivers for the England Under 21s.

Here’s the notes on a busy night of action…

Liverpool trio all in action

Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane continue to dominate Fantasy Premier League managers’ thoughts.

Only Romelu Lukaku is owned by more bosses than the Brazilian among strikers, while the Reds’ wide men remain in the top four for midfielders.

All were in action last night.

Firmino started but drew a blank as Brazil were held 1-1 in Colombia, while Mo Salah scored an early, and decisive, goal as Egypt saw off Uganda 1-0, with West Brom defender Ahmed Hegazi completing a second 90 minutes of the international break.

Mane, meanwhile, was the pick of the bunch. He found the net and added an assist as Senegal drew 2-2 in Burkina Faso, with Everton’s Idrissa Gueye setting up the Liverpool man’s goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have a mixed schedule to come – mci, BUR, lei, new, MAN, tot – but that’s not dampened the desire for the trio as all three are in the top six for Gameweek 4 transfers-in.

Firmino (260,000+) leads the way and played just 63 minutes over the international break, Salah is third with 162,000 new owners and 180 minutes of action under his belt, while Mane (142,000) is sixth, having also played two full matches for his country.

Philippe Coutinho will also be on Klopp’s mind. Last season’s talisman started, scored and played the full match for Brazil against Ecuador before being handed a further 15 minutes from the bench against Colombia yesterday.

Any doubts about his fitness seem to have been laid to rest, but what state he is in mentally following his protracted non-move to Barcelona is yet to be discovered.

Klopp has made it clear that he wants to welcome the 8.8-priced star back into the fold, but FPL managers remain cautious – a mere 3,600+ have taken a punt on him this week, and he is owned overall by just 2.0%.

Elsewhere, Welsh tyro Ben Woodburn was at it again, providing an assist as Wales won 2-0 in Moldova.

Silva shines on mixed night for City stars

David Silva produced a goal and assist for Spain in an 8-0 rout of Lichtenstein.

The Man City midfielder started both matches for his country over the international break and his contribution last night built on a solid start to the domestic campaign.

He has 16 points from two assists and four bonus – a decent return for his 8.1 price tag, particularly when compared to Kevin De Bruyne’s (9.9) eight-point haul to date.

While the Belgian continues to be the most sold player of the Gameweek, with 185,000 parting company, 68,0000+ new managers have made Silva City’s most popular new acquisition.

He now sits in 9.5% of squads (De Bruyne is in 18.8%), but faces a decidedly mixed bag of short-term fixtures which involves Liverpool at home and Chelsea away sandwiching a trip to Watford and a visit from Crystal Palace.

Competition for places in City’s midfield is beyond intense, but both Silva and De Bruyne have played the full 270 minutes so far, and it would be a major surprise – even by the reliably unreliable Pep Guardiola’s standards – if they don’t feature prominently against Liverpool.

Who plays up front, however, is anyone’s guess.

Gabriel Jesus has started all three domestic matches to date, although he was hauled off against Everton as Guardiola was forced to re-group following the dismissal of Kyle Walker.

Sergio Aguero was dropped to the bench for the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth as Guardiola abandoned his two-striker policy for a Jesus-only front line.

The Argentinian travelled thousands of miles to spend a further 180 minutes on his backside over the international break, whereas Jesus followed up a full match against Ecuador with a 30-minute run-out in Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Colombia.

Given that their Etihad encounter underway on Saturday lunchtime, Man City and Liverpool have chartered a private jet to get their Samba stars back with plenty of time to spare.

Elsewhere…

Europe
Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata’s excellent international break continued in Lichtenstein as he scored twice and provided an assist in Spain’s 8-0 demolition job. Having also found the net against Italy at the weekend, he’s been subject to over 224,000 transfers-in this Gameweek – second only to Firmino ahead of a trip to Leicester.

West Brom forward Hal Robson-Kanu and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey were on the score sheet for Wales as they left it late to beat Moldova 2-0. Burnley striker Sam Vokes set up Ramsey’s clincher.

