Scout Notes – Hit And Miss From Sanchez

Manchester United and their new star man are just about convincing in a win over Huddersfield, while Bournemouth keep up the good work and the Swansea City revival rolls on.

Jose Mourinho’s attempt to harness the talents of Alexis Sanchez produced results, with the January arrival scoring in a stodgy 2-0 win.

The Chilean was once again on the left-flank, though Mourinho’s teamsheet was far from predictable elsewhere, with Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba dropping to the bench following Wednesday’s humbling defeat to Spurs.

That pair were the most purchased United players for Gameweek 26, with 97,000+ and 74,000+ new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners respectively.

They had to make do with cameos from the bench in a win secured by goals from Romelu Lukaku, who turned in Juan Mata’s superb cross, and Sanchez.

It was the Belgian striker’s second strike in four starts, though Lukaku is still failing to meet the expectations of an 11.3-priced asset.

But all eyes were on the even more pricey Sanchez (11.8) as he marked his home debut with six shots, three chances created and a first United goal.

The fact that it arrived from a penalty he missed was not exactly how his 271,000+ ownership would have liked to see things played out – particularly the 31.6% of them who had trusted Sanchez with the armband.

Sanchez produced five points which, in light of Aguero’s blank, may yet stand up as a reasonable captain return.

It was, in truth, rather apt in a wasteful display from Sanchez which saw him surrender possession 32 times – more than any other United player has managed in a single match all season.

That hampered his chances of benefiting in the Bonus Points System (BPS), with the bonus instead going to Chris Smalling (two) and Marcos Rojo (one), while visiting keeper Jonas Lossl secured the maximum thanks to his initial penalty stop and four other saves.

Sanchez’s 4.8% ownership should also have some doubts on the midfielder benefitting from further spot-kick returns. Jose Mourinho suggested post-match that he only took on duties thanks to Pogba’s generosity.

“(The penalty-taking decision) was between him and Paul. I think Paul was a nice guy to him and understood that it would be important to score, so he let him take the penalty.”

Rojo started at centre-back as Phil Jones, at 16.8% the most popular United defender, was left out of the squad.

The England international had started the previous nine Gameweeks and, while it was reported on social media prior to the match that this may have been due to illness, there was no such confirmation from Mourinho or the club. Other reports merely suggest that Jones was one of those dropped following the abject display against Spurs.

The equally popular Jesse Lingard (16.7%) did start, but blanked for the fourth successive Gameweek despite firing in four efforts on goal. That form has prompted more than 24,000 managers to make him the second most sold player for Gameweek 27, with Pogba not far behind.

Security of starts for many is now an issue, and United’s schedule involves visits from both Chelsea and Liverpool over the next four Gameweeks, so sales look like being the trend for Mourinho’s men for now.

However, with a trip to Newcastle next, there is some merit in perhaps waiting on another Mourinho teamsheet.

Wilson blanks in Bournemouth win

Bournemouth made it seven league matches unbeaten with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Stoke City.

But the Cherries’ top owned asset, Callum Wilson (9.1%), failed to live up to his pre-Gameweek billing.

The striker blanked to frustrate the 224,000+ managers who made him the second most bought asset ahead of yesterday’s deadline.

It was left to Lys Mousset and Josh King to secure the win, with Jordon Ibe registering an assist, although Bournemouth’s schedule (hud NEW lei TOT WBA wat CRY) suggests that Wilson’s ownership have plenty of opportunities to benefit from their acquisition.

A hamstring injury to Steve Cook forced coach Eddie Howe to switch from a 3-4-2-1 to a back four and could lead to a more permanent rethink of a system that has worked so well in recent weeks.

It meant that Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels operated as full-backs for much of Saturday’s match, reducing their influence in the final third.

The Cherries defence have now kept just two clean sheets at the Vitality Stadium in 13 attempts, while their Gameweek 25 shut-out at Stamford Bridge was their first in 13 Gameweeks.

