Moving Target

Moving Target – Raheem Sterling

On July 14, Manchester City signed Raheem Sterling from Liverpool for a reported fee of £44m, which could rise to £49m, making him City’s record signing and the most expensive English player ever. The 20-year-old signed a five-year contract at the Etihad and was City’s first new recruit of the summer, although they have since added two further English signings, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini was clearly delighted with the capture of Sterling and hailed the new boy’s pace and versatility as key to City’s attack:

“I think that Raheem can play in different positions – he can play as a forward because he has a lot of speed or he can play also on the wing. He’s a very young player so he has a lot of things to improve. I think it’s important for him to have a new challenge in our team where he will play with great players which will improve his game. He will also improve us as a team. I think that Raheem has already demonstrated what he can do as a player at Liverpool but he’s just 20-years old so he has a lot of things to improve. “It will depend how he works over the next few years but I am sure he will be very important in our team, especially for his speed.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Jamaica, Sterling moved to London at the age of seven and began his career at Queens Park Rangers in 2003. He spent seven years at Loftus Road, before Liverpool, then managed by Rafael Benitez, swooped to sign the youngster in February 2010 for an initial fee of £600,000, rising to £5 million depending on how many appearances he made for the first team.

Sterling made his senior debut for the Reds in March 2012, coming on as a substitute against Wigan in the Premier League, aged just 17. His first competitive Liverpool goal came later that year, in a 1-0 league win against Reading, and he would go on to make 24 league appearances during the 2012/13 campaign, scoring twice and registering two assists, or six in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

His big breakthrough came the following season, with Sterling flourishing alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge as Liverpool finished second to City in their bid for the Premier League title. He scored nine times and racked up five assists (seven in FPL) from 33 appearances, including the opening goal as the Reds beat City 3-2 at Anfield. Last season, Sterling registered seven goals and seven assists (ten in FPL) from 35 league outings, and regularly played as a centre-forward due to Daniel Sturridge missing much of the campaign through injury. His form dipped towards the end of the season, however, with his contract dispute affecting his on-field performances.

Sterling represented England through all the age-groups and made his senior debut against Sweden in November 2012. He had to wait until March 2014 for his second cap, but a man-of-the-match performance against Denmark helped secure his spot in the 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup. Sterling was one of only a few England players who left Brazil with their reputation enhanced, and he has since gone on to become an integral part of the team, scoring his first goal for his country against Lithuania in March.

THE PROSPECTS

Sterling’s debut for City against Roma yesterday morning immediately caught the eye. Not only did the youngster get on the scoresheet within three minutes of his first outing, his inclusion in the starting XI saw Pellegrini roll out a 4-3-3 set-up, allowing Sterling and David Silva freedom to roam the flanks.

Certainly, such a system would not only bolster Sterling and Silva’s prospects, it would ensure that Sergio Aguero will be utilised as a lone striker – a factor that strengthens the Argentine’s Fantasy potential, given that he operates far more efficiently on his own up top.

It may well be that Pellegrini also flits between his previous 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 formations in accordance with opponent but it’s already clear that Sterling’s acquisition affords the Citizens greater variety in the final third. Able to play on the flank or through the middle, he certainly looks likely to jump ahead of both Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas in the pecking order and is set to vie for our attentions along with Silva and Yaya Toure. Priced at 9.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sterling comes in cheaper than Silva (10.0), but slightly more expensive than Toure (8.5), with Nasri and Navas available at 7.0 and 6.5 respectively.

When assessing our City options, there is also the small matter of Aguero, however. At this point, it is unclear if the Argentine will feature in the Gameweek 1 trip to West Brom and with a clash against Chelsea the following weekend, many Fantasy managers are in a quandary over whether to include him in their initial 15-man squads.

Given that City’s schedule turns very favourable from Gameweek 4 onwards (WAT, cpl, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU), ignoring Aguero looks decidedly dangerous, with the South American an obvious armband candidate for those four home fixtures in particular. Having scored 83 goals last season – ten more than Chelsea – and having found the back of the net 102 times during their title winning 2013/14 campaign, Pellegrini’s side undoubtedly possess tremendous attacking potential.

