Scout Report – Idrissa Gueye

Following the earlier addition of former Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair, Aston Villa made Idrissa Gueye their third new signing of the summer, with the midfielder joining from Lille for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million. The Senegal international has penned a four-year contract at Villa Park.

After securing the 25-year-old’s signature, Villa boss Tim Sherwood explained he is looking to get the most out of the versatile Gueye’s attacking potential in the season ahead:

“Idrissa is a good acquisition to the squad. He has the same energy as Fabian Delph. He’s similar to Ramires. He can play flexible as well – as a No 6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No 8 box to box. Idrissa can do both of them. He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That’s what he’s looking to do and we’re happy for him to do that. He wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us.”

THE HISTORY

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye starring for the French outfit.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, before becoming a key player during the past two seasons.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered two assists, triggering reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011 and has since racked up 23 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to open his account for his country. He started all three matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PROSPECTS

With Fabian Delph now departed after his dramatic U-turn and last season’s loanee Tom Cleverley moving to Everton, Sherwood desperately needs to bolster his options in the centre of the park.

Gueye certainly looks an assured starter for the Villains, either in a two or three-man central midfield. Sherwood has recently utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 formations in pre-season and the latter system could see Gueye partnered by Ashley Westwood or Carlos Sanchez, with all three likely to start in a 4-3-3 unless their manager strengthens his midfield options further.

Utilised in a 4-1-2-1-2 set-up at Lille last term, the new boy averaged an effort every 78.1 minutes – granted, that’s hardly spectacular, but, as we saw upon his arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood’s attacking approach should boost his players’ prospects in the final third. Three of Delph’s four assists for the season and all three of Cleverley’s goals were produced under the new manager from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Compared to France legend Jean Tigana by former Senegal head coach Alan Giresse, Guyeye’s ball-winning ability will also be vital for Villa – he made a total of 100 tackles in Ligue 1 last season.

Costing 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Gueye will set you back the same price as wingers Scott Sinclair and Charles N’Zogbia, who will be competing for the wide positions along with the 5.5-priced Jack Grealish if Sherwood opts for a front three. Grealish’s recent injury absence has allowed Sinclair the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth, whilst Christian Benteke’s departure could even see the former Swansea man handed spot-kicks. Clearly, at that price, he could be an ideal fifth midfielder if he can convince Sherwood he’s worthy of a regular role, though there are still some question marks over Sinclair’s minutes once Sherwood has a fully fit squad. Westwood is the cheapest Villa midfielder at 4.5, and looks fairly assured of starts – despite a deep-lying role, he does have some set-piece duties in the locker, which has helped him rack up ten assists over the last three seasons.

With Delph, Benteke and Ron Vlaar all gone, though, Sherwood’s next few acquisition will go some way to determining our opinions on the Midlands outfit for the season ahead. Certainly, the Villa boss will set up his team to play with the handbrake off and Gueye may well arrive on our radars if he benefits in the same way as Delph and Cleverley prospered in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

Looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). That should provide us with the ideal opportunity to see how Gueye adapts to English football, though with Grealish just 0.5 dearer, the former Lille man has some way to go to establish himself as the most viable pick amongst Sherwood’s midfield charges.

I'd say Deeney, not wanting to go the Wilson way for a number of reasons: I think Januzaj will get more points than him this season (seems LVG wants to play him upfront now). Also, minutes played etc

    Repost:

    Final question (year right)

What is the best option in your opinion:

    a) a 3 way rotating def. based on fixtures. Where 1 of Mings/Francis, O'Shea or Taylor plays each week. Fixtures are: AVL, NOR, SWA, LEI, nor, WAT, stk, WAT, NOR, NEW

    OR

    b) a more pricey player such as Alderweireld or Lescott starting each week with 2 x 4m def. such as Taylor and Baker on bench.

Love the name and grav. I'm not convinced on either tbh. The only defenders I'd start every week are premiums (5.5+). May I suggest rotating Stoke and Norwich for 9.0? They have good fixtures too.

4.0s are horrible when you need to call on them and they don't stay, or when they lose value. I'd go with one, but not two.

My own team has no 4.0 and relies on two rotating pairs, with one premium

I prefer A, because B might turn out to have a couple of questionable starters. Trekkers might not work out at Liverpool and Sturridge has to be fit again at some point. And I'm not sure if Mata can hold his place indefinitely amongst the ocean of options that LVG seems to have at Utd.
I think the A choices will all start 33+ games in the Prem this season.

reposting this now i'm not in the murky depths of the deadzone.

there's been a lot of talk in the past few weeks about how it could be a legitimate alternative strategy to prioritise expensive defenders over expensive attackers. i wanted to look at some info which hopefully sheds some more light on this idea, starting with...

    TOP 5 GOALSCORING TEAMS - Gameweeks 1-6
    2011/2012: man utd 22, man city 19, chelsea 12, arsenal 9, spurs 9,
    2012/2013: man utd 14, fulham 13, everton 12, man city 12, chelsea & spurs 11
2013/2014: man city 14, arsenal 13, villa 9, everton 9, liverpool, man utd and swansea 8
    2014/2015: chelsea 19, everton 12, man city 12, arsenal 11, man utd 11

    TOP 5 CLEAN SHEETS - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: man city, arsenal, newcastle, QPR, stoke, swansea 3
2012/2013: chelsea 4, arsenal, west brom and west ham 3, fulham, everton, swansea, stoke, sunderland 2
2013/2014: spurs and southampton 4, man city, everton, liverpool, chelsea and west ham 3
2014/2015: southampton, swansea, west brom, villa and burnley 3

assuming utd, city, chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, spurs and everton as the 'big 7' in terms of pricing in recent years, the goalscoring lists contain those teams 20 times and often WAY ahead of the rest, whereas the clean sheets list contains those teams 10 times, and rarely very far ahead.

