Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Sterling Back On Goal Trail

Raheem Sterling’s two goals put pay to any Tottenham Hotspur challenge at the Etihad Stadium, as Pep Guardiola’s charges overcame the absence of playmaker David Silva with another outstanding attacking display.

Sterling’s brace in a 4-1 victory masked a mixed evening’s work for the winger, who really should have had at least a hat-trick. His six efforts on goal arrived via four big chances, two of which went begging.

But Sterling’s 1.1 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners will still be more than happy with a 12-point return, if not the fact that his prolifigacy cost the winger bonus points.

Sterling has now produced 11 goals, with Fantasy returns in seven of his last ten appearances. Perhaps more crucially, he has been named in Guardiola’s starting line-up in nine of the last ten matches in all competitions, including the previous eight Gameweeks.

Sterling would seem likely to get a rest in the EFL Cup tie with Leicester City in midweek, setting him up for another start against Bournemouth in Gameweek 19.

In his current form – and with captaincy options limited by the fixtures – Sterling now becomes a serious armband candidate.

A goal every 109.8 minutes is an extraordinary record for a midfield option. He is second only to Mohamed Salah over the season for that metric, along with FPL’s points per match statistic over the season (7.0 vs 7.5) before the Egyptian’s run-out at Bournemouth today.

Sterling is currently the most bought FPL player ahead of Gameweek 19, with his price peaking at a season-high 8.4

De Bruyne charges on

While Sterling continues to deliver, Kevin De Bruyne maintained his steep ascent as a Fantasy asset.

The Belgian’s goal output has increased considerably, with Saturday’s strike his fifth in eight Gameweeks. He’s now delivered back-to-back double-digit scores, with five for the season as a whole.

Sealing the three bonus points, De Bruyne is now giving chase to Salah at the top of the FPL midfield standings on 113, with Sterling (112) and Silva (102) making up three of the top four.

Leroy Sane (95) trails that trio of team-mates, but revived his Fantasy stock with a pair of assists on Saturday. That represented his first attacking returns since Gameweek 11, though he is still without a goal since a strike at The Hawthorns back in Gameweek 10.

Along with Sterling, it is De Bruyne who is tempting investment as the second most bought player ahead of Gameweek 19 so far.

There’s no question that sales of David Silva are fuelling those trades.

The Spaniard was the most popular transfer target heading into Saturday’s deadline, finding his way into 278,000 new squads.

But he was absent from City’s teamsheet due to personal reasons, which currently remain unexplained.

There were tributes made to Silva from the City players during and after Saturday’s win, and we can only wait on more information and hope that all is well with him and his loved ones.

City Strikers fade out

The fact that a mention of Man City’s strikers is now almost an afterthought underlines just how their midfield has overpowered both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Silva as assets.

Saturday did little to change that situation.

A disgruntled Aguero was hooked before the hour mark as his job share with Jesus continued. The Brazilian was introduced, only to miss a penalty kick to deliver a -1 return.

Jesus is without a goal in his last five Gameweek appearances, while Aguero boasts two over the same time frame. However, that is dwarfed by the rates currently being achieved by Sterling and De Bruyne.

Kane escapes for abject Spurs

Harry Kane’s failure to register points at the Etihad was perhaps no surprise.

However, his agricultural challenge on Sterling that could, and should, have earned a straight red card certainly was.

The striker was booked and must now avoid a caution at Burnley in Gameweek 19 to avoid a one-match ban.

Kane lost over 93,000 in ownership ahead of Saturday’s match.

But despite another single point return, sales have currently slowed ahead of the Turf Moor trip. He’s showing a net loss of just over 4,000 at the time of writing.

That reflects a market distracted by movement in midfield and also the fact that there remains no convincing option to replace the Spurs striker.

With Alvaro Morata restricted to an appearance from the bench in Gameweek 18, it will likely take points from Romelu Lukaku or Roberto Firmino to push Kane’s owners to the exit.

Elsewhere for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, Christian Eriksen maintained his recent revival with a consolation goal.

The Dane has now returned two goals and two assists over his last four Gameweeks to keep Son Heung-min at bay as the weapon of choice in the Spurs midfield.

