Captain Poll – Gameweek 12

With domestic action resuming this Saturday, we have launched our latest Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 12.

Following a tough run of fixtures for Manchester United, a home encounter with Newcastle United looks an ideal opportunity for Romelu Lukaku (11.5) to reach the summit for the first time since Gameweek 7. So far, he’s the leading candidate and has earned over 29% of the votes cast.

Despite failing to find the net in his last seven club matches, a brace for Belgium in their 3-3 friendly with Mexico last Friday bodes well for an upturn in fortunes.

The number one forward for sales (76,000+) for a second Gameweek running in Fantasy Premier League, Lukaku has an impressive home record, supplying four goals and two assists in five Old Trafford league matches.

In addition, the Newcastle backline has proved frail on the road, conceding in all but one of their five away days, while captain Jamaal Lascelles may well be an absentee through injury.

A visit to Leicester City means that Manchester City’s wealth of attacking options are among the Belgian’s main rivals for the armband.

However, rotation fears, particularly after a busy international break for many of their key players, may reduce confidence.

Sergio Aguero (11.8) may well lead the charge in our poll. He is the top scoring FPL forward with eight goals and three assists to his name.

However, it’s worth noting that the Argentine may be one of City’s weariest travellers over the break. After two friendly matches in Russia, including a clash against Nigeria tomorrow, Pep Guardiola may decide to ration Aguero’s minutes with one eye on the Champions League match against Feyenoord the following Tuesday.

Gabriel Jesus (10.5), who has started every away match in the league, could be another strong contender. As will FPL’s top scoring player, Leroy Sane (8.9), who has six goals and five assists this term. Over the international break more than 101,000 managers have brought in the German winger, who has four sets of double-digits in the last six.

With Raheem Sterling (8.2) a minor injury doubt, some may instead opt for the security of starts that midfield pair David Silva (8.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.1) can offer. Silva has caught the eye over the recent break, bagging a brace in Spain’s win over against Costa Rica.

However, it’s worth remembering that Leicester City won the corresponding fixture 4-2 last season, with Jamie Vardy (8.6) netting a hat-trick.

With Nicolas Otamendi sidelined through suspension in Guardiola’s backline, Vardy and Riyad Mahrez (8.4) could be set to profit. Certainly, the latter is the Foxes’ form player ahead of Saturday afternoon’s encounter, serving up attacking returns in each of his last four league matches.

Harry Kane (12.8) disappointed his 607,000 new owners and the 1.4m FPL managers who captained him with a blank against Crystal Palace last time out. It was the fifth time in six appearances at Spurs’ temporary home that Kane has failed to provide attacking returns. However, his record on the road and in London derbies is stacked in his favour ahead of trip to Arsenal.

Kane has netted twice in each of his last three away outings and has a fine record against the Gunners, scoring in all five league fixtures.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (10.3) is the hottest FPL property up front ahead of a trip to a West Brom side that’s managed just one clean sheet in nine Gameweeks.

After netting his seventh of the season against Man United, the summer signing was also on the scoresheet in Spain’s win over Costa Rica – he’s earned 91,000+ transfers in this Gameweek, more than any forward.

Morata has returned 28 points in his last three away appearances ahead of his visit to The Hawthorns.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.4) is another strong candidate this time around, with seven goals and three assists, ahead of Southampton’s trip to Anfield. Since his brace against West Ham in Gameweek 11, the Egyptian has been the top target in the transfer market with 149,000+ more owners.

Rested from international duties over the break, Salah looks a very enticing prospect if he continues in a new central role for the Reds – indeed, he’s joint-second with Kane in the Poll, with over 19% backing.

Among the differential options is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha (6.8), who hosts an Everton side that has shipped ten goals on the road. Since his return from injury, the Ivorian international has scored in both his home appearances.

Brighton’s Glenn Murray (5.8) is an intriguing alternative ahead of Stoke’s visit to the Amex. The veteran striker has scored four in his last three, while the visitors have conceded 11 on their travels.

And the Seagulls’ playmaker Pascal Gross (5.9) should also be considered, given that he has averaged 7.2 points per match in front of his own supporters.

Finally, Watford’s Richarlison (6.4) hosts West Ham in David Moyes’ first match in charge on Sunday.

