Scout Notes – United On The Slide

Sales in Manchester United’s assets continue on the back of a second defeat in three, while Huddersfield Town regain their scoring touch just when they need it the most.

Four wins in the last six matches, five clean sheets in seven…you’d be excused for thinking that all is well at Manchester United.

But yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United was their second in three Gameweeks, and there’s a strong sense of a team out of balance, form and confidence.

The individuals remain stellar, the prospects rather more earthbound.

Phil Jones and Paul Pogba, sold by 97,000 and 99,000 respectively ahead of Gameweek 27, returned to the starting XI at St James’ Park.

Anthony Martial was another brought back into the fold as coach Jose Mourinho continued to chop and change his side to accommodate new signing Alexis Sanchez, who was captained by 78,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers looking for a major differential.

Take-up in the Chilean has been slow since his move to Old Trafford, but he’s now in 5.1% of squads, only to blank for the second time in his three matches as a United player.

Jesse Lingard’s form is even worse.

Yesterday’s defeat marked a fifth successive blank and he’s been subbed off just after the hour-mark in each of the last three Gameweeks since Sanchez arrived.

The England midfielder was the third most sold player (169,000+) heading into the weekend and is second only to Marcos Alonso for sales since then, with a further 34,000 parting company.

Pogba, who has seven blanks from nine starts since returning from injury, is also among the top five for Gameweek 28 most sold as faith in United’s attack, in particular, is set to plummet due to both the Newcastle result and the upcoming schedule.

The Red Devils will face Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City in the near future and should they beat Huddersfield in the FA Cup fifth round, their Gameweek 31 clash with West Ham will need to be rescheduled.

That would leave just two ‘strong’ fixtures – a trip to Crystal Palace and a visit from Swansea City – over the next six Gameweeks.

A Champions League tie with Sevilla only adds to their busy schedule, hiking the likelihood of rotation.

The first leg is four days before Gameweek 28’s visit of Chelsea, the second leg three days after Liverpool come to Old Trafford.

Magpies showing form

A first home win in the league since October underlined the improved form of a Newcastle side that has now lost just twice in nine league matches – and both of those were against Man City.

But that doesn’t promote the need for investment in their players.

The Magpies’ schedule is a decidedly mixed affair, with four away fixtures (bou liv tot lei) and two huge home match-ups, versus Southampton and Huddersfield, to come over the next six Gameweeks.

That Gameweek 31 trip to Spurs will need to be rescheduled, though, should the north London club defeat Rochdale in the FA Cup this weekend.

Matt Ritchie scored the winner yesterday – his first goal of the season – from a Dwight Gayle assist, with the former given maximum bonus for a third 11-point haul of the campaign.

Loan signing Martin Dubravka picked up two bonus points in a fine nine-point debut in which the goalkeeper helped secure Newcastle’s first clean sheet in five matches.

That should finally kill off any hope 18.2% of FPL managers were harbouring of their man Rob Elliot regaining the number one jersey.

The 4.1-priced stopper is now third in that particular pecking order, with Karl Darlow returning to the bench yesterday.

Terriers find some bite again

Steve Mounie starred as Huddersfield made it back-to-back 4-1 wins in all competitions.

The Terriers followed up an extra-time triumph over Birmingham in the FA Cup with a vital victory against Bournemouth.

And the Benin international was at the heart of the win, scoring one goal and earning two assists as Huddersfield prevailed in the league for the first time since Gameweek 16, lifting themselves out of the relegation zone for good measure.

Maximum bonus handed Mounie (5.7) a season-high 15-point return – only the third time he’s managed double digits in the campaign.

Huddersfield’s schedule (wba tot SWA CRY new bha WAT) will tempt some to invest in Mounie’s budget charms, but he has been consistently rotated with Laurent Depoitre by coach David Wagner.

The Belgian striker missed the Bournemouth match with a foot problem, having started in three of the previous four Gameweeks.

Midfielder Aaron Mooy provided an assist on the day and was unlucky not to be on the pitch when Huddersfield were awarded a late penalty.

The Australian, the side’s designated spot-kick taker, had been stretchered off with a gash to the knee by then, leaving Rajiv van La Parra to convert.

