Dugout Discussion – Newcastle vs Liverpool

Next up, Newcastle United and Liverpool bring the curtain down on Gameweek 7 in the 4.30pm kick-off at St James’ Park.

The big news is that Roberto Firmino drops to the visitors’ bench for the first time this season.

With just one goal in his last five league outings, the Brazilian was second only to Sergio Aguero for transfers out last week, with over 266,000 parting company.

Today’s news looks likely to signal further sales, barring a virtuoso outing off the bench.

Firmino was the sixth top captain option for the Gameweek and the most popular from today’s late match. Over 128,000 backed him with the armband, with Mo Salah (115,000) next in line.

Interest in Philippe Coutinho is on the rise, though – he was subject to more than 186,000 transfers in after following up a 13-point haul at Leicester with a midweek Champions League strike at Spartak Moscow.

And lest we forget Sadio Mane – the only player to score in each of the first three matches prior to his early dismissal at Man City in Gameweek 4.

For Newcastle, Matt Ritchie’s creativity could profit against a defence that’s shipped 10 goals in their three away matches.

The Magpies’ midfielder has assisted three of Newcastle’s last four home goals, earning 17 points in the last two in front of his own supporters.

Up against the Reds’ prolific attack, there’s no surprise to see than Rob Elliot is the most benched player for the Gameweek, named as a sub by more than 1.1m owners.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Think I'll use this international break to work on my winter WC.

    Must haves for each position?

Plan for next 4-6 GWs, no need to plan further than that. Many players will be injured, form will change, transfer window open, etc etc I guarantee whatever team you plan towards having now you wont be able to have in Jan

    Is Brady&Firmino > Cout/Salah& Joselu a bit points chasing?

It's either that or lose Alli for a City mid and upgrade Bob to Morata..?

Team presently set as below for week 8. Really not sure whether to WC or not?

    Would you
A WC and get amongst others Jesus (Morata if fit) DSilva Alonso Maguire Ritchie Choupo-Moting (trade off is Firmino to Tammy Abraham)
B Free transfer Mkhitaryian to DSilva
C -4 Mkhitaryian to Sterling and Hegazi to Maguire
D -8 As C with Firmino to Vardy

    Elliot
    Kolasinac Davies Bertrand
    Eriksen Mkhitaryian Brady Atsu
    Lukaku Kane Firmino

    Foster Hegazi Carroll Long

Picked him up this week as a one game punt before wildcarding, which I'm currently not doing. Wouldn't get him now as defence looks shaky and attacking returns won't be that often.

People should treat defenders the opposite of strikers in most cases, ie if they score much higher points than normal leave them alone, they have had their big haul for the season.

Tough choice on who to drop. Probably Luiz but if you swapped around Fabianski and stuck another defender into goal eg Otamendi to Ederson or Davies to Lloris etc (not specifically them) you could possibly be able to find .7m.

Are we going to see premium defender prices significantly bumped next season, and mid range mids drop next season... something has to shift surely there's so little value in the 5.5-7.5 mid bracket

FPL will balls up the prices as per.

To be fair, players FPL didn't project as starters (Davies and Jones) are mucking things up. It's not like defenders need to be 7-8 million. 6-6.5 is usually fair.

Hello guys. Really in two minds whether I should wildcard this team now. Team looks ok, but lacking City attack/ Chelsea defence I'd like to have. Also triple Spurs/United at the moment. Little reluctant to take a hit as I have done so two weeks in a row. Marked with * the players I'd probably ditch on wildcard So, what would be your preferred move with this team?

    Davies, Kolasinac*, Jones
    Ritchie*, Mkhitaryan*, Eriksen, Choupo-Moting
    Lukaku, Kane, Firmino*

    subs: Elliott --- T.Carroll, Suttner*, Long* --- 1 FT, 0.2 ITB

    A) Firmino -> Vardy
    B) Firmino & Mkhitaryan -> Vardy & Silva (-4)
    C) Wildcard
    D) Something else, what?

Firmino > Jesus if you want City attack. Don't wc, you have a great defense, ok midfield, and great forwards once you get rid of Firmino.

Here we come again to the cost of transfers. I'd have to downgrade Kolasinac to Martina to afford Firmino -> Jesus. There's no way I'd do that tbh.

Already have Kane, but no Kane 🙁

    1) Lukaku and Alli -> Kane and Silva
    2) Jesus and Alli -> Kane and 7.5 mid
    3) Firmino and Alli -> Kane and 5.7 mid (means playing Eriksen, Ritchie and 5.7 mid)

After much talk about using the free hit chip, I have some results, not a fan of using it to fill gaps with possible mediocre fixtures/form from lesser teams, wanted to use it in a week where the was good form and fixtures for top players and possibilities of points at both ends of the pitch.

With that being said, here are my results.

    Foster 1
    Cedric 1
    Naughton 2
    Jones 6
    Alonso 2
    Davies 16
    Mkhitaryan 3
    Eriksen 3
    Salah 2
    Kane 13
Lukaku (c) 12 (would have been the transfer in)

    Old team = 61 points

    De Gea 6
    Trippier 14
    Davies 16
    Bellerin 11
    Kolasinac 6
    Choupo-Moting 5
Surman 3 (subbed in for Bailly)
    Coutinho
    Kane 13
    Lukaku (c) 12
    Lacazette 2

Free hit team = 98 points

    Profit of 37 points.

Glad I didn't follow the crowd now and decided when I felt it was suitable to use.

Rank has been smashed as a result, not sure anyone will be smashing any ranks in a blank week but we'll see.

It's not just about that one decimated gw though, even though t
37 points very well could be mademup in such a week.

It's also about the weeks before and after a decimated gw. Where ppl slaughter their team to field as many as possible.

      1. Freddo

Do people slaughter their teams or just prepare their benches to be able to come into play?

The BB and TC will be used in those and if they are anything like last year, it'll probably be underwhelming, I'm happy to cut through the rank now and build from there.

What to do with Mkhi ... my other relevant players are Silva, Kane, Laca and Morata, Otamendi

Initially I was going to do Mkhi > Sane but if Morata is going to miss a couple of matches I would be looking at Morata > Jesus ... which means I am stuck on who to replace Mkhi with

I have just enough to do Mkhi + Kiko > Coutinho + 3.9 Def and still have 0.2 ITB to update Morata > Jesus if needed
I don't like having a non playing 5th defender and would be forced to do the transfers early, plus Liverpool's next two fixtures aren't
    attractive

An alternative punt could be Mkhi+Morata > Hazard+Rashford
Mkhi can drop 100K without affecting my SV, so I could hold fire and only do Morata > Jesus if needed

Similar situation to you, he was my planned move out this week but now have to fix Aguero, I'll keep him myself for Liverpool and then after that he has Huddersfield, suppose I'll have to give him those games.

Don't think he's worth hitting to lose, United are still scoring goals as did he in Europe.

      1. HashAttack
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

thanks - Mkhi seems to get bad press on here

Coutinho is tempting but it looks like the wrong time and wrong fixures - but not sure I would be able to afford him any time in the future

Think I'll just have to wait and see - if Morata is okay to play that I'll probably end up Mkhi > Sane and risk that City double up in midfield .... if not It'll be Jesus up front and hold Mkhi for another 2 weeks

Its awkward because if you hold him for Liverpool, there's no point selling before Huddersfield.

United could smash them like Spurs did, honeymoon is over for them now.

    DDG | Elliot
    Bavies | Monreal | Cedric | Cresswell | Ward
    Salah | Mkhi | Ritchie | TC | RLC
    Kane | Lukaku | Firmino

    A) Firmino -> Vardy