Granted, all four of his goals have arrived in away matches, but the young Brazilian has still picked up points against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal at Vicarage Road.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 12 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

A post I read today on reddit, love it

Monday – Day 8 without FPL

It’s been 8 days since I last scored some points, and I can feel my skin starting to crawl.

I wake at 3am. The voices in my head echo. “Price changes”. Cold sweat permeates the bedding. No clean sheet for me tonight.

My phone is already gripped tightly in my hand, Phil Jones’ gurning face greets me as I frantically unlock it at the third time of asking. I refresh r/FantasyPL. Every fibre of my being prays that the FantasyPL_bot hasn’t let me down again as the page loads. My chest tightens, the wind outside my window taunts me... “Richarrrrrlisssson”.

YES! They’re here! My 19 page letter, written in blood, must have done the trick! For a moment, my anguish subsides as I contemplate saving the news for later. No. We need this, and we need it now. My thumb quivers as I tap the post. I can feel my teeth grind together...

No risers. Mounie falls. It’s not enough. My craving hasn’t subsided. I mutter to myself, “The original bandwagon”, and for a moment his name takes me back to Gameweek 1. A better time. The world at my feet, a whole season ahead of us and I’ve just transferred in this season’s Jamie Vardy, Steve Mounie. He’s scored two on his debut and got 14 for Montpellier last year. He’s going to be my enabler for a Kane Lukaku partnership. I’ve already pencilled him in for 10 goals before Christmas, he’s guaranteed to be part of the template and I’m in there early! My ramblings stir the girlfriend.

    “Go back to sleep”.

...She’ll never understand. How could she? Hollyoaks never has an international break. She gets -3 in the BPS for her troubles. I’ll be looking to transfer her out on my next wildcard. Too expensive, not captaincy material. I shuffle downstairs into the living room.

The next few hours are a blur. As I rock back and forth, my knees jerk and facts flash before my eyes: Kane has 6 in 6 vs Arsenal, United haven’t conceded at home, Jesus will travel 3,600 less miles than Aguero before their next match. Am I reading these, or am I hallucinating? It’s hard to tell anymore. The postman’s arrival pierces the silence. I check the clock – 6am on the dot. That’s 3 points for him, and 2 in the BPS for every letter delivered. He’s a consistent performer, always delivers over the Christmas period. Nailed on.

Only one letter is addressed to me. It’s from Pep. It’s always from Pep. His office have, once again, requested that I immediately cease and desist all communication upon threat of restraining order. They’re trying to keep us apart. They can’t. I won’t let them. Who are they? Are they in my mini-league? I suspect everyone. I must know who starts this weekend! I burn the letter in the fireplace with all the others. Josh King’s photo hangs above it. I check his goalscoring stats against Huddersfield.

    5 more days.

Sorry for the question, still confused.
If Wales isn't in England, then why are there "Welsh" teams in the English football league? i.e. Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham.

    1. Fozzyb34r

Because when Swansea, Cardiff and all other Welsh teams in the English leagues were formed, there was no Welsh league for them to join and the only option was the English leagues

        This is completely made up!

The Welsh Football league was founded in 1904 - Swansea City were founded in 1912.

        Doesnt make sense.

Every Welsh club in the English league (Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham, Newport) was formed at a time when there wasn't a Welsh league. The League of Wales was only formed in 1992, a long time after these clubs were formed. So these clubs have always been in the English league. It was their choice whether or not they wanted to join the League of Wales. They decided to stay in the English league because they thought they could do better in the English league (the League of Wales is mostly amateur and Cardiff and Swansea have a proud history of winning FA Cups and playing in the top division). The Welsh teams can always choose where they play, in Wales or in England. They have chosen to play in England for financial and football reasons.

How to fund Jesus > Aguero for free?

    A) Alonso > 5.6m defender
    B) Otamendi > 4.5m defender
    C) Don't get Aguero

    Team:
    Elliot (Myhill)
    Alonso, Jones, Ward, Duffy (Otamendi)
    Salah, Richarlison, Gross (Choupu-Moting, RLC)
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

I have all Kane, Morata & Aguero and am fairly happy with the balance in my team atm. 15 starters in the squad and only one 4.5 mid. May downgrade one over the busy xmas fixtures to upgrade midfield and/or defense.