Bearing in mind that the likes of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez have been priced at 11.5 and 11.0 respectively, doubling up with Aguero and a relatively cheaper City midfielder certainly looks a feasible tactic over that stretch of matches, then, and if Sterling can carry on from yesterday’s display, he could quickly find a place in our five-man midfields for the campaign ahead.

Somebody should do an article on that....I can see more changes in line ups than we have seen for a few season's. Not just new signings but a few long term injuries returning top of that as well.

Would appreciate it if peops could RMT, pls?

Latest version, since Bony & Darmian revelations scuppered my best laid plans to waste.

    Schmeichel - Fabianski
    Koscielny - Azpilicueta - Coates - R. Bennett - Baker
    Silva - Walcott - Ozil - Mane - Albrighton
    Rooney - Kane - C. Wilson

Plan is to either 3 changes in GW2&3 or play the WC chip in GW 4.
Essentially it will involve Kane - Gomis/JROD, Silva to Sterling/Firmino/Fabregas and Rooney - Aguero.

Likely it will go a different way, but gotta have some sort of strategy, no?

I wouldn't read too much into last season as we didn't really know his condition back then until the end of the season. In terms of rotation he may be no more, and no less, a risk than anybody else in that great looking squad. For FPL we have had a good run because of Arsenal injuries over the last couple of years reducing rotation for us....the team damned near had to pick itself.

Expecting him to start while Sanchez returns to fitness. Then it's high risk/high reward, as it always is with Walcott. I may ditch after a couple of GWs.

The thing is, it's easier to start with Walcott and then get Ozil if he doesn't perform than vice-versa.

I have looked at Van Ginkel and he is tempting. I believe he is likely to take Nzonzi's spot and he never scored many points. He may also be a bit expensive for a 5th mid, you would be better saving the extra cash and putting it elsewhere.

If you discount the one player per club rule, there's a Pompey one - which is not bad considering where we are right now:

      Begovic

      Distin / Wilson / Kaboul / Ward

      Ritchie / O'neil / Johnson

      Crouch / Defoe / Nugent

      only one sub: Williamson

Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba has said he has agreed to move to Newcastle. But who is he?

    BBC Sport's Oluwashina Okeleji explains...

Mbemba is a composed and calm defender with amazing pace. At the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo - for whom he has 15 caps - he proved he is quick, strong and versatile and is happy to play in defensive midfield when required.

According to his first two Congolese clubs - ES La Grace and AS Mputu - he was born on 8 August, 1988 but the DR Congo FA listed his date of birth date as November 30, 1991 and Anderlecht as 8 August, 1994. The player himself thinks he was born in 1990.

Bahahahaha it's Obafemi Martins all over again.

I saw his debut in the Serie A at the time, too bad he never improved. He was incredibly fast but he never learned to keep his head up, always head down, just running forward with the ball without looking where he was going. They sold him for like 18M euros.

I meant that he never improved since he debuted and no, he wasn't in the mid 20s, he was visibly younger and smaller in the academy, i watched some games with him back in the day. You could see that he was 17 and was still growing up.

Hi everyone, could you RMT please ?

    Butland | Speroni
    Ivanovic | Koscielny | Mings | Bassong | Angella
    Hazard | Walcott | Chadli | Milner | Ki Sung-Yeung
    Roony | Benteke | Deeney

    £0 ITB

Personally, I'm still trying to decide between Milner or Henderson, and I'm not sure if Ki Sung-Yeung will give me the best bang for my buck (£5.5) for a 5th midfielder

    1. Daaf
      • 9 Years

I quite like your team although it is totally different from my drafts. I will ignore the big choices you have had to make (Haz or no haz, 1 or 2 premium defenders, rotating keepers / 1 for all matches and 3-way def rotation / which 7.0 mid) since it is clear you put some thought into it and felt you had to make those choices.