The extent of the injury to the Australian midfielder, who is in 5.6% of FPL squads, will be assessed this week, but he does have close to a fortnight to recover for Gameweek 28’s vital trip to West Brom.

The penalty came after new signing Alex Pritchard was fouled in the area. That capped a fine first home start for the ex-Norwich City man, who also scored and received two bonus for a 12-point haul.

The victory brought a five-match losing streak to an end and that favourable schedule, plus a guaranteed Gameweek 31 fixture (at home to Crystal Palace) should they lose to Man United in the FA Cup next weekend, could promote interest in their key assets.

Defensively, however, they remain fragile, with no clean sheets since Gameweek 21.

Off day for Cherries

Bournemouth went into the match on a seven-match unbeaten run, but were a shadow of the team that had seen off Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks.

Striker Callum Wilson’s four goals and two assists during that run prompted a further 101,000+ FPL managers to bring him in this week, only for their man to struggle badly.

He had no shots at all – the entire team managed just two on target all match – but a good schedule (NEW lei TOT WBA wat CRY) should persuade his 10.2% ownership to hold for now.

The Cherries’ goalscorer, Junior Stanislas, has both form and fixtures on his side. He’s scored two goals and provided another two assists in the last four Gameweeks now, suggesting his 0.5% ownership might not stay so low for long.

Should West Brom lose to Southampton in the FA Cup next weekend, Bournemouth’s Gameweek 31 match against the Baggies will be confirmed, further adding to the appeal of their assets.

        Why was Pogba even playing.
It was obvious he couldn't even sprint.
Poor judgement from the United medical team that probably cost them 3 points.

Seems Lingard price will be dropping tonight!

If you have to make a transfer before this weekend’s FA Cup games, which bench fodder would you go for ?

    A) Milivojevic (4.8) - needs MU to beat HUD in FA Cup, nailed on
    B) Capoue (4.8) - WAT has a confirmed game, maybe rotation risk, albeit started last 3 games under new coach
    C) Van La Parra (4.8) - attacker, but needs MU to beat HUD
    D) Ibe (4.9) - needs SOT to beat WBA, but maybe rotation risk from Stanislas, King etc
    E) 4.3 mids such as McArthur, Lewis Cook - good for 1-2 pts
    F) others ?

I would hold fire. Don't forget the (slim) possibility that Citeh and Arsenal can blank next GW. Not to mention they both play three games before their next league outing. Much better to see what needs to be done when you have a clear picture

FWIW McArthur has been playing pretty far forward from what I've seen. Not far behind Mili as an option imo (and significantly cheaper)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

With most of the relegation embattled teams doing well over the weekend should we perhaps be targeting some of their assets, particularly as cheap options in defence, a fifth midfielder or third striker.

Or was this weekend a blip and we should instead target players that play against them.

If backing the relegation scrappers which ones appeal?

    Swansea defenders and Fabianski perhaps?

    Pritchard at Huddersfield?

    Bournemouth mids and Wilson?

Newcastles's budget offerings, with Kenedy continuing to impress?

What of Brighton's Murray, Gross or Izquierdo? They look up for the fight.

Swansea defender/ GK do look appealing.
I must admit I had no knowledge of the new manager but he seems to know what he's at and the players seem to love him going by the MOTD post match interviews.

I was wary of the new manager too...looked like a move of a team preparing itself for the championship where he has experience.

Turns out they've got a gem. Swansea have options all over now - partic in defence.

I got Mawson in this week and am considering a double up with Fabianski given their recent form. Ben Foster is another consideration. The FA cup results will help shape my thinking a little here in the coming weeks because although its not essential, i'd like assets that play in 31 ideally.

I can safely say now that Duffy and Dunk's goals will never come and Brighton will not get the level of clean sheets I'd have hoped for.

Izquierdo and Gross though definitely appeal as differentials.

Yep, I was literally just thinking about doing Otamendi + Duffy --> VVD + Mawson.

Bou mids not appealing, have Ibe but he's got to go now

Pritchard in on my mind, but will give it one more game to see if he passes the eye test

Can't see Swansea defence do better than Burnley defence, and fixtures are good for Burnley

Staying away from Brighton assets, can see them play more safe to avoid relegation

Im a Huddersfield fan and was at the game.Pritchard looks an interesting option at his price. He was the missing link between the midfield and Striker and looked positive every time he got the ball.If fit him or Mooy could be decent enablers after the spurs game with good fixtures and more than likely a game in gw31

This is a good week to assess which scrappers are really up for the fight with a lot of relegation candidates playing against each other.

