The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 11 – Sunday

The feast or famine continues for Harry Kane. Backed by 607,000 new owners and 1.4 million armbands for Gameweek 11, the Spurs striker once again frustrated at Wembley Stadium.

We have, of course, been here before.

Kane has been the top captain pick on just two occasions this season: today against Crystal Palace and back in Gameweek 8 for the home fixture with Bournemouth. He returned two points in both matches.

Indeed, Sunday’s blank was his fifth in six “home” fixtures this season, with a brace and 16 points against Liverpool in Gameweek 9 the only respite.

Ordinarily, we can point to Kane’s numbers as reassurance. However, just two shots, with one effort on target against the Eagles is a modest set of figures – his worst of the campaign so far.

The “unexpected” outcome delivered a most satisfying weekend for the 250,000 who opted for the 15-point Mohamed Salah as their captain, or indeed the 800,000 who trusted one of Alvaro Morata, Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus.

Spurs’ leggy display post Champions League, together with a much-changed teamsheet, clearly hindered Kane’s prospects. Perhaps we should have anticipated as much.

However, there’s no denying that the encounter with Palace ticked all the boxes as a favourable fixture. Roy Hodgson’s men were without a clean sheet, with 12 goals shipped in five away trips before today.

Plus, in Spurs’ last two matches that followed European ties – including an away trip to Madrid – Mauricio Pochettino’s attack had twice fired four goals, with Kane earning a brace in both. There was no talk of fatigue on those occasions.

We can clutch at straws and, yet again, try to decipher some data and theories to feed our future decisions on Kane, but the fact is, he almost defies all logic.

When he scores, he has not been restricted to a single goal in a match since the first of two fixtures in Gameweek 37 last season – a strike in a 2-1 win over Manchester United.

A total of 15 goals have come from eight matches. Over those fixtures, Kane has produced huge FPL scores via two hat-tricks and four braces, with maximum bonus points each and every time.

No other forward can match that level of explosive potential. That’s the reason behind his ownership, and why 1.4 million captained him for Sunday’s clash.

We clearly have a choice. We either show resolve and grit our teeth through the blanks, or risk turning our backs on Kane. The alternative is to allocate 12.8 of our budget on a player and not hand them the armband.

Are we really proposing we can consider that idea for home matches against bottom three sides? It’s an option, but it’s not easy to justify.

So perhaps we dare to go without Kane and back one of two Manchester City strikers seemingly locked in rotation. Or perhaps Morata, who suffered a six-match goal drought before today’s header. Or even Lukaku, who has no goals in his last seven outings.

Our confidence in Salah has grown, but is he really at the level where we can trust him with the armband week after week?

These alternatives are hardly convincing. At least, not yet.

That leaves us back at square one.

For all the frustration and rage that Kane creates, he remains a player that is intimidating to ignore and arguably too expensive not to trust with the captaincy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For the next few gameweeks, would you:

    A) Upgrade Forster to DDG and keep Choupo keeping more than 1.5 mil in the bank or
    B) Downgrade Forster to Pope, get Pogba in place of Choupo keeping no money in the bank

I have Jesus but I feel bad having a 10.5 million striker that starts on the bench. Yes, he scored yesterday but he's missing on a lot of points with limited game time.

I will either get Morata for no hit or Lukaku for -4?

Im keeping Davies for now, they have a good run of fixtures so surely he gets a few easier games and I have decent backups. One more 1pt cameo and he’s gone though.

I’m also probably holding Jesus too. At least for this week.

Morning guys. What would you do here? Looking to shift funds from defence/ Vardy into midfield in the coming weeks. Tempted to skip Lukaku and focus on getting Salah in for Choupo

    Pope
    Jones, Mee, Stones
    Alli, Silva, Choupo-Moting, Richarlison
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

subs: Elliott --- Dunk, Davies, Stephens --- 1.3 ITB, 1 FT

    A) Vardy & Choupo -> Abraham & Salah (-4)
    B) Jesus & B.Davies -> Aguero & Daniels (-4)
    C) Jesus -> Morata

3 premiums. There are a lot of options up top and not really much in the middle. Having 3 premiums allows you flexibility. Lukaku and 2 of Aguero/Kane/Morata

I think 2 premium and a rotation with a fifth mid is how I will be looking to go, playing 352/343. Kane and Lukaku are the two I want, due to no rotation risk, although I see the argument for Kun.

Can get away with a couple of decent defenders and three rotations along with a cheapish pair of keepers

Aguero being top of the forward options for points while playing significantyly less minutes is really tempting but on the other hand he's not likely to suddenly get loads more minutes to equal more points.

Will Lukaku's form improve with fixtures or does he really need Pogba?

Will Morata put away some non-headed chances?

