The Digest – Gameweek 11

We look back at Gameweek 11 for the final time, picking out the key performer, an emerging source of Fantasy talent and chew over the major talking point to emerge from the ten matches.

Mohamed Salah rediscovers his form ahead of some outstanding fixtures for Liverpool. Brighton’s star continues to ascend under Chris Hughton, while Harry Kane’s struggles under the weight of the armband remains a real problem for Fantasy managers.

Here’s the Digest…

The Player

After a run of just one goal and an assist in the previous four league fixtures, Mohamed Salah’s Fantasy fortunes took a turn for the better thanks to Jurgen Klopp’s change of tactics away to West Ham.

Handed a central role alongside Roberto Firmino up front, the Egyptian profited from his link-up with the fit-again Sadio Mane as the pair combined for both Salah’s goals in the 4-1 triumph.

A season-high 15 points took the Reds’ summer signing to just one point off the top of the Fantasy Premier League summit and triggered major interest as the final international break of 2017 gets underway.

In spite of his recent mini-drought, Salah has remained one of the most consistent sources of FPL returns. He’s only gone more than a single Gameweek without scoring on one occasion – a two-match barren streak over Gameweek 6-7.

The underlying numbers show why.

Ranked fourth overall for total attempts (37), he climbs to second behind Harry Kane for shots in the box (32 to 39) and rises to first when it comes to efforts on target – a total of 24 leaves Kane (22) and Romelu Lukaku (18) trailing in the top three.

The forthcoming schedule merely strengthens his appeal.

Between now and Gameweek 21, only a visit from Chelsea and trip to Arsenal look problematic.

Aside from that, Salah offers five very favourable home matches (SOT EVE WBA SWA LEI) and three strong road trips (stk bha bou) in the next 10 rounds of fixtures.

After being rested from international duties over the next fortnight, the bandwagon is reaching full pace – he’s the top player for transfers in over the current break, with over 121,000 FPL managers turning to Salah to solve their midfield conundrum.

The Team

Both Burnley and Brighton more than merit a place in this section but, having covered the Clarets as recently as Gameweek 7, we turn to the Seagulls instead.

Chris Hughton’s side got off to a shaky start upon their return to the top-flight, with just four points accrued from their opening five league fixtures.

But Brighton have found their stride over the subsequent six, losing just once – a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal was the only time they’ve failed to score – in a run that has harvested three wins, two draws and a trio of clean sheets.

There’s no doubt that Pascal Gross has been their jewel in the crown so far.

The top-ranked player for key passes in each of the last two Bundesliga seasons, Gross has needed little time to make his impact felt in the Premier League – two goals and five assists earn him joint-seventh spot in the FPL midfield standings on 58 points. When on the pitch, he’s played a part in 64% of his side’s goals, more than any regular midfielder.

But it’s not all been about Gross in recent weeks, with Glenn Murray stepping up as a viable budget forward. With the German dictating play in a support role behind him, Murray has chipped in with four goals, six bonus and 27 FPL points in the last three Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, in midfield, last year’s Championship Player of the Year, Anthony Knockaert, has also become more influential – having blanked in the opening seven, a goal, assist and five bonus over Gameweek 8-11 coincides with Murray’s return to the teamsheet.

At the back, keeper Matt Ryan remains their top scoring player on 41 points – that’s level with Spurs’ Hugo Lloris, for example – though the underlying numbers point to centre-backs Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk as the most profitable options for those looking to invest.

Neither has produced attacking returns, yet they both rank inside the top eight defenders for attempts in the box. And in terms of Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), Duffy is the league’s number one player on 134, with Dunk sitting fifth on 107.

Up next, home encounters with Stoke, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Watford and a trip to Huddersfield in the next eight give Hughton’s side the chance to maintain momentum.

With trips to Man United and Spurs also over that run, though, looking for a rotation pairing for our Seagulls players could be the answer.

Conveniently, Burnley could be the answer. Between now and Gameweek 19, the two sides offer a straight run of eight home matches (SWA ARS CRY LIV WAT STK BUR WAT) that, aside from Liverpool’s visit to the Amex in Gameweek 15, looks conducive to Fantasy returns.

The Talking Point

Harry Kane’s struggles at Wembley continue to dominate discussion.