Even so, Daniels remains a worthy target for the upcoming scheduled, with club skipper Simon Francis – at just 4.3 – the frugal choice in Howe’s rearguard.

As for the Potters, new boss Paul Lambert’s clean-sheet streak ended at two, but their most popular asset, Xherdan Shaqiri (7.9%), rewarded his ownership with a fine performance.

The Swiss midfielder opened the scoring – belated reward for the 145,000 managers who had swooped for him ahead of a Gameweek 25 blank – and two bonus brought in an eight-point haul which was his second-best tally of the season.

The playmaker is set to remain in squads ahead of a home fixture with Brighton, with a four-match run from Gameweek 30 – involving Man City, Arsenal and Spurs – the point where the charms of the likes of Theo Walcott and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will likely see Shaqiri make way.

Foxes deal without Mahrez to a point

Leicester City coach Claude Puel reacted to the well-publicised absence of star turn Riyad Mahrez by handing Kelechi Iheancho a first start since Gameweek 8 and a league debut to starlet Fousseni Diabaté.

But it was left to old faithful Jamie Vardy to deliver the goods with a third goal in as many Gameweeks, and his fourth in five starts.

Iheanacho provided the assist, although whether that came from a pass or just a poor piece of control was up for debate, as the Foxes started strongly against Swansea City as if desperate to prove that Mahrez’s no-show was of little consequence.

The Swans, however, are showing increasing resilience, and they fought back to draw 1-1 thanks to a first goal of the season from defender Federico Fernandez, who headed home from a Ki Sung-yueng corner.

While Alfie Mawson (5.0) is considered the most profitable option in the Swans defence, his skipper Fernandez – at 4.4 – could prove a shrewd investment ahead of a favourable schedule (BUR bha WHU hud SOT) set fair until the end of March.

There are also cheap options available in Leicester’s rearguard.

However, Ben Chilwell (4.3) was replaced at left-back by Christian Fuchs on Saturday, again casting doubt on the security of his start. Instead, it could be fellow full-back Danny Simpson (4.3) – who came back in for Daniel Amartey at right-back – who could be the more assured budget option.

The Foxes have a very encouraging stretch of fixtures once next week’s trip to Man City is done. A home tie with Arsenal in Gameweek 31 is their only encounter with a top-six side up until a trip to Spurs on the final day.

It remains to be seen how much of a factor Mahrez will be over that run-in. Manager Claude Puel appeared in the dark on the Algerian’s status when questioned post-match.

“Today, just after the game, Riyad is not my preoccupation. My preoccupation is about my available players and to keep them in a positive attitude and to continue this good work.

My only feelings are about my available players, and as for Riyad we will see later.”

Mahrez would seem unlikely to return at the Etihad Stadium next weekend, with Fantasy managers seemingly leaving nothing to chance – he’s currently the most sold player of Gamweek 27.

I will struggle to ditch him given the fixtures and nailedness...for example , I have Lingard and I am doubtful of his minutes...

Gameweek 25 Lessons Learned So Far….

Here’s a couple to get the discussion started. Feel free to comment on these as well as flag up any other lessons you’ve learned so far from the Gameweek.

    Sanchez is top dog

The canine loving Chilean looks to be top dog at Manchester United yesterday as he provided the team with some much needed courage and bravery.

Wanting to be involved constantly Pogba also handed him spot kick duties....which may or may not be a permanent arrangment.

Was Pogba's benching a clear message from Mourinho that it is Alexis not Paul that this team needs to be shaped around?

Non owners should be slightly worried, with many more goals and assists very likely for Sanchez.

But there is a catch. Sanchez’s gung-ho approach meant that he lost the ball more yesterday than any other United player in any game all season, which is bad news for bonus returns.

The jury may still be out on his value at 11.8 as well as how his inclusion affects squad balance – but for now he passed the audition admirably.

    Alexis who?