Son did, however, start a fourth successive league outing and has now missed just two of the last 11 Gameweeks.

In defence, Pochettino opted to hand Danny Rose back-to-back league starts for the first time this season, with Ben Davies left on the bench until the 90th minute.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Lessons learned from Gameweek 18 so far….

    Round one to the Kanexiters.

Spurs’ tricky fixture run (mci, bur, SOU, blank) prior to yesterday’s deadline presented Fantasy managers with an opportunity to ditch their troublesome talisman Kane and spread his mighty budget across the team. While some, like Hall of Fame number one Jay, took this to new heights with a -12 hit, others may have simply swapped him for another and upgraded a midfielder.

With just one point against City for Kane, round one of this festive four-fixture contest went to the Kanexiters.

With the final round a certainty for the Kanexiters, given Spurs don’t play then, the best Kaneremainers can hope for now is a draw.

Do you think Kane can do enough and earn that draw for the Kaneremainers, with points against Burnley and Southampton?

So far those brave enough to dump him can feel happy with the way the battle is progressing so far.

West Ham enablers continue to impress

Across midfield and particularly defence the Hammers offer a raft of superb fantasy assets that can not only free up cash but also provide strong returns.

Masuaka and Ogbonna (although the latter may be at risk when Fonte returns) look stand out picks at the back. Lanzini and Arnautovic are impressive in midfield. With a DGWK 22 and a bench-able budget price tag for their GWK 21 blank a Hammer investment looks very wise.

    Hazard needs Morata

Hazard owners need to see Morata in the team sheet if they hope to get returns from the Belgian. Without his Spanish team-mate too often Hazard’s killer passes were wasted.

Whether you own Morata or not…if you have Hazard you will want to see him back in the starting XI against Everton. But even then is £21m or so wrapped up in a Chelsea attack meeting Big Sam’s resilient Toffees really wise?

    Manchester (C)ity impress yet again

They keep impressing and this is key for the captaincy with their Gameweek 19 encounter at the Etihad with Bournemouth looking the most enticing fixture next weekend. Sterling looks an ideal armband candidate. But then so too does KDB, especially if Silva remains absent.

Those without a City midfield asset ahead of Gameweek 19 may want to consider how they can get one in.

Be good to hear your thoughts on any of the above as well as any key lessons you learned?

Hits are viable if you know a defender is injured or isn't going to play and you're left with 2 at the back. It genuinely is a -2 as you'd score 0 otherwise. A good defender pick may return 8 or 9 points, not the typical max of 6, like the old days.

        Indeed.

I think the southampton game looks the only chancefor Kaneremainers to do well. That's one in four - not great.

I've kept Kane, as I already have 2.8 itb through the Morata sale so that removed the key motivating factor - free up funds and invest elsewhere.

Looking forward to the Scoutcast this week. I don’t think it’s too late to get him out. I’d be shocked if Spurs scored more than one at Burnley... and Southampton proved yesterday they can shut up shop away to the big teams.

If i had WC or 2 FT he would have been gone for sure!

A lot of us still have other fires to put out in our team so kane had to begrudgingly stay!

This week i did B.Davies to xtensen with FT so it made sense to keep kane...also theres no other strikers on form so i didnt want to take a hit cz i didnt think it would pay off

        🙂

See above. The Morata sale was the clincher for me. Simply no need for me to make the move as got pots in the bank already.

But if I'd have kept Morata then I definitely would have done it.

Mark and I do like your Jonty copies Mark moves comments though. We had a good chuckle about it the other day... he even copied my move of Kenny to try to throw you off the scent 😉

Ha ha, glad you like them! I guess things like the ScoutCast (and this place in general) do encourage "groupthink" - if you state an idea on the and three or four other top FPL managers criticise it, it's difficult not to doubt yourself and think "maybe I'm being silly here". But, actually, your original idea to sell Kane and bring him back might have been golden.

