Wisdom of the Crowd – Gameweek 11

Each week we are reviewing the aggregated predictions on Superbru’s Premier League Predictor game, using the collective Wisdom of the Crowd predictions to guide our fantasy football thinking.

Please join the FFS league here and add your own predictions to the data – the more there are, the more accurate the crowd should be (in theory).

Gameweek 10 Review

A defeat for Watford was the biggest upset of Gameweek 10, showing how far their stock has risen, and disappointing for those who put their faith in Richarlison at Vicarage Road.

Wins for Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal were widely expected, even if the manner of their victories was somewhat surprising, with the Sky Blues winning 3-2 and Liverpool prevailing in spite of a penalty miss from Reds winger Mohamed Salah.

Here are the Gameweek 10 results in descending order of predictability:

Well done to Adam Bonynge from Australia for winning the Yellow Cap in the FFS pool, correctly predicting every match except that Watford defeat.  Mr Crowd Wisdom – using the aggregated predictions of the crowd – had a reasonable week, dropping 5 places but remaining inside the top 50 out of over 400 players in the pool.

After nine rounds, the Crowd Wisdom user is in the top 8% of all players in the UK and the top 12% of over 63,000 players around the world

The aggregated predictions of the community are making better predictions than most individual players in the game, suggesting that there is credibility in the Wisdom of the Crowd concept.

Gameweek 11 Preview

Here is the Expected Goals chart for each fixture in GW11:

And here is the ranking of teams in order of Expected Goals Scored and Conceded:

For the first time in a while, Manchester City are not top of the Predicted Goals chart, by virtue of their tougher fixture against Arsenal.

Instead, Tottenham lead the way as they host Crystal Palace. If they can put three goals past Real Madrid, surely they can do the same against Palace?

Spurs talisman Harry Kane is fit again and looks a great captaincy option, while both Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen were on the scoresheet in midweek, and look set to profit this weekend.

Overall, it looks set to be a slightly lower-scoring weekend, with four of the top five teams playing each other. Perhaps defence is where we should concentrate.

In particular the crowd clearly feel that Jose Mourinho’s ‘bus parking’ tactics will be utilised for Manchester United’s visit to Chelsea. They predict a low scoring encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs look good for defensive returns, with a clean sheet predicted at Wembley, while Newcastle, Huddersfield, Southampton and Liverpool are also predicted to keep things pretty tight at the back.

Here are the aggregated predictions that we’ll enter into the game for Mr Crowd Wisdom in the FFS pool.

Is there anything else that catches your eye in these crowd predictions?

Don’t forget to join the FFS league on Superbru and make your predictions each week so that they are included in these data – the more knowledgeable people there are, the more accurate they should be in theory.

Good luck!

Looking good for Spurs attackers...and possibly for those with Jones.

Start Duffy or Ward? (Hoping the only clean sheet this gw won't be coming from Spurs!)

I'm playing ward - Sou attack still poor and Burnley really good on the road.

I can't predict Swa v BHA at all - could be 3-3 given form of their strikers or 0-0.

Cheers Jonty and Totti. Will go Ward then, I agree about that Brighton Swans fixture Jonty, Abraham & Gross/Murray are wildcards but both sides have shown some ability to be solid too

      I'd start both!

However if you have to pick, I'd go for Duffy. Brighton have only conceded 4 goals away from home all season, Swansea have only scored 4 at home.

Burnley have conceded 7 away, and southampton have scored 6 at home in 6 games. However, Burnley have faced tough sides away from home in their away fixtures, so emerging with only 7 goals conceded is quite a strong return, and I think they will have more than enough to hold off the pathetic Southampton attack too.

Tough choice, I'm struggling to drop one out of Stones, Azpi, Davies, Cedric & Ward. However as there's every chance that Poch will be making the decision for me and Ward will come off the bench anyway.

Getting rid of Kolasinac for the next 3 GW before bringing a CHE def in for their brilliant fixtures from GW14 on.

I need to free up 0.1 from Kolasinac sale to be able to do Vardy - Lukaku next week.

What's the best option in your opinion:

A- Kolasinac --> Bavies (CRY, ars, WBA) tasty but quite concerned about rotation here
B- Kolasinac --> Daniels (new, HUD, swa)
C- Kolasinac --> VVD (BUR, liv, EVE)
D Kolasinac --> Mawson (BRI, bur, BOU)

    other?!

For 3 games only, probably Daniels

Good article, disagree with the conclusion that we should focus on defence if you only predict one clean sheet ?

Agree completely, 1 clean sheet forecasted does seem low though.
Check out the Doosra stats Hot Topic for some clean sheet odds, that seems a more sensible predictor for clean sheets (although I might just be saying that because I have got a Saints, Spurs, Swansea and Newcastle defender!!).

A lot of people seem convinced that Man United will get a clean sheet this weekend but I'm not so sure, I think Conte will be fighting for his reputation and there is no love lost between him and Mourinho. I expect a Chelsea win and goals for both teams. Again, the clean sheets predictor on the Doosra Stats hot topic backs this up.

Lawro posts diagrams of what the Premier League table would look like if all his predictions this season had been correct.
Would it be possible to generate similar ones based on the predictions of Mr Crowd Wisdom?

    Fabianski - (Elliot)
    Otamendi - (Monreal) - Davies - (Mbemba) - Ward

What shall I do with my team - I know there's focus needed on the defence but not sure who.

    Elliot
    Jones Trippier Monreal
    Salah Eriksen Sterling Richarlison
Kane (about to come in) Aguero Abraham

Pope Maguire (about to go to afford kane) King Mbemba

No transfers and budget of 4.9 available when Maguire goes to afford Kane.

I apply this crowd wisdom concept on the talkSPORT predictor league. I look at the Ladbrokes result and correct score odds and predict the shortest odds. There is obviously a drop off in interest in terms of people playing each week, but last year I got in the top 1%. This year, gw6 was the most predictable and gw5 the least predicable according to my scores. In gw5, Liverpool and Spurs drew at home to lower opposition but I still had a reasonable fpl score and a green arrow. In gw6, I got the highest fpl points and gw rank that I've had this season.

With all the advantages we get by just using this site getting in the top 50k(top 1%) should be a prerequisite.

Best 4.5 defender? At the back currently have Dunk, Jones, Davies, Cedric & Mbemba with Eliot & Foster in goal.

Thinking Foster to Speroni & Mbemba to Mee. Any better options than Mee at 4.5?

Take your pick from Duffy, Mee, Femenia, Moreno. As you've got Dunk probably Mee.