I will be avoiding Brom and Stoke though, I think their fate is sealed. I am also beginning to worry for Saints now, though my gut says they should do just enough.

Budget defenders__Dummett, Stephens, and a couple of Swans for me.

i think it's the right time to have a go for a few cheap alternatives (not for cost reasons) but for the fixtures.

Premium sides have tough fixtures against each other. Don't fancy Utd or Chelsea next few weeks. City defence don't offer value.

Not sure about strikers but a few mids & quite a good selection of defenders available.

All the concentration on BGW31 is distracting from a pretty difficult block of fixtures GW28-30 - particularly for the premium sides

That’s the beauty of FPL - there’s value to be had everywhere. I’m never one to write a team off as “rubbish”, there’s always someone worth considering. I think the only team I haven’t owned a player from this season is Huddersfield, and if they go out of the Cup then I’ll be taking a look at their assets for GW31 🙂

Keep until we know more. Heaton is back in training - I guess its a matchreadiness aspect that Dyche is concerned about. Burnley have quite a punishing fitness regime so you have to be tip top to make the XI. Its why it is taking the likes of Ward so long to get back into the side.

However, I am still stuck with Lingard and I want to transfer him out... Any ideas on who to transfer in would be appreciated, got 6,5M to shop for.
    A) Doucouré
    B) Shaqiri
    C) Deulofeu
    D) Choupo-M
    E) Albrighton (the hype gone?)

I gladly take other suggestions aswell..

    Thanks and cheers

FPL is a game of ups and downs. My best GW rank ever was 30k-something a couple of years ago. Even more fascinating than getting the great scores and GW-ranks is getting the awful ones. Considering the massive amount of players in the game, millions of whom are dead teams and auto pick-teams, I can hardly understand how it's possible to end up with a GW rank below 5million (as an active player).

Nonetheless, this is my worst GW score this season. I challenge you all to beat it 🙂

    GW17 26pts 5,383,712 GW rank

      That is terrible.

How did you manage that by GW 17?? Surely you had at least some of the popular picks?

about 3-4 seasons ago (before 2nd WC, chips etc.) one Feb?? GW got 18 pts from 10 players in a full GW.
2 red cards, injuries meant had 6 players left by 60 minutes.

Obviously rank wasn't as low as yours - only about 3 players back then 🙂

Fair play though it shows everyone can bounce back from a shocker looking at your OR.

    Would you do:

Otademendi, Duffy, Pogba --> Mahrez, VVD, Mawson for a -4?

    Pogba definitely out for me.

Man city 2 next fixtures look leaky to me so Otamendi out too.. Liverpool actually doing alright and VVD has goal threat.

Mahrez, greeat fixtures just not sure about form due to the move.

    Thoughts?

    1. MTPockets

Probably (assuming Mahrez forgiven), but just the Ota/Pogba > VVD/Mahrez part for free.

Is McArthur a better bet? Got 5.7 to spend but don't want to use much of that on bench fodder.

            1. MTPockets
                6 years, 2 months ago

McArthur has TOT/MUN/che/hud/LIV so not sure even rotatable.
Just noticed Fer is out injured actually. Maybe that cements Carroll for a while. Not familiar with Swansea setup tbh.

Mahrez basically has good fixures until the end. Just the uncertainity over him playing, but assume he has to really.

nice thanks men, I have 2 FTs going to monitor until the deadline but would you do?

                  a) Ota + Pogba > VVD + Mahrez
                  b) Ota + Pogba + Wilson > VVD + Firmino + 6.1 Mid (-4) ?

Hard one. A imo. With CL back Firmino could be rotated or played on the wing ruining his appeal. Also Pool don't score much at home and 3 of their next 4 are at home. Would keep Wilson for now

Otamendi to VVD? Should I try and upgrade Depoitre to Firmino/Vardy? Will mean 3-4-3 though to accommodate Wilson. Who to get in midfield? KDB away form is putting me off while Arnie and Shaq don't have the fixtures.

              Kun Niasse Wilson

              1FT .9 ITB.
