Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 5

The preparations for Gameweek 5 get underway with the launch of our Captain Poll to gauge your views on the optimum armband options.

With a brace and maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus returns against Everton at the weekend, Harry Kane (12.4) signalled the beginning of September’s fixtures in style.

A fine display in Spurs’ convincing 3-0 win, coupled with an enticing home tie against Swansea City, makes him a strong favourite for the summit. The Welsh side have conceded an effort every 4.8 minutes – the worst record in the top-flight – and have also allowed opponents 40 close range efforts on goal, the second worst tally, behind Bournemouth.

Furthermore, Spurs put five past Swansea without reply in the corresponding fixture last season, with Kane scoring twice.

This also brings Christian Eriksen (9.7) and Dele Alli (9.5) into contention.

The Dane’s successful strike at Goodison, and six shots on target this term, could earn him votes. Since Saturday, he has attracted 100,000+ new managers, with returns in three of the first four Gameweeks placing him one point off the FPL midfielders’ summit. Like Kane, Eriksen scored twice in the same fixture in 2016/17.

Alli – who managed just a single assist at home to the Swans last season – has bettered Eriksen by two goals to one and found the net in Spurs’ previous home fixture.

We have also added a fourth Spurs asset to the poll. Ben Davies (5.7) is the top scoring player in FPL on 32 points and, with more than 114,000 new managers, is currently the most popular transfer target. The Welsh international has created 13 chances this season, more than any other defender, while the chance of clean sheet points is also strong given that the Swans have the worst goal attempt record so far.

A red card for a high challenge on Manchester City goalkeeper Emerson on Saturday has deprived us of Sadio Mane’s inclusion for this weekend’s encounter with Burnley at Anfield.

However, in Roberto Firmino (8.6) and Mo Salah (9.1), the Reds have two strong options for consideration.

The Brazilian has two goals and as many assists and should relish the opportunity to take on a Clarets side without their number one stopper Tom Heaton, who suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during yesterday’s Turf Moor clash with Crystal Palace.

Sacrificed at half time at the Etihad following Mane’s red card, Salah still boasts an impressive record for the Merseysiders. He has produced double-digits in both appearances that have lasted beyond 45 minutes since arriving at Anfield.

Given Mane’s absence, we have tentatively included Philippe Coutinho (8.8) among our captaincy candidates. Although he has yet to play this season in the league, an appearance and a strong showing in the Champions League midweek might see the Brazilian garner interest. With a mere 2.2% FPL ownership, Coutinho could prove an intriguing differential captaincy option.

Man City’s sensational 5-0 win against Liverpool is set to renew interest in their attacking options and could see strikers Gabriel Jesus (10.4) and Sergio Aguero (11.4) challenge for a high placing for their trip to Watford.

Of the pair, the 8.7% owned Brazilian may have the edge – a brace at home to Liverpool took his tally to three goals and 21 points in the last two Gameweeks.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Jesus bagged a goal and assist while Aguero served up two strikes and an assist in a 5-0 win.

But with three clean sheets out of four, the Hornets look far more resilient under new manager Marco Silva.

Everton’s bruising loss to Spurs could give voters extra confidence in the captaincy merits of Manchester United’s attackers for the Toffees trip to Old Trafford.

Romelu Lukaku’s (11.7) delivery of attacking returns in three of four fixtures, including a goal against Stoke City on Saturday, puts him firmly in contention for a top placing at home to his former side. A 57.6% ownership, the highest in FPL, further strengthens the likelihood of votes.

Red Devils’ midfielders Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.3) and the 38.3%-owned Paul Pogba (8.3) could also attract attention. They have racked up eight assists between them, with the latter also scoring twice.

History suggests that Chelsea players could be strong candidates for the armband for Arsenal’s visit – over the pair’s last four league matches at Stamford Bridge the Blues have scored an impressive 13 goals, while the Gunners have found the net just once.

Alvaro Morata (10.1) leads their cast of captaincy candidates after racking up three goals and two assists this campaign.

Eden Hazard (10.5) could also earn his first league start after a 12-minute run out against Leicester at the weekend; we’re currently presuming that he will be assuming spot-kick duties again this season.

The Belgian has scored in three of his last four home league appearances against the Gunners and notched more goals (12) in front of his own supporters than any midfielder last season.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 5

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 9am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 9am by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

I'm pretty sure - post WC in GW4 - I was still struggling around 1.3 million. I'll be more worried after GW5 if Mky, Alli, Firmino and Salah all blank again.