      Current team is:

      Elliot/Speroni
      Jones/Otamendi/Ward/Fernandez/Dunk
      Salah/D Silva/Richarlison/Gross/Carroll
      Kane/Ageuro/Morata

6 out of the top 30 fpl scorers this season are forwards. 21 are from midfield or defence. Rather have points than act out of bias.

The top three forwards (Aguero, Kane and Lukaku) will set you back 36.1m.
Sane, Salah, Azpilicueta and de Gea are all outscoring Lukaku, and those 4 will set you back a further 30.8m.
If your budget is 102.0m, then that leaves just 35.1m for the other 8 players in your squad (one 4.0m goalkeeper, four 4.0m non-playing defenders, three 4.5m midfielders and 1.6m to upgrade some of these).
So if you want the top three forwards and also the four other players who are outscoring Lukaku then the rest of your squad will be extremely weak.
In order to strengthen this last eight, you will have to downgrade some of the first seven - you can't have them all, and midfielders and defenders offer better value than forwards.

Only one for me, which is currently Kane.

Mourinho has put me off Lukaku all season
Have 2 City mids which seems enough and a cheaper risk
      Morata is tempting
      Lacazette is way over priced

      All depends on team value.

I've got three premium forwards and I'm pretty happy with the structure and balance of my team:

      Pope / Elliot
      Mee / Jones / Fernandez / Naughton / Monreal
      Salah / Eriksen / Richarlison / Loftus-Cheek / Carroll
      Aguero / Kane / Morata

      0.7 ITB

Monreal and Carroll soon to be Daniels and Gros
      Naughton to go shortly after

Pretty easily really, I started the season with 3 big strikers and was weak in other key areas as a result to fit them in, 2 of the strikers blanked and left the rest woefully exposed, you are relying on 3 players too much, some weeks it'll work, when it don't you'll be in trouble.

If in doubt with regards to how important it is to have 3 big ones up front, look in the members league and check out Fabio Borges, think he's no 1 or 2 in the league, hes played all season with 2 big strikers and a dead 4.5 striker, I'm guessing most would swap ranks with him right now.

        Agreed.
Had 2 strikers gw1 with a good midfield incl KDB and Salah
Wildcarded in gw7 in order to get 3 big hitters... midfield became weaker and as a result of strikers blanking I really suffered in OR.
Dropped from OR 11k to OR 85k after changing structure

I think it's because of Eriksen, most people have close to 10m stuck in him. Yes he is FPL royalty and is going to get consistent returns, but I didn't see him returning like the premium strikers over the last month or so and so when I switched to 343/433 he was never under consideration.

If you go with 3 premium up top, Salah, City mid, and skip a Spurs mid, then it works. But if you insist on having Eriksen/Alli in your team, you're 'forced' to let go of one premium striker

it's about balance for me and you have to nail the captaincy.
Arguably only GW6 when all the big 4 strikers returned.
GW4 when 4 okay returns. 1 GW when 3 returned, maybe 3 GWS when 2 returned. 5 GWS when 1 or none returned.

      GW kane lukaku morata Aguero
      1 1 13 10 9
      2 1 6 2 2
      3 2 0 12 1
      4 13 6 6 9
      5 2 12 1 20
      6 13 7 17 11
      7 13 6 1 0
      8 2 2 0 0
      9 16 5 1 7
      10 0 5 5 0
      11 2 2 8 8

Maybe this is just a bandwagon I'm not seeing and will miss out on but so far can't justify it. 3k OR based on balanced side with defence probably main reason for rank. Had Kane/Lukaku, Jesus and Firmino/Vardy all season. For me the obvious move still seems to be downgrade to Vardy to Abraham and more funds into mids.(rather than upgrade)

keep saying i'll give it one more week!
His goals per minutes (since he began at City) is ridiculous even better than Kun's. But 10.5m for a striker who's game time seems to limit his goal potential (even though 1 every 90 minutes) is expensive. A run of 4 20 minute sub appearances could mean a single return over 4 GWs. Never know with Pep.

