Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Lukaku and Lingard Seal Victory

First-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard were just enough for Manchester United to claim victory at The Hawthorns, as a Gareth Barry strike for West Brom broke the hearts of David De Gea’s growing army of Fantasy owners.

Lukaku’s towering header from a Marcus Rashford cross gave the Belgian back to returns for the first time since Gameweek 7.

Backed by 819,000+ (14.9%) with the captaincy, Lukaku has now scored three in his past four appearances in all competitions.

Together with two bonus points, an eight-point return for the striker means that he is finally showing signs of turning the corner and reviving his stock as a premium-priced option.

Lukaku increased his ownership for the first time since Gameweek 7 prior to the meeting with the Baggies. But he had shed over 1.4 million over those ten previous Gameweeks.

Improved form, coupled with Man United’s fixtures could now help him reclaim some of those numbers.

Lukaku will face Leicester City next weekend, before Old Trafford encounters with Burnley and Southampton. That final home encounter falls in Gameweek 21, the blank for Harry Kane.

Lingard the Pogba alternative

Elsewhere in United’s attack, it is Jesse Lingard who has shown promise as a cut-price midfield option.

Valued at just 5.9 in FPL, Lingard again started in the No 10 role, flanked by Juan Mata and Rashford. His deflected strike from a Mata lay-off took him to four goals from his last three away matches.

Lingard claimed the maximum bonus points to give him a third double-figure return in five Gameweeks.

He is perhaps unfortunate that he has timed his ascent as a Fantasy prospect just as Paul Pogba returns to the equation.

The Frenchman – now down to 7.9 and 9.0% ownership in FPL – is back from suspension for the midweek EFL Cup tie at Bristol City, though he will likely be saved instead for the trip to the King Power Stadium.

Pogba averages 7.0 points per match and will doubtless be a key transfer target over the festive period.

He is already the fourth most-signed midfielder ahead of Gameweek 19, and his return to the United starting line-up could change the dynamic of their attack. This impacts on Lingard’s minutes and his current scoring rate requires monitoring.

Valencia blow as De Gea is denied

Gareth Barry’s second-half strike dragged West Brom back into Sunday’s contest and deprived Man United and David De Gea an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign.

The Spaniard still made four saves at The Hawthorns and has now produced at least one save point in seven of his last nine Gameweeks.

Mourinho kept faith with a back four having deployed a three-man defence in previous away matches.

That saw Phil Jones retain his start alongside Chris Smalling, with that pair seemingly the first choice centre-back partnership. It was the first time that Jones has started two matches within seven days this season.

Both Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof were on the bench but will likely get minutes at Bristol City and at least one of the four Gameweek outings to come.

Rojo did see action in the second period, replacing an injured Antonio Valencia who limped off on 65 minutes to claim a clean sheet for his 17.6% ownership. The Ecuadorian is now back at the top of the defender standings, though Mourinho confirmed post-match that the right-back had sustained a hamstring problem.

“This is what I call a December injury. It is an injury of accumulation of fatigue. It is a muscular one. Hamstring. Big, small, medium, I don’t know.”

However, Valencia was quick to play down concerns via social media earlier this evening, going on to say.

“Thanks for your support and concern. I am fine”.

Although that offers hope of a quick recovery, given how key he is to Mourinho’s plans, it’s perhaps unlikely that United will take any chances with Valencia and the Portuguese yet protect him over the Christmas fixtures. Valencia is yet to miss a Premier League appearance this season.

Depending on the prognosis, that could open the way for a number of options, including Rojo, Matteo Darmian (5.0) and even Luke Shaw (4.9) given that Ashley Young could be switched to the right to cover.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The attacking 'template' is so strong and the players in that template are performing so well that I cant see a way to upgrade my rank from the current mediocrity of 300K.

I've stuck with a pretty template Kane Lukaku Haz Salah Silva Ramsey and DDG for most of the season and sit at 4k so it's probably captain choice. Currently in Rishikesh and loving it here.

