Scout Notes – Salah Strikes in Reds Romp

Liverpool breeze past Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, with Mohamed Salah among the goals once again. Though it is Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino who outstrip the Egyptian, as both deliver double-digit hauls in a 4-0 victory.

Selected as the top captain choice in a Gameweek for the first time this season, Mohamed Salah justified that backing.

Afforded the armband by 20.9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, Salah scored his fourteenth league goal of 2017/18, returning eight points.

Atoning for a rare blank in the previous Gameweek against West Brom, Salah has now produced returns in nine of Liverpool’s last ten league outings ahead of a trip to Arsenal on Friday evening.

It’s testament to how crucial he is to the Merseysiders right now that his manager was keen to give the winger a breather, replacing Salah on 70 minutes with the Reds already up by four goals and cruising at that point.

Encouragingly for their Fantasy backers, Liverpool are the only top five side without a midweek Carabao Cup fixture, ensuring they’ll be further refreshed by the time they face the Gunners.

With back-to-back home encounters against Swansea and Leicester then to follow, Salah – and Liverpool – have the platform to go on delivering.

Brazilians bag double-digits

While Salah extended his lead over the chasing FPL pack to over 20 points, he was overshadowed by team-mates Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino in the Vitality Stadium stroll.

Both the Brazilians delivered a goal and assist apiece to claim 13 and 12 points respectively.

Stationed on the left of the front three as Sadio Mane dropped to the bench, Coutinho fired seven shots on goal, matching Salah’s four efforts inside the box.

Incredibly, he has now played five away matches this season and produced 10+ points on four occasions.

Next up, he visits Arsenal side that he scored twice against in a 4-3 win in the corresponding fixture last season.

Second only to Salah in terms of points per match (ppm) by 7.3 to 7.5 among all regular players, he’s shaping up as a very strong festive differential with an ownership of just 11%.

Despite a slow start to the season, Firmino now racked up four goals and two assists in his last four starts across all competitions.

As a result, he’s climbed to fifth in the FPL forward standings on 82 points – just four points behind premium priced pair Alvaro Morata and Sergio Aguero.

The Reds’ frontman was dumped by over 79,000 FPL owners ahead of Gameweek 18 after failing to deliver against the Baggies in midweek.

But that trend is now being reversed – Firmino is the third most bought player over the last 24-hours as many look to Jurgen Klopp’s attack to take advantage of their favourable upcoming fixtures.

Despite this, the threat of rotation over the festive period should not be overlooked. The Gameweek 20 fixture with Swansea City at Anfield will be identified as a hot-spot for returns for both Brazilians. However, arriving four days before another home fixture with Leicester City and four days after the Arsenal test, we should expect Jurgen Klopp to shuffle his pack for the Swans clash in particular.

Then in Gameweek 22, Liverpool will go to Burnley four days before a Merseyside derby FA Cup clash with Everton. While Liverpool could field a weakened XI, there will be pressure on Klopp to preserve some star men – unlike many other Premier League sides who will doubtless turn to the second string for their third round ties.

Reds resilience on the rise

The 4-0 win over Eddie Howe’s side helped Liverpool claim back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since Gameweek 3.

Promisingly for Klopp, his side are now keeping out opponents on the road, too – after conceding 16 times in their first six away matches, they have allowed just one goal in the subsequent three.

Indeed, since their chastening 4-1 loss at Spurs in Gameweek 9, Klopp’s side have shipped just four goals in nine league matches – only Burnley (three) can boast a stronger record.

Installed to the Reds’ back-four in Gameweek 15 as a result of Alberto Moreno’s recent injury, Andrew Robertson supplied the assist for Coutinho’s opener to return nine points yesterday.

Looking at the statistics, the Scot’s performances will have given his manager food for thought once Moreno returns to contention.

Over the last four Gameweeks, Robertson is ranked second top for Liverpool when it comes to clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), with 20, winning all five of his tackles. Both are crucial statistics in the Bonus Points System.

Going forward, only Salah and Coutinho have had more touches in the final third during that period, while Robertson sits second for attempted crosses (14).