Will Kane ever score at home against a weaker side?!

Kun Kane Tammy for me now. I’ll be doing Kun -> Morata gw 14 as it enables Dann - Azpi. Also allows for three big mids and a strong bench which will be important soon. Don’t like to be too heavily invested in any area and (right or wrong) it feels wasteful to have 3 heavy hitters up top as you can only captain one.

Morata and Kane with a bench fodder is the way I'll go now.

I've tried: Jesus, Firmino, Vardy and King and nobody has worked and my final option would be Lukaku and he just looks so poor.

I can improve my midfield and mainly my defence massively with that extra 5.0.

      Be flexible.

I think two premiums and the other slot flexible so can be upgraded to another premium within a hit easily...or still able to get an emerging cheap third striker.

GWK12 mine will be Kane, Lukaku and one other....but I will try and make sure I'm not tied to whover that is.

Rotating cheap attackers has rarely worked for me in the past so I tend to steer clear. These are exactly the kind of players that get surprise goals when you least expect and flop in easy games - which is why they are so cheap.

Any third striker I get I will play as I want as much money as possible on the pitch. When a starting 4.5 fwd arises then I'll be all for 3-5-2. Until then I want my third striker to play every week.

Think this is very valid for seasons gone by when there have been decent options in the mid to low priced forward bracket. Don't you feel that there is so much value in midfield this year tho (richarlison, ramsey, Zaha, city lads [if bought cheaply] ) which outweighs the additional £0.5m needed on your bench?

Not quite sure why no one is considering Rashford. Currently on him for my WC draft. The same great fixtures as Lukaku, eye for goal and reasonably good minutes. Seems to me that he's a solid option to take if you believe in the upturn of form United may show over the next 3, while still allowing yourself to strengthen other areas.

Wildcarding just now. Current status is: if I want a Man City mid (probably a safer bet and better value than a forward) and Salah, then the 3rd striker has to give.

Hence Kane, Lukaku and Abraham, with Sané/Sterling and Salah.

      Don't like 3 premiums.

      Kane, Morata and Lukaku.

I have Aguero but I'm moving him out for Lukaku.

Yes Aguero has more points in less minutes but I just can't captain him, 11.5+ is a lot of money for someone who I can never consider as a captain option. Even if he starts the game he'll be lucky to get passed 60 minutes. He is explosive but then so is that whole City team, points are often shared across not just the forward line but midfield.

Lukaku is nailed for 90 minutes and has some fixtures coming up against teams he normally steam rolls.

Don't waste time with cheap options, they're all pretty rubbish. So many options this season need to get as many premium attackers as possible.

Currently on Kane, Kun & Vardy.

It's almost 2m between Vardy and Morata and I would have to sacrifice a midfield option (Salah, Sane, Rich) or defense (Azpi, Otamendi) to upgrade...it's not worth it for me.

It's easy to exchange Vardy with Firmino and to downgrade to a cheap 3rd forward.

For me it has to be 3 premiums given the value in midfield and defence. At the moment Kane, Aguero and Morata are my picks, but I'd fancy Lukaku above Aguero over Christmas if his form picks up a bit due to the nailedness.

on wildcard and think i prefer city mids than kun, not a fan of lukaku at this point so im running a 4-4-2 like this:

      Elliott Speroni
      Azpi Walker Jones Mee Moreno
      Salah Sane Sterling Richarlison RLC
      Kane Morata DCL/Niasse

downgrading that 3rd striker gives such good value elsewhere

Have Kane Aguero Morata. However still pondering that the extra £1.3m in midfield for Jesus instead may well be key investment even with similar rotation and higher pay ceiling for Aguero.

Captain score as % of overall score 15.11%

We could do rate my wildcard team article during the international break as well. We are guided by you lot though - if lots want it we can easily do one. Lots called for one last time and as yet I've had no requests for one this time around.

Although I'm sure it wasn't your intention the line about me wildcarding therefore focusing on it in all hot topics was unfair.

Andy's just posted a hot topic on forward line ups - which will prove useful to wildcarders.

Do post your own discussion on it as well - perhaps focus on some of the key issues you think wildcarders are mulling over. Top five key issues or something like that. Which premium defs if any to have? Which Chelsea attacker? That sort of thing.

Do flag it for us as well so we know to hot topic it.

      I ditched for Salah.

Eriksen is playing way deeper now, similar to KDB except he's off a lot of set pieces that he relied on last season for assists.

There is so much value now with City/Pool mids that the spurs double up isn't necessary.

Vertonghen a top ten defender that's nailed and, after Arsenal, spurs have a very good run. I'm tending towards him.

I'm currently wildcarding Ive ditched Davies. Rotating full backs are a nightmare, have looked at Vertonghen his
6 million price tag puts me off. Eriksen has gone for Sane,
I think he's a better finisher than Sterling. Sane takes his fair share of corners, which is a bonus.

