Burnley peg back Man City on a day of frustration for both the league leaders and an army of Fantasy managers.

The more philosophical will have shrugged off City’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor as ‘just one of those days’, but those who had stocked up on City’s attack were left surveying the Fantasy wreckage of so much expensive talent bringing in meagre returns.

Three of Gameweek 26’s most popular purchases, Sergio Aguero (89,000+), Raheem Sterling (97,000+) and Kevin De Bruyne (92,000+), toiled for precious little reward against Sean Dyche’s men, with Sterling guilty of a particularly glaring miss.

That came when City were 1-0 up and in total control of a match in which they had 20 shots to their opponents’ eight, creating a chance every 4.7 minutes as they went.

Left-back Danilo, back in the side in place of Oleksandr Zinchenko, scored the goal when he curled home a Bernardo Silva pass; reward for a strong attacking performance from the defender, who had more attempts on goal than all but one player.

Sterling was the one man to better the Brazilian’s four shots, and the key attempt of his five on the day involved missing an open goal from three yards out.

That changed the mood in the stadium, inspiring a Burnley revival which culminated in Johan Berg Gudmundsson’s equaliser from a Matthew Lowton assist.

The Icelander has only scored twice in the league this season, but both have come in the last five Gameweeks as he continues to provide notable value, at 5.0, to the select band of 44,817 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers currently enjoying his services as their fifth midfielder.

Enjoyment was a considerably rarer commodity among owners of City’s stars.

Aguero blanked for the first time in four Gameweeks to deliver just two points for the 940,000 (16.5%) who captained him. That included 39 of the top 100 FPL managers, while 28% of the 17,900 who played their Triple Captain chip used it on the Argentine.

A fixture with Leicester City follows for Aguero which, crucially, comes at home as the forward has now gone four away matches without a goal.

De Bruyne has been equally underwhelming on the road, with just a single goal and assist from his last seven away days.

Sterling might have ended the match as the scapegoat, with Pep Guardiola bringing him off soon after his miss, but he has blanked only twice in nine Gameweek starts. The other was in the loss at Liverpool.

Of more concern should be City’s increasingly brittle backline, which has kept just one clean sheet in five.

John Stones remained sidelined – this time with a knee injury sustained in training – but that didn’t mean that Aymeric Laporte’s 93,000+ new owners reaped the reward as Guardiola partnered Vincent Kompany with Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half.

But whatever the combination, City’s defensive stock is on the slide as matches with Arsenal and Chelsea draw ever nearer.

In fact, trying to guess Guardiola’s teamsheet across all positions for the Leicester City match will be a tough task as the Gameweek 27 encounter comes just three days before their Champions League Round of 16 clash with Basel.

It remains to be seen how City approach that encounter, though having dropped points at Burnley, it could now be that Guardiola abandons any thoughts of rest and rotation.

As for Burnley, it was a predictably busy day for keeper Nick Pope (8.8%). Having produced just two save points from his previous five starts, he earned two more today, making six stops – more than any other goalkeeper in the Gameweek.

That was his best tally since Gameweek 17 and helped him to a bonus point made it 16 for the season now, ranking top among keepers.

The Clarets have kept only one clean sheet in eight matches, but an injury to Phil Bardsley, who was substituted at half-time, might well put Lowton back on our radars.

The defender’s assist caught the eye, as could his 4.3 price tag in the light of Burnley’s short-term schedule (swa SOT EVE whu) and a run-in that involves only matches with Chelsea and Arsenal of any major concern.

Did the same, came back to it after over a year, it’s almost like a new game as Ubisoft have actually supported a game for once.

New operators mean tactics are so different! Very punishing game until you do get into the swing of it, I usually set low expectations and celebrate ever kill wildly!

Anyone lend a hand with this? Where my usual debaters at?

    DDG / Pope
    Ota / Smalling / Azpi / Alonso / Masuaku
    CM / Ramsey / Salah / KDB / Lingard
    Firmino / Vardy / DCL

    Ota & Masuaku > Simpson & Naughton (2FT).
    Leaves 2.0M in the bank.

Week after KDB & Vardy > Son (maybe Eriksen if I can afford) & Kane (-4)?

    1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
      8 years, 5 months ago

No reason to sell Ota this week if you’re not going to spend the cash - unless you think he won’t play of course.
This will give you the option of playing Ota + give you another week to reasses and have 2 FTs for when we know about the 31 blanks

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

I think he will play but I will start Vardy? Makes sense though.
I've plenty of time to save 2FTs for 31 blanks though?

        1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
          8 years, 5 months ago

          Yeah sure.
But as I understand it, we will
Know who has games in 31 by the 28 deadline. So no need for a irrelevant transfer before 27, when you can do it before 28 with knowledge on blanks

Just don't see the point in starting a defender when I'm hoping his opposition scores, make sense? Maybe just do Masuaku to Swans defender?