Well it's not great for GW4 but I hadn't planned the WC for a single GW. I'm happy with the squad now, it's just Mky, Alli, Liverpool and the Saints/United defences didn't turn up. They'll be okay and I've got a full XI at home in GW5.

My big regret is Davies - toyed with him but turned it down. Oh, and of course the gamble on Kane vs Laca. But then, I'm not beating myself up on that. Wanted to take the risk on Laca outscoring him and it didn't happen. I wasn't really expecting Everton to roll over so easily.

Laca to Kane for GW5 and then I'm looking good for a bit. Barring injury, I can't see me changing the front six so it will be tinkering at the back from then on.

There was plenty of logic in your decisions. I was in exact same boat as with regards to Lacazette and Davies.

Pulled trigger early last night to get Davies in for Cedric before I was priced out. Took -8 hit but would have been only -4 if I had stuck with Kane.

Oh well you win some and you lose some.

Sure. I think Burnley at home is the type of game he plays. I reckon he'll be favoured vs the Bus Parkers. I've mitigated against him not playing - I'll have Cedric or Dawson to come in depending on who I select.

The only issue is if he doesn't start and then comes on but I think I'll run that risk. Let's see if Gomez starts in Europe.

I'm in a similar boat to you. Happy with my team now although it didn't do great this week (bit better than you but still).

Already taken a hit this week to correct an obvious omission and remove a dud. (Atsu / Cedric > Carroll / Davies)

I'm wondering if we got Alli vs Eriksen wrong but a switch would seem sideways.

If I hadn't have taken the Laca gamble, I'd have had Kane's points and captained Lukaku so my bad GW hinged on that decision not the WC in general. I'll forgive myself that, just wanted to take a risk on the captain.

Yeah, Alli vs Eriksen is as tricky as always. I've gone with head not heart but - low and behold - Eriksen went off on 70 minutes and Alli was there for the 90. Let's see how they fare in GW5 after Eriksen has played in Europe and Alli hasn't.

It will only take an Alli goal and Eriksen blank and it swings back again. It will likely be tit for tat all season. I've no worries about Alli's position, he's playing up with Kane when Spurs have possession so goals and points will come.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Is Kane essential?

Kane is already the runaway leader in our captaincy poll, on the back of a brace last weekend and a great fixture against Swansea.

But is he really essential. Some are set to stick with Lukaku with the armband and hope he will do better?

Some believe Eriksen or Alli or both give ample Spurs 'coverage' and in the Dane especially a good captaincy alternative.

Are you Kaneless and staying without? Or are you getting him in ahead of the weekend at all costs?

And if Kane is the default captain for the forseeable future, is Lukaku's 11.7 price tag really necessary?

    1. Francescoli

Another important factor is that I don't think they'll steamroll teams like they were doing last season. Kane/Eriksen will be subbed around 75-80 mark if they have a comfortable lead because there are more important games to come. People saying Kane will score 10 in the next 4 are just being unrealistic. This isn't April/May where the only thing Spurs have to play for is the golden boot.

That's a different debate. I'm saying I won't get rid of Lukaku or Morata to get Kane. The only way I'll consider Kane is if I downgrade Salah and that would require -12.

How many goals in the last 30 minutes? Spurs in April/May would have gone for 5-6 goals if they lead 0-3 at the start of second half. That won't happen during the autumn when you have your mind on the CL.

Wait why is 5-6 goals your minimum expectation? Lol. Isn't 3 with a Kane brace enough?

I'm not one of the people who thinks he'll score 10 in the next 4 but he's still a standout captaincy option if you expect him to score a brace.

Why are you putting words in my mouth? Where have I said that 5-6 goals is my minimum expectation?

I'm saying that opinions on Kane are a bit flawed because of his crazy end to the previous season. So is his price. If he didn't finish off with two hat-tricks I think his price would have been 12m.

Now that he has a brace people are saying he's a season keeper and locked captain, totally ignoring his first three blanks and Spurs' struggles at Wembley. All I'm doing is giving reasons to why I don't think he will be as explosive as people are expecting him to be. Those factors are CL games, Wembley, plus not the same determination to destroy teams like at the end of last season where the only thing Spurs had to play for was the golden boot. At this stage of the season winning games is more important than winning big.

Before you put more words in my mouth let me just clarify that I don't disagree at all that Kane is an excellent captain but at the end of the day cheaper big hitting strikers are outscoring him. There isn't much to suggest that they can't keep up with Kane for the next 5-6 GWs. If guys like Morata and Lukaku weren't scoring then Kane would have been locked in my team with the armband.

Agree with all of it, except the last part. Spurs were explosive even before those last two games last season.