Injuries adding up for Howe

After yesterday’s home hammering, the Cherries now have a weekend trip to Manchester City on their agenda next.

Eddie Howe has injury concerns at both ends of the pitch after two of his key first-team regulars were forced off against the Reds.

“We don’t know the situation with either player, it’s a huge worry though regarding Charlie Daniels and Joshua King. It was a hamstring injury with King and a groin injury for Daniels so we’re not sure at the moment. Callum Wilson had an injection in his knee for a really minute problem. It’s nothing serious”.

Owned by 11% of FPL managers, Daniels is Bournemouth’s most popular player heading into the festive matches.

Over 20,000 owners have already parted company with the left-back, though – if fit – he could still profit from the schedule after the Etihad clash has passed.

Bournemouth will then host West Ham and Everton before travelling to Brighton on New Year’s Day.

Dunk 8 pointer for Kola, which is´nt much considering Arsenal got cs as well. Lead to another problem to solve, Kola, and i did, i hate it when i pick a player which is kind of differential (i know his ownershp is high or, but less owned than Ota and Ward amongst people still playing) and for a reason only Wenger knows about he is playing Maitland Niles as left back... if he could just continue to do that when they play Liverpool, holy god salah will do fine vs Maitland Niles...

    @Jonty
Revisiting your idea of ditching Kane, it seems your only fear going without Kane is the DGW where he can hurt if you don't have him. The way you put it is that Kane now has only 1 potentially good game in the next 3 before the DGW so he is ditchable for now. However, most people don't want to spread the funds from ditching Kane to avoid multiple hits to get him back especially that we will want to load up on more Spurs and Westham players.

I think the key question we need to ask ourselves, do we really want or need Kane at all apart from DGW 22? Looking at the ticker, Kane doesn't have 1 potentially good game in 3. Actually, it is just two potentially good fixtures in the next 9! Based on current form, Big Sam's Everton should no longer remain as a blue fixture on the ticker. Even the two Southampton games are not that easy given how well they fared against the top sides. And we wouldn't captain Kane in those 2 GWs anyway (Chelsea,Liverpool and City have plum fixtures in both GWs). So basically Kane has a great DGW in a sea of red and non captainable fixtures.

I have reached the conclusion that the free hit chip is the answer to our problem. It is the perfect fit for DGW 22 because of the following:

    1) You can ditch Kane and spread the funds to have a very strong midfield and defense (Utd double up on the cards). Then use the chip to load up on Spurs and Westham players without taking hits or wasting transfers on players you probably don't want apart from the DGW.

    2) You can also load up on players from teams that have good fixtures. If you look at GW22, most big teams have difficult fixtures. Arsenal vs Chelsea, Everton vs Utd, Burnley vs Liverpool. These fixtures make up easily 8 or more players for most people especially in the FFS community. On the other hand, City, Spurs, Westham and Leicester have great fixtures. We can load up heavily on these teams and have our original team back after the GW.

I don't think we will get a better opportunity to play the chip again. One big team has a great DGW, many top teams have a bad fixture among a sea of blue fixtures and some top teams have a very good fixture. Seems a perfect fit for me. I'd take that over playing it in a blank GW where most top sides don't play and I'd have to load up on the likes of Stoke,Swansea,Palace etc to field a starting 11 that will probably give me a string of 2s instead of zeros.

The only potential downside for this plan in the eyes of some is that you cannot TC Kane if you play Free hit. For me, there is no way I can trust Kane with TC this season based on Spurs dire form. I'd rather wait for a DGW that has City or Chelsea or even Utd. If Spurs and Kane were to somehow return to their best form soon, I am sure buying Kane back won't be a big issue. All it needs is 2FTs to upgrade Lukaku/Morata (most teams have one of them) and downgrade a premium defender like Alonso/Azpi (most teams have one of them) to a budget one.