So provided Kenny isnt injured, Kiko->Kenny a good move? Need to put in a CB to have 3 playing defs.
    Defenders
    Tark (ban incoming)
    Duffy (Suspension)
Wimmer (plays, but get a typical 0 )
    Jones (consistent, a season keeper)
Kiko (injured, Wat Defence pretty bad anyways)

Maybe someone like Masuaku or Ogbonna perhaps?

For those asking why Tark ban...

one advantage pogba has is similar priced players like coutinho sterling sane will get a rest or two over christmas meanwhile pogba is nailed to start all of them.

        or just hazard --> pogba?

there arent many options in forward that are better options than morata while in midfeild tehre are many cheaper alternatives to hazard who can score similarly. (silva/pog/cout etc)

Morata is a clear risk over the Christmas period, starting on the bench shows that his injury is real.

Honestly I have been thinking of going to hazard to pogba because out of sterling salah hazard I reckon hazard is the worst fpl player which is concerning considering he is the highest priced. The only concern for me is a lot of pogba shots are outside the box compared to hazard more inside the box. That being said I'm a United fan my favourite player is pogba and i miss the triple up i used to have of mkhi jones lukaku so I may go for pogba jones lukaku triple up just cause it's more fun

I'm 100% getting him to go 5 in MF, just deciding if it's worth it for a -4 or not for RLC.

RLC is a wasted spot, when you have him you're tempted to play and he rarely produces so want that temptation gone.

I'm keeping Morata for the next three games - Everton (a), Brighton (h), Stoke (h). Fixtures are just too good to ditch just yet.

His next one after those is Arsenal (a), I hope to have moved him on by then.

Plan is to switch him out for Austin or Rooney and bring Pogba in for RLC, that will give me a midfield of Richarlison, Pogba, Hazard, Sterling and Salah.

Kane only premium forward with DCL and Austin rotating or sitting on the bench.

OK related question- I want in to Utds midfield, and currently tossing up between Pogba and Lingard.

Pogba has the well identified positives, but by bringing in Lingard I have £2m elsewhere.

Do we think Pog is £2m better?

(with Lingard I'd probably end up upgrading Vardy to Firminho/Morata)

Right. I mean, Msauaku plays the more demanding position, so I guess there is slightly less chance of him playing both games in the double, but he also is under less threat from the likes of Fonte and Collins returning.

Arnie can be a Richarlison replacement for GW22, means Richarlison gets the time he deserves as he has the fixtures and has been a good pick.

Nope. He is staying until GW22. Was still their most threatening player this week, even a man down. And home to Leicester and Swansea are just too good to pass up. His dip has been through no fault of his own.

I wouldn't make too much of Silva's comments. And with Watford's current form and Deeney now banned, I don't see how he can drop his most threatening player.

Does Mustafi -> Masuaka leave you enough cash for Ozil -> Hazard next week?

I'd also be a little tempted with Kane -> Aguero for the next 3, but expect I'm alone with that.

I would. With Azpi, Ota & Jones you can easily afford to downgrade, and like you say, LIV, wba, cpl, CHE isn't the easiest for clean sheets. I'd also want Hazard for BHA, STO in 20/21.

That would mean extraordinary chunk of the budget on them, should downgrade Azpi to Christensen or Morata to Firmino before getting Haz

Mustafi to Masuaku/Kenny does make sense though, cheers Jins

Morning all, would you take a -4 and bring Pogba in for RLC?

I know Palace have Swansea but RLC is one of those who scores points when benched and doesn't when you play him.

It's Christmas, don't mind spending the 4 just thinking of the timing.

Nah, not this week. CPL in decent form and SWA the opposite, plus they are quite leaky at home. Wouldn't expect anything big from RLC but the odd goal or assist is certainly possible.

Aguero isn't nailed. Not in form.

Agree he's not nailed, but he's first choice and on pens in a rampant MCY attack with great fixtures. A calculated gamble. Kane also not on form (3 blanks in last 4), he has bur, SOT, blank up next, and he's 1 booking away from a ban.

Just 1 assist in last 5 is not promising at all.The kid is feeling the pace of premier league with games coming thick and fast.