I think expecting anything more than a brace from your captain is greedy. A 10 pointer would do just fine. Even if Spurs win 2-0, Kane could score them both. And 2-0 is not winning big. So these are my expectations.

I would be careful with Morata though. His xG and xA compared with his goals and assists look fishy.

But Spurs weren't winning big last autumn. I know Kane was injured for a while but even with him in the team they were more dependant on late winners from Eriksen in low scoring matches. The CL is a massive factor, especially this year with the group they are in. If Spurs win 2-0 regularly my guess is a goal each from Kane + Alli/Eriksen. At 12.4 with cheaper strikers scoring consistently I need Kane to comfortably outscore those options.

Yup Morata has probably more points than he should have but I'm not sure if that's down to luck or him just being clinical. He won't score every header but I think with Hazard back he will be fed a lot more chances than what he has been so far. Hazard not only creates a lot of chances but he also drags opponents towards him freeing up the wing backs. I'll happily take a consistent run from Morata like Costa last season (apart from the YCs).

I might still end up with Kane this GW but that would have to be for a -12 with Salah downgraded. Not willing to sell Lukaku or Morata as of yet.

I have to get Kane in for the next 4. Even if he it means getting rid of Jesus (who has very nice fixtures) or Lukaku ( equally explosive player).

Kane could score 10 goals in his next 4.

I want to see a big win at wembley before saying essential, but he's been in my team all season and is my captain this week.

Lukaku is too rubbish at penalties to match him. I'd argue Pogba is more effective Lukaku coverage than Eriksen or Alli are for Kane.

I think the question could also be who is more essential Kane or Lukaku? Or which of them would you choose over the next 6-8 gameweeks.

I took him out in the wildcard so will wait another week if I want him back that desperately. I don't think he will be as lethal as last season and there are plenty of good options up front.

I was deliberating and the main question was - Am I better off with Kane and Sigurdsson or Lukaku and Alli? I've gone for the latter for the time being and don't regret it (yet).

im not so sure. there is still the Wembley factor and last season he had a couple of great fixtures just before Christmas and was an awful let down. enough to give me doubt enough not to rip up my team to get him in straight away. probably save FT and possibly do so next week if he keeps scoring.

I've actually not got Kane or Lukaku.
I've got Jesus and Morata, and the 3.5 mil this saves me gives me strength everywhere in the pitch.
The only risk is captaincy, but my two matched the two favourites this week, and hopefully they'll continue to do so.
My key decision this week is swap mane for Salah, Pogba or Alli? I already have eriksen and mkitarian and also Firmino.
I'll see how the mid week Euro games go first.,

Whether essential or not, you only need a look into his ownership and the captaincy polls.

I'm holding Laca & Kaku rather than getting him in. Laca has three great fixtures after the CHE game so I think he might score very well over that run. I will have Eriksen & Bavies for Spurs decent run of games. Happy to leave the armband on Kaku for the next three, plenty of goals to come I reckon!

Not gona captain Lukaku over Kane anytime soon, hoping Morata n firmino match Lukaku n loser striker over the next while. Seems more balanced, 11.5m huge for player I won't captain, albeit massive ownership, cud be hit hard if explodes

Of course he isn't essential; he has blanked before against easy opponents and will doubtless blank again. However, now that he has broken his duck for the season and August is out of the way, I don't think there is a better forward option over the next 7 or so games. Get on him whilst he's hot.

Kane seems like a good option for managers who have premium forwards/mids failing.
Personally I've got jesus and lukaku who have outscored Kane uptill now. Have got eriksen who's covered some of my spurs points.
Plus would like to see if kane and spurs can score consistently on Wembley.
      Risky right now imo.

I made the move from Lukaku to Kane this week, as I'd always planned to. I can see Lukaku averaging about 6/7 points per game, a tally that I think will be matched by Morata for 1.6 mil cheaper. I think Kane is too explosive a captaincy option to ignore for these next 5 fixtures, and I'm really glad that Morata has started so well which makes me confident I can keep pace with any Lukaku points (front 3 is now Kane, Morata and Firmino).

I did the same - went through with my 'plan' to transfer Lukaku to Kane for gameweek 5, leaving me with Kane-Jesus-Firmino, with Pogba and Mkhitaryan as Man Utd attacking players. I'm playing a bit of a wait and see game, saving my wildcard etc and only using free transfers (so far....)

In a word, yes. First name on my draft after last season's heroics in the run-in. I even forsake Lukaku in the name of team balance to ensure I built a decent squad around Kane.