Sanchez’s former club have already moved on – with an emphatic win over Everton. This showed that the Gunners have a wealth of options to consider across attack, with Aaron Ramsey’s runs into the box, Mkhitaryan’s key passes and Aubameyang’s promise looking great.

But with Spurs and City up next, Gameweek 29 may be the best time for Arsenal assets.

Big Sam’s bus can’t get into gear?

This encounter also showed how Allardyce has his work cut out to ensure he is last on Match of the Day. His defence is a mess and interest in assets like Pickford should be treated with caution.

As we start to move away from the premium defenders, such as Christensen, Otamendi and maybe even Jones, Sanchez could become a viable option. However, I'd wait till after the Chelsea and Liverpool games to see if he's worth it as 11.7 is too much if he can't replicate last season's form.

I'm worried as a non owner. Listening to the match it was one of those where he was a constant menace. A haul is imminent for the Chilean.

But a key reason I didn't get him in this week was squad balance. With a slightly cheaper option like KDB or Hazard it frees up a vital 1-1.5m which is the difference between having or not having a decent front three. Or means having a strong backline, or Shaqiri instead of a magic bean.

I'm still keeping Sanchez on a watching brief and he's definitely coming into my side should Man U get a double.

I got hom, captained him and watched the first half. As an owner, Im upset, my shot at the best differential ever failed massively.

I really do not think non owners should be worried - sure Pogba and Martial were not playing but Utd were very very poor going fwd in the first half - could not watch the second.

Im pretty sure Sanchez will not stay in my team for long. Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan seem like better value for money and will be in my team in two or three GWs

Bournemouth, Everton and Brighton just can't keep clean sheets, which is annoying as the likes of Daniels, Duffy and Pickford look great value on paper.

Man City's failures to keep clean sheets recently is a worry too.

Although going for goal threat still has its rewarded.

Among cheap defenders mentioned on the Scoutcast was Jack Stephens who delivered.

True. Thinking of getting back in Mee for goal threat and better fixtures. Ota is now a problem though, as is Chilwell, possibly Jones too, and I have Dunk who has good fixtures but can't CS. Even Alonso has tough fixtures soon with rotation possible.

Stephens has been good recently. Has he taken Yoshida's place for good?

LIstening to the game gives you a version by someone who tries to get more listeners, who makes the story as it goes, who do not change what is said after replays, who has a subjective view on teams and players before the game starts. Whether his involvement is class or luck won't come out of listening. Watching a game yourself will give you a less chances of being mislead.

Imo he hasn't been top dog in any games since he switched. One of the top five of the games, perhaps, but never the top dog.

Big takeout for me was Man City. They’ve been sensational, but triple City is too much after the Leicester game.

Milk Cup final, at least four Champions League games, FA Cup, Arsenal (a), Chelsea (h), United (h), Spurs (a), etc.

The only game where rotation and distractions wouldn’t deter you is Brighton (h)... but that’ll soon be turned into a blank.

Think I’ll go from triple City to just KDB after Leicester.

I’d argue I’m ok with avoiding Sanchez, again United looked slow to get going and Sanchez forcing everything will get him lost bonus and more yellows

Granted there will be times when he will haul but at that price you want consistency and a captain option, I think his play style will have him winning balls deep and forcing to create something.

Happy to be proven wrong, but unless United have an outstanding Double gameweek and the budget needs spending, it’s a no from me.

I have sanchez enough to tell you this was a typical performance to the Arsenal ones he has had this season

He always looks threatening but he also makes the game all about him which in turn hurts the overall team. He may haul a few times and that's expected for his price but my personal opinion from the first 2 games I have seen is nothing has actually changed.

I am more worried about my city assets, do we now need to look at shipping aguero and otamendi? Relatively decent game v Leicester but then a number of huge matches incoming so perhaps Pep may decide to rotate for Leicester?

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, that's quite a key issue. And how much room to rotate does Pep currently have anyway?