Title is paraphrased from Uncle Monty in Withnail and I by the way.

"It's the most devastating moment in a young mans life, when he quite reasonably says to himself, "I shall never play The Dane!" It is at that moment that all ambition ceases to exist."

I ditched Eriksen a couple of weeks ago for Salah - which obviously has gone well. And that is where Eriksen decisions lie - it is are there better for his price. Are Sane, Sterling, Silva, Salah, Mane better options? Can I downgrade to Richarlison/Choupo/Gross and use the spare cash wisely?

If the answer is yes then move him on.

depends on many factors, but he is a proven fpl points machine but as long as Wanyama and now also Winks is having injuries i think that if he plays deeper he won´t get as many points as he used to. Sharing set-pieces with fullbacks (and Kane) dents his appeal to me and if one have Kane i would prob look elsewhere, but it´s not an easy one this.
Initially i thought his price tag was accurate but as he has lost setpieces i think that influences his value a bit. sané for example has now emerged as a set piece taker too just to make a comparison.

I think we are all getting sucked in with memories of past points. Thew likes of Eriksen, Alonso, Sanchez all being held onto while not preforming. If they were "new" to the premier league and our teams they would have been axed long before now

I ditched last night for Sane. Don't believe his output is justifying his pricetag with the current value mids around. The Spurs attackers at home are one to monitor for me.

ditched for Sterling 2 GWs ago. don't regret it.
When time comes to back to Spurs mid I'll probably get Alli.
People say Son messes up Kane but i actually think he causes more problems for Eriksen. Takes his space and pushes him either wider or deeper.

I'm keeping for now as I have other fires to put out.

He was sensational and scored midweek vs Madrid. The difference is Heung-min Son.

He and Eriksen both want to operate in the same pockets of space, which results in Eriksen dropping deeper to spray balls around.

Once Son is out the team which will probably be as soon as Alli is back he will be a top option again.

Until then I can understand why people are switching to Sane or Mane.

He's still a decent option, but there's probably better value going Sterling/Sane (whoever you dont have already).

Also though to be sitting on Eriksen as well as Kane if/when Spurs have the occasional struggle at Wembley... Got 3 away fixtures in the next 4 though, but on the other hand it should be enough to just go with Kane from the Spurs attack going forward.

I've watched the last three Spurs games and he's a glorified KDB at the moment, playing extremely deep (almost in line with Harry Winks).

I'm on WC so was a no brainer to get rid, but even if I wasn't there's so many players better in midfield at the moment (Sane, Sterling, Salah, Richarlison, Gross, Zaha, Hazard, Salah etc.) that it would be worthy of a FT anyway

I think keeping players such as Eriksen, Kane, Kaku, Alli,, and trying to get players such as Hazard, Sanchez, in before the masses is the crux between us(those supposedly in the know), and them(deemed casuals).
We know this game, we know the history of these players, we know they will eventually score big pts.
They bring in the weeks high scorers, they don't think twice about dropping a Kane, or a Kaku, they are happily scoring more than us atm.
Can our long term knowledge outweigh their early lead.
      Hope so.

I think now that Sakho is there and the longer Hodgson works with Palace the more attractive they might become from a defensive point of view. Dann on my radar for sure.

Really can't decide on Bournemouth. Didn't consider them for a second pre-season because they give away chances for fun but that run of fixtures is tempting...

Sakho is a great point. Daniels stats not impressive, but at 4.8 I guess he could very well be worth a shot

Yeah, Bournemouth have had weird stats in previous seasons. I posted this before the season started about their defence: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16111533

Despite those figures they still do rack up clean sheets some of the time. Daniels at 4.8 with decent attacking potential or even Francis at 4.4 may be worth their price tag for this nice set of fixtures.

They do awfully in some games and very well in others. Hence looks like they're pretty poor overall, but they still manage to get 8-10 cleanies

Place looked ok against Spurs. Sakho makea a big difference.

Also check out Dann's threat...gone right back up.

Daniels fixtures + potential attacking returns. Anyone not gettting him in?

Not sure yet. Might get some cheaper options... Francis/Moreno/Dunk/Chilwell... quite many good 4.5 or less def's around. Lot's of funds goes in midfield and attackers... Bournemouth have 5 good fixtures but against HUD, swa, BUR, SOU, cpl. many of those teams will concentrate on defence so not sure if Daniels is able to get some attacking points

do people think kaku will spring into action again when the track gets flat enough for him to bully on or are their just not enough
chances being created for him with Mhiki having a mare and pogba out injured?

pogba could be back after IB. that makes a big difference to Utd.
Ibra close to a return will be a factor.