I really think injury permitting he can average a goal a game for the season.

Can't see me captaining anyone else now.

      I think I'm in love 🙂 🙂

No one is essential, if you can cover their form and price elsewhere. However, since you got to have a strong captain every week, there has to be someone you deem essential in your team. And easily, it would be either Kane or Lukaku, not both.

In my view, Kane is so explosive that he, not Lukaku, is essential.

Lukaku is the new Costa and Kane is the old Kane.
Well that's the way I expect it to turn out long term. Utd to sit on small leads & Spurs to win by bigger margins, which means I'll prob get double or triple Spurs on my WC.

He could easily score 3 or 4 goals at any goven time. He has assists in his locker, allbeit less than his goal threat but he really is the all round, fixture proof, captain everyone craves. The only thing that pits people off is his price tag. If he was 10 mil he would most likely have 80-90% ownership by the end of the season.

I would say Kane, Erikson and Bavies all essential at the minute.

I actually think aurier is going to be a beast. If I didn't have Bavies right now I'd potentially hold off. He's a better version of the spurs walker

He's very attacking and suits spurs

For me him and Mendy are going to be the 2 defenders people will be going mad by the end of gw 6

      Kola - Alonso - Aurier - Mendy back 4.

Would be interesting to see what the rest of the team would be like with that back 4

You could have something like this:

          Foster - Elliot
          Kola - Alonso - Mendy - Aurier - 4.0
          Mkhi - Salah - Ritchie - 5.5 - Carroll
          Kane - Jesus - Mounie

I'm very tempted to WC for this...

            Elliot Krul
            Kola Mendy Davies Jones 4.0
            Mkhi Eriksen Choupa 4.5 4.5
            Kaku Kane Firmino

like the idea of going with the wing back thing this year

Could miss the odd game I would say but he is so much better than Danilo or Sane at LB/LWB that you would imagine Pep wants him there as much as possible.

This is what I'm trying to find. Not many standout bargains atm. I think the best formation to play in CL fantasy is 5-2-3. Defenders tend to do well in CL and there aren't many budget midfield options.

Agreed. Midfielders are so overpriced and not nailed.
Any 4.5m gems in mid & defence?

Joe Gomez for Liverpool at 4.5 could be a good shout. I expect him to start with TAA playing in the premier league. I'm still researching other targets though.

4.5m mids there is Almeida who plays reverse oop (RB) for Benfica, probably the best you'll find, unfortunately. Defenders: Klostermann Leipzig 4.5m, Milic Olympiakos 4m. Maybe Trent from LFC at 4m and then Toljan (4.5m) or Zagadou (4m) will start for Dortmund at left back.

Seferovic 5.5m starting striker for Benfica. Jorge 4m starting left back for Monaco. A few 5.5m mids with some potential like Salvio, Bruno Fernandes, Acuna, Golovin, Ganso.

Yeah I have Salvio. Thought he was very underpriced when I saw him at 5.5. Good fixtures too

As a Davies, Eriksen and Kane owner, it felt like my FPL season finally got underway on Saturday in GW4.

Now brimming with excitement for GW5. But still not convinced about Kane (c). Tempted by Eriksen. Seems to have a very good record against the Swans... five goals and two assists in the last four meetings.

Shame. I always thought Palace had some decent players, even when Pardew left. Personally, I'd have shifted Benteke out for a sprightlier forward. Zaha's injury came at the worst time - I suspect a transfer request come January.

I like how Steve Parrish said “we have to stick together” only last night. Makes you think whatever comes out of his mouth is a lie. Don’t know how any future signings would listen to what he has to say with any credibility.

Yes they have looked poor, but should have won yesterday. Next game is Saints at home so they have a chance there, but after that the next three games are brutal. Will they sack the next manager (reportedly Hodgson) if they lose the next four games as well? Bet they don’t - But by their logic they should do.

I have decided to WC and play 4 every week at the back (sometimes even 5).

Too much value in OOP defenders to ignore imo VS too much spread points in expensive Midfielders (City and Pool is an headache)

So, what do you think? Stupid ou might be worth considering?

    4.5 - Elliot
    Alonso - Bavies - Mendy - Kolasinac - Naughton
    Alli - Gross - Brady - Gundogan - Caroll
    Lukaku - Kane - Chicharito

I'm into as well. Just posted this variation as poss WC...

      Elliot Krul
      Kola Mendy Davies Jones 4.0
      Mkhi Eriksen Choupa 4.5 4.5
      Kaku Kane Firmino

Alonso seems a stretch too far, but agree with you on the other defenders