Fortunately the R16 CL is against Basel, who aren't the most fearsome opponents, and there are then 6 days till the next game (Wigan). I think Pep will play the A team against Leicester but after that it all gets trickier to predict.

I got Kun in for GW24-27 and despite Jesus being out for longer than anticipated I think I will probably stick to that plan.

Got him in too but I disagree. Im already regretting that move, Utd were much too slow going fwd, Sanchez keeps dropping deep and tries too hard to make things happen on his own. Keeping for Newcastle, but only because Aubam has tough fixtures. Def not captaining Sanchez next week.

Be dullard when captain choices seem tough. I brought in Pogba for Son and captained him. Still hurts this morning.

I don't fear sanchez to be honest. He is not up front in a less gung-ho team having produced well below value this year so far.
Achieved nothing in the first big match and not much in the second against one of the weakest teams.
There are more sources of goals than at arsenal and if utd carry on scoring only a couple he'll score very few.
Those that have him will have sacrificed greatly elsewhere making it easier for non owners not to be affected by his returns.

I'm not remotely worried about not having Sanchez. After his shambolic penalty yesterday, he's not going to be on the. Anymore. It was clearly a situation where they were already winning and the players wanted him to get off to a good start on his debut. The money he costs can be deployed elsewhere. KDB much better value in that premium mid bracket. When CL starts he may well be rested if Mourinho thinks he's that important.

IF he gets shifted upfront maybe it's a different story. But right now, as you yourself said about Kun a couple of weeks back Jonty, maybe it's a case of remembering past glories. His stellar returns at Arsenal came when he played up front and scored and because he was the focal point. Every player looked to get the ball to him in previous seasons.

I agree. I’m not worried in the slightest about not owning Sanchez.

So many were talking up this huge haul and great differential that was incoming against Huddersfield, and he got 10 points.

He’s too expensive, he wasn’t a viable asset at Arsenal and that hasn’t changed now. He’s gone to a better but more negative team.

Whilst Mourinho continues to stick with 4321 instead of going 433 I can't see United steam rolling many teams. Our play at times is far too slow and Sanchez ain't quite on same wavelength yet (but that will change) in the summer I think United need to sign another centre mid to free up Pogba. There for I'll be avoiding Sanchez for now.

Got Sanchez in and captained him, Aguero blanking means those 10 points may turn out to be valuable.

Having doubts about doing it again though, it appealed this week as thought Burnley wouldn't be easy for City and Spurs/Liverpool too unpredictable, now the dust settled, had he not got booked or scored from the actual pen and not the follow up, it would have felt a lot better, 6 shots on goal is promising though.

Arsenal were swashbuckling again, team looked so good in the first half, the options can wait though, need Leicester to lose to Sheff UTD to bring them into play now.

Everton were awful but Walcott had two good moments, one when he was clean through (when Mustafi put in a good block) and a cross for Niasse who hurt Cech in the process, he should have scored that, Theo is a threat & has the fixtures to support the feeling, will be key leading up to GW31.

Other than that, probably wise not to chase last week's points as Wilson showed, Ramsey & Mkhi can wait, Aubameyang can also wait but is now a priority, could have had a hatrick yesterday so there's big points coming for him.

that it's all about fine margins.
Sterling puts away that sitter yesterday - load of people get points and City probably go on to win 3/4-nil.
Same as last week Sterling assist for Kun goal in dying minutes turn around a lot of GWs.
Sanchez just trying too hard to make an impression yesterday.
Home debut, massive club, massive wages etc
Throwing himself into tackles, rushing passes etc. Settles down over next couple of weeks and things should improve.
People should probably buy Shaqiri as he is going on a run like King last year because I won't buy him. a player I just don't like /get so he'll probably end up punishing me.