Its the Morata millions that swung it rather than those pesky scoutcasters in this case. 😉

I suppose NONE of West Ham fans can give us any hint. There is one man who knows the answer. His name is David Moyes. All other opinions re Masuaku/Ogbonna are only hopes and assumptions.
We all remember So'ton fans view on their team backline at the early stage of the season - we read lot of opinions that Stephens will be nailed, he is great in ball distribution etc.We know how it ends.

But lesson of the week (or two weeks for me) is one that is said all the time and cannot be said enough. POINTS, NOT POUNDS. have made dumb early transfers to catch price changes. Sometimes works out, like it did for Mark last week, but I could do with the peace of mind of not having to worry about players getting injured during the week.

I have both Morata and Kane.

I am holding on to them as there are no other clear cut choices up front. I'm pretty happy with my midfield (Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Richarlison and Magic Bean) so I'm not tempted to downgrade a big gun striker for another midfielder. My defence could do with an upgrade but would require some major surgery, so looks like I'll hang on to Kane and Morata through the Xmas / New year period.

One move I am considering is Hazard to KDB...

For my own personal situation I came to the conclusion I would end up spending around 12 points in hits taking Kane out, upgrading another player and then getting Kane back (as well as doing other transfers). I won't keep an accurate count of if I'm up or not but I just didn't fancy doing this. I also feel Kane could easily score against Burnley, despite how tough they've been this season.

Let's cut to the chase. KdB, Sterling, Silva, Salah, Coutinho and arguably, Hazard are all worth having in our midfielders over keeping Kane.

It's only worth keeping if you have other fires to put out and/or plan to captain Kane in the DGW and don't want to spend FT's and hits getting him back in.

I wonder if it's not reasonable to ditch all premium strikers really. Lukaku, Kane, Morata, Aguero, non of them seems to be worth his price. Kane is 12.9 and he is outscored by 5 midfielders, De Gea, and Alonso has only 7 points less.

You can say that captaincy makes a difference, but can we really trust captaining Kane, after all his unreliability this season? You will be afraid to captain him against weaker sides sitting deep and against big teams as well, so when we are exactly captaining him? Not to mention that Spurs are really looking much worse than last season.

Morata? Is someone really tempted to captain him? It doesn't sound exciting... With easy fixtures majority will go with Hazard anyway.

With Lacazette, Aguero and Jesus there is too much rotation risk.

And let's take De Bruyne for example. He didn't get any attacking returns in only 4 of last 15 fixtures and he plays every game. I am more willing to captain him really than any forward.

I think I will sell Kane and maybe Morata in the near future and invest the money in midfield and defence. Your thoughts?

As much as I love this site, it almost makes me overthink some moves. I agree with you here.

My defence has been stinging me for weeks and my poor captaincy choices (often this has been Kane) - I think I'm going to downgrade him so I can upgrade my defence, then reassess whether Hazard or Morata can be downgraded when Kane's double gameweek arrives.

that a key FPL rule is even more relevant during this crazy congestion - look & plan for groups of GWs.
Interesting how many on this site have already been able to get West Ham in for the DGW & taking the bonus pts from yesterday's game
Interesting yesterday how many posters were talking about points on bench. Unlucky maybe but still a sign of good FPL management. A Salah no-show (for non-captainers) could see a lot on this site actually getting a nice little bonus with points from bench compared to other players.

Morata injury stopped me ditching Kane , will now keep until the Dgw then see ,so far this’week 1 striker would be enough , so f only 4strikers score more than 5and none of those will be most teams

Maybe Kane or one premium striker and very cheap but playing is best way to go for time being , so will switch between 4-5-1 and 3-5-2

One thing for Kaneremainers to remember is that they are up +8 points without a ball being kicked because all kane exiters with get him back in 3-4 GWs time. So that needs to be accounted for in the win / draw calculation.

I will use free hit for the dgw to get Kane. Really not sold on the idea that the best use for free hit is a blank gw where only the poor sides are playing.

      1) We are missing out on a lot of points by not captaining City players. It is all about captaining the right ones. We keep focusing on the forwards when it is the midfielders that are delivering the big points. Of course KDB is the best option followed by Sterling. I wouldn't be comfortable captaining anyone else.

