Arsenal began the post-Sanchez era by bouncing back against champions Chelsea to book their Carabao Cup Final place against Man City.

The side has certainly been quick to move on from the departure of their star man, securing a February 25 date with City at Wembley despite conceding an early goal last night when Eden Hazard converted Pedro’s through ball.

Nacho Monreal continued his new-found attacking threat by seeing his effort from a corner bounce in off the unfortunate Antonio Rudiger to level the score before Granit Xhaka poked home the winner when he steered in Alexandre Lacazette’s deflected pass after the break.

Arsenal then held on comfortably enough as a Chelsea team who lost the in-form Willian to a hamstring injury with just 30 minutes on the clock struggled for attacking cohesion.

The victory means that the Gunners and Man City will play each other twice in the space of five days, following up their cup final clash with a league fixture at the Emirates on Thursday, March 1, which will remain part of the Gameweek 28 schedule.

That is subject to change should Pep Guardiola’s side be taken to a FA Cup fifth round replay which, in turn, requires them to win this Sunday’s fourth round tie away at Cardiff City.

There are no such complications for Arsenal, who were knocked out in the third round, and the Carabao Cup now represents their best hope of silverware this season.

But any threat of rotation ahead of the February final looks remote as they will face Spurs in Gameweek 27 a full 15 days before the first match of their Man City double-header.

Instead, coach Arsene Wenger must decide how to deploy his resources in Europe, with the Gunners in action on successive Thursday nights in the Round of 32 of the Europa League before the Cup date with City.

As a result, Arsenal will play four times in ten days from February 22 onwards – Östersunds FK at home, Man City in the cup and then the league and, finally, away at Brighton on the Sunday of Gameweek 29.

Once again, the Gunners’ manager started with a 4-1-2-3 formation but it was his switch to a wing-back set-up after the break that helped the hosts garner momentum.

Having recovered from the hamstring problem that forced him off against Crystal Palace last weekend, Monreal continues to catch the eye.

The Spaniard scored an extraordinary 16 points from just 33 minutes of action against the Eagles, thanks to a goal and two assists. Returning to play the full 90 minutes last night, he’s the third most popular transfer target in FPL over the last 24 hours, acquired by 7,600 new owners.

New signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan was cup-tied last night, while fellow midfielder Aaron Ramsey recovered from illness to take his place on the bench. The Welshman, along with Sead Kolasinac was afforded just six minutes off the bench as the Gunners shut down the tie late on.

With the Sanchez situation now put to bed, back-to-back wins will have boosted the confidence ahead of clashes with Swansea City and Everton, though the subsequent two league fixtures – against Spurs and Man City – means many may steer clear until the schedule turns far kinder in Gameweek 29.

Chelsea, meanwhile, started brightly but tailed off last night, which also adequately describes their season to date.

Deployed as a “false nine”, Hazard confirmed his recent return to form with a third goal in two starts, but Alvaro Morata again missed out with a back injury, and the loss of Willian further reduced their attacking threat.

His replacement, new signing Ross Barkley, failed to make any real impact, while a defence bolstered by the return of Andreas Christensen from a head injury failed to keep a fourth clean sheet in five matches in all competitions.

The Blues’ immediate schedule (BOU wat WBA) suggests shut-outs could well be straight back on the agenda, but the 12.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in their teams might not be able to take advantage as the Belgian missed a second successive match with an ankle injury.

The hamstring problem for Willian is another concern, particularly as close to 100,000 managers have made him FPL’s second most popular Gameweek 25 purchase on the back of a 12-point display against Brighton last weekend.

Speaking post-match, Chelsea coach Antonio Conte played down the extent of Willian’s problem.

“I just spoke to the player. He said he felt a problem in his hamstring but he doesn’t think it will be a serious injury. I hope this feeling is right.”

Willian’s 9% FPL ownership will hope so, too.

Should he face a spell on the sidelines, Pedro could be called upon in a 3-4-3 against Bournemouth in Gameweek 25, though much will depend on Morata’s availability. With Chelsea facing Newcastle United in the FA Cup, we should gain further indication as to his approach for Wednesday from Sunday’s line-up.

    7. Assessing Stoke's Midfield Options

There’s plenty of buzz around Xherdan Shaqiri on here now, and with the new manager effect possibly kicking in, and some strong upcoming fixtures (WAT/bou/BHA), you can see why we might look to Stoke for a midfield differential.

Stoke played a 4-2-3-1 in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield for their first game under Lambert, with Shaqiri on the right, Choupo-Moting on the left, and Allen in the number ten role behind Diouf. Having started the season with a back three, the only other time Stoke have played Shaqiri, Choupo-Moting and Allen as the attacking midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 was in GW19 and GW20, where Crouch played up front in a 3-1 win against West Brom and a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.

Surprisingly, in those matches, Joe Allen was the top scoring Stoke player, with 2 goals, 2 assists, 6 bonus and 29 points (9.7 PPG), having played as a deep-lying midfielder for the rest of the season so far. By comparison, Xherdan Shaqiri managed a single assist and 10 points over those 3 games (3.3 PPG), and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting picked up an impressive 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus for 21 points (7.0 PPG).

I’m not saying Shaqiri and Choupo-Moting aren’t good picks, but I think Joe Allen deserves a little more attention than he’s getting at 5.1m (i.e. none). Those three games are the only matches he’s played as an attacking midfielder this season, but he had a period where he emerged as a surprise fantasy bargain at Stoke in 16/17, coinciding with a spell in the same position.