Also im not worried as a non-sanchez owner...
his price is too high to be worth it even if he does gets hauls now & again!
Theres mids 2-5 mil cheaper than can also get hauls plus with salah, firm sterling, kun who will become kane again after leicester i have plenty of captain options

That Arsenal may be better off without Sanchez, and that Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang and Ramsey may now be good prospects.

That Phil Jones is not always a reliable source of United's clean sheet points.

And that buying Mahrez shortly before the transfer deadline for a hit was a terrible mistake, and I am still suffering from the consequences.

Take it as an opportunity. Yes to Man Utd options. Good chance to stock up before their fixtures turn. KDB too. Also good chance to look at the bench and make sure you have good options that week - as I suspect with CL coming up there will be some team sheet surprises.

Just concerned about the defence as there don’t appear to be any stand out options. Would love to double on Chelsea, but don’t feel I can trust them.

I will ensure I have a full 15, but surely the big guns in midfield won’t be rotated? I’d be most worried about premium defensive resting. Jones this week...Azpi and Alonso next week? Again comes back to the defence being very tricky to navigate.

I'm not sure if that's wise. You're going very cheap at the back.

Prioritise a decent defense now, whilst Arsenal have tricky fixtures. Once you've sorted that, it'll be a better time to invest in Arsenal attack (or another Lingard replacement, for example.)

                Wait for news on Stones.

          Sold, but hardly heavily.

He’s the 22nd most sold player, still 79% to rise, only falling 0.30% per hour.

          Probably mostly the wildcarders?

Aguero is being heavily sold. With Leicester home next.

Could be rested with CL the following midweek.

No chance of Agüero getting rested. A week of rest now, and who would replace him? City have no other striker option, except from Sterling which hasn't been a great success in that position so far (a couple of cup-matches)

B.Silva or Sterling 'false 9' wouldn't be the greatest surprise ever, although I do think Aguero will play

could potentially be a week early, but in my case I'd be getting Firmino & Walcott and would rather captain Hazard or Salah

I'd be careful with Firm, he's also a key player and might have his mins managed around UCL.

I will sell after leicester but can see the appeal in selling now, vardy and firmino with good fixtures and mikhi, walcott, sanchez is being drafted. Money needs to come from somewhere

It wasn't a debut, but I'll always love Stevie G getting subbed on and red-carded immediately.

        Foster
        Otamendi - Jones - Ogbonna
        Salah - Sterling - Shaqiri - Lingard
        Kane - Agüero - Firmino

        Bench: Elliot, Carroll, Mee, Hegazi.

        1FT and 0.1M ITB.

Goalie not optimal, but no room for upgrading.. Save FT (if no injuries/suspensions) surely the correct move?

How significant did people find Pogba's benching? I got him in this week for a fixture I thought had very good potential for a haul. Difficult to remain patient with the likes of KDB available through for instance an Otamendi downgrade. Any advice?

Not significant. After the poor display v Spurs, it's a lesson to the players that he doesn't have favourites. Don't expect Pogba to be dropped again for McTominay. I would hold for Leicester.

Strange one, i think Mourinho was giving him a slap not he wrist for his behaviour in the Spurs game, I also could be wrong.

Have to give him the Newcastle game...

        Highest point scorer so far:

        Nick Pope, 5 points.

I’ve somehow only dropped 3k which means there must be more pain like mine out there!

        Pickford (Hennessey)
        Otamendi Jones Alonso (Mee, Ogbonna)
        Salah Sterling Walcott Son Lingard
        Kane Firmino (Niasse)
        2FT 0ITB

Don't know what to do with the defence, might just stick with it.

        Other ideas is either
        A) Son -> Mkhi
        B) Lingard -> Shaq
        C) Son + Lingard -> Mkhi +. Shaq

I still have DCL in my team. Probably not worth changing? Playing 3-5-2. Maybe he can something in gw31.

People looking to draft in Sanchez should consider that he has 2 very tough fixtures and 1 blank in the next 5.

        Whats the rush?

I'll be looking at him from GW 32 onwards.
