Meet the Manager #2: Phil Ampleford (Philman)

Phil Ampleford’s stellar run of six straight top 10,000 finishes, including two inside the top 1,000, was brought to a sudden end in 2017/18 when he finished 95,198th in the overall rankings.

Undaunted, he reflected on mistakes made that year and is back on track in style in the current campaign, nestled inside the top 3,000.

In our second Meet the Manager interview, Phil chats to Joe about the strategies that have earned him so many high finishes.

He also reveals what went wrong last season and how he has learned from mistakes made.

In addition, he finds time to look in-depth at his current successful squad and offer advice to other Fantasy managers about how to do well in 2018/19.

A flexible approach and close attention to defender selection, both expensive and cheap, looks key to success this time around as Phil aims to bounce back from last year’s disappointment.

The chat with Phil is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Nick (aka Triggerlips) can be viewed here.

I keep flicking between these 3 moves..

    A) Pog to Rich
    B) Salah > Kane
    C) Salah/Pog > Kane/Rich (-4)

The decision may go down to the deadline.

Yep Salah rested last night, got to keep him. I was considering the same but may do the Kane switch next week for a hit - makes more sense with fixtures.

Bennet before AWB or even start over Ings (that’s what I’m doing).

I’m already on -4 with this team but I am falling behind still having Pedro and not having one or more of Rich, Hazard or Kane. What would you prioritise given anything would mean more hits?

    £0.6itb
    Foster, Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, PVA, Doherty, AWB
    Salah, Mané, Fraser, Hughes, Pedro*
    Aguero, Wilson, Mitro

    A) Pedro > Rich (-4)
    B) Mané > Rich (-4)
    C) Mané, Pedro > Haz, Gundogan/ Hojbjerg/ Lennon (-8)
    D) Salah, Pedro, PVA > Haz, Rich, Trippier (-12)
    E) Mané, Wilson, PVA > Kane, Bennett, Lennon/ Hojbjerg (-12)

-12 feels (and is) ridiculous so help me see sanity. What’s the priority do you think?
I still have WC and planned to play GW9 I think

    Thanks!

He didn't play the full match.
I'd hold for this week and possibly sell next. Would not go near Moura

    Need some advice.
I'm planning to take a -4 to get Kane in next week, for a 1 week captain punt before wildcard.

First I was looking at sticking with my team this week, then do 2 changes next week (-4), downgrade one of Deeney/Fraser/Mane/Robertson to get Kane in for Aubameyang.

Now after seeing Moura, Alli and Lamela getting alot of minutes yesterday and Son benched, I'm really tempted to do Mane -> Son this week (for -4), as I can see Son starting this week, getting benched vs. Barca and starting against Cardiff at home. (the very least get alot of minutes).. Then do Auba -> Kane next week for free. Mane played 70min yesterday and has not had the greatest underlying numbers lately aswell.

The problem I see is that if I do this I'm decideing to go without Mane on my WC, because the value I lose. (Im going with Salah + Robby/TAA and concidering tripple with Mane/Firm)..

    Toughts on this?

@Joe and team - One piece of feedback on the meet the manager series.. First of all i think it is a great series.. I think you need to also spend a minute bringing out the personal side of managers.. it would be great to know who they are, who they support, etc as it brings a personal touch.. same goes to you guys.. i have no clue if this is your full time job.. what else you do.. Joe i know you are a brighton fan but thats about it..

Totally agree, even more, it would be not only interesting to read/watch, this information can be useful to understanding game style of some managers better.

For example, Impulsive persons take more hits, dullard players are more calm and patient. Manager style usually goes from personal features.

If you can wait until GW8 I'd certainly be looking at Kante to Knockaert, then address the Mendy situation with the extra £0.2m.

    1.5m in bank!
Option 1: Mane out Hazard In
Option 2: Aguero out Kane In
Option 3: Keep mane and Aguero