DDG Pope is waste of money. DDG should be played every week. So much on GK def and no Kane/Aguero placeholder

This. Thought the same. I would of ditched ddg earlier as pope has been good, and put that 1.5 into another player from the ddg downgrade.

Heaton must be a threat to Pope very soon.

          Funny you both say this.
28 - Man U have Chelsea, Burnley have Southampton
30 - Man U have Liverpool, Burnley have West Ham
33 - Man U have Man C, Burnley have Watford
36 - Man U have Arsenal, Burnley have Brighton

I feel they're perfect for me to rotate and I've had both Pope and DDG since GW14 so I've had them both a while.
"DDG should be played every week", Pope is one of the reason I hit 77 last week when most others flopped.

Given his form why would you bring Heaton back in? Unless Heaton gets brought back in on 28,30,33,36 I won't really lose out because as soon as Heaton comes back I can just transfer Pope out...

Heaton is first choice Burnley GK . If you spend the DDG on a Gk why have a relatively expensive back up ? Waste of money imo.Just get Heaton when back and use the DDG money elsewhere.

I can't go against what's been serving me well, enjoying having the double Man U backline right now to be honest. I would say my team is particularly week elsewhere either.

Worth noting I haven't had Kane all season.

Exact cash so would need to make the moves today:

Lingard Masuaku --> Walcott Dummet (-4)

Currently my 4th and 5th defender are Masuaku and Kenny, so basically no cover in case Otamendi/Alonso/Dunk would be benched.

Today was Fernandez first goal in 2-3 years. He is a great 4/5th bench defender option but not to be played week in and week out IMO. SWA clean sheets won't be plentiful.

Fernandez has done well for attacking returns. His PPM is on par with Mawson and even higher considering he’s missed a lot of CS. Also likes BAPs more.

My theory on defenders is this - if they are not clear attacking threats with proven pedigree of scoring or assisting a la Alonso or Baines in the past, or to a lesser extent guys who assist regularly, join the attack a la Davies or Trippier for parts of the season or Valencia, etc. than I go for the cheapest one possible in the team since the upside for me is a clean sheet - 6 pts.

Mawson scored a few last year and is a big guy so if you are counting on owning him when he grabs one of those towering headed goals, sure why not, but for me I prefer to save the money at the back unless it's a regular goalscoring defender a la Terry in the past or even Cahill at Bolton / early CHE days. Don't know enough about Mawson to add him to that category and spend the premium...

Fair enough, thanks for your thoughts, very logical. Thay said I reckon Mawson may be worth the .5 over Naughton due to goal threat so probably take a punt on him, still got wild card if all goes Pete Tong, cheers

Not long term, but I value the flexibility of saving the transfer more with injuries / CL / FA Cup results to come. In the last 4-5 weeks all my transfers have been injuries (Lukaku - concussion; Arnautovic - hamstring, Christensen - hamstring, Courtois - ankle, etc. etc.) so my perspective is to save the transfer on something more critical as long as the player is still satisfactory which in my opinion B. Silva is.

Would you rather drop Otamendi to a 4.5 to accomodate Mkhitaryan with Kane, Aguero and Firmino up top?

    or

Drop Kane/Aguero for Aubam while keeping Otamendi to accommodate Mkhitaryan?

I did get Otamendi for 5.5 after all.

    1. Ibracadabra

I'd sell Ota if you got all his goals previously already. Better value elsewhere.

But not much value for a 4.5 is the issue

I planned to drop Aguero and get Aubam/Mkhit already this week, I done it in draft but didn't the balls to do it in regular FPL. unfortunately. maybe I'm just bitter about that!

A, easy. Walcott has much better short term fixtures than Mkhi.

For A, I'd go for B given the stats tables and short term fixtures. No massive rush, though. Could even hold it a week.

okay i know this is a touchy subject, but i just cant see the logic in using the free hit chip during the BGW, especially if a week such as this occurs then......
I didnt really focus last year on FPL so didnt use the chips, but surely logically using it in the DGW gives you the biggest landing net if it goes wrong, at least your players get 4 points, a garaunteed 44 points.

plus saving any chips for GW34 onwards doesnt make sense too since thats usually when a lot of rotation kicks in.

4 points each is not guaranteed in the DGW. Players get rested. We already saw that with Spurs/Tottenham.

You're right that a Free Hit could be 'wasted' if a low-scoring week occurs, but that's really just up to chance. DGWs are further away, so there's still more time to plan. BGWs are sooner & basically, I don't want to rip up my team just to prepare for one week, but having to keep the 'meh' players long term.

I mean, I still have a Wildcard so have this luxury, but IMO Free-Chip is perfect for the blanks.
