The Community Round Up

Fantasy football proved a harsh taskmaster as the 2015/16 season kicked off in frustrating fashion. As well as looking back on Gameweek 1’s shocking results, our community writers and hot topic posters were full of advice on how to ensure Gameweek 2 revives our spirits. We also take a look at the similarities between poker and Fantasy football, examine the mysteries of price rises and falls and analyse of the best stats to emerge from the first round of fixtures. In addition, we find time to see who has taken in an early lead in the many community tournaments taking place this season.

The Community Articles

After the debacle of Gameweek 1, Pooodle provided a thought-provoking article weighing up the pros and cons of being patient or taking action, regarding the disappointing start to the season. For those looking to draft in last week’s star performers, Rodellegabomb was on hand to look at three of the biggest bandwagons.

Our resident poker expert Get In also popped in to show how decisions such as captaining Eden Hazard was still the logical move based on tried and tested gambling theory.

Our Rough with the Smooth article rounded up your tales of woe and also highlighted those who can afford a little smugness going into Gameweek 2.

Amongst the most radical steps Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers can take is to use a chip early on. DMHomag suggests using the Bench Boost chip during a single Gameweek could be wise, as saving it for a double Gameweek may be more troubled than its worth.

Finally, this week saw some of the first FPL price changes of the season, with Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez amongst the risers. For those unfamiliar with how the game’s transfer market works Diva was on hand to offer this beginners guide.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Whether hits or patience is planned the community was on hand to offer a raft of good advice in our hot topic on ensuring Gameweek 2 is full of cheer. Amongst those offering further advice on lessons to take from Gameweek 1, was the RMT Professor, who also showed that even the game’s all time best can be humbled by a poor start. Avoiding rash moves was the key message Sports Guy offered this week as the community continued to lick its wounds from Gameweek 1.

Players being considered for Gameweek 2 include a pair of Premier League newcomers, West Ham’s Dimitri Payet and Swansea’s Andre Ayew. Jeanz provided this handy comparison between the two midfielders, who have an excellent fixture on paper this weekend.

Big hitters under consideration include Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, but OGooner wonders whether the midfielder is as strong an option as many think for this week. Another is Yaya Toure, who was the subject of Invertebrate’s hot topic.

Players facing the chop going into Gameweek 2 include Chelsea’s expensive stars, who were disappointing against Swansea in their opening fixture. Doosra’s discussion invited the community to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of hanging onto the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Hazard.

Wayne Rooney is another player making his Fantasy owners a little nervous and there are question marks as to Martin Skrtel’s position as the Liverpool defender of choice. Both issues cropped up in our midweek Scout Picks discussion which we opened up to the community here.

The Members Tables

Spineless Weasel has been busy dissecting Gameweek 1’s underlying statistic with a raft of tables this week. The most attacking and defensive teams were amongst issues covered, as was the best defenders, strikers and midfielders.

Doosra has also been updating his defender tables, to show which so far are looking a good bet for bonus points and scoring goals.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Jaffalicious’s UEFA Cup themed tournament kicks off next week. Key matches include Irish Madridsta versus The Fantasy Freak, who finished in the top ten in FPL last season. I face Blue Lion, while Demi takes on Beavis. The full qualifying round fixture list can be found here.

After Gameweek 1 Craig McGorum takes the lead in Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league.

With a sensational score of 63 Andy has a commanding lead at the summit of the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league, with the RMT’s Professor taking second spot 21 points behind.

Nocturnals leads the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, which is named after one of FFScout’s first ever posters.

The FFS Old Farts Club league , for our community’s more senior members, is topped by Le Saux Solid Crew, while Devious Weebles takes first in the Long and Winding Road main league.

The safety score in Torres Magic‘s Last Man Standing was 24 this week, which meant 150 managers were knocked out. Entry is still open to those who scored 24 or more in Gameweek 1 and will close at the end of Gameweek 2. More than 2,600 Fantasy managers have qualified so far.

In AZ’s cash league the aptly named ‘Pace Setters’, managed by Khizer Alam currently leads the way after scoring 51 points.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I know the risks involved and I've made an appraisal based on the situation and the prevailing conditions, but I'm still firmly keen on taking the gamble in a bid to jump the gaps in ranks.

Subject to an incoming mauling, is there anyone here on the same boat with me... Walcott (C) for the gameweek?

Currently stuck at 1.8m rank and in need of a boost. If this goes well, consider this my lucky chip.

