Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

There’s something special about a Gameweek under lights and, even with just four matches to get things underway, there is excitement and expectation in equal measure.

Tonight’s eight teams boast enough Fantasy talent to deliver significant points – not least Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, who will doubtless be the top two captain picks on show yet again.

The smart money – and the armbands from active Fantasy managers – are likely to be with the Spurs striker, as Kane revisits the ground where he fired an incredible 31 point return in 2016/17.

His owners will gladly accept a more modest tally this time around, though having scored six of his nine goals on the road this season, double-figures could again be within reach.

Less is expected of Lukaku, who will collide with a Watford defence that has kept back-to-back clean sheets. The Belgian’s form remains a concern, with his recent strike against Newcastle his only goal in the last six Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, the big news from The Hawthorns is that Newcastle United’s goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, has been dropped from Rafa Benitez’s line-up. Priced at 4.0 initially this season, Elliot boasts an ownership of 26.4% who must now turn to their reserve option. For the managers who also own Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni, there is no reserve option, ensuring they look set to be forced to market ahead of Gameweek 15.

Talking of Palace, news from their “local derby” with Brighton finds Christian Benteke in the starting line-up for the visitors, with cut-price midfielder Ruben Loftus Cheek perhaps moving to a No 10 role to accommodate his return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Best cheap keeper?

My 1st choice would be Lossl. Other potential replacements are Ryan, Begovic, Foster in that order.

I've got Firmino stuck in my team at the moment and just not good value on current form (though good fixtures to come..)

Is it worth taking a hit to get him and Richarlison (urgh - only option) to go to Loftus Cheek and Morata?

    FFPro
    • 9 Years

My main gripe with the bonus point system is that there is 3 bps awarded for a "big chance created". Distinguishing between a big chance created and a regular chance created is done entirely subjectively. Kane was awarded 1 big chance created (to Sissoko), if the one to Rose was also determined a big chance, then he'd have ended up on 2 bonus points. Not to mention there is -3 bps for missing a "big chance".

It's clunky, but at the end of the year it probably all evens out: you are going to benefit from the clunkiness sometimes, and get hurt by the clunkiness sometimes.

Oh, certainly. I understand the frustration. But I'm sure people who complain about it have gotten an extra bonus point from a captain when it DIDN'T seem warranted. Again, it all evens out unless you are somehow very unlucky.

Luck evening out is a myth. For me at least.

Personally I lose far more bonus each week than I gain after the final update. Maybe because I own players like Salah and Richarlison, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating especially when the captain is involved and 1 "big chance" is the difference between 4points and 0.

The long run isn't over yet.

And when you know that the rules say that missed shots will remover baps, you should be prepared to get less baps compared to points from heavy shooters like Kane, Richarlison, and Salah. They are always going to miss a lot of shots because they shoot so much.

Fwiw, I think they're still worth having, because goals are the priority.

Well, wait a second, what you are describing is mostly not unlucky. The criteria for bonus points are clearly laid out on FPL's official site. You have chosen to include players in your side - like Salah and Richarlison - who do things that hurt them in terms of accruing BPS. Now, I'm not suggesting you get rid of those players, but if you only care about bonus, then get Gross, Femenia, Pope, and Rooney.

"Luck evening out is a myth, for me a least". By the very nature of luck, of course it evens out over time.

I call this selective memory. This poster conveniently forgets that very recently he captained Aguero, who stayed rooted to the bench, and his vice captain Salah hauled.

I can understand his frustration, but the bonus point system is pretty darn good imo. There is always room for improvement, as well as individuals perception of their personal misfortunes 🙂

I concur with this thought. Sure, this GW I was denied 4BPS from a captain Kane- but just 2 weeks ago I benefitted from Pope getting 2 BPS despite only making one save & Daniels getting 2BPS even though he provided zero attacking returns.

The season does even out, but nobody cares when we get lucky- just when we miss out.

If they go by Opta, as I think they do, then that is not completely subjective. They can count average rates at which are converted different types of shots from different types of passes from different locations with different numbers of defenders between them and goal. And then just set a limit for when the chance is big. I recall it's something like 40% conversion rate, but may be mistaken about it. Of course, "big chances" are not equally big. A 70% chances is significantly better than a 40% chance, and the both are treated the same. But you have to draw the line somewhere.

I doubt the FPL towers have the balls to make any real changes to the BAPs system. Especially now. Maybe over the summer but still unlikely. They are a pu*sy bunch of cover their asses types. If they actually had any balls, Lukaku would have been suspended for those repeated karate kicks straight into a defenders stomach. The fact is they saw exactly what we saw and choose to not do the right thing. So credibility is shot. They are as corporate as everyone else trying to make money off your interest level.

I'm pretty sure the people who administer FPL have no influence over whether to issue a retrospective ban on a player in real life.

Posted this a couple of days ago :

Why does the BPS system view shots off target as a negative (-1). Surely any attempt on goal however wayward is a positive contribution, or neural at worst.

Ridiculous really that attempts on goal are considered a negative contribution. SOT should just carry a higher rating.

Considering Eriksen's attempt last night I would say it's fair that the baps system punished him

Not sure I agree - shots by definition are more likely to score if they're on target. If the player can't shoot straight then he shouldn't shoot.

Do you want positive bonus for goalkeepers who nearly save shots as well?

Would you pull the trigger on Chalobah -> Loftus-Cheek? Won't be able to afford it after tonight.

Yeah, got 0.2 ITB so rather than ripping up team for a keeper I'm going to do Elliot to Hennessey.

Hennessey has to be a good Elliot replacement if Darlow remains first choice

    Tomorrow is massive...

Lots of my rivals have morata captain.

I don't own him but have Jesus instead....

Captained Kane.. ..hoping morata stays quiet...

As a morata owner i hope for an assist or goal at most with no bonus. As a Kane captainer too I think this would be as much as I can take.