Ramsey came into the international break with his fitness in doubt. He has finished it with two starts and a goal – encouraging signs as Arsenal embark on a decent run of fixtures (BOU, che, WBA, BRI, wat) in which the home matches in particular offer the chance for the 3%-owned midfielder to build on his opening day strike against Leicester City.

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson managed the full 180 minutes for Iceland over the break, and he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Ukraine last night.

Back-to-back clashes with Spurs and Man United have ensured that the playmaker’s ownership remains at just 5% in FPL but with the fixtures set to turn in Gameweek 6, heavy investment is expected as Sigurdsson looks to replicate last season’s career-high 181 points.

And Swansea’s Tammy Abraham produced a goal and assist for the England Under 21s in a 3-0 win over Latvia.

After opening his account for the season in the Gameweek 3 win over Palace, Abraham – at 5.5 – now boasts an excellent upcoming schedule, with home encounters against Newcastle, Watford, Huddersfield and Leicester in the six Gameweeks.

Leicester’s Demarai Gray and Huddersfield’s Kasey Palmer also found the net, with Everton midfielder Tom Davies supplying the assist for Palmer’s effort.

South America
An Alexis Sanchez injury scare proved to be unfounded as he played the full 90 minutes in Bolivia as Chile lost 1-0, while Chelsea’s Willian opened the scoring for Brazil in Colombia.

Africa
Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba finds himself in the top eight for transfers-in this week on the back of a nine-point haul in Gameweek 3 and a very attractive 4.0 price tag.

So more than 126,000 new managers – out of 8.0% in total – would have been delighted to hear that he had opened the scoring for Congo DR against Tunisia last night.

Less pleasing was the fact that Mbemba then limped off with a knock just before the hour-mark that puts his participation for the trip to Swansea City on Sunday in doubt.

His Toon team-mate Christian Atsu recorded a second assist of the international break as Ghana romped to a 5-1 win over Congo.

Man United’s Eric Bailly and new Spurs signing Serge Aurier played the full 90 minutes as Ivory Coast lost at home to Gabon 2-1, with Southampton’s Mario Lemina scoring a long-range screamer for the visitors.

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez deadline day whereabouts were a mystery, but he was found in time to turn out for Algeria in a 0-1 loss to Zambia last night.

Australasia
Huddersfield’s most popular FPL asset, the 11.5%-owned midfielder Aaron Mooy, returned from illness to play the full match for Australia, providing both assists in a 2-1 win over Thailand.

Brighton keeper Mat Ryan also started.

So again I'm struggling to see what was wrong with Marks WC team? Ive taken a similar approach and think now was a good time to make the changes. I say nice job!

What was better about his team before? He now has:
3 Premium Strikers all on pens
3 premium Mids are in good form.
Great defence and a budget one.
Got rotating options in def and mid for last slot.

Great defence? How would you know?

Whether Mee and Naughton are good options remains to be seen. And even if they are, they are just rotating defenders. Same goes for a Liverpool defender. All he basically did with his WC was downgrade all his defenders to cheaper ones to bring in Firmino. Hardly necessary. Definitely should've saved. Now it's practically hits galore if he wants to upgrade his defence. You spread the funds too much and you lose flexibility.

No issue and a little harsh by many i think. Can't judge until we have seen the fruits in a month or so.

Just suprised he shipped Tammy and didnt get Alonso but who am i to question a top 10 HOF manager.

Think he will come out smelling of roses like usual tbh.

Im on WC and I shipped Alonso out believe it or not. Don't get me wrong he is great but I think there's more value in like of Jones and SOU currently. Last season all CHE defs scored well not just Alonso due to many clean sheets. They would need to replicate that this season again (but now with CL) for Alonso to score as much as he did last season even with his attacking points.

