Scout Notes – Premier Pair Make Progress

Huddersfield Town need extra time to ensure that their FA Cup journey goes on – and another Gameweek 31 fixture will go ahead – while a forgotten striker option finds some form as Swansea City destroy lower-league opposition.

The most notable issue to arise from Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at Birmingham last night was that it now guarantees a third fixture will be played in Gameweek 31.

The Terriers had to wait until extra time to secure their place in the fifth round and a home tie with Manchester United.

That, in turn, means one of those sides will be able to fulfil their league fixture when the quarter-finals take place over the weekend of March 16.

Huddersfield are due to entertain Crystal Palace in the league on that date, while United travel to West Ham.

As both the Eagles and the Hammers are already out of this season’s FA Cup, one of those fixtures will now join the other two matches – Liverpool v Watford and Stoke City v Everton – already guaranteed to take place during Gameweek 31.

Terriers coach David Wagner made five changes to the side that lost at Old Trafford on Saturday, but it was still a team packed with regular starters.

Striker Laurent Depoitre and defender Christopher Schindler missed out through injury, but Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince were recalled in midfield, with the latter’s shot leading to an own goal that leveled the tie.

Despite incessant pressure, Huddersfield couldn’t find a winner in 90 minutes, although they put the tie to bed early on in extra time.

Steve Mounie, from a Mooy assist, and Rajiv van La Parra scored within seven minutes of the restart before Ince rounded off the win a minute into the second period.

Abraham stakes his claim

At the start of Gameweek 12, Swansea striker Tammy Abraham’s ownership peaked at just under one million managers, and his price at 6.0, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Fourteen Gameweeks, no goals and six price drops later, just over 200,000 managers remain.

Four goals in eight Gameweeks made him one of the leading early-season budget strikers in FPL; a mantle that team-mate Jordan Ayew is currently trying on for size.

But Abraham’s star turn in last night’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County looked particularly well-timed in light of the season-ending injury suffered by Wilfried Bony in the Swans’ 1-1 draw at Leicester City last weekend.

Speaking before the FA Cup fourth round replay, manager Carlos Carvalhal was happy to talk up Abraham’s prospects.

“Tammy Abraham is an interesting player. He has only been training with us for something like a week and a half after injury. Wilfried’s injury will give more opportunities to him and he is someone we believe in a lot.”

The striker responded with an eye-catching first-half display against the League Two side, scoring two goals and setting up another as the Swans went into the interval 4-1 up.

Abraham then capped a fine display with an assist for the final goal.

Carvalhal’s post-match summary acknowledged the striker’s performance, though he also made it clear that he expects more.

“He is progressing – but he can do better in my opinion. He knows he can do better. If you ask me between now and when we arrived has he progressed, he has but I’m still thinking he can do better. We will try to push him to do better.”

Ayew’s four goals in the last eight Gameweeks is likely to keep him in the side for the short term. However, Abraham will need monitoring, particularly if he is given a chance to take advantage of his team’s excellent schedule.

Swansea entertain Burnley this weekend before an FA Cup fifth round tie at Sheffield Wednesday.

The fixtures after that (bha WHU hud SOT mun wba EVE) could well decide their Premier League fate and if Abraham can rediscover his early-season form, it could revitalise a side that has managed a joint-worst 19 league goals thus far.

New signings Andre Ayew and Andy King were cup-tied and unavailable to Carvalhal, who made seven changes to the team that drew at Leicester. That saw him revert to a 4-4-1-1, giving Luciano Narsingh an opportunity to impress on the right flank.

The Dutch international set up three of the Swans’ four first-half goals as Abraham and Nathan Dyer – again playing up behind Abraham – scored two apiece.

Kyle Naughton also boosted his stock with a second-half goal, at a time when Fantasy managers will be assessing the merits of the Swans backline.

Wayne Routledge, Tom Carroll and debutant Dan James rounded off the scoring, with an assist coming from Routledge.

Swansea are now one win from an FA Cup quarter-final place.

Should they beat Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round, that would mean their Gameweek 31 home match with Southampton would have to be rescheduled.

And even if they don’t, the league match might still not go ahead as the Saints also remain in the FA Cup.

The south coast side take on West Brom in the fifth round. Should the Baggies be knocked out, their Gameweek 31 trip to Bournemouth would then be confirmed.