Thought as much this is a post waiting to get slated.

Terrible idea if your goal is to rise in rank. There has to be someone who is guarenteed a start on your team.

The objective is to win and that can only be done through ascending. Rest of my front seven are guaranteed starters and Rooney will be handed the VC role in case if things deviate from the route.

Not sure what you mean by ascending. But you seem to be set on Walcott and are looking for someone to say hey, great idea! Which it is not.

Impatience would be selling Walcott. It's still early in the season and I think I can afford to take the risk deemed unnecessary by many this weekend.

Walcott is a weird decision. Selling now could be sensible especially if your intended replacement has a juicy fixture. Delaying and selling next week could be sensible especially if you can wriggle around the likely Friday night price drop. Captaining him if you are keeping him is a bit punty but not stupid, if he starts he could well get amongst the goals. So you could do almost anything and find a justifying argument.

I'm quite glad I don't have the decision to make. Although if I did he'd almost certainly already be gone.

I don't think the signs are obvious enough to warrant a sale. Even then, a drop 0.1m to me isn't really too costing and brings no adversity to my plans.

As you mentioned, I am definitely feeling bit punty.

All Walcott owners... I think we're safe... Looking at the price trackers (http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk has been on the money so far), I'm pretty confident his value will survive till the deadline.

That said, there's really no point transferring him out until you get chance to see the games (at least those of your prospective target). None of us want to draft in Payet or Yaya (or whoever) on Friday, only to find they get injured or suspended on Saturday.

So if we keep an eye on the tracker and don't press the button until the tracker confirms he's gonna drop (-100% or less) then we all get some GW2 data to make an informed transfer, or change our mind after he gets a hat trick.

It's like eBay. The more people who bid early, the more it pushes the price. There's no need to push the button if the price is not set to drop that night, and we can buy ourselves that valuable day or two.

Aguero priced at 13.0m means managers will need to play their wildcard or have 2FT. Difficult fitting the big guns in this season. 6.5-7.5. mids the way to go this season.

    My only decision tonight...

Saylor to Oxford (before Oxford rises) or just save the transfer

It feels like it might be a little bit of a waste of a transfer but I don't have any planned transfers and Oxford is more likely to nail down a starting berth than Saylor is.

    What you all reckon?

I don't see him playing regularly - probably the odd full game and a fair few starts off the bench, but yes he'll probably get more gametime than Saylor. Personally I'm happy with four playing defenders for the first few weeks.

don't forget people, Flanagan is back in training, most likely will take the left back spot when he returns.

    3. Bertzeiner-m
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 2 months ago

I really dont think rogers will drop him after a very convincing performance especially since his only replacement is moreno the only way I can see him being dropped is if rogers opts for 5 at the back with can, lovren, skirtle and moreno/clyne at wingback

      1. The Raging Bull
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Gomez is not a left back, his natural position is centre back, yes he can play either side. Going forward he doesn't offer more than Moreno. At some point, Moreno will come in for Gomez.

        1. Gravless wonder
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

Perhaps, but I don't think it will be against Bournemouth as they have a very attacking right hand side and Liverpool can't afford Moreno getting exposed. Also, Gomez protects Lovren who can look shaky at the best of times.

          1. The Raging Bull
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 2 months ago

he protects Lovren because Gomez doesn't bomb forward compared to Moreno, hence Gomez isn't exposed. You saw the effects on Sunday, Liverpool created pretty much nothing.

Everytime I see Chadli mentioned someone always pipes up with the same reponse. "He's not nailed"

    Total poppycock

Other than when he injured the only time Chadli wasn't starting was immediately following the death of his father. Would you want to turn up for work a few days after your father died (and please don't throw "for the money he gets paid I would" at me, it's a lie and you know it)

      Leave Walcott alone!

Ignore this lad guys... He's been trying to sabotage Walcott's value ever since he panicked and took a hit to sell him.

Just trying to vindicate his decision by trying to force the price drop.

      Poor form.

Completely different scenario. West Ham were away from home playing deep. The thinking is that if Wenger is picking between Walcott and Giroud depending on the fixture, then away games will suit Walcott. Especially Palace who like to attack and started Mutch and Cabaye in midfield with Jedinak benched.

    FT saved

    Monreal + Ozil --> 4.5 def + 5.5 mid

    Benteke --> Kun

Is it a good plan ?

    Suggest 4.5 def + 5.5 mid ( Gomez + Mahrez in my team )