Yeah not saying I would get Alonso I just find it surprising mark didn't as he likes him and he got RLC and Carroll so I expected the WC was used in order to get him if you see what I mean.

I agree with you and mark, probably more value in jones etc

I think the main issues were that if you are wildcarding now for price you would be better off doing that for the second international break - which has season after season proved more lucrative.

Also there are still unsettled issues - although arguably when is an issue ever settled.

There's no big fixture swing to take advantage of.

If you are to wildcard now do it to really shake up the team, rather than just tweak. Going for Alonso for example or (see hot topic) a midfield double up for Spurs or Man Utd at the expense of the very pricey Kane or Luakaku are examples of using a wildcard to try something different and potentially lucrative.

I think they were the main issues covered on the scoutcast.

As also said though - it could work out and I'm not sure there's any 3-4 gwk period when we wouldn't welcome a defender refresh. I know many will around the gwk 6-8 point when Everton's improve - so too Leicester's.

It's too similar to his previous team imo. Maybe that's a silly way of looking at it but all he's really done is downgrade a few players to get Firmino. I think that could've been done with -4 or -8. It's not a bad team by any means I just don't know if he needed to wildcard to get it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Premium striker versus their midfield supporting cast

A key issue that emerged on last night's Scoutcast was that to save money and gain more points a premium asset like Lukaku or Kane could be jettisoned in favour of their cheaper midfield team mates.

However, when it came to the captaincy some of us still didn't quite trust such cheaper assets with the armband.

This is particularly pertinent to wildcarders - but also to non wildcarders- particularly if Kane continues his barren run.

Which midfield duo do you think adequately cover the loss of a premium striker?

Can Eriksen and Alli trump Kane plus a cheaper mid?
Can Pogba na Mkhi trump Lukaku plus a cheaper mid?

I think they can total points but you would have to capt the right mid most weeks. With Kane or lukaku as capt over the cheap mid i think u win out overall

If it weren't for captaincies I think yes. They are better value. But you need one or two players that have that high price tag, because they offer that potential for explosive returns.

In my opinion players like Lukaku, Kane, Sanchez and possibly Morata are central to their teams attacking output and will deliver big hauls, so you need one or two of them. Liverpool obviously also has plenty of those options, it's just that they share the points more evenly, something I see City also doing this year.

So the way I am looking at it, I want 2 of the big strikers, coupled with 2 off Salah/Mane/Firmino, to supply steady points, possibly along with one of Alli/Eriksen or Mikhi/Pogba (Siggurdson will probably become a big factor soon also).

2 big heavy hitters up front also allows for a 4 point switch, should Sanchez start to fire.

For me the captaincy is key.

I trust Lukaku - I don't fully trust Mkhi or Pogba, as Mata, Martial, Rashford etc could all supply assists.

But for Spurs I think it is viable - Eriksen is so involved in the points - and bonus. If Kane is to score - usually Eriksen is involved. I think for a good spurs match Eriksen (c) is very viable.

The issue for me would also be you would have to captain the right option every week between Alli and Eriksen. Might be interesting to look at statistics on the games that they both delivered returns?

For me I just feel more secure with Eriksen due to involvement.

Alli is more explosive, Eriksen seems more reliable.

Captaincy decisions rely alot on individual confidence in players.

like that - in my head Eriksen is nice and dull -but actually he's really explosive from his breadth of points and Alli is more a steady Eddie.

That gives me even greater confidence to captain Eriksen as my own misguided bias give me security - while the reality shows that he is a great captain in terms of explosiveness.

I'm with you. I prefer a striker as captain. So have Lukaka for cap or Firminho/morata if a bad fixture. Midfield is a gamble for Pts. Kdb/silva. Erik/Dele. Pogba/mkh. Sala/mane/llana/Cout. I'm currently covering Kane by having Dele, Firminho covers other Liv options and Have both Mkh n Pog if Luk fails or I txfr him to Kane. Morata covers Chelsea and Mkh could be txfr to Silva or Cesc if either start firing and fixtures determine better options.