I think plan atm is he goes for Lukaku or Morata. Possibly Lukaku next 3 GWs then Morata. Just because they'll get more game time atm. A kun injury and he would be straight back in.

        agreed

I have Kane Morata and Vardy but I will soon downgrade Vardy to a cheapo striker and invest in midfield

Will then have Kane Morata, Salah, Sterling + one of Alli/Sané + Richarlison and RLC in midfield (but Dem' Gray is tempting too)

With a strong def of Azpi, Jones, Stones, Maguire and Mee which will allow me to switch formation according to fixtures (442 most games, sometimes 532, and even 433 or 343 if thris striker has a very good fixture.

slightly different in that I will have a cheaper defence of Jones, Mee, Stones, Dann & Daniels.
But will be doing Choupo & Vardy to Alli & Abraham. But we look like ending up with the same mids.

I think what most seen to overlook when marvelling at having 3 strikers is that your advantage is only 1 striker because everyone else has 2 of them.

So in reality it's your 1 extra striker v some teams with better mids and defenders as a result of balancing teams better.

      team is:

      Elliot- Darlow
      Azpilicueta - Duffy - Ward - Naughton - Femenia
      Salah - Sané - Richarlison - Groß - Carroll
      Morata - Kane - Jesus

      102.8 - 667 points

      Happy with the setup.

FPL is not a game where those who find the best 3 of existing 5 Premium strikers win the Competition.

Get 3 Premium strikers and you will soon be amazed to see how easily you lose on value.

You got to have a balanced team and unless you have 4 consistently functioning midfileders (and you will not, if you spend that much money on forwards), your 3 Premium forwards will fail in the long run.

        This. Well written.
I would like to add to it about Kane. Yes he is explosive. He is nailed. He can really damage the non owners, but that's as an individual.
When you see the 2. Something used elsewhere and get a better combo say

Kane and richarlison Vs morata and sterling /sane

        That's where the game changes.

Exactly mate, to the point on where the game changes. And your post makes me re-think about my own strategy. I currently have Kane, Agüero and Abraham. I seem to be in a mistake perhaps. I have two explosive but inconsistent premiums, whereas perhaps, one should choose between Kane or Agüero and plus have Lukaku or Morata to have an even more balanced team.

"How can I not love Kane, Kun et al?"

Very easily. Kaku is a waste of money and Kun sits on the bench every other week so why on earth would you even want them?

Kane, Vardy and Abrahams for me. Morata is the only one that slightly interests me.

Otherwise, a milfield of Eriksen, Richalison, Sane, Salah is the way to go.

Less likely maybe but I'd doubt free...too many other options in their midfield...

I have a forward line of Kane vardy and rashford.
Views on getting kaku for a hit(-4) this week?
I can only get a 4.9 striker(thinking niasse) along with him. Worried about kaku's upside as captaincy!

Have Hazard already from Chelsea attack and wanted to get kaku for the upcoming 3 good fixtures. So maybe get kaku now and switch to morata after gw 15?

This is the week to cover him with the C, there's a good chance of a haul which could be quite damaging.

      Pick your battles.

Will Eriksen survive the Price Fall before the Press Conferences on Thursday? Would like to get Mane in for him but wanna be assured he's fit to play

Too many options... help please 😉

    Pope / Elliot
Alonso, Ward, Daniels / Fernandez, Cedric
Salah, Silva, Richarlison, Choupo-Moting / Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    2 FT, 0.5 ITB

    A) Alonso + Jesus ---> Jones* + Lukaku (0.8 ITB, Vardy stays because difficult do pick the right cheaper replacement)
    B) Cedric + Jesus + Vardy ---> Jones + Lukaku + King/Murray -4 (0.4/1.6 ITB)
    C) Alonso + Jesus + Vardy ---> Jones + Lukaku + Murray -4 (3.5 ITB to upgrade Choupo > Sane/Sterling next GW)
    D) Alonso + Jesus + Vardy ---> Duffy + Lukaku + King -4 (3.3 ITB to upgrade Choupo > Sane/Sterling next GW)

*Jones only comes in if fit...

        thx!
I've also considered this move but the problem could be if I need Sane/Sterling/Alli in would need a -8 to bring one of them in.

Looking a next weeks fixtures Huddersfield v City and Spurs v West Brom really stand out.
So Choupo out for a City mid with 1 FT or maybe a -4 could be a good move.