The runaway favourite for our Gameweek 11 armband, his blank at home to Crystal Palace was a fifth in six league starts at Spurs’ temporary home.

It was also the fifth time in six that Spurs have failed to score before half-time at Wembley in a run that has also included the likes of Burnley, Swansea and Bournemouth.

Stubborn opponents who are willing to sit deep and frustrate are having more success on the expansive Wembley pitch, with Spurs’ pressing game having less effect early on in matches.

By comparison, they have scored at least two goals before the break in three of the four away fixtures than Kane has started, with their hosts’ inclination to go on the attack allowing Mauricio Pochettino’s team space in the final third.

What’s all the more annoying is that, when it comes to underlying numbers, Kane’s statistics remain the best on show from any player at home.

Given that his overall numbers are so far ahead of any other forward, keeping faith with Kane right now is surely a wise decision. All the more so when you consider that three of his next four are on the road, where he has scored twice in each of his last three away outings.

But when it comes to Spurs’ home fixtures, we can either keep faith with Kane’s numbers and armband potential or look for alternatives when he entertains underdogs.

Over the next six Gameweeks, West Brom, Stoke and Brighton all roll up to Wembley – typically, those are matches you’d identify as home bankers for the captaincy.

If you’re willing to overlook Kane as a captain, there’s no shortage of alternatives.

Salah (CHE EVE WBA) and Lukaku (BHA MCI BOU) have two favourable home matches in the same three Gameweeks (13, 16 and 17) and both have delivered double-digits twice at home already.

Swansea’s Tammy Abraham (BOU WBA MCI), who has three strikes in his last four at the Liberty Stadium, is another option.

And Crystal Palace’s (STK BOU WAT) schedule over those Gameweeks could also promote Wilfried Zaha’s armband appeal – the Ivorian has scored in each of his last two at Selhurst Park and continues to be fielded up front, though Christian Benteke is nearing a return.

But can these options really threaten Kane as our preferred captain?

In truth perhaps only two players appear potentially explosive enough to rival him.

But Lukaku seems woefully short of confidence and certainly form. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero, perhaps the more natural alternative, remains uncertain of his starting role.

We would expect the Argentinian to start at the King Power Stadium in Gameweek 11, but having been recalled to international duty and with Gabriel Jesus an option for Pep Guardiola, we can’t be certain. For now, Aguero still comes packaged with the threat of being reduced to a 30-minute cameo from the bench, so we’d be risking a one-point return from our captain.

Is that a bigger gamble than backing Kane to deliver at Wembley? If feels like it.

Good question. Squad value is important in the early gameweeks in order to afford higher price players when they need to be brought in. However timing of transfers often overrides the value issue so don't get fixated on squad value

if you have the right players the team value follows... its just knowing when to change them, bank the profit and hop onto the next player.
If you play for points, generally the value comes.

Don't take hits for it. But it is a bit important I think. I think you'd have to watch a lot of football, 90mins to get a feel of who you think will do well. Squad value is for the gamblers and it can pay off v well if you do said above

    Guys a bit of confusion here, how to proceed;

1-D.Silva and Rosenior to Zaha and Daniels(leaves me 0,9 in the Bank) or
2-D,Silva and Rosenior to Pogba(will probably wait for injury update) and Francis(leaves me with 0,1 in the bank).

I have 2 FT this GW.

Silva to pogba seems risky till we see how he plays. Look at kane and morata etc straight back after injury and took a few games to come back to form.... i know silva out is popular, but the reality is he could eaily have scored last match and this might be a different conversation.
if its up grading non playing defenders is the immediate issue, i'd be tempted Doucoure to 4.5m like Loftus Cheek (great fixtures) and use the change to up grade 4m defender?

Thanks mate! Yes, it is to make good use of the 2 FT to upgrade the defense and reform the midfield. Looking for a long term solution at the back and a short term reform in the middle, not really keen to get rid of anyone at the front three...not for a few GWs at least.

your midfield are all solid players, don't panic, they'll come good. definitely not worth kneejerking any of them out.
Loftus cheek is a good shout, definitely frees up money without being a downgrade asuch on Doucoure, with the added benefit of better fixtures.
For the upgrade, looking at your existing defence, many here would say duffy or moreno, both have poor fixtures wk13, so limits their use in your case, especially incase Lascelles misses out any games through that injury. Bou worth considering... sea of green and good chance of a few cleans.. and francis is 4.4m
good luck with your decision.. try not to panic, you've a solid team

    Sane question....