Only suggestion thing I would make is swap Ki for a 4.5 to gain 1.0. This would give you room to upgrade Deeney to Sakho if you like, Rooney to Costa if you feel like it or possibly even Chadli or Milner to Mane. Same goes for Iva -> Azpi or Kos-> Mert so you can go from 7-> 8.5. I just don't like Ki very much as a fantasy prospect. He is more of a playmaker, plays very deep and has big competion for attackings prospects since Shelvey/Siggy/Montero seem to be more attacking players.

And please don't ask me to name alternatives to him, there don't seem to be many as of now. Same goes for 4.5, but that player belongs mostly on the bench. Are you also planning to play Deeney each week?

      1. Gomolon
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Thank you, yes the problem I had with the 5th Mid is that there doesn't seem to be anyone who jumps out at me (Schneiderling and Wanayama seem to be the popular picks though). Is Sakho that good ? Ive been hearing good things on here about Deeney (Lots of goals for the past 3 seasons in the Championship, Captain, and on penalties).

I'm keeing Rooney because he has good opening fixtures, and is currently United's only 1st team quality striker, so he'll get to play up front rather than as a CAM. I think Ivan + Kos, though expesive, are worth it as they seem to be more attacking minded, so should hopefully yield more points. If they dont, or if they get injured/suspended then I can easily downgrade to Azpi/Mert.

I really think Mane is being overpriced this season in FPL I'm afraid. £8.0 is just too close to the Mata/Di Maria/Cazorla/Oscar/Ozil bracket of £8.5

No, I wouldn't plan to play Deeney each week. I see his use as being a good sub if players are rested, or I can bring him in if he has a good fixture/another player has a bad fixture

        1. Daaf
          • 9 Years

For insight on Sakho, Check out this Community Article! Take a look at the midfielders one too! This should provide you with some useful intel and help you with the choices you need to make. Wonderfull stuff! Besides, his home games are great and you need a cheaper forward to balance your squad who also provides value. I don't really follow the Championship so am not at all familiar with deeney, ritchie and wilson and am therefore not really qualified to judge.

I guess it's a coin flip between Deeney and Wilson, Deeney does have penalties over Wilson. Time will tell I suppose. I cannot disagree with your Rooney arguments and actually like him more than Costa but I just have a feeling that Costa will go berserk against Swansea. This could also mean he gets sent off, he's such a hot head! Maybe I'll swap him for Rooney in GW2, who is playing Villa instead of City. You're also right about Iva + Kos but it wouldn't surprise me if Chelsea didn't keep a clean sheet in their first three games. Mourinho would take a 0-0 against City anyday I suppose. Arsenal is even worse, but as a fan I'm keeping the faith. Haha!

Mane is a bit expensive, but he is a nice differential with good fixtures. Defensively SOU will be more vulnerable than last year, so they will need to score lots of goals to keep the points. Those 1-0 victories are a thing of the past I believe, even though we said the exact same thing last year. I also believe Pelle will improve. People are tough on him because of his cold streak but he had to adapt to a more physical competition and played something like 3300 minutes. With pre-season under his belt, expect him to be sharp again! Having played with Clasie at Feyenoord is also a big advantage, he is one of the best target men in the Premiership and Clasie has great passing ability. Therefore, Mane and Jrod should benefit from Pelle's strengts.

And indeed, there is no appealing 5th mid available!

    Hi guys,

I am re-opening entry to my £5 cash league.

Currently have around 35 members who have paid £5 each. Hoping to get this number to around 60-70 so we have a nice pot of money to give out when the season ends.

    No fees.

    1st Place - 50% of total pot
    2nd Place - 30% of total pot
    3rd Place - 20% of total pot

If you are interested, send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com. The £5 will be paid through PayPal. Weekly updates to be posted on the community round up and hopefully this will become a yearly competition I run.

If you were on the reserve list, please check your emails as I emailed you all a few weeks ago.

    Cheers!
