Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Saturday

An injury to Marouane Fellaini mars Belgium’s 4-3 classic in Bosnia, while Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante also limps off as France win 1-0 in Bulgaria.

Key goals are scored by Premier League assets in both Europe and Africa, with Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi’s winner propelling Nigeria to the World Cup finals in Russia.

Here are the notes from a night of mixed emotions in the race for World Cup qualification.

Injuries to the fore

If you were a more mean-spirited Chelsea fan watching the 3-4 thriller between Bosnia Herzegovina and Belgium, life was pretty good.

The two players in line to offset the absence of Alvaro Morata in attack – Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi – both impressed, with the midfielder setting up a goal and the striker scoring one.

And a key member of title rivals Man United’s midfield, Marouane Fellaini, limped off with a knee injury.

The irony of that particular situation will not have been lost on Jose Mourinho, who was no doubt delighted when his star striker Romelu Lukaku was ruled out of the Bosnia match with an ankle problem, only to potentially lose his in-form replacement for Paul Pogba instead.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was less than optimistic about Fellaini’s plight post-match.

“We are all worried about Fellaini. We fear that there’s ligament damage.”

That could well rule the midfielder out of United’s Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool and beyond, with Mourinho’s men also facing Spurs and Chelsea before November’s final international break of the year.

It also arrives as a bitter lesson learned for the 104,000+ Fantasy Premier League managers who have already acquired Fellaini ahead of the Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool following his brace in the win over Crystal Palace. Only David Silva enjoyed more transfers in over the break among midfielders.

But it wasn’t all wine and roses for Chelsea fans as one of their key midfield men, N’Golo Kante, was also injured, succumbing to a hamstring issue in France’s 1-0 win in Bulgaria.

France manager Didier Deschamps has already confirmed that Kante is ruled out of Tuesday’s qualifier with Belarus.

“He [Kante] came out with a muscle problem, behind a thigh, he will not be there Tuesday”

Kante (5.1) has been an ever-present for the Blues this season, his consistency of starts and budget price tag attracting 20.9% FPL ownership.

Chelsea’s forthcoming schedule is attractive, but with Champions League fixtures to factor in as well, the strain on their squad will be increased. Losing Kante for any length of time will compromise their solidity and cause concern over Chelsea’s clean sheet potential.

Kante has made more recoveries (69) than any other midfielder this season and ranks second behind Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi for tackles won (28 vs 27).

The Gameweek 8 trip to Crystal Palace is perhaps not an immediate worry. Recent investors in Cesar Azpilicueta – some 43,000+ – will remain confident given that the Eagles are yet to score a single goal this season. However, Kante’s potential absence could dent his prospects ahead of a home clash with a Watford side who have scored in each of their away trips this season.

Belgium’s clash with Bosnia match was a bona fide classic of seven goals, stirring comebacks and a late winner.

They fielded a standard Premier League all-star line-up including Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, who scored on the night, Toby Alderweireld, Fellaini, Kevin De Bruyne, Hazard and Batshuayi.

All bar Fellaini played the full 90 minutes, while Nacer Chadli came on for the last four minutes and Simon Mignolet, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Defour and Divock Origi were unused subs.

Asmir Begovic and Sead Kolasinac started and finished for the hosts, with the Bournemouth keeper credited with an assist for Bosnia’s second goal. Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic played 62 minutes.

Hugo Lloris and Alexandre Lacazette also started for the French, with the latter playing 76 minutes and his Arsenal team-mate Olivier Giroud coming on for a late cameo. Spurs’ Moussa Sissoko watched from the bench.

Goalscorers on two continents

West Ham striker Diafra Sakho followed up his winner for the Hammers against Swansea City with a goal for Senegal in a 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands.

His club team-mate Cheikhou Kouyaté also featured, as did Everton’s Idrissa Gueye and Liverpool star Sadio Mané, with the latter subbed off after 89 minutes.

Nigeria secured their place in next year’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Zambia.

Leicester’s Ndidi and Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses played the full 90 minutes, but it was Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi who was the star turn, scoring the winner after coming on as a 66-minute substitute.

Iwobi now has two goal in as many matches for club and country and, at 5.1, is a cheap route into an Arsenal side that has a mix of the good (wat eve SWA bur) and the ugly (mci TOT) over the next six Gameweeks.