A reminder that Ben Crellin’s Twitter Moment provides full detail on the scenarios that could develop for Gameweek 31 and beyond.

Just because an average or below-average player scores, or plays well, against a lower league team in the FA Cup doesn't mean he will get you loads of points in the coming weeks in the Premier League. Why do some people get so excited?

Surely that was guaranteed before the match was played, because if they lost, their match with Crystal Palace would be guaranteed to take place? Don't see how them winning guarantees an extra fixture.

A lot have 2 or 3 liverpool already, who will play in GW31 so starting with 2/3 players already...can slowly ship in players between now and GW31...for example I can field 10 with a -4.

Already have Firmino, Salah, Walcott...will get in Shaqiri, Bauer and so on.

There is no time to prepare for BGW35 due to the DGW34 where the big teams will play DGW34 and then wont play GW35.

Also more teams playing BGW35, therefore there is a bigger selection, with the likes of Arsenal where Monreal etc could be gold.

      I still advocate GW 38.
You have the most budget presumably you've had all season and the best option to field the cheapest bench
You can target players going for something or are on teams going for something or at home doing a lap of honour
The scoring in that week make it like a DGW.

Think about if you used it last year and targeted all the people who were being flagged going into it.

I’m not usually either. A lot comes down to M.Sanchez’s team & plans. A big question for me is whether M Sanchez is likely to take a hit in preparations for GW31 anyway. If MS is likely to take a hit to field 11 players for GW31, then now is definitely the time to do it with his current defence.

I’m a bit torn this week between a few players. Who would you bench from

    A) Otamendi (LEI)
    B) Daniels (hud)
    C) Son (ARS)
    D) Shaqiri (BHA)

There’s a chance Alonso won’t play which would make this question mute anyway.

I’m currently leaning towards putting Otamendi as my first sub as there’s a good chance Leicester will score and his ceiling his lower than Son & Shaqiri. Not a fan of benching premium defenders generally though, should I be looking at Shaq instead?

Ha, while writing that up I’d pretty much convinced myself that Daniels wasn’t an option for the bench and considered removing him from the post. I just can’t see Hud scoring against them. Good to hear a different view on that though. I’d been thinking about Huds goalscoring rather than Bournemouth’s defending

  16. The case to captain Kane
    Ludo
    • 10 Years
    6 years, 2 months ago

Harry Kane is currently sitting third in the FFS Captain Poll, with 11.54% of the vote, behind Agüero on 20.67%, and Salah on 37.2%.

As someone who has captained Salah for both the last two gameweeks, I know just how consistent and explosive he is with the armband. People are finally clocking onto the fact that Salah is the best FPL player in the game this season, and he should be our captain most of the time. That doesn't make him the best captain every week, though!

When you're choosing between in-form big hitters (Salah, Agüero and Kane have all scored 4 in their last 4), the captaincy is often largely decided by fixtures.

This gameweek, Salah plays sou, Agüero has LEI, and Kane has ARS. Part of the reason Salah was overlooked last week was that he played a top six team, in TOT, whereas Agüero led the poll with an away fixture at a non-top six team - bur.

However, prior to GW26, Burnley had conceded 9 goals in 12 home games (0.75 per game), whereas Tottenham had conceded 13 goals in 12 away games (1.08 per game) - TOT was the better fixture on paper.

Similarly, this week, Southampton have conceded 19 goals in 14 home games (1.36 per game), Leicester have conceded 20 goals in 13 away games (1.54 per game) and Arsenal have conceded 21 goals in 13 away games (1.62 per game). That's right - ARS actually looks the best fixture of the three.

We are often guilty of overlooking just how big of an impact home advantage plays. Kane and Spurs struggled at Wembley at the start of the season, of course, but after blanking in his first 4 league games of the season there, Kane has 10 goals and an assist in his last 9 PL matches at home.

Arsenal may have looked rejuvenated as an attacking force against Everton, with the arrivals of Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan, but they remain suspect defensively, particularly on the road. Their last two trips on the road have resulted in 3-1 and 2-1 defeats to Swansea and Bournemouth, respectively.