point being, the so-called 'premium' sides tend to be a lot more reliably superior in attack than they are in defense during the first 6 gameweeks. to me this suggests that while folks may be right about defense providing more value in theory, the reality is that the right defenders are much, much harder to choose than the right attackers, early on at least. the predictability of the premium strikers/mids even at an early stage is what necessitates their being prioritised.

however, this doesn't account for a defender's attacking points, and it's fair to assume that defenders will score more attacking points in teams that score more goals. to make sure, let's look at that in more detail:

TOP SCORING DEFENDERS (GOALS) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: 15 defenders scored 1 goal, 9 of them from the 'big 7'
2012/2013: rafael and ivanovic (2), 16 with 1 goal inc. 9 from the 'big 7'
2013/2014: baines, davies (swa) 2, 16 with 1 goal inc. 5 from the 'big 7'
    2014/2015: dier, ivanovic 2, 16 with 1 goal inc. 6 from the 'big 7'

TOP SCORING DEFENDERS (ASSISTS) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: bosingwa (che) and richards (mci) 2, 12 assisted 1 inc. 7 from the 'big 7'
    2012/2013: baines 2, 11 assisted 1 inc. 5 from the 'big 7'
    2013/2014: zabaleta 2, 12 with 1 assist inc. 6 from the 'big 7'
2014/2015: baines, zabaleta and dann 2, 15 with 1 assist inc. 6 from the 'big '7

in the first 6 gameweeks a defender has had a goals+assists tally of more than 3 never (in the past 4 seasons), and more than 2 on only 3 occasions: bosingwa in 2011/2012, baines in 2012/2013 and 2014/2015. baines of course had/has an unusual monopoly on set pieces. i could go into more detail with this but it basically shows that you can probably rely on your defenders from premium teams to get something in the region of 3-9 attacking points in the first 3 GWKs, maybe a little more in exceptional circumstances. in other words, the equivalent of an extra clean sheet.

let's see what the clean sheets list looks like if the 'premium 7' are all given an extra clean sheet:

TOP 5 CLEAN SHEETS (adjusted) - Gameweeks 1-6
2011/2012: man city, arsenal 4, utd, spurs, newcastle, QPR, stoke, swansea 3
2012/2013: chelsea 5, arsenal 4 everton, west brom and west ham 3
2013/2014: spurs 5, southampton, man city, everton, liverpool, chelsea, west ham 4
2014/2015: chelsea, man utd, spurs, southampton, swansea, west brom, villa and burnley 3

premium teams now appear 15 times in the list. this is still 5 less than those who appeared in the goalscoring list, and by much less of a margin in most cases. AND we haven't even factored in the attacking points for defenders on cheaper teams (of which there were still quite a few as demonstrated above), OR the clean sheet points gained by midfielders, OR bonus, which may benefit defenders more this year but is still skewed in favour of attacking players. it still seems that placing the bulk of our budget in the front 8 is the way to go for our early teams at least (i'm yet to analyse other stages of the season but i may do a follow up post on the subject) because there's statistically more of a gulf between the output of premium and budget strikers/mids than there is for defenders.

sorry for this absurdly long and rambly post, hopefully it's useful even if you feel my conclusion is wrong (by all means argue the case, i may be being dumb!). i was considering showing the percentage of attacking points for each premium team's defenders relative to their overall total but i don't want this to go on foreverrrrr. still, if anyone has any requests for some follow up analysis let me know!

Isn't there also a financial consideration?
The comparative PPM of a defence weighted vs attacked weighted squads would presumably also have to be accounted for. In that the price spectrum is so much broader for attacking players. The 5 top priced defenders total 33m between them (leaving an average 6.7m per player for the remaining 10 slots), whereas the 3 top forwards cost 34.5m (leaving an average just below 5.5m per slot).
Surely the budgetary freedom this allows with the rest of the squad bares consideration?

sure. is that not a separate issue, though? the basic point here is there's a more solid correlation between performance and price in midfield/attack than there is in defence. defence is too unpredictable early on to justify prioritising it with your funds. theoretically building your team around a good defense could work brilliantly, the problem is that in practice it's far more difficult to work out which defenders will make this strategy worthwhile. in midfield and attack we're nearly guaranteed to reap the benefits of some extra investment, defence is far more of a lottery.

I ask a simple question. With no other CHE/ARS coverage:

    a) Azpilicueta
    b) Koscielny

      Defence is truly, truly horrible.

Jags fixtures are horrendous (other than week 1)
Debuchy likely rotated/not first choice with Bellerin around too.

Good job you have 4 more 😉

Joking aside, Yoshida's place isn't secure and I'd wait and see on Bojan's sharpness. A lot of Chelsea eggs in midfield.

Bojan was a punt, maybe should switch. I dont mind both Chelsea, maybe Ill consider Costa+Depay for Rooney+Fab. Didnt know that re: Yoshida, thanks mate

Is this a rating tool? And thanks guys, guess I could manage with 5 RMTs after all 😀

Targett and Vardy for Yoshida and Bojan?

Any help with Soton budget defence option?

Just assuming that most people play 1343 and rating each player out of 1 (averaging those that I assume will be rotated), applying a deep discount to bench fodder and normalising any expected variation from a typical distribution of course.

So... my first RMT so far... any thoughts would be great... I always wildcard early and this season will be no different, so I'm trying to setup 343 for the first 3 gameweeks and take it from there hence not much bench going on...

Too much £ in defence but you know that.. Chelsea's fixtures aren't good enough to warrant 2 defenders imo. Would rather lose 1 and upgrade Chadli and Cazorla if you're going short term.
