The penultimate match of Gameweek 20 gets underway at this evening as Newcastle United welcome league leaders Manchester City to St James’ Park.

Up against a defence with just a single clean sheet in 15 attempts, Pep Guardiola’s side boast three of the top ten captains for this round of fixtures.

Significantly Sergio Aguero – their most backed armband pick (6.2%) – is again chosen to lead the line and makes his fourth successive Premier League start. Gabriel Jesus warms the bench yet again, then.

Kevin De Bruyne (4.2%) and Raheem Sterling (3.1%) are also handed starts, though both have some way to go to match Harry Kane’s 17-point haul at home to Southampton yesterday.

Nonetheless, the pair arrive on Tyneside in fine form. De Bruyne has three goals and two assists in City’s previous six, with three sets of 10+ points hauls during that run.

Meanwhile, Sterling – the top target in midfield for Gameweek 20, with over 173,00 new owners – has served up 34 points in three, courtesy of three goals and a trio of assists.

David Silva’s ongoing personal issues means he misses out for the second time in three matches, however, with Ilkay Gundogan partnering De Bruyne in the centre of the park in his absence. Leroy Sane is also on the timber despite his early withdrawal against Bournemouth last time out – he’s now started just four of the last seven Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thought I'd write about this as there are quite some people on here who doesn't fully understand the concept

    What is Effective Ownership?
It's just the Total ownership of a player taking into account the captaincy given to him.

    EO % = Ownership% + Captained%

Basically if a player is owned by 50% and then further captained by 30%, then he has an EO of 80%
How this comes is : 20% of the people who didn't captain him + 30% (x2) who captained him [x2 as captaining works like you having two of that player]
    So 20 + 30x2 = 80%
    Or simply 50 + 30 = 80%

So a guy with 100% EO could be one owned by 100% and captained by none or even owned by 50% & captained by all of that 50%
In each case the average goes up by 1 point for every point he gets.

Eg : Salah having 160% EO in the Top 10k would mean that the Top10K average goes up by 1.6 ppints for every point he gets

Sorry for the long post but hope that's cleared

Thanks for the useful post. I think it will decrease the number of people celebrating Salah goals/assists.

We will probably have three of these player (EO>%100) after GW22: Kane, Salah and Sterling. This means that even if you captain one of them, you should expect other two not to score which is not a nice feeling in this game. For me, it is also a nice definition of so called "essential" status: EO>%100

Effective Ownership is one of the many reasons I favour Salah for the armband this week. Not only do I think he'll get attacking returns but with his huge ownership (especially among the top 10K) and likely huge captaincy, simply owning him is not enough.

According to FPL Discovery Salah has a 96.9% ownership among the top 10K and was captained by 35% in GWK 20. Take Kane out of the running and I expect Salah's captaincy to be at least 50% among this group in GWK 21.

But if Hazard scores more and you captain him it will still get you more points according to my own algorithm =)

It’s true. Captaining Salah means you simply match others and rely on your differentials to gain places. But amongst the top 10k teams are similar so the differential is the captain choice IMHO.

Hmm, I was on hazard but you've got me thinking now.
I was going for the differential and I feel like Salah is more in danger of rotation

Jonty's link and this post is just what now clears my mind as to why I cannot progress. I play 3-5-2 and except Gomez and Pogba the rest of my squad exists in the top 7 players of each area, as selected by the top 10k.

My rank is 41k and no matter what, I can't progress up. For weeks I have lingred between 25k and 50k. As a matter of fact, I now see that I will never make it to the top 10k with my team. What is the point of having Salah, Coutinho, Sterling, Hazard, Kane, Calvert-Lewin, Otamendi and Kenny if everyone else has them?

I need to sacrifice some of them. The correct ones. Tough.

It’s about balancing matching the top 10k and ensuring you have diffs. Like you I hoped pogba would be my key diff. Hazard too. Sadly hasn’t worked out.

Good dgwk planning though should see a significant rise. Lots in top 10k will make mistakes then.

I see your point as those are the ones owned by the majority. It is a fair point, to take 50% as a benchmark.

If a player has an EO (either for the top 10k or overall or amongst your mini-league rivals)greater than 100% and you own him but do not captain him then for every point he scores you will lose out compared with the average player in the top 10k or overall or amongst your mini-league rivals.

But if he makes a good score it is still better to own but not captain him than not to own him at all.

And if you captain a different player who outscores the player with high EO then you will gain compared to those who captained the high EO player.

It is always best to captain the player who scores the most points, irrespective of his EO.

You are more likely to maintain your current rank if you captain the player with the highest EO - but you have a better chance of either gaining or losing ground if you captain a different player.

Thanks for writing this, Redlightning. It saves me the bother of a long post I was about to make. The points you made are almost exactly what I was about to say.