After Ramsey's hat-trick against Everton, you'd have to expect he'll start again at Spurs, alongside the ever-present Xhaka in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1. That formation allows Wenger to cram in more of his new attacking players, and they've now played a back four in each of their last 4 in all competitions, reverting from the back three after the Bournemouth defeat.

It's worth noting, then, how Arsenal have performed defensively with a back four in recent times. In the league this season, they have played a back four in 6 games, conceding 8 goals (1.33 per game). They have played a back three for the other 20 games, conceding 27 goals (1.35 per game), so there's not much in it there.

However, in 2016/17, Arsenal conceded 40 goals in 30 games with a back four (1.33 per game), before tightening up considerably after a switch to a back three towards the end of the season, conceding just 4 goals in 8 games (0.50 per game).

A large reason for that solidity was that neither Xhaka nor Ramsey is a natural holding player, and by adding another centre back behind them, and sacrificing another attacking player to do so, more security was provided at the back. By playing in this more open style, I think there's a chance we could have a goal-fest on our hands at Wembley.

Kane has scored 6 goals in 7 games against Arsenal, and whilst these statistics often carry little underlying meaning, Kane is clearly motivated for these matches. Not just because he's a Spurs fan himself, but after his release from the Arsenal youth team at the age of eight, these games have a special significance for him. In his recent article for The Players' Tribune, Kane speaks of playing with 'a chip on my shoulder' when facing the Arsenal youth team for the first at the age of eleven, and he still feels he has a point to prove whenever they meet.

Personally, I think the North London derby will be an open game, and Kane will be even more desperate to score than he usually is. Salah and Agüero are great options, as always, but an overlooked Harry Kane is a dangerous thing.

Great write up Ludo. Hats off.

As a Sanchez owner I feel like he should be my captain for the “explosive differential” factor otherwise there was no point bringing him in last week, especially as I plan to dump him in the next few weeks.

However that being said, I’m struggling to now not captain Harry.

      - 10 of those goals were conceded in 3 games against City, Liverpool and the Swansea game (Swansea throwing up freak goals ...)
      - Liverpool are the highest scorers in the PL away from home, scoring 4 more goals away from home that Spurs have scored at Wembley.
      - Salah has scored the same number of goals & has the same number of double digit hauls away from home as Kane has at home ... so no 'home advantage' ?
      - Its a london derby, form goes out the window and anything can happen, red cards or 0-0
      - Struggling to see anything in your post to help the captain choice - it will be a simple gut guess imho 🙂

I own Kane and have captained him 13 times
I own Salah and have captained him 3 times (I think)
I don't support Arsenal or Liverpool or Spurs or any English team

Salah has achieved more double digit hauls overall than Kane, and the same number away from home as Kane at home - he is simply more relaiable

Ownership and EO is important, especially with Salah, Kane, Sanchez and Kun all providing great options

Salah will get my vote ...

I think this is a good talking point. Ludo is obviously a great writer, but it is easy to fall into the trap of not listening to all sides of the argument. I bet if Ludo really wanted to he could easily (for him) make an equally compelling case for captaining Salah or Aguero.

Salah away and Kane at home might be more or less equivalent, but I think Arsenal at home is better than Southampton away - that's the main point.

Swansea had 5 Big Chances against Arsenal - I don't think they were particularly lucky to score 3 in that match.

Here's Arsenal's recent record away at the top six.

        17/18:
        Man City 3-1 Arsenal
        Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal
        Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal

        16/17:
        Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal
        Man City 2-1 Arsenal
        Chelsea 3-1 Arsenal
        Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal
        Spurs 2-0 Arsenal

I loved the post Ludo, Kane a strong C candidate vs ARS of course but agree with this.

Those SWA goals were very fortunate for SWA (last two at least), two big mistakes from Monreal, one that led to Cech missing the ball trying to long kick it and Ayew scoring from few yards after he got that ball and the other was Monreal wanted to kick the ball with kung fu kick and missed it of course and that ended in small counter attack where Mustafi tried to block the pass from Ayew and it ended up on Clucas who put it away from few yards again. Lots of unnecessary mistakes from Monreal that I doubt he'll repeat often.

But don't doubt TOT won't give that ARS defense problems. It's just they can also look good on it's day.

I did. I take your point, but these mistakes aren't completely random incidents.