I don't trust Lukaka esp for pens. But he blows hot enough and is now in a high attacking outfit. I'd rather trust Kane but r doesn't yet have the chance creating power behind him and is overpriced imo ie I can do more with the money I save. I trust Sanchez, Jesus, Aguero, kdb n Silva but I don't trust Pepe n Wenger! It's just too much of a loss to risk captaining their assets at the moment imo

The big issue is, if you have Kane and Lukaku, can you get by with just captaining Kane?

These big hitters don't pull their weight in relation to the spend they free-up when you discount them for the captaincy.

I look at Lukaku's fixtures and wonder, how many of those will he be favoured over Kane with the armband - presuming Kane breaks this drought.

That's what tempts me to look at getting rid and spreading funds (which I haven't ruled out - last night's team was just the latest build of about 15 so far 😉 )

You hit the nail '- presuming Kane breaks this drought'.

Kane for me is a more reliable finisher but with Manus start (which has surprised me, even as a fan) Luk will get more of them. If he hadn't missed that penalty there'd be even more pressure on Kane holders.

I didn't think I could justify both at start of season. I went for the cheaper Lukaka but held cash to upgrade if Kane fired and Luk flopped. I'm still tentatively doing same but by holding 1 n not both I can have Alonso in def.

            Dont know why tho..

When we know Lukakus pointhauls vs lesser team, and Kanes record vs everyone, I dont think it will be long before we all have them both.

This is the question that was plaguing me. In the end I came to the conclusion that the answer is no.

I had Erikson and Kane last week and Ali was the one who got the points with no contribution from from my players.

If I do ditch Kane I do believe Eriksen is captain material.

Alli will prob get similar returns but will be more inconsistent.

Mkhi is not rotation proof with champions league coming up

Pogba has somewhat over performed in the early weeks and remains to be seen whether he can maintain his excellent FPL start.

If a cheap striker starts scoring premium points, which is very likely at some point, then I think you only need one striker at 10.5+, so Lukaku or Kane. Stick with one, captain him whenever possible. Expensive strikers are only good value as captaincy picks.

What this will do for your midfield value is immeasurable. There are so few good 7-8m options and so many great 8-9.5m options. You can then afford to upgrade right across that midfield. Having Eriksen or Alli, or even both can, yes, go some way to compensating for the lack of Kane when Spurs finally decide to start winning by big margins.

        100% agree with this.

What was Jonty's stat last year in one of the last Scoutcasts? Something along of the lines that there were 15 midfielders better value than strikers.

Going with Kane, Firm & Chich and a killer midfield.

I think both sets of mid's could trump, just need to find good cap's, not necessarily from those mid's either as presumably strikers such as Laca & Morata would enter the captaincy fray, along with Mane and the Liv's, a New Wave?

I agree with Jonty here that captaincy is key. Plus, owning two midfielders from the same team is poor strategy in my view, as they share points logically (unless, like in Liverpool, the midfielders are actually wide forwards). Both Kane and Lukaku are lone forwards. If they are involved 40% of goals, no two midfielders will reach that albeit being more expensive, plus there is the loss of explosiveness.

We really don't need to discuss coverage after all these years. It's an endless debate.

I think penalties are the deciding factor for me, which is why I usually go for the premium up front. I went for Firmino in GW1 at the expense of the midfield assets because he was heavily hinted to be on pens, and that's turned out to be a great decision for me. Similarly with Kane and Spurs; they seem to win a lot of pens with the likes of Alli making tricky runs into the box frequently.

That leaves Lukaku, who has a pretty poor pen record. If Pogba takes over then I'd seriously consider him instead (if he's the next in line), and use the funds generated elsewhere in my midfield. It's also why I'm reluctant to even entertain the thought of Morata with Hazard due back.

Captaincy is also an issue as mentioned above; I always feel uncomfortable captaining a midfielder.