There was some somewhat heated discussion during the recent Friday Arsenal-Liverpool 3-3 match about Salah, his EO and the captaincy that I wanted to give my thoughts on.

Salah was on his way to a nice 10 point haul with an EO of 114%. Salah owners, but non-captainers, like myself were celebrating each of his assists but were being told to calm down / shut up as we were losing rank with each point he scored. The counterpoint was made that we still had our captains to come (mostly Sterling), and that it was still better to own Salah but not captain him than not to own him at all, but some people were having none of it, saying it was irrelevant who we'd captained - we had nothing to gain from him scoring and were cheering our rank going down.

I wanted to question this logic at the time, but the pages were flying, as they have a habit of doing during matches, so my query would've been lost. My thinking at the time was that if my captain, Sterling, outscored Salah later that GW then balance would be restored. And that he wouldn't necessarily even need 10+ points to outdo Salah. Salah got 10 points at 114% EO, and if Sterling got 8 points at 146% EO then that would be enough to shade the Salah-cappers. (Please note that the 146% figure isn't accurate - I don't know Sterling's EO for GW19 - it was just a guesstimate).

As it turned out, Sterling got 13 points that GW, Aguero got 16 & Kane got 17, so I'm guessing not captaining Salah worked out for many and his 10x1 points were a nice bonus. I can see how you mightn't want a high 100%+ EO player to haul if you didn't captain him and you've already had a captain fail earlier that GW, but there's little point in wishing one of your owned players to fail in the early kick-off when you've got the promise of a captain haul in a later match.

Anyway, if any mods have made it this far (and I haven't exceeded a post's word count and you can actually read this), I nominate Redlightning's post above for a "hulk within a hulk", as I feel he's made some excellent points in addition to Chelseaguy's hot topic.

Thanks for this really nicely explained.
Either way you look at it you still get more points captaining the highest scorer in your team each week regardless.

    For DGW and after it:
    Daniels Hazard to

    A) Christensen Son
    B) Kenny Eriksen/Alli

    *Have Alonso

Would like A but can Son become nailed as Eriksen... and maybe its better to spread the risk in defence?

Had a nice round (90 pts) and in the top 10k but Having bit of a trouble for next round. Current team:

    Pope
    Mee Alonso Otamendi Dunk
    Sterling Hazard KdB Salah
    Depoitre DCL

    Subs: Elliot RLC Mariappa Kane

    Which option:
    A. Haz/KdB to Coutinho
    B. Haz/Kdb and Depoitre to Lingard (or 6,8m mid) and Firmino
    C. Save transfer and use 2 next week to bring in dgw players
    D. Something else

    Thanks.

    Have 2FT. Would you do:

    A) GW21: DDG > Lloris, play Speroni (MCI)
    GW22: Haz + Richarlison > Eriksen + Arnie
    All for free

    B) GW21: Play DDG (SOU), waste a FT
    GW22: Haz + Richarlison + Speroni > Eriksen + Arnie + Lloris for -4

I guess it boils down to who do you think will get more points, DDG (SOU), or Speroni (MCI) +4

    Krul(Pope)
    Alonso-Otamendi-Christiansen-Gomez(Ogbonna)
    Hazard-Salah-Sterling - Coutinho-Lingard
    Kun(DCL-Okazaki)

    A) Save Transfer
    B) suggestions?

    Transfers before GW22:
    Out: Kun, Hazard, Pope
    In: Kan (TC), Eriksen, Lloris
    (-4)

    Yes or no?

Any one know what is happening to West ham's defence? I bought Ogbonna and he has let in 6 goals in two games, I'm now thinking of bringing in Adrian but worried he will be tested and Hart given another chance

    1. Jet5605
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 18 days ago

Not sure it's all down to Ogbonna. They have defensive mid issues and Collins who is past his best has also been playing.

      1. fusen
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 18 days ago

Yeah, I'm not actually blaming him, just saying he (the team he plays for) has let in 6 goals in two games which is a bit of a worry

I did that move already this week. Alonso is essential and Christ missed the last game with illness and may not return

It's possible but given his form I'd be surprised. They're not playing in the same position. If Christ comes back it'll be for Cahill or Rud

I'm getting Alonso but it means that I need to drop Coutinho so it's a tough decision.. Alonso seems very essential imo

How much hits are you willing to take for the DGW? Seems just so stupid to get alot of DGW players if you want to get rid after that game..
What if Sterling outscores for exemple Alli and Arnau surely you don't want to keep those two for the next week?

Imo one extra game looks like a really short term move but I could be very wrong.

    1. DJ1000
      • 10 Years

I am going minus 4 with Adrian vertonghen Arno alli and Kane in. Will still have salah and sterling but richarlison and hazard will make way.

If you already have Kane then I think only one Spurs mid (I prefer Alli or Son) is enough.