Long read for some but I hope it helps. I hope this gets discussed tonight on the scoutcast 😉

Good post. Swansea away is perfect for Kane and Spurs, even with their form. They lost and then battered Stoke 5-1. I can see this happening with Swansea and he loves scoring against London teams, ie. West Ham in this case. I think it is a cast iron opportunity for TC. I would ditch him if not for the DGW, as I don't have the FH anymore. It's a pain in the arse.

Nope, Hazard captain saved me back when they played Bournemouth. Elsewhere I got in most of the top players with form and fixture only for them to blank. Bad beat but that's fantasy for you. My original team would have done great - it was Kola out on the FH when he got I think 14 points.

It could be but I think many of us have a premium defender or 2 and there are many good budget defenders if we want to shift the money away from defense. I think easily with 2FTs and a hit (mini WC as Mark likes to call it), you can get Kane back in most cases.

I get your argument, but there’s just something about having a team of 0’s in the blank gameweek that’s horrible and the free hit saves you from this. Also I have faith in Harry Kane and do want to TC him. I think it’s still safer to save it for a blank week, but you’ve put a strong case for the rewards outweighing the risks in gw 22.

One other thing about keeping Kane for the DGW is that you are Kaneless the week before. I don't think people are factoring this in so much. RLC off the bench for Kane doesn't inspire the most confidence.

This is a very good point as well. I also didn't factor in champions league games coming in in February either because I assumed all the top teams will rotate more or less. But with Spurs, I think they will prioritize the CL more than Liverpool, Utd or City who got easy draws.

With blank fixtures, they are usually announced early anyway. You can still plan for it to have 8 or 9 players. Fielding 11 from small teams is usually overrated and rarely rewards with big returns.

I tried that last time. Good luck with injuries. That also affects your way of playing.
You have several blank gameweeks and several double.
You can prepare for dgw22 pretty much o the same basis. Kane Triple City, double WHU, Eriksen?
I already have half of that bunch. 3 transfers to go. One hit taken or max two.

I'll be saving my Free Hit Chip for GW35, which clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Six matches had to be rearranged from the equivalent game-week to a different game-week last season, and many of the top players didn't have a match at all that game-week, which is a far bigger problem than just being one match short and a few other players having fairly difficult fixtures.

If you try to plan for that in advance having already used your Free Hit chip then your squad will be considerably weakened for a number of game-weeks before and after, not just one. Or if you ignore it and just write it off then your team is likely to be extremely short-staffed that game-week.

All being well, I can get 2 Spurs and 2 West Ham players for DGW22 without taking any hits, will only need to bench 2 of them in GW21, and will be able to Triple Captain one of them in GW22 if I wish to. It only takes one free transfer to remove Harry Kane afterwards, and another to upgrade elsewhere.

You may strike lucky by playing your Free Hit Chip in a different game-week, but the odds will not be in your favour.

GW31 clashes with the quarter finals. GW35 is for the semi finals, so a maximum of 4 postponed fixtures is possible.

Looking at the fixtures of GW31 and GW35, you can see that there's a high risk of many postponed fixtures as none of the top 6 teams face each other.

The issue with what you are saying is that you won't sell Kane and spread the money until the DGW because you know you want him back in for the DGW.

Also if you are looking to playing the FH chip when most big teams are blanking, you will be loading your team with average players that have no upside. I remember that being the case with GW 33 last year (or the year before) where we loaded up on Everton, Palace, Stoke and Bournemouth if I remember correctly. It didn't work out well. I just don't feel it is worth it playing a chip when all the big teams are blanking and you are replacing zeros with 1s and 2s.

The main point of playing the Free Hit chip in GW31 is that the players I bring in for that game-week will be in for one game-week only, so they won't contaminate other game-weeks as they did last season when that chip was not available.

Some of them may be little better than average, but they will definitely outscore the zeroes from the missing players they replace, which is not always the case when the chip is played in other game-weeks and the replaced players still get some points.

Anyway, there are plenty of other game-weeks when leading teams have difficult fixtures, so GW22 is not that different in that respect.

Also, keeping Kane till GW22 is not a disaster. He is still the top-scoring forward and plays every game (apart from GW21), and there are not many good alternatives.