He has started two of the last three matches for the Gunners, but has featured in only three league fixtures all season, and competition for places in the Arsenal midfield remains intense.

Foxes duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa were unused subs for Nigeria.

Brighton midfielder Davy Propper (5.4) scored his first goal of the season as Holland kept their faint chances of a World Cup play-off place alive with a 3-1 win in Belarus.

Everton’s Davy Klaasen replaced him for the final seven minutes, while Virgil van Dijk, Daryl Janmaat, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum all started and finished the match for the Dutch.

Nathan Aké and Wesley Hoedt were unused substitutes.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka scored and Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri provided an assist as Switzerland edged ever closer to qualifying for Russia 2018 with a 5-2 win over Hungary.

Elsewhere…

Spurs midfielder Son Heung-min played 79 minutes, and Crystal Palace’s Chung-yong Lee the full match, as South Korea lost 4-2 in a friendly in Russia.

Lee provided assists for both of the Koreans’ late goals.

Popular Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba (13.1%) started and finished Congo DR’s 2-1 win in Libya, Man United centre-half Victor Lindelof played 90 minutes as Sweden thrashed Luxembourg 8-0 and his Liverpool counterpart Ragnar Klavan put in a full shift for Estonia in a 6-0 dismissal of Gibraltar.

Portugal laboured to a 2-0 win in Andorra, with Man City’s Bernardo Silva enjoying a rare start. Southampton full-back Cédric Soares and West Ham centre-back José Fonte stayed on the bench throughout.

Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey got the full 90 minutes for Ghana as they drew 0-0 in Uganda.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Rise like a salmon, sting like a bee

This fishy mixed metaphor is for a hot topic about those players who are looking the best prospects for headed goals.

It is particularly handy to have these players when playing teams that concede a lot of headed chances and are poor in the air….more about them later.

Here’s a selection of some of those who are using their head when it comes to scoring.

    Kane

Top for headed goal attempts, top two for headed goal attempts on target. He’s already scored once with his bonce and more are to come. But we know that anyway.

Next six - BOU LIV mun CPL ars WBA

    Joselu

Top for on target headed goal attempts, top ten for headed goal attempts overall. But he’s yet to score with his noggin.

Next six – sou CPL bur BOU mun WAT

    Richarlison

Top three for headed goal attempts, plus he’s scored one with his noddle already. He also wins a lot of aerial duals.

Next six - ARS che STK eve WHU new

    Ben Mee

Top defender for headed goal attempts but he’s yet to score with his pate. Interestingly he is far more attacking at set pieces away from home – when some may be tempted to bench him. Could one of his next road trips see his first headed goal of the campaign? Worth mentioning also that he scored away against Man City last season.

Next six – WHU mci NEW sou SWA ARS

    Jamie Vardy

Top five for on target headed goal attempts and he’s already scored twice via his skull. With a strong fixture schedule his owners can expect more goals and perhaps one via his noggin sooner rather than later.

Next six – WBA swa EVE stk MCI whu

Now he’s the cross reference part for you to do.

Below are the teams who are most vulnerable to these headed goal kings

West Brom – have conceded the most headed goal attempts and are among the worst five sides in terms of aerial dueling.

Southampton – among the worst three sides in terms of conceding headed goal attempts and no side has lost more aerial duels than this sorry bunch of Saints.

Watford – The Hornets are among the three worst sides in terms of aerial dueling, in the bottom ten in terms of conceding headed goal attempts and the fourth worst at conceding attempts from set plays. This is good news for headed goal attempt kings.

    Special mention - Burnley

“But hang on a minute,” I hear eagle eyed statisticians cry. What about Burnley – worst side for conceding set play attempts and headed goal attempts? They are indeed but they are also top for aerial duels won…actually by some distance, proving that so far they have been more than capable of stopping the Premier League’s headed goal specialists.

Which headed goal specialists are you targeting?

There are plenty more I haven’t mentioned.

I personally look forward to them every day. Often they are quite creative topics, which no one is taking about, which I like. To come up with a new hot topic 365 days of the year is a monumental effort and it should be applauded IMO.

Nah, that's just my honest opinion. Could you come up with a good hot topic idea every single day of the year? I know I couldn't. It deserves a bit of praise and not criticism in my opinion.