Of course, this is completely dependent on Lambert continuing to pick Allen in this advanced role, but here’s a comparison to illustrate the difference this attacking switch has made to his output, according to position information on transfermarkt.co.uk, and shots, key passes, expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) data from understat.com. Statistics ‘per game’ are shown in brackets:

      2017/18:
      Allen starting as AM – 3 games, 2 goals (0.67), 2 assists (0.67), 6 bonus (2.00), 29 points (9.7 PPG), 3 shots (1.00), 5 key passes (1.67), 0.68 xG (0.23), 0.81 xA (0.27) and 44 baseline BPS (14.67)

      Allen starting as CM or DM – 19 games, 0 goals (0.00), 2 assists (0.11), 4 bonus (0.21), 45 points (2.4 PPG), 16 shots (0.84), 17 key passes (0.89), 1.04 xG (0.05), 0.92 xA (0.05) and 245 baseline BPS (12.89)

      2016/17:
      Allen starting as AM – 15 games, 6 goals (0.40), 3 assists (0.20), 10 bonus (0.67), 83 points (5.5 PPG), 28 shots (1.87), 17 key passes (1.13), 4.96 xG (0.33), 2.65 xA (0.18) and 181 baseline BPS (12.07)

      Allen starting as CM or DM – 19 games, 0 goals (0.00), 0 assists (0.00), 0 bonus (0.00), 33 points (1.7 PPG), 12 shots (0.63), 11 key passes (0.58), 0.55 xG (0.03), 2.00 xA (0.11) and 248 baseline BPS (13.05)

      Overall:
      Allen starting as AM – 18 games, 8 goals (0.44), 5 assists (0.28), 16 bonus (0.89), 112 points (6.2 PPG), 31 shots (1.72), 22 key passes (1.22), 5.64 xG (0.31), 3.46 xA (0.19) and 225 baseline BPS (12.50)

      Allen starting as CM or DM – 38 games, 0 goals (0.00), 2 assists (0.05), 4 bonus (0.11), 78 points (2.0 PPG), 28 shots (0.74), 28 key passes (0.74), 1.59 xG (0.04), 2.92 xA (0.08) and 493 baseline BPS (12.97)

What does this tell us? Well, not only do Allen’s goals, assists and PPG dramatically increase when he plays as the number ten, but the underlying stats back this up. He shoots more often, creates more chances, and according to his xG and xA numbers, these are chances of decent quality. It appears that he’s over-achieved a little, but that’s hardly surprising when he’s averaged over 6 points per game!

He’s also a consistent performer in the BPS, wherever he plays, and this is underlined by the fact that he’s picked up bonus in 10 of the 12 games that he’s got a goal or assist in the last two seasons. Overall, if Lambert continues to play Joe Allen in this role, I’d expect him to provide strong value over the rest of the season.

No idea - that's definitely something to watch out for. The problem is that if Lambert moves him back to a deeper role, which could happen at any time, Allen returns to fantasy irrelevance at the drop of a hat.

You may be on to something about Allen doing well when he plays in the number 10 role but a quick look at Stoke's average positions against Huddersfield (http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/919130/) tells me that Allen was not playing number 10. In fact his average position is inside his own half. 1 goal attempt and 1 chance created.

Yeah, I noticed that as well, and it's a concern. Average positions often don't bear much resemblance to how we would describe the formation, though, and can vary from game-to-game. They also don't account for differences in where a player plays both with and without the ball.

I didn't watch the full game, but Allen was listed as an AM on transfermarkt, and an AMC on whoscored. The Stoke Sentinel (local paper) also orders the midfield in their match report as Fletcher, Adam, Shaqiri, Allen, Choupo-Moting, suggesting he was meant to be one of three attacking midfielders, not three central midfielders.

That's was enough for me to go on, but it may well be the case that Allen will continue to play a deeper role under Lambert, not as a number ten. If that's the case, I don't think he's a fantasy asset that's worthy of any attention.

Have to agree. Watched Sky's 30min highlight package of the Stoke game for the second time. Allen spent much of the time as deep as Adam, only on the break and late attacking runs took him into the box. A box to box midfield performance at best, certainly not the number ten role, which he did play in for part of last season.

            1. Ludo
              • 12 Years
              7 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, I've had another look and it does seem like it was really a 1-2 midfield, with Fletcher holding, Adam to the left and Allen to the right, rather than a 2-1 with Allen at the tip.

He wasn't keeping up with Diouf, Shaqiri and Choupo-Moting in the moves that led to the goals, and was very late in arriving on the right-hand-side of the box to score the first.

Worth bearing Allen in mind if he plays that role in the near future, but I think Choupo-Moting is more than worth the 0.3m extra at the moment.

I'm really tempted to get him but my concern is that he mostly gets points in home games.

He could be great for GWs 25 and 27 but probably isn't going to do much in GWs 28-30 when I'd need him to come in for my other cheap attackers.

He is cheapest decent midfielder to definitely have a GW31 fixture, which is very useful if you are not using the free hit chip then.

Suggests Allen may or may not be a good shout dependent upon Lambert.
But also that the safest call has to be Choupo-Moting.

Don't think anyone's willing to spend 100m on him, so he'll likely stay where he is I think. He's incredibly valuable to Leicester. Whereas top clubs in need can find talent elsewhere for cheaper.

Kane hasn't left my team at any point this season. Not even in a single draft. But with his next 3 and Aguero's form, I'm strongly considering making that move. Crazy?

Constantly seeing players slating the so called casuals. I think it's a bit sad. I've done it for several seasons now and over the past few years, "season veterans" speak like they're all part of a cult.

The cultish behaviour that tells other players they must have a template team which more or less matches there's.

Surely if a "casual" is in front of you, they're there on merit more than fluke.

The divide is huge on here. Just play the game and enjoy it without being bitter towards those apparently "luckier" than you