      2) The problem is not in Kane alone but in Spurs as a whole. They are broken and they have been found out. Their squad is thin and not rotating wisely. When the champions league kicks in, they will prioritize it as they are not in the title race anymore. They will probably struggle to make top 4.

They can't afford to prioritise the champions league as top 4 is their priority. The only way they get to prioritise champions league is if top 4 is not achievable or if 5th is so far behind that they have top 4 secured

Fonte is rubbish, I sure hope Ogbonna does not lose his spot to him! By the way, it's Masuaku or was that intentional? 😉

Too risky to sell Kane, as AZ mentioned on the ScoutCast, it would only be beneficial if you could quickly bring him back in, such as Sanchez --> Kane. But Sanchez is so off the boil, that is not gonna happen!

My lesson is that every year there will come a time when you want to play 3-5-2. Always. Midfielders always emerge in numbers, unlike forwards who exist barely. So I am now thinking of how to exit Kane or Morata so that I can update Ramsey and Young to Pogba and Sterling/Sane.

With hindsight I’m happy I kept Kane, I’d have transferred him to Sanchez (c) or Aguero for a -4 and my team would be in a far worse state than it is now.

The lack of options for Kane in the premium bracket is sparse, i consider Lukaku and that tells you a lot, i don´t like him or rate him, looks like a clubbered Kane, clumsy and not suited to play for a top 6 team. Morata could be an option but he is so wasteful and Chelsea are damn right uninspiring.

I think Lanzini at 6.8 after his ban could be a nice route into their attack but Stoke is utterly shite and West Ham will not run riot offensively every time, as long as Moyes is their manager-) so i wouldn´t expect Lanzini to go 15 points too often.

The notion that Ogbonna is the one most under threat when Fonte is back seems to me a wrong assumption. Much more likely that Cresswell is moved to left while Ogbonna could both play down the middle and in the left cb position as he is naturallly left footed.

Richarlison keeps firing shot but never seems to get them on target and watford despite their run looks in shambles, is it time to move on? I had another issue to deal with, so leaving for now but several other in that bracket has emerged, Zaha, Lanzini, Arnautovic and Ramsey while back. Even restructuring to get Pogba could be worth it?

Sneaky feeling that Burnley defense will cracker soon, injuries and a small squad could be a factor here, and from the highlights i´ve seen from Brighton i noticed that Brighton got some real good chances inside the box which Burnley rarely don´t concede. Burnley defending structure is based on the principle "let them shoot" but only from angles/zones where it is almost impossible to score from, but i´ve seen some glimpses of slipping lately. In that light i´ll captain Kane, lessons not learned-)

My season has been dire but last few GWs has somehow created a new nadir.

Ward injured, team goes on for 2 CS. Morata out and then a cameo. Kola seemingly out of favour, in Wenger senile masterplan.
Choupo-Moting also dropped for last 2 games.
Brought Kiko and then had to sell him again before I even played him, so wasted two FTs.

Hazard playing well but not for FPL.

Then there's the self inflicted stuff like buying Niasse.

Oh and I sold Zaha for a hit fot Silva, wish him well though.
In fact anyone I sell usually turns to gold, Sterling another example.

Also sold Kane for Aguero who loves scoring V Spurs. But not when I own him.

Captain fails, but those are standard.

Its only a game and right now through a combination of terrible luck and poor decisions I'm in free fall.

A friend of mine sold Silva for Sterling before his strong run, then did the reverse move before this weekend...at least I haven't done anything like that.

Pogba averages 7 points a game.

He has started 8 and got attacking returns in all but two.

He is nailed (even over Christmas), racks up points and is 7.9m.

He's understandably a great transfer target.

Only issues are is he injury prone and can he keep his temper in check?

It makes sense. I think whatever Coutinho does today, I am going to go for that move.

if anybody wants an illustration of the typical premier league delicate flower who will flop to the ground in any circumstance (even when dribbling out of his own box with the ball )-look no further than Holebas on Huddersfield's third goal yesterday. that is some shameful sh *t.

morata is clearly playing through an injury but conte want to make a point that his squad is threadbare so is playing him.