What would you say to this wildcard team? Stupid going 2x4.5 mids?

    Elliott Speroni
    Azpi Jones Daniels Mee Dunk
    Salah Sterling Richarlison Carroll RLC
    Kane Lukaku Morata

Would probably sell Lukaku after three gameweeks to upgrade midfield.
Pros: Lukaku's next three, time to assess cheaper strikers like DCL, Niasse, King, Wilson
Cons: I don't like to plan transfers right after WC, weak midfield, is Lukaku really a must have for the next two with his poor form (even though Pogba will be back)?

You could do Richarlison > Gross which will save you another transfer in 2 GWs time unless you plan to keep him for the home matches against Spurs and Man U and visit to Burnley. I know i'll be getting rid for that ugly little patch.

if you had 0.2M more you wouldn't have a problem ... too many other comments elsewhere that SV (Sales Value) is not important

For comparison this is my team - 0ITB
              Elliot / Fabianski
              Azpi / Jones / Moreno / Ward / Chilwell
              Salah / Sane / Richarlison / Gross / Doucoure
              Kane / Kun / Morata

It's a problem for a lot of people. Not many bargains this season. The fact that it isn't as easy to increase your SV as last season is more of a reason to try to do so, not less. Each 0.1m gained or saved is worth more this year.

Definitely an option. Gives me almost a million more and Sané looks great. I just don't fancy Abraham. Not very promising fixtures and Swansea are pretty bad. Maybe someone needs to convince me but now I'd rather pick DCL

If Pogba hits the ground running again then that'll throw a big spanner in the works.. only option to get him in is downgrading 1 of Kane kun morata and don't think I'm willing too do that but he's only 8.0!

None of these to be done immediately, but planning ahead:

    A) Between Kane and Aguero, which one would you downgrade to strengthen the defence by getting some Chelsea (and potentially Tottenham) ?
    B) ..downgrade that one to Firmino or Vardy?
    C) Azpi is too expensive, but is he still worth the extra cash over Courtois?
    D) Vertonghen the safest way into Tottenham's defence?

    Ryan Elliot
    Otamendi Jones Daniels Tarkowski Mbemba
    Sane Salah Richarlison Gross Carroll
    Kane Aguero Morata

Your team is fine, turn those eyebrows upside down.

I’m also curious about question C

      1. Duffy Dunk
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

At C I mean ideally I'd go for Azpi. If it was just about clean sheets I'd only need Courtois, but Azpi seems to be a lot more involved in offensive play and gets assists and bonus. Is the +1.3 worth paying for?

        1. Garth Marenghi
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

          Yes.
But also, at 6.7, look at the points he brings in (assuming he generally continues on current pace which may be less reliable as a defender?) versus any other priced under 7-if you look at it that way, then I think he’s value.

I don't really like Firmino / Vardy as 3rd striker .... prefer to go a lot cheaper if I am not have 3 premium ones

Maybe if there were more choices around that price bracket but otherwise you end up being stuck with one or the other

    3. Jsadler95
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

      A) Aguero due to rotation risks
      B) Neither, but if one I'd just say Vardy edges it for me personally as I think Salah and Mane will get most of Liverpool's goals.
      C) I think he's worth it, think you're better off Pope in goal personally as he has a better points per 90 than De Gea (even more so when you exclude the first 54 min game he played where he kept a clean sheet but didn't get the extra points)
      D) I'd say so, way safer than the rest except Alderweireld but unsure on his injury currently.

      1. Jsadler95
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Extension on B) I'd personally say go Ayew or Niasse and spread the funds elsewhere. Could go Gross to Mane or Carroll to Pogba or something like that.

    4. FPLzebub

      A) Wait and see. For now i'd say keep Kane but that could change.
      B) Probably neither.
      C) Yes.
      D) Safest is a relative term. He's the most likely to start but he won't get attacking pts very often. I'd rather have Davies or Trippier or take my money elsewhere.

Very true. Yeah, looks like it.

Btw, as an Everton fan, what's your opinion of Unsworth?