TL;DR, I think Pogba and Mkhi can cover Lukaku (especially if Pogba gets pens), but not Kane and a cheaper mid.

I think you need at least one of them for the armband. I'm happy to captain Kane over the next 5 GWs so I'm going without Lukaku. Not gonna double up on United mids though. Rather use the funds freed up on Spurs and Liverpool mids who I think will score more points than Pogba.

    15. Rödallegabomb ᴿᴮ

I think there are enough options out there to go with one of the mids, as well as the heavy hitter up top.

I have both Kane and Lukaku, as well as Eriksen and Pogba in midfield.

Likewise on his wildcard, Mark managed to fit in Kane, Lukaku, Alli and Mhkitaryan.

He too went with the Carroll/RLC rotation which I've been rolling with, and it means you can afford to go down such a route where you'll be having both the premium striker and one of the midfielders.

It hasn't happened yet, but there will be weeks when the strikers will find the back of the net thrice, maybe more. Especially with the likes of Lukaku, who as of next week will probably have an effective ownership of over 100%*, those hauls will absolutely kill you.

*For those who don't know, effective ownership indicates the % of a players' points that contribute towards the average, by factoring in ownership and captaincy. If this is over 100%, their points contribute wholly and then some to the average, meaning even if you own them, your rank will suffer as a result of their points (if you didn't captain them) and even more so if you don't own them at all.

Whilst it isn't a very exciting method, we might just have to stick with the likes of Lukaku in our teams purely for defensive reasons - so we don't fall in rank too much because we don't own him. It's an unusual situation, because a lot of dead teams will have the armband slapped on him, and his ownership started off immidiately very high. Barring an injury, his effective ownership will remain astronomical all season meaning every week it will be dangerous going without.

      Elliot Krul
      Naughton Hegazi Davies Jones 4.0m
      Alli Eriksen Miki Pogba Salah

This allows you to rotate Naughton and Hegazi but more importantly allows you to have a 10m striker that you can captain?

Ignore premium forwards. Completely ignore. My most expensive forward is Jay Rodriguez, and that has allowed me to have premium midfield Alli-Eriksen-Pogba-Willian-Mane AND defence Alonso-Bertrand-Kolasinac-Valencia-Mee. Currently on 176 points, with no team problems.

I know he scored in GW38/GW1 but it just feels like a transfer waiting to happen until we get a proper update this weekend on Rose.

I see the appeal as he is the cheapest option into a Spurs defence with appealing fixtures ,so it just depends how short/long term you look at these things.

This is why I hate to own 2 premium players from one club.
If I have Kane plus Alli/Eriksen, and there's a good spurs fixture, kane gets the armband every time.
To me, owning kane means owning alli or eriksen is sort of funds wasted on a premium option I can't captain. Might as well get mane at that point and widen captain options.
This then means i inadvertently still do "coverage" but for a different reason

There are always going to be some premium options in your team that are not going to be captained in a week.

I suppose all of us have at least 4 premium attackers in our teams. So in that case, every week, 3 of them aren't being captained. That's okay.

Even if you bring in Mane instead of Alli, you're only going to captain him if he has the standout form and fixture that week. Otherwise he's not being captained either. So it depends on form and fixtures at the time, not coverage.

For example, if Spurs have better form and fixtures for a bunch of weeks than Liverpool, it's better to go with a non-captained Alli and Kane(c) rather than a non-captained Mane and Kane(c). Instead of spreading the 'coverage'.

On a wildcard, what's the better trio for 4th/5th midfielder and a striker slot

    1) Richarlison, Carroll and Morata
    2) Eriksen (Already have Alli), Richarlison and Ayew
    3) Any other 3 totalling 20.8 or less

Should I downgrade Willian to Brady and upgrade Stephens to Alonso, or downgrade Stephens to a 4.5 and upgrade Willian to Mkhi?

Likely wc'ing in GW7 so can always get Alonso in when fixtures turn...