Arsenal have committed more defensive errors leading to a shot than any other team (23), and more leading to a goal (11) than anyone else.

It also isn't anything new under Wenger. Here's Arsenal ranking amongst PL teams for errors leading to a shot in the past seven seasons (17/18 to 11/12) - the higher the number, the worse.

            1st, 6th, 5th, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 1st

Yeah I agree with this which is why I selected Salah cap due to Spurs attacking and Salah doing the biz on the break against Davies

Arsenal are leaky, will attack and will leave plenty of space and options for strikers so yeah it could be a good one

Thank you. Great information. One counter point to conclusions based on rank order differences: 1.62 vs 1.54. So, Arsenal have allowed, on average, 8 hundredths a goal per away game than Leicester. That difference seems too small to conclude that either team has a relatively poor away record for goals allowed.

You're right, and I don't think there's much in it between Kane and Kun for GW27.

My main point is that I don't think Salah is a much better option than Kane for the weekend - at any rate, not enough so to warrant a 25 point lead over him in the poll.

Stats are fine, but the eye test is better, and Burnley looked terrible against City. City were just really wasteful.

Sterling was open so many times and they would either not pass to him or pass very late. Not to mention his awful miss which 9 times out of 10 he would've scored. It was surprising that it ended 1-1. So I don't agree that the Spurs fixture was a big reason as to why Salah succeeded. Sterling captainers were just unlucky.

1.36, 1.54 and 1.62 per game are too close to call imo and doesn't definitively make the Arsenal fixture stand out. Also, Arsenal have a great record at Wembley. They've done well against big sides in recent times there. Not saying they will again, but I don't see a strong case for Kane over the other two picks.

Salah rarely ever blanks. Kane blanks often.

Ownership is another consideration depending on whether you are keen to hold onto a lead, or look to rise up the rankings.

So for example in the top 10K Kane has a 64% ownership, while Salah has 93%.*

I can see Salah being more heavily captained among this bunch than Kane so Salah is the safe choice but Kane offers the potential to rise up the rankings. To captain Kane is based on two things though

      1. That Kane will do well when he has blanked in so many games before this season (inc against Arsenal)
      2. That Salah will fail to score, which he rarely does.

Meanwhile in terms of overall rank Kane is frequently more favoured as a captain....so is less of a 'differential'.

For me I'm still deciding between Kane and Salah. Both great options. What may swing it though for Salah is Kane's many blanks this season and my safety first approach to this season, which has served me well so far.

I know - may be an old wives tale - but could be logic to it. Perhaps he feels in better shape nd more alert at 12:30pm rather than at 4:30pm (eg pen miss against Liverpool).

Here's Kane's record when starting in 12:30pm Saturday kick-offs (it was 12:45 before last season)

          17/18:
          GW6 - whu - 13 points (2 goals)
          GW7 - hud - 13 points (2 goals)
          GW12 - ars - 1 point (blank)
          GW20 - SOU - 17 points (3 goals)

          16/17:
          GW3 - LIV - 2 points (blank)
          GW21 - WBA - 17 points (3 goals)
          GW33 - BOU - 12 points (1 goal, 1 assist)

          7 games, 75 points (10.7 PPG), 11 goals, 1 assist.

Five double figure hauls, but two blanks against Liverpool and Arsenal, though. I think his success in these games has more to do with the fixtures Spurs have played in them.

For the life of me I can't fathom why so few people captained Salah this past week. Even before this latest haul, he was still far and away the most prolific points scorer in the league in terms of both total points and PPG. He also had what I considered to be a favourable fixture at home to Spurs. The way I see it, the games against the top teams are great for Liverpool and Salah because you know they wont be coming to Anfield to defend and the game will be open which always plays into Liverpool's hands with their style of play. Man Utd would be the only team I would preclude from this as Mourinho does play defensive tactics in the big games. In addition, it appears that Salah may also be on penalties now. He seems to be on a mission to finish top goalscorer which may explain why he wrestled the ball off Milner in the Huddersfield game.

isn't the answer to this question obvious?