I try to be as honest as possible. I appreciate the efforts Jonty puts in everyday here. But I think it is necessary that when people are not happy with something, it's better to express it. So not criticising someone because you are not as good as them in something and constantly picking out someone because you don't agree with them is something I don't like. In this case, I agree with what other people are saying.

Fair enough. It's a good hot topic for me. If you want to take FPL to the next level and get an edge over the many talented FPL managers on here, you need to look at stuff like headed goal data and set piece stats.

I've done something similar in the members area. I created a few tables showing which teams are especially vulnerable down the left and down the right.

I wouldn't be too keen on targeting players on the expectation of them scoring headers. That stat surprises me - average height of the backline's got to be about 6'3

Do you going Mee over Ward on WC? I will probably, I just waiting his price to fall:)

Potential for headed goals from corners and freekicks is a major consideration for me, especially for defenders. But the eye test is very important too. Kolasinac looks ripe for one of his powered headers sooner or later.

Took a gander at the members' tables yesterday and already have the 4 mentioned in my WC draft. Got triple Burnley defence (Pope, Mee, Ward) but away games are a dilemma - gotta bench them really, but will miss outon those points.

I believe Chelsea surprisingly scored the most set piece goals last season. Cahill will score up to 5 goals sooner rather than later ... probably at some point during their upcoming great run of fixtures.

I think man united have scored the most set piece goals this season. I certainly be looking at them when they play those teams vulnerable to SPs mentioned above. Hopefully fellaini will be back by then.

Not sure that was a surprise as they have always threatened from corners going back to the Terry days.

What amazes me is that Cahill was the top scoring defender last season and not one person on here mentioned him in preseason. Almost everyone overlooked the set pieces stats from the 16/17 season.

      Great post

      TARGETS:

If Giroud was more involved he would be in my team as I quite like Xhaka's setpieces. I hope Kola can score a few like he did in the Charity Shield.

Same applies for Crouch but at his age he won't be starting games.

Carroll's injury record excludes him from contention but he is unstoppable aerially.

Fellaini would have been a great punt

      FLOPS:

Aldewereld's aerial ability fell off a cliff, Kos as well (might be his achilles issues)

Lukaku's ability to get headed goals is underwhelming for his size

Kompany could get 5-8 goals if he was healthy as Silva and De Bryne are great crossers from FKs and corners

Hegazi is Per mk-II, 6'4 but can't jump to save their lives

It'll make a difference for sure, how much we can't say. As mentioned below Conte cracks the whip and they have relatively easy fixtures so wouldn't be punished much I think but time will tell

There is certainly a case for building strong TV in the first half of the season. If you can WC in January with a budget of 103m that's a big advantage, potentially.

Yes but it would be a smaller factor amongst many e.g. fixture swing, team is a mess, injuries etc.

Agreed, I prefer to hold my WC until it's needed (Injuries etc) but I don't think you can question how serious someone is taking the game because they are planning to build value by using the WC over an international break, when traditional there are more price changes.

Fellaini injury has messed up my wc a bit as he was in my xi, so:
        a) 5.2m midfielder (not sure who?) + keep jones
        b) jones to 4.6m defender (already have ward) + choupo moting
        c) eriksen to silva, keep jones, and change fellaini to richarlison?

Definitely not C, Eriksen is a great option.
Not sure there is many available for 5.2m in midfield, so that probably leaves you with losing a Jones, Utd have some nasty games ahead, they could still keep CSs as Mourinho is a master at that, but from the options you have, B seems most sensible.

No worries mate, looking at 5.2 mids, perhaps Herrera now comes into the United team, although that's likely to be a defensive roles given the fixtures.
Ibe at Bournemouth could get some game time, Lemina at Southampton could be worth a punt given their fixtures.

I reckon Conte shoves David Luiz into the Kante role. I currently have no CHE and am tempted by Fabregas but still worry that he is a rotation risk.
Luiz could be a shrewder pick if he behaves himself!

Suely its time Charlie Austin got a start ..Long & Gabbiadini can’t buy a goal at the minute
At £6.2 could solve the 3rd stiker slot, pre injury last season he was on fire

Harry Kane has trademarked his name HK. Hope he has a big world cup next year, he's on the right road to becoming a legend, as long as his fitness keeps up!

Where do we see Kane in 3 years time? Will he still be at Spurs? Abroad? do we expect his price to rise in next seasons fantasy? 13.0 perhaps? I cant see him staying at Spurs his whole career, he wont win anything!