I can decide after GW22 whether I want to keep him or to downgrade him and spread the money.

And there is no hurry to get rid of the West Ham players after GW22 either, since they have hit good defensive form recently and have good fixtures afterwards.

The rotation could be horrible on this GW, only Southampton/Swamsea/Watford/Arsenal/Chelsea will have more than 48 hours between matches so there'll likely be changes through most teams, I just wouldn't be confident of blowing my free hit chip.

Depending on cup runs we could potentially have 3 future DGW's so I'd rather hold for one of them if possible.

That is actually a good point with rotation. On the other hand, rotation could be there for the later DGWs also because of CL matches.

I agree it looks a great time to play free hit, but would it be better to use it on a FA Cup Quarter Final weekend when a lot of the top teams could be blanking like last season?

I currently have both Kane and Hazard, like many other managers here.

I think that altering between the pairs Hazard + Morata (GW21) > Kane + Eriksen (GW22) and then back if required, can be done very easily if you save a free transfer and fine with switching back gradually.

Am I missing something that's causing people to overlook this option?

My dilemma is actually whether to switch Kane for Morata this week or next one, knowing I will want him back for the DGW

Excellent post and some great points raised. It is a great time to play the free hit. I think though that you are only looking at it from a kane and spurs point of view, when west ham also need to be considered. They actually have a great run of fixtures both before, after, and including the DGW and have shown some form of late. Consequently getting them in now could be a smart early play, and benching them in gw21 isn't so painful as they tend to be cheaper than the spurs assets. Getting in lloris or Adrian is an intelligent early investment too, as benching them in gw21 doesn't use up an outfield bench slot.

The problem with this imo is what Jay mentioned on the scoutcast yesterday. There will already be lots of rotation so do you really want to have 2-3 players on your bench who don't even play. You could be risking to field 7-8 players.

I think if one of them is Lloris or Adrian, and you have another playing goalkeeper, then that is very low risk. And then if you have just one non playing outfield player (assume for most it will be Kane), then again, you would be very unfortunate to have only 9 or less of your remaining "playing" outfield players play.

I agree with you that committing to having 2-3 outfield players with no fixture is laden with risk though. Of course it also depends on how strong and confident you are in your "core" players in GW21!

I was thinking the same thing..Seasons before this we still manage to past the hurdle of reduced GW...We can still manage to load up our teams that are not playing in a FA Cup QF basically mid table players and we can use our second wildcard of the season to get rid of them and plan for the major double GWs..

I am bemused why some think Kane is out of form.

I wouldn't advise playing the free hit chip in a gameweek where only two teams have a double. There will be plenty of more profitable dgws later on in the season...as we have seen in previous years.

I wouldn’t be too hasty in going 1 up front.
It only takes Kane, Morata, Lukaku etc to get a haul and you will have to overhaul you team again.
The time to go 5 in midfield and 1 up front was over a month and a half ago....

    Daniels ---> Masuaku for -4 ?

I'm very short with defense this week. Mee vs Tottenham and Monreal vs Liverpool. Only Smalling has a good match.

    With this difference in money (0.4 + 1.7 ITB), I can: Courtois&Mbemba --> Alonso&Foster (also for -4).

Maybe it's a lot -8 in 2 gameweeks but then I would have 5 players in defense for the rotation. Alonso, Monreal, Smalling, Mee and Masuaku.

downgraded to Robertson, which atm is´nt much of a downgrade. Moreno reports are not clear so could be i´m taking a risk, but as long as he plays Swansea and Leicester i would be more than happy. Initial reports said 6weeks so anything above 4 will be great. Liverpool gets less credit for their defense than their record of cs telling us, as many as City and one less than Chelsea, two less than Arsenal and to a price which is significantly cheaper.

Well after the last two weeks, I can safely say that people write off hits too easily. I took a -12 last week, scored 36(-12), knocked out of the cup and plummeted in rank. This week I have 70 points and still have Fabianski, Kenny and DCL left to play and my team is in such a better shape now than it previously was.