It's the fear of one of the other two hitting 3, 4 or even 5 goals. And maybe assisting. It might be the best strategy to captain Salah each week, but that threat definitely still exists and clearly worries a lot of people. We don't have any evidence of that yet from Salah

what planet are you on? Totally nonsensical post. How often do players score 4 or 5 goals? The stats suggest that Salah would be the one to fear the most over the others. Who is likely to get the most points? The answer based on the season so far is Salah. Salah statistically has the highest points potential out of all the players in the game based on past events of this season. Let me lay out the stats for you:

          Total Points:

          Salah 204
          Sterling 165
          De Bruyne 161
          Aguero 141

          PPG:

          Salah 8.2
          Sterling 6.9
          Aguero 6.7
          Kane 6.4
          De Bruyne 6.2

          Double figure hauls:

          Salah 11
          Kane 8
          Sterling 7
          De Bruyne 7
          Aguero 4

Salah destroys the rest on every stat I can think of. Its just a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Don't know why you need to imply i'm living on another planet, or what you're actually attempting to argue against.

            Aguero: 20, 17, 16
            Kane: 17, 17, 16
            Salah: 16, 15, 15

Kane and Aguero have a higher ceiling, despite them having seasons with a slightly lower ceiling than we know they can achieve. We know they're both capable of hitting a 25.

So my argument is that it's pretty obvious people know that both in this season and previous seasons Kane and Aguero have demonstrated a higher ceiling. We KNOW they can hit 3, 4, 5 goals.

So what point exactly are you arguing with? I never claimed they were better choices, or that they've outscored Salah. Why are you so defensive?

      good work

Never understood why anyone would captain a player away at Burnley. Aside from the very occasional exception, Burnley modus operandi is DON'T MAKE ANY DEFENSIVE ERRORS. Don't give the opposition one single big chance, and they usually go most of the way to achieving that. Doesn't matter who you are.

I captained Salah for last 2 weeks as well. Salah is really good in big games, when the opposite team is good offensively, not sitting in defence, not parking a bus. I still wonder why all my rivals were surprised and went like "you had a gut to captain Salah against Spurs..". It should have been me saying same thing with Aguero against Burnley.
Being undoubtedly the best player in FPL this season, the point is, compared to Firmino, Coutinho, and even Mane, Salah still doesn't have that class to outperform "bus" defenders, imho. Give him a square meter open space and he will destroy everyone on his way. He failed against Swansea (while I got 16 from Kane). He was very very close to failure against Huddersfield, it was us captainers' luck he got that penalty.
Soton defence is now the issue. Will they park a bus? Will Mo be on pens going forward?
Saying that, I am still in a dilemma. As my ML leader, I better go with Salah..but my heart says go with Kane, don't miss another early kick-off haul..

since Jesus got injured Kun has 29pts in 3 home games - returned in all of them. 5 goals.
City home goal average is still over 3 goals per game.
Still have to figure Mahrez won't play and it does have an impact on how Leicester play. Not so dangerous on the break and will allow City to press even higher.
All 3 have Europe next week that could have an impact on minutes.
Tie breaker atm is I brought Kun just for the period Jesus was out (which i had said all season i would do if either City striker got injured). So hopefully this is a fond farewell from Kun as won't keep him with jesus possibly a factor next GW.

There is always a case to captain Harry regardless of numbers. He's not the best option this week though as the NLD can go either way and all form goes out the window. Higher chance of a yellow card too. Can't ignore salah this week.

Do I take a -4 to change something else ? Richarlison is out of form and seems to be my weaker starter, maybe Shaqiri to replace him ? Don't see myself taking a -4 to do a bench move so I will carry RLC & Speroni a little more.

        Yeah, saw him too.

Also Kevin Long (Burnley) but he's at risk with Tarkowski.

What would you do with this lot? Need to free up 1 million so I Can afford Kun ➡ Kane next week.

    DDG
    Alonso Otamendi Dunk
    Salah Sterling Walcott Milivojevic
    Kun Firmino Wilson

    Elliot Kenny Mahrez* Christensen*
    1 FT, 0.1 ITB

    A) Christensen to Bauer / Mee
    B) Mahrez to Mkhi / Deulofeu
    C) anything else?

How likely is it Kevin Long will start for Burnley again? Hahaha I'm worried that Jones/Alonso won't start again and my bench is too crap for this to happen!!!

Crazy to play Bauer (BHA) and Mee (swa) over Otamendi (LEI)? Should probably bench Mee right?