Also, from an FPL perspective, where do you stand on Niasse/ DCL as cheap enablers?

        Thanks. 🙂

          • 13 Years

I like Unsy a lot but he's got to prove himself as a manager. It's too early to judge, there's been a good and bad from him already but fingers crossed I hope he does well. I'd love it if got the job permanently on merit.

DCL/Niasse. First off I'd want to see the new manager confirmed first because he may not fancy either. Sandro could easily be brought in or Rooney and played up top if it's someone new. If Unsy gets the job both would be far more secure. DCL is above Niasse. Both will probably get reduced minutes with Niasse on the bench. I'm just guessing here as there could well be changes if things aren't working obviously.
Personally they're not nailed or good enough imo for fpl right now but that could easily change. Out of the two DcL looks the best bet.

Morata, I think he's more reliable and predictable than Hazard who can absolutely run the show without returning so is thus also a better captain option but Hazard somehow gets to 200+ every season so still a good pick.

    2. Jsadler95

Personally I think for taking value into account I'd say Morata then Lukaku then Lacazette
Abraham, Murray, Calvert but depends on context of what you want them for.
Hazard, Eriksen, Sanchez taking value into account again.

Just testing the waters ahead of a captaincy pick. On a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being highest amount of risk, how risky to you think an Aguero captaincy over Kane/Salah would be gw12?

No much history LEI vs ManC .... Last 3 have been 4-2, 0-0, 0-1 ... Aguero did play any off them - Last year was Vardy hattie

The 0-0 match appears to be the only one that Aguero has played at LEI ... he was hooked after 64 minutes

I think any player that has doubts over their start can't be trusted with the arm band. Maybe against weak opposition its worth the risk, but Leicester isn't a gimme, or is it?
Bearing in mind there's CL game 3 days later, it adds to the uncertainty of pep's choice .
Given you have great captains in Kane or Salah, the risk maybe just too high on this occasion

      TL;DR.... 8/10 risk 😉

      1. We Will Klopp you
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

All good points, i know it's probably not wise to risk the captaincy on someone that may not start but it's just the upside of Kun in that City side that causes you to consider breaking all the golden rules. All things considered I think I'll go for Kane, cheers.

Definately captaining Kane. The form Spurs are in. The bad form Arsenal are in. Away from home, plus his record in the small amount of games he's played vs Arsenal. I could go on forever

I think it's almost more important to look at opposing defenses than the potential captain. It would've worked this week at least as West Ham were and have been deplorable.

I'm guessing the biggest gap in quality will be Leicester - Man City.

        Its not An easy choice.

I also have Sane, aguero & Morata in my team but I gotta go with that I know. And that is kane scores against arsenal, pretty much set in stone and I should know this cos I've been crying myself to sleep for the past 6 North London derbys 🙁

Tricky part there is predicting who's going to play for city.

I'd never have the guts to captain Jesus, or Sterling....and I'd be reluctant to pick Aguero or Sane either.

This may be hindsight but Sane has looked in very good condition, plus he doesn't have a good replacement and doesn't make dumb decisions or fluff chances like Sterling.

Sane looks great, I have him and Jesus.

But the rotation is too unpredictable to captain a city player.

Man U are starting to look like a bunch of has been. It seems like a bug going around the team to where even Valencia seemed dispirited. Smalling going for the dummy run this week didn't help I don't think.

This said, Pogba might be back, and Man U only has to be better than Newcastle who are looking poor under Rafa Benitez imo (the players he bought for the top flight have looked terrible: Joseph, Lejeune, are there others? Shelvey?)

I suppose. I like to think it's possible to point out to a player that, "This is why you suck: __________," and that they'd see the light and improve but maybe it isn't possible? Does a player really need to make 100k a week to be motivated? How much did Joselu make last week?

Most seasoned campaigners post a link to their FPL history on their profile.

I'd imagine he will..... but you have to ask yourself, do you really want him? paying 4.6 vs 4.5m for the right player isn't a big deal. if it's enough to put you off, then do you feel you actually need him?
Still some good options around 4.5m, and taking a hit for a liverpool defender (especially to save 0.1m) would be ill advised.
But ill keep my fingers crossed for you he doesn't rise.
      good luck 😉
